What if we're approaching mental health all wrong? A revolutionary new therapy is debunking popular therapy narratives and changing how we treat anxiety and overthinking. We're continuing our Mental Health Awareness Month series with this introduction to Metacognitive Therapy (MCT), a groundbreaking new approach to treating anxiety, overthinking, OCD, depression, panic attacks, and more, without the usual coping strategies and trauma processing.Unlike traditional talk therapy, Metacognitive Therapy helps people break free from the cycle of worry, rumination, and distress by targeting the way we think about our thoughts — not the thoughts themselves. This is an especially exciting topic for me, as I've been working with the team at metacognitivetherapy.com as the Head Of Content for the past year, creating mental health resources including a website, social media channels, an app and a new podcast that's still to come. MCT might just revolutionize how we treat mental health disorders.I'm joined by Clinical Psychologist Sunniva Itland, founder of one of Norway's largest private psychology clinics and co-founder of metacognitivetherapy.com, to unpack this transformative therapy that's changing lives worldwide. This is for anyone who hasn't found a therapy or modality that's really working to improve their mental health. Part 1 [Understanding Youth Mental Health]The rise in mental health concerns among youngpeople, including anxiety, depression, and stress. The rise in mental health concerns among young people isinfluenced by several factors, including increased academic pressure, socialmedia exposure, and societal expectations. Anxiety, depression, and stress arebecoming more prevalent due to challenges such as bullying, family conflicts, and uncertainty about the future. The COVID-19 pandemic also exacerbated theseissues, leading to heightened feelings of isolation and distress. Additionally, the stigma around mental health can prevent young people from seeking help, making it crucial for parents, educators, and communities to provide opensupport and accessible resources to address these growing concerns. The impact of social media, academic pressure, and societal expectations.Social media, academic pressure, and societal expectationsall play significant roles in shaping the mental health of young people. To mitigate these impacts, parents andcaregivers should encourage balance, reinforce self-worth beyond achievements, and promote open conversations about emotional well-being.·        EncourageBalance: Helpchildren establish a healthy balance between school, extracurricularactivities, social life, and rest. Encourage hobbies, outdoor activities, andmindfulness practices to reduce stress and prevent burnout.·        ReinforceSelf-Worth Beyond Achievements:Remind children that their value is not solely based on grades, awards, orsocial media validation. Celebrate their efforts, kindness, creativity, andpersonal growth rather than just accomplishments.·        PromoteOpen Conversations About Emotional Well-Being: Create a safe space for children toexpress their feelings without fear of judgment. Normalize discussions aboutmental health, validate their emotions, and reassure them that seeking help isa sign of strength, not weakness.·        Monitorand Guide Social Media Use:Encourage mindful social media consumption by discussing its potential effects, setting screen time limits, and promoting positive online interactions.·        EncourageProfessional Support if Needed:If a child is struggling, seek help from mental health professionals. Therapy, counseling, or support groups can provide valuable tools to manage stress, anxiety, and self-doubt.The importance of normalizing discussionsaround mental health.Normalizing discussions aroundmental health is crucial in reducing stigma, encouraging early intervention, and fostering a supportive environment where young people feel safe to seekhelp.·        ReducesStigma and Shame:Open conversations about mental health help break down misconceptions andremove the fear of judgment. When mental health is treated like physicalhealth, children are more likely to acknowledge their struggles and seeksupport without feeling ashamed.·        EncouragesEarly Intervention:When families talk openly about emotions and mental well-being, children aremore likely to recognize when they need help. Early intervention can preventminor issues from escalating into severe mental health challenges.·        BuildsEmotional Resilience:Discussing mental health helps children understand their emotions, developcoping skills, and build resilience. The alcohol, says J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, came about in young adulthood, when it solved persistent social anxiety and made him the life of the party. As Kenji found tremendous success in food writing and restaurateuring, he found that he couldn't really make it through the day without downing between two and five drinks. This wasn't hard to pull off in the food business, surrounded by booze and a culture that heartily encouraged its consumption. Kenji found that, as is so often the case with mental health, that the reality of the condition didn't match the drunken messy stereotype: his work wasn't harmed, he had strong relationships and a family. It's just that he was an addict. Finally, just a few months ago and in his mid-40's, he decided to get sober. This episode marks the kick-off of the 2025 Max Fun Drive! Dr. Fredric Schiffer is a sought-after public speaker, best-selling author, psychiatrist and part-time assistant professor at Harvard.Dr. Schiffer has a wealth of experience in psychiatry. He has been