We're back to discuss all the latest, greatest, and strangest in the rock world with Geekwire! Here's what we're chewing on this time: David Lee Roth performs Van Halen hits at the M3 Rock Festival. Reactions were mixed. We give ours. A behind-the-scenes book on This Is Spinal Tap and its sequel is set for release in September. We hope it's in Dubly. Rikki Rockett says Poison gets a strong offer for a 2026 headlining tour; but it's up to Bret Michaels. Will The Cat get Dragged In again in 2026? Wolfgang Van Halen explains why he dropped the "WVH" from Mammoth's name and we try to decipher what he's talking about. Kirk Hammett unboxes Metallica's remastered Load deluxe box set and enthusiastically celebrates it's artwork. A fan spends $12,495 to be Gene Simmons's roadie and shares the experience. Was it worth the dough? Henry Rollins discusses large-scale Punk Rock Museum project and we speculate on it's possible Nashville location. Dee Snider explains why he moved his family to rural North Carolina. Was it worth The Price? A dump truck crashes into the Whisky A Go Go ahead of a Boy Hits Car concert. We really do live in a simulation, eh? George Lynch launches a new band, George Lynch & The Mob, with a rotating lineup. Basically, Lynch Mob. Motörhead's previously unreleased 1976 album The Manticore Tapes gets a release. We share our excitement. A rumor circulates that Led Zeppelin plans a new album and 2026 tour. But, is it even true? Additionally, we touch on listener-submitted topics including Sammy Hagar (yes, again), new releases from LA Guns and Faster Pussycat, Steve Perry collaborating with Willie Nelson, Sleep Token, the live return of Savatage, an upcoming Stryper Christmas album and more. Interview by Kris PetersWednesday 13 is arguably one of the hardest-working musicians out there. From his solo project to celebration tours featuring Murderdolls songs, Wednesday not only lives the excesses of rock and roll debauchery; he sets the bar as well. Each of his musical undertakings, including Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13 as well as Murderdolls and Wednesday 13, have the same menacing undertones of gore, horror and theatrics, but despite the obvious similarities, Wednesday 13 is much more than a one-trick pony.Blending the above elements with punk, humour and a ghostly sense of the macabre, Wednesday 13 has his roots deeply embedded in hard rock but transcends the barriers of a plethora of styles and genres that combine to make his music a necessary evil in a world growing increasingly sterile.2022's Horrifier was met with widespread media and public adulation, but these two things have never mattered when it comes to Wednesday's musical output. It is more about the sense of ambivalence and the irresistible thread that binds everything together that keeps the fire in Wednesday's cauldron burning.Such is his contribution to music that Wednesday could easily be forgiven for playing it safe with each new album cycle, but in true Wednesday 13 style, safe was the furthest thing on his mind with his new album Mid Death Crisis, which will be unleashed on April 25.More a step back into the things and a time that gave birth to Wednesday's musical psyche, Mid Death Crisis benefits from production by Alex Kane (Life, Sex & Death, Enuff Z'Nuff, Antiproduct) and a mix courtesy of Steve Evetts (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Prong, DevilDriver) that devilishly encapsulates the musical strengths of both while remaining quintessentially the afterbirth of Wednesday 13.Wednesday spent some time with HEAVY to discuss the album in greater detail. We started by asking if he is confident heading into the album release date."Very confident," he replied without hesitation. "With my last few albums I put out, I didn't know if the audience was going to like it as much as I did. And when I was experimenting from albums like Condolences and Necrophaze and all those records, I look back now and those are the experimental records because I did some different things with them. And those were ones I took some chances with, and I wasn't sure if the audience would like them. But they did. This is the one record where I feel pretty confident that they're going to like it. I know it's hit all the bases with what I was trying to go for."The album is widely touted as a return to Wednesday 13's musical roots, an opinion we put to the man himself."I think so," he measured. "After COVID and everything, I had a little time to look back on my career and 20 years of doing Wednesday 13. And I just kind of looked at the whole career and went, well, what do you like best of all this? I started looking at it all, and I went, well, where I started was the most honest and real place for me. And that seemed natural. And I kind of went back to that look, and I went back to that sound, and it was easy to do. It just felt right, and this is more of a hard rock record than it is a metal record, but it's not just like I tried to imitate my first record or anything. It's just in the same spirit, and I feel good about it, like I did on that first record."In the full interview, Wednesday 13 described Mid Death Crisis as an energetic experience, carefully structured to reflect a live performance, and emphasized that sonically it encapsulates his career and aligns with fan expectations. He highlighted the song When the Devil Commands as the lead single, crafted to appeal to both existing fans and new listeners, with lyrics inspired by his childhood experiences during the Satanic Panic. He discussed his songwriting philosophy, focusing on natural inspiration from classic horror and pop culture. Additionally, he spoke about his collaboration with Taime Downe, noting its significance due to his admiration for Faster Pussycat. We spoke about his song titles and where they come from, coming up with fresh sounding material the more you write, future and current tours and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Jon and I were shocked to see the news of the weird and sudden death of Pussycat Singer Taime Down's fiancée Kimberly Burch. She apparently 'fell' off the cruise ship they were on - one of those rock cruises where the band had just finished a set. Huh? Plus other stuff so hot you'll need an icepack on your tenders to get through it. New podcast episode Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

On this episode, we recapped the Largo Van Halen Diver Down footage that dropped today—incredible stuff! We also talked about upcoming guitar kit builds—Ron is making a Rhoads-style guitar, and I'm building another Strat-style kit this Saturday night. I showed off a few guitars, discussed an Ultimate Guitar article about Eddie Van Halen & Randy Rhoads, and we covered the tragic Faster Pussycat cruise ship story. If you love rock, music news, and guitar talk, this is the place to be—Johnny Beane TV!
