“Shocking... but not surprising” - the words of Stephen Bush, Associate Editor at the Financial Times and Chair of the Commission on Racial Inclusivity in the Jewish Community for the Board of Deputies of British Jews in 2020. Stephen joins Nish and Coco to discuss the fallout from the shocking attack on a synagogue in Manchester last week. The trio discuss solidarity and protest, and why the government's response to the Manchester attack is not making all British Jews feel safer. Stephen has also spent the weekend in an all-but empty exhibition hall, at Tory conference in Manchester. It's a land of misspelt chocolate bars and retro racism - have the Tories given up the ghost? Later - Coco and Nish try their hand at some data analysis - introducing Pod Save the UK's brand-spanking-new diarrhoea index - before checking in on a bold new idea straight out of the Green's conference - abolishing landlords. On October 27, 2018 a lone gunman entered the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA with the intent of killing anyone he could. Tree of Life was the home to three different congregations, Tree of Life, New Light, and Dor Haddash, all of which were preparing for or having their normal shabbat services. What followed was the deadliest attack on the Jewish Community in American history. 11 innocent people were killed, and a further 6 were injured. This attack is the subject of our documentary called Confronting Hate, where we dealt with the attack and aftermath in detail. However, we wanted to make a more traditional episode of The Debrief to cover the team's lessons learned from the event and their advice to other units. In this episode, we will hear from several of the responding members of Pittsburgh SWAT. As usual, we will not mention the shooters name or discuss his agenda because we are hoping time will erase him and the hate he hoped to propagate.

How are LGBTQ+ Jews navigating today's overlapping crises in Israel and in America? In this Z3 Podcast episode, Rabbi Amitai Fraiman speaks with Hila Peer and Asher Gellis about the impact of rising antisemitism and anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment at a moment when community feels both more fragile and more essential than ever. The aftermath of October 7 saw rising tensions around LGBTQ+ identity in Jewish and queer spaces alike, and the polarization in both Israel and America have placed enormous pressures on an already vulnerable community. They conversation explores the heated debate over pinkwashing and how it has shaped perceptions of Jewish LGBTQ+ activism. What unfolds is a candid and deeply personal conversation about personal identity, community belonging, and the shared values that can sustain Jewish communities through times of crisis.About Our GuestsAsher Gellis, MBA, founder and CEO of JQ International earned a BA in Political Theory from UCLA and an MBA from Pepperdine University. Prior to launching JQ International in 2004, Asher served as the Regional Director for Hadassah's Young Judaea in California, Nevada, and Hawaii. He created curriculum for the Bureau of Jewish Education in Los Angeles, and guided teen scholastic Israel tours. Asher has launched dozens of groundbreaking LGBTQ+ Jewish programs and services affecting tens of thousands of lives and steering the Jewish Community towards greater LGBTQ+ inclusion for generations to come.Hila Peer is the Chair of the Aguda – Israel's LGBTQ Association, the country's pioneering LGBTQ organization established in 1975, now celebrating 50 years of activism. The suspect charged in the stabbing of a Jewish Ottawa woman at the city's main kosher Loblaws grocery store last week is still in custody, and is going through a series of court appearances this week. But there has not yet been a bail hearing for Joe Rooke, who appeared by video in an Ottawa court on Sept. 2. Ottawa police arrested the suspect on Aug. 27, shortly after the attack. The man was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a dangerous weapon. Later, when police investigated the suspect's antisemitic social media posts, the case was classified as a hate-motivated crime. News of the attack has shocked the capital's Jewish community, especially because it happened at a grocery store that stocks the largest selection of kosher products in Ottawa. And while it's prompted an outpouring of support and condemnation from political leaders—including a statement signed by 32 Liberal Members of Parliament calling for action to combat rising antisemitism in Canada— some members of the Jewish community say it's merely lip service, adding that social media posts aren't enough to counter the sense of fear and anger that they feel after the stabbing. Police say the victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but has since been released and is recovering at home. While she and her family are keeping her name private for the time being, they have asked for prayers, and hope the community prays for peace. On today's episode of The CJN's North Star podcast, host Ellin Bessner speaks with Jewish community leader Cantor Jason Green of the Kehillat Beth Israel synagogue, where the victim used to sing in his choir, and also with David Roytenberg, an editor at the Canadian Zionist Forum, who was shopping in that Loblaws store when the attack occurred. North Star is on vacation this week, so we're rerunning some of our favourite episodes. This one originally aired August 7, 2024. Sharon Chodirker and Chaim Bell consider themselves lucky: they were among the tens of thousands of tourists and residents in Jasper who were evacuated from the forest fires that devoured a third of the buildings in the iconic Rocky Mountain resort town on July 24, 2024. The Toronto couple, who were on a hiking trip, managed to escape Jasper while smoke and ash rained down on their rental car. When they reached a safe spot across the border in British Columbia, they slept in their vehicle and dined on kosher snacks they'd stored in their portable cooler. Two days after their frightening journey, flames up to 100 metres high swept right through where their hotel stood, destroying several buildings. Now they're sharing their survival story from the safety of their Toronto home, while the town of Jasper remains off-limits except for emergency crews—and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who visited on Aug. 5, 2024. On this episode of The CJN Daily, we hear from the Toronto couple personally, as well as Rabbi Dovid Pinson of Canmore, who runs the new Chabad community centre outside Banff and hosted the evacuees. We'll also hear from Heidi Coleman, the head of the Jewish community in Kamloops, B.C., who felt like she was starring in the musical Come From Away when she helped a busload of stranded Jasperites in her city. The conversation on America's Roundtable focuses on AG Jason Miyares's leadership in fighting opioids, reducing overdose deaths and reducing violence, thus making communitites in Virginia safer. The data released by Virginia Department of Health Office of the Chief Medical Examiner show fentanyl-related overdose deaths in Virginia declined 44 percent year-over-year and are down over 46 percent from its peak in 2021. Virginia led the nation in annual percentage declines in drug overdose deaths in 2024. The recent celebration of America's Independence Day on July 4th 2025, reminds us of America Founding Fathers' ingenuity in creating America's Founding Documents: The Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Virginia played a historic role in the founding of the American Republic - 249 years ago. America's Founding Fathers George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, George Mason, James Monroe, Patrick Henry and John Marshall were all Virginians. The timely discussion elevates the importance of combating anti-Semitism, and advancing principled policies based on the rule of law as well as affirming the significance of peace through strength. Bio | Jason S. Miyares (https://jasonmiyares.com/about/) Attorney General Jason Miyares' story doesn't start in Virginia Beach, Virginia, but in Havana, Cuba when his mother, Miriam Miyares, fled communist Cuba, penniless and homeless. She taught Jason a love for freedom, democracy, and that America is indeed the “last best hope on earth.” A product of Virginia public schools, Jason graduated with a Bachelor's in Business Administration from James Madison University and received his J.D. from the College of William and Mary School of Law. He previously served as a prosecutor in the Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney Office, where he worked alongside law enforcement to keep violent criminals off our streets and our communities safe. In 2015, almost fifty years to the day that she fled Cuba, Miriam was able to vote for her son Jason Miyares to represent her in the oldest democracy in the Western Hemisphere, the Virginia House of Delegates. While representing Virginia Beach, Jason was recognized as “Legislator of the Year” in both 2018 and 2019 from the College Affordability and Public Trust for his work on transparency and affordability in higher education, as well as by the Hampton Roads Military Officers Association of America in 2018. He was also recognized in 2019 by the Safe House Project for his work combatting human trafficking, an issue that his administration is prioritizing. Jason Miyares is the first Cuban American elected to the General Assembly, the first Hispanic elected statewide in Virginia, and the first son of an immigrant ever elected to be Attorney General. What does it really take to keep America's biggest city from falling into chaos? Dr. Phil sits down with New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Kaz Daughtry for a no-holds-barred conversation about juvenile gangs, violent crime, and a justice system that's letting criminals walk free. But it doesn't stop there — they tackle the disturbing rise in antisemitism, from attacks on Jewish residents to hate-filled rhetoric on college campuses. With over 90,000 ghost cars and 20,000 illegal guns taken off the streets, this is a battle to save the soul of a city. Mayor Adams says, “This is Gotham… we need to be Batman.” Because if New York falls, what happens to the rest of the country? Special thanks to our sponsors! Support the brands that support us! There is a lot of fear among the Jewish community in America following Sunday's attack and the shooting in D.C. in May that left two Israel embassy staff members dead. In both instances, Rep. Randy Fine, R-Fla., who is Jewish, says the suspects went “hunting” for Jewish people to harm. “I mean, people are afraid because there's not enough security to solve for this problem. And what we've seen is we've seen it tolerated,” Fine said. Today, Fine says, “we have reached a world where ... the left has told us, ‘globalize the Antifada,' [and] their soldiers are listening.” Still, the congressman says he has hope because the policy steps taken in Florida have been effective. “When you show that you're not afraid, when you call evil for what it is, when you don't back down, they back off,” he said. Mohamed Soliman, the lead suspect in attack, used a makeshift flamethrower and incendiary device as he shouted, “Free Palestine,” and attacked the group of people marching in support of freeing the Israeli hostages. Soliman, an Egyptian national who was in the country illegally, is now in custody and has been charged with a federal hate crime. The morning after the attack, Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., both openly Muslim, had yet to issue statements. Fine was critical of the silence from the two Muslim congresswomen following the attack that left eight people injured in Boulder, Colorado. “They're Muslim terrorists,” he said when asked what he made of their lack of a public statement as of Monday morning. “I put it to people this way,” Fine continued, “the people who are sitting, running Hamas in Qatar, they're not blowing anything up, but they support terrorism. If you support Muslim terrorism, you're a Muslim terrorist, and I believe that they both do. You can see it in the silence. I think it is a disgrace that they are Americans, let alone in Congress. And I believe that the way you fight for good is to call out evil.” Tlaib did respond to the attack on Monday afternoon following The Daily Signal's conversation with Fine. "The violent attack in Boulder is horrific,” Tlaib wrote on X. “My heart goes out to all of the victims and their families. Violence has no place in our communities.” Twenty-four hours after the attack, Omar had yet to issue a statement on the incident. Neither Tlaib or Omar answered The Daily Signal's request for comment in response to Fine's claim that the congresswoman are “Muslim terrorists.” Fine sits down with The Daily Signal to discuss.