studying the relationship between past traumas, cerebral laterality, depression and anxiety. He has tremendous knowledge of Dual-Brain Psychology techniques.Through his groundbreaking work as founder of the Dual-Brain Psychology Institute, he discovered that the brain is made up of two minds which are competing for dominance. When the immature and troubled half of the brain is treated, Dual-Brain Psychology techniques can successfully curb anxiety, depression, PTSD, and addiction, and improve psychological wellbeing. The doctor believes that many mental issues originate from early traumas and very often it's trauma that has not been recognized. Dr. Schiffer has discovered a technique to treat the troubled mind using something as unlikely as a piece of junk mail. Send us a textThis week on The Less Stressed Life Podcast, we're breaking down the fascinating connection between unresolved trauma, chronic inflammation, and the nervous system. Dr. Don Wood explains how past experiences get "stuck" in the brain, keeping the body in a constant state of stress and driving symptoms like anxiety, autoimmune issues, and even chronic pain.We discuss why emotional trauma can show up as physical illness, how it alters immune function, and—most importantly—how to reprogram the brain to stop running old stress patterns. David, Matt, and Rhonda Answer Your Questions! 1. How can I help my depressed son? 2. What can you do on a boring first date? 3. Are depression and anxiety genetic and hopeless? 4. What do scary, intrusive thoughts mean? The answers to this week's questions were written by David prior to the podcast. The live discussions will add greatly to the comments below. Get consent on first question, or change name. In fact, I'll just change her name to Henrietta. Henrietta asks how she can help her son who's been severely depressed for nearly 20 years and rejects all suggestions. Julia asks what to do on a boring first date. Negar asks if anxiety and depression are genetically caused and therefore hopeless . Negar asks about scary intrusive thoughts. 1. Henrietta asks how she can help her son who's been severely depressed for nearly 20 years and rejects all suggestions. Dear  Dr David I discovered you years ago due to my son's depression.   I purchased your book for him, but he not reading it.  He thinks he is too far gone for any self help and has been on anti depressants for years. I appreciate all your hard work , the blogs and the app.   I have my hopes up that one day he will listen to you or download the app.   This depression has been going on more than 18 years now. Do you have any ideas on how I could get him to listen to you on You tube?  God bless you and your team.   Keep  up the good work! Best  regards Henrietta David's reply Hi Henrietta, I'm so sorry he's struggling. I do have a clear recommendation, clearly spelled out in the podcast of a couple years ago, “How to help. And how NOT to help.” You can easily find it on the list of podcasts on my website. I'm sure that his depression has been heart-breaking for you. But there is a radically different strategy / direction one can pursue when efforts to “help” are 100% rejected. LMK if I can use your question on an Ask David podcast. Then you'll get input from several of us. Warmly, david 2. Julia asks what to do on a boring first date. Dear David Just saw that you published a podcast about how to give negative feedback, absolutely cannot wait to listen to it. I'm afraid I fall in the category of people who tend omitting opinions and this is going to be of great help! Now to my question: how do I get more excited in dates with guys ? I would like to date more and have a more active sexual life but I find myself getting bored in dates and this affects also my libido. I will have thoughts like: this is boring he is not that attractive I won't be turned on sex won't be good I obviously then don't end up having sex with the guy and try to have a date with someone else. In the date I don't feel anxious but I'm not excited physically and mentally. The anxiety plays a role before I go to the next scheduled dates, because with time I start thinking this feeling of boredom will never go away. I have tried to work on the thoughts myself with little results and I was wondering if you had any suggestions on how I could be less bored and anxious and enjoy myself. Thanks you for your answer and your amazing work! Best wishes, Julia David's Reply Great question, and I have an answer. Can we include this in the next Ask David, using your first name or a fake first name? Thanks, Warmly, david You are viewing dating as a shopping expedition, trying to “find” the best item to purchase, and finding your shopping boring, which it is. But you are forcing it to be boring because you are not being open with your feelings. You are foolishly trying to hide your feelings of boredom, whereas they are really the door to fascination and a most interesting and dynamic exchange. Let me show you what I mean. You can, instead, view dating as forming a relationship, being open, and genuine, and a little flirtatious, and seeing how things unfold. So, or example, you might say something along these lines, “You seem like a really neat and interesting person, but I notice that our conversation is not very open, or vulnerable, and that makes it way less interesting. Have you notice that, too? Tell me how you're feeling.” If you express this, things will instantly get very interesting! You are not trying to hurt their feelings, but rather open up a conversation about feelings, by encouraging them to be real. They may also be feeling bored, or anxious, or whatever. As a psychiatrist, I