Forrest is joined by neurogastroenterologist Dr. Trisha Pasricha for a conversation about the gut-brain connection, including how gut health impacts our mood and mental health. Dr. Pasricha explains how the gut and the brain communicate, how early gut experiences can shape adult anxiety and depression, why GI symptoms are often misunderstood or dismissed, and what the research actually says about probiotics, leaky gut, and detoxification. They also discuss simple, evidence-based ways to improve gut health, dispelling social-media fueled myths along the way.  About our guest: Dr. Tricia Pasricha is a physician-scientist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and columnist for the Washington Post. In this Her Stack series episode, I open up about maternal mental health, postpartum anxiety, and the invisible biological load mothers carry long after the six-week checkup is over. This episode is not just for the newly postpartum mother. It is for the mother whose kids are four, eight, fifteen, and still asking herself why she does not feel like herself. I share why motherhood structurally changes the brain, hormones, and nervous system, and why so many mothers are left feeling anxious, foggy, depleted, or unlike themselves without ever being properly screened or supported. I walk you through the science of the postpartum neurosteroid withdrawal, the gray matter changes that persist for years, and the five-system map underneath maternal brain fog. Then I break down the full four-pillar protocol I use with my one-to-one clients: foundational nutrition, lifestyle and biohacking tools, the supplement layer including some of the most under-discussed compounds for the maternal brain, and the advanced peptide layer including Semax, Selank, NAD+, and bioregulators. This is the episode every mother needs. Send it to one. Join The LongHer Life for women-specific guidance on peptides, hormones, and longevity. Because we can't ignore the physical side to mental health, and taking care of our bodies is a key piece in taking care of our minds.  Tune in to hear about: Our mood has EVERYTHING to do with our brain health. So what do top neuroscientists recommend for psychiatric issues? Dr. Kristen Willeumier offers her EXACT protocol for improving anxiety without a medical prescription. This is game-changing advice on the power of supplements for managing anxiety and psychiatric disorders, from an award-winning neuroscientist with a PHD and Masters in neurobiology, Masters in Physiological science, and postdoctoral scientist in the Department of Neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in LA. Your gut can play a huge role in your mental health (95% of the serotonin in our body is housed in the gut!). Episode SummaryIn this episode of Million Dollar Flip Flops, Rodric sits down with Mike Wood — construction executive, husband, father, and founder of Learn to Love Being You, a program designed to help people free themselves from anxiety and depression.Mike shares his deeply personal story of growing up with negative core beliefs, struggling silently for decades, and eventually realizing that success on the outside did nothing to fix the pain on the inside. Even after building a life that looked “successful” by every external measure — money, family, house, healthy kids — he found himself more miserable than ever. That breaking point became the turning point. What followed was a journey inward: healing old beliefs, reprogramming the subconscious mind, and discovering that the very things he thought were broken in him were actually patterns he could understand and change.Rodric and Mike also talk about leadership, construction, emotional healing, mental health in men, and how the work we do on ourselves always shows up in our businesses, teams, and families. This is a conversation about anxiety and depression, yes — but more than that, it's about ownership, healing, and learning how to become the kind of leader who changes everything around him.In this episode, you'll hear:Mike's story of struggling with anxiety and depression for most of his lifeHow negative childhood beliefs shaped his adult success and sufferingWhy achieving “everything” on paper still left him miserableThe subconscious pattern Mike uncovered that changed everythingHow reframing old emotional moments can lead to real healingWhy men often suffer in silenceHow inner healing changed Mike's leadership in businessThe story of a million-dollar flood and the leadership lesson it createdWhy you are not broken — you just may not understand your operating systemHighlights & Timestamps[00:00] Success without peace is still miseryMike opens with the powerful truth that even after achieving everything he thought would make him happy, he was still deeply unhappy.[01:00] Meet Mike WoodMike introduces himself as a construction executive and someone whose real mission is helping people rid themselves of anxiety and depression.[01:00] Construction, books, and parallel pathsRodric and Mike connect over construction, coaching, and the overlap in their personal journeys.[02:00] What led Mike down this pathMike shares how years of anxiety, depression, and negative self-belief became the foundation for the work he now does.[02:00] The childhood story that shaped everythingMike explains how struggling to spell his own name in kindergarten created a subconscious belief that he wasn't smart enough.[04:00] How subconscious beliefs get programmedMike breaks down how emotional moments paired with clear intention can wire limiting beliefs into the subconscious mind.[05:00] The healing process that changed his lifeMike explains how going back to those early moments, reframing them, and releasing them changed his life forever.[06:00] Why the subconscious holds onto painMike shares how the subconscious mind tries to protect us, even when the very thing it's doing is hurting us.