Pete Byrne of Naked Eyes was one of the first interviews I did solo for Stuck in the '80s. It was back in 2008 and I had just seen the band perform as part of the Regeneration Tour in Las Vegas. Pete and I had a great chat as he shared stories behind some of the band's biggest hits. Naked Eyes is playing on the 2025 voyage of The 80s Cruise, so it's a good time to revisit this classic interview. Wednesday 13 starts us up on this episode. His new album, Mid Death Crisis, drops on April 25th. I had to get 13 on the show for a few reasons, including that he's a huge horror movie fan like myself. Yes, we did talk a little horror. I also wanted him to talk about the new album and tour. The first single, "When The Devil Commands" is a crunchy horror-rock shredder. I can't wait to hear the rest of the album, which includes a track he did with Faster Pussycat's Taime Downe. He also told me about the fire that broke out while filming another video. He may have saved a ton of acreage from burning a month ago. Up next, it's Jake and Joe from the Autumn Kings. The boys from southern Ontario have come a long way in the 10 years since forming and are hitting the road for shows in Europe next week! They talk about the band, their musical influences, the biggest rock stars they've met and lots more. This was also a fun conversation! I can't wait to see them when they play a show closer to here in the future. Thanks for listening!

This week we talk about songs and albums by artists that the artists themselves have tried to lock away and bury! This is the continuation of our series that explores what happened when bands that had success in the 80s attempted to follow trends and remain relevant in the 1990s. Listen in as we discuss the varying degrees to which this worked, or where we had to ask, “What were they thinking?”What's this InObscuria thing? Our podcast exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This time around we are bringing you the most lost of the lost. The decade of the 90s was such a polarizing time for older bands that were still trying to remain relevant. Hair Metal: The Soundtrack of Suburban Rebellion The term "hair metal" is often loaded with contradictory emotions. For some, it carries a pejorative tone, evoking images of overproduced, superficial music that prioritized style over substance. For others, it symbolizes a golden era of hedonism and carefree excess—a nostalgic portal to the cultural climate of the 1980s. Whether you're a Gen X'er reliving the glory years of 1981-1987 or a Gen Z'er discovering the era's flamboyant spectacle for the first time, hair metal offers an intriguing entry into a bygone cultural zeitgeist. Origins and Influences: A Hybrid of Excess Hair metal is best understood as an amalgamation of diverse influences: the shock rock theatrics of Alice Cooper and KISS, the virtuosic intensity of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), and the pop hooks reminiscent of 70s classic rock. The genre's genesis can be traced to Los Angeles in the late 1970s and early 1980s, amid the decline of hardcore punk and new wave. Unlike the disaffected rebellion of punk or the cerebral stylings of new wave, hair metal embraced a more commercial, hedonistic ethos that resonated with suburban youth. Key Players and Early Success Van Halen's meteoric rise in the late 70s, driven by Eddie Van Halen's guitar innovation and David Lee Roth's charismatic theatrics, laid much of the groundwork. Yet, it was Quiet Riot that first achieved mainstream success with 1983's Metal Health, the first metal album to reach #1 on the Billboard charts. Their cover of Slade's “Cum on Feel the Noize” exemplified the blend of hard rock bombast and pop sensibility that defined the genre. Simultaneously, Ozzy Osbourne's Blizzard of Ozz (1980) featuring Randy Rhoads, redefined what metal could be—dark and heavy, but also catchy and accessible. This formula of blending metal's aggression with pop hooks became the template for hair metal's commercial domination. The Cultural Politics of Hair Metal Unlike punk's overt challenge to conservative politics, hair metal offered rebellion as a commodified spectacle. It was less about collective resistance to authority and more about personal indulgence. The Reagan and Thatcher years saw the rise of neoliberal individualism, and hair metal became the soundtrack to this ethos: drugs, sex, and flashy excess. Bands like Mötley Crüe, with albums such as Shout at the Devil (1983), exemplified this aesthetic, blending occult imagery with glam decadence. However, by the late 80s, the genre began to cannibalize itself. Bands influenced by early hair metal—such as Poison—were producing sanitized versions of the form. By 1988, hair metal had become a bloated commercial enterprise. Simultaneously, the rise of bands like Guns N' Roses and Faster Pussycat, who rejected the cartoonish glam aesthetic, signaled a shift. Mötley Crüe's 1987 album Girls, Girls, Girls symbolized this transition—gone were the lace and makeup, replaced by leather and a grittier image. The Decline: From Cultural Dominance to Nostalgia The genre's decline was swift, for many hastened by the rise of grunge and alternative rock in the early 90s. While I don't discount the raw authenticity of bands like Nirvana, and how it stood in stark contrast to the excesses of hair metal; By 1987 most of the “hair metal” songs were pop music with distorted guitars. Def Leppard's 1983 Pyromania was to be their “Thriller”. This was less an authentic genre, and more a media moniker, and everyone with a Marshall stack and hair spray wanted to use that moniker to get in the business. By the early 90s, the genre was relegated to nostalgia tours and retro compilations, a relic of a pre-grunge world. Mötley Crüe playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2AYeS0yG88ymhk7Lrb09Kr...