find that when I explore the feelings and insecurities of my patients, it is always interesting. And when there is tension, including boredom, I acknowledge it to find out what's up, and how is my patient experiencing the session and our interaction, and that is interesting 100% of the time, without exception. Warmly, david Dear David, Thank you for such an amazing answer! I have listened to the podcasts so many times and I am familiar with the concept of sharing the tensed feelings like boredom, to not force the other person to be boring. However I had never thought to apply it to dating!! It is such a foreign concept to how all my friends approach dating, that I will need first to experiment with it. I'm curious to see if I'm going to be brave enough to take this leap! Cannot wait to hear the podcast! All the best, Giulia 3. Negar asks if anxiety and depression are genetically caused and therefore hopeless . Hello, my kind father

Sarah put on a brave face for the first three months of Isla's life but behind closed doors, the all-consuming anxiety was only getting worse. It wasn't until her husband was home over Christmas that she could no longer hide the severity of the illness and she finally said 'I need serious help'. Many things stand out to me about Sarah's story: the pervasive anxiety that invaded her early postpartum experience; the insomnia and inability to switch off that added to her stress; the eventual depression that overwhelmed her capacity to cope; and the challenges she faced navigating an unfamiliar mental health system. But what stands out to me the most about Sarah's story is Sarah herself and her willingness to find and accept the right support. From joining Facebook groups to connecting with a social worker, from writing to inpatient MBU stays, from in-home support to unlikely friendships with those who have walked this path before us, and more, this is a powerful story about one mother's determination to feel connected to her daughter once more. Please note, this episode discusses suicidal ideation. How does mold and stored trauma in the body create a feedback cycle that makes us susceptible to the other? Studies are confirming that common mental health symptoms, like depression and anxiety, are associated with brain inflammation. I want to share with you some two often overlooked sources of brain inflammation and emotional fragility, toxins from mold exposure and Lyme infection. More importantly, the feedback cycle that they create with stored trauma in the body.  This is important because we have a mental health crisis with unprecedented numbers of anxiety, depression and related effects like, burnout. While we usually assume a person, place or situation is causing us stress, we want to consider the increasing amount of mold exposure and undetected chronic Lyme disease. Many are unaware of the association between the two and without knowing to investigate, get on a recommended mood and sleep medications that cause problems and are difficult to get off of later, and are addressing the real problem.  My good friend Kirkland Newman, is my guest for this episode. She is a journalist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, who faced postpartum depression and couldn't find answers in the traditional healthcare approach. So she did her own research and created Mindhealth 360 an integrative Mental Health website to be a resource on information for others also trying to find mental health solutions. In this episode, you'll learn: How trauma responses from adverse childhood events cause brain inflammation  How brain inflammation can pre-dispose you to a long-haul syndrome with mold or Lyme  What mold does to our nervous system to lead to anxiety and depression How we might know if we have mold or Lyme toxins How to approach our trauma work or therapy when we also have mold or Lyme The different modalities we want to integrate for therapy For more information and show notes, please visit our website: https://biologyoftrauma.com/biology-of-trauma-podcast/

ABOUT THE EPISODE:Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a highly effective but obscure treatment in psychiatry. It received its first FDA clearance for the treatment of depression in 2008 but has since proven itself to be effective for a host of other issues – depression, OCD, smoking cessation, bipolar, PTSD, cognitive impairment, and even autism. And a huge bonus? Side effects are practically non-existent.If that doesn't get your attention, consider this: The FDA recently cleared TMS for depression in adolescents aged 15 and up, with studies currently being conducted on efficacy for substance use disorders. In this episode, I speak with Dr. Martha Koo, president of the TMS society's board of directors. Martha received her degrees from Princeton and UCLA and is double-board-certified in psychiatry and addiction. She has also participated in the evolution of TMS for decades. She'll explain who TMS is for, how it works, what it's capable of, and why there may be an explosion of its use in the coming years.EPISODE RESOURCES:Neuro Wellness SpaYour Behavioral HealthClear Behavioral Health (Mental Health & Addiction Services)TMS Society (find a provider)This podcast is part of a nonprofit called Hopestream CommunityLearn about The Stream, our private online community for momsLearn about The Woods, our private online community for dadsFind us on Instagram: @hopestreamcommunityDownload a free e-book, Worried Sick: A Compassionate Guide For Parents When Your Teen or Young Adult Child Misuses Drugs and AlcoholHopestream Community is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Amazon Associate.