[07:00] Why men suffer in silenceRodric and Mike talk about how men are often taught not to share emotions, even when they are deeply struggling.[08:00] When did Mike start figuring it out?Mike shares when he turned inward and began experimenting with books, meditation, healing work, and deeper self-awareness.[09:00] How healing changed Mike's business lifeMike explains how personal growth transformed the way he led inside the construction company.[10:00] The million-dollar flood leadership storyMike tells the story of a disastrous flood and how taking full ownership changed the entire energy of the room and the company.[12:00] Why the business always reflects the leaderRodric and Mike talk about how emotional patterns, leadership issues, and business problems are always connected.[14:00] Mike's question for the next guestMike asks the next guest whether they've been able to turn inward in relation to life and business.[15:00] The question Mike was askedMike answers a powerful question about what measure would have predicted failure early in his life.[16:00] Mike's message to anyone listeningMike closes with a powerful reminder: you are not broken — you just may not yet understand how your mind is trying to protect you.Notable Quotes“I literally achieved everything… and I was more miserable than I was when I was 18 and miserable.” – Mike Wood“I stopped looking to the outside world for excuses and reasons to get better, and I turned my focus inward.” – Mike Wood“Your subconscious mind is really just trying to protect you.” – Mike Wood“When you learn to do it yourself, it spreads to your company.” – Mike Wood“It makes you a real leader.” – Mike Wood“Men are suffering in silence.” – Mike Wood“You're not broken. In this episode, Pastor Brad talks with author and speaker Maria I. Morgan about her powerful journey through anxiety and depression. Maria shares how her first experience with anxiety and depression began in 2006 after a car accident. During that season she sought help quickly and spent about nine months receiving medication and therapy, but the deeper root of her struggles was not discovered at that time. Years later, in 2020, Maria faced a second and much more severe episode after caring for her mother-in-law who had dementia. During this difficult period, she experienced intense depression, suicide attempts, and even a psychosis episode. Eventually, through treatment and deeper reflection, the root of her struggles was uncovered—pain connected to her childhood relationship with her father. Through faith, support, and healing, Maria experienced restoration and now shares her story to help others who are struggling with anxiety and depression. This episode is a powerful and hope-filled conversation for anyone walking through similar challenges. About the Guest: Maria I. Morgan is the award-winning author of the Louie the Lawnmower children's series and Outrageously Fruitful, a women's Bible study. In this episode, I want to briefly define the brain gut health connection. The main question that only you can answer is are you willing to pursue nutrition as part of your anxiety, depression toolkit?  Most people say they want to be heathy but won't give up that extra large burger with chips.  I am not trying to make you give that up. But from experience I do know that I can't sustain physical or mental health eating junk food each and every day. Lord knows I tried.   And if you do have anxiety, depression or the long list of things that can happen to people, then you have to take nutrition seriously.  Your good gut microbiota need help and reinforcements.  Resources Mentioned:  There is an excellent 2 minute video that explains visually the brain and gut health connection. The video is from Professor Mark Dingman YT Channel Neuroscientifically Challenged.  From 2025 is an post from New York Presbyterian Health Matters section of their website, who spoke with Dr. Benjamin Lebwohl, a gastroenterologist about the gut brain axis. The Cleveland Clinic has a 2023 blog post on the brain gut connection. It gives an overview, the functions, bit of an anatomy lesson and some of the conditions associated with an unhappy gut environment    And for those that like the science straight (or is that neat?) there is a journal entry by Niazi, Madiha Khan, Hassan, Farooq, Tufail, Tabussam, ismail, Muhammad Amjed, Riaz, Khadija, The Role of Microbiome in Psychiatric Diseases (Insomnia and Anxiety/Depression) with Microbiological Mechanisms, Advanced Gut & Microbiome Research, 2023, 1566684, 9 pages, 2023.  Emergency Resources   The Trevor Project: Provides crisis support specifically for LGBTQ+ youth through phone (1-866-488-7386), text (START to 678-678), and online chat. Your phone might be doing more than stealing time. It may be quietly taxing your mood, your attention, and the basic habits that keep you well. We found a fascinating research study that tested a simple but radical idea: block mobile internet access on a smartphone for two weeks while still letting people call and text, and then measure what changes in mental health, well-being, and focus. We walk through how the researchers designed the experiment with 467 adults, why this kind of randomized setup helps answer the causation question, and what they actually measured: depression, anxiety, social anxiety, life satisfaction, positive and negative mood, plus a real sustained attention task instead of just “I feel more focused.” Then we get into the headline-worthy outcomes, including the stat that about 91% of participants improved in at least one area and the surprising attention boost researchers estimated as roughly equivalent to reversing about ten years of age-related decline. We also dig into the “why” behind the results, because the point isn't to demonize smartphones. When the constant portal to social media, news, email and scrolling disappears, many people naturally spend more time sleeping, moving their bodies, getting outside and seeing other humans in real