Not too long ago, all cannabis business had to be done in the shadows. If you had developed a product for cannabis, you had to market it as something else, and then give a wink that it had "other applications" as well. On this episode of Shaping Fire, host Shango Los sits down with Fritz Chess, founder of Eden Labs, to discuss what it was like to bring his ethanol extractor to market in the back pages of High Times magazine, how the changing political climate caused cannabis activity to migrate and some insights into ethanol extraction itself.

Extraction of terpenes presents unique challenges because of their delicate and volatile nature. In some cases, thick resins, heavy oils, alkaloids, etc. can be successfully extracted using somewhat crude methods. Terpenes require a lighter touch to isolate and extract without damaging them. This is achieved by utilizing combinations of heating, stirring, and pressurizing with organic solvents and/or water. The #1 Revenue Killer is unpredicted downtime. A CO2 extraction system is a powerful asset with significant revenue potential with multiple SKUs and scalability, but to capitalize on it, you have to use it. If a machine suffers reliability issues and creates unplanned downtime it can go beyond the obvious revenue loss. Reliability issues will strain staff and compromise your growth. A stop-and-start supply chain may damage your business relationships, too. To learn more about understanding the full cost of ownership, connect with Eden Labs at edenlabs.com.