life. We talk about who may benefit most, what the limitations are, and practical ways to test the idea without going extreme: deleting the stickiest apps, setting phone-free zones, and experimenting with computer-only access. “Be proud of your scars. Be proud of the stuff that has knocked you down. Be proud of the crap, the adversity that you've gone through and it didn't break you. You came through the other side of the tunnel.” - Jay Glazer They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. This is especially true for Jay Glazer - and for his latest book: Unbreakable: How I Turned My Depression and Anxiety into Motivation and You Can Too If you've been watching Jay on camera over the years, you might find it hard to believe that, under the surface, he lives with an almost daily struggle with anxiety and depression. But he doesn't let it keep him down or stop him dead in his tracks - instead he uses it as fuel for his relentless drive and motivation. In today's interview, we go deep on the importance of loyalty, being of service, and the importance of learning to build yourself up from the inside out, rather than looking for validation only from the outside. If you've ever struggled with anxiety and depression and felt like you had to “fake it” to get through the day, this one's for you. If you're lying awake with racing thoughts, feeling constant overwhelm, or wondering if your midlife anxiety is "normal" or something more serious, this conversation will change how you think about mental health. Dr. Kristine Gravino, a psychologist specializing in midlife women, reveals why one out of two women struggle with anxiety and depression during this phase and it's directly connected to your dropping estrogen levels. We're diving deep into the questions you're actually asking: When is Xanax okay? Is that nightly wine helping or hurting? What does "regulating your nervous system" actually mean beyond the trendy Instagram posts? And most importantly, what CAN you do about racing thoughts and constant anxiety without buying more gadgets or taking more pills?  Dr. Gravino shares the breathing technique you're probably doing wrong (hint: it's not the inhale that calms you down), why your brain desperately needs carbohydrates even though you've been told to fear them for 30 years, and the bare minimum strategies that actually work when you're feeling completely paralyzed by overwhelm. Plus, I'm opening up about my recent health journey with histamine intolerance and how it completely changed my understanding of the nervous system-cortisol-anxiety connection. This isn't just another conversation about "self-care", rather, it's about understanding what's actually happening in your body and getting real, science-backed tools to feel better now.   Catch the full episode on YOUTUBE HERE: https://bit.ly/MidlifeConversationsYouTube    Learn More About Dr. Kristine Gravino Instagram ➜ https://www.instagram.com/DrKGravinoWellness  Website ➜   https://drkgravinowellness.com/    Free Gifts for being a listener of Midlife Conversations! Mitchell shares his journey into combat sports starting in 2006, initially training for MMA after a background in baseball, football, weightlifting, and bodybuilding, seeking new competition as he aged. He discusses jiu-jitsu techniques like pulling guard, the sport's accessibility for all ages and fitness levels, and its physical benefits, including safe training on cushioned mats. The conversation emphasizes mental health advantages, such as building camaraderie, combating anxiety and depression through routines and challenges, fostering trust among training partners, and providing a "third place" for men amid societal pressures. They touch on testosterone therapy's role in men's health, critiques of government overreach (e.g., regulations shutting down businesses), cultural rot, drug legalization debates, and personal growth, with Mitchell promoting his studio for self-improvement and community.

Send us a textYour body can't tell the difference between a bear on the trail and a betrayal in your home—and that's why anxiety feels like a siren you can't shut off. We go deep on how the nervous system reacts to infidelity, why depression can masquerade as “laziness,” and how to stop making big life decisions while your brain is in threat mode. Instead of chasing certainty with phone checks and late-night spirals, we unpack a calmer path: regulate first, decide second. We share a clear framework for separating intuition from anxiety. Anxiety is loud, urgent, and catastrophic; intuition is quiet, steady, and specific. You'll learn simple, repeatable practices to create safety in your body—guided breath paired with a vivid safe-place image, hand-on-heart grounding, movement and shaking to release stuck emotion, ragdoll resets, sunlight and bare feet on grass, and even a splash of cold water to nudge your system back to balance. These tools help you break hypervigilant loops and pull out of shutdown so you can hear your own voice again.Along the way, Jen opens up about “functional freeze,” raising kids while numb, and the moment she realized nothing was wrong with her—she was living with betrayal trauma. That insight reshaped her approach: you can't think your way out of betrayal; you have to feel it to heal it. With practice, the alarm quiets, clarity returns, and choices become wiser. You are not broken. Your reactions make sense, and with the right support you can rebuild safety, reclaim agency, and create a future that feels calm, sturdy, and yours. If this resonates, follow and share the show. What if your mood struggles aren't a “chemical imbalance,” but a nutrient imbalance? In this episode of The Integrative Health Podcast, Dr. Jen sits down with functional nutrition therapist Laurie Hammer, founder of the Calm Mom Method, to explore how amino acid therapy can naturally support anxiety, depression, eating disorders, focus issues, and emotional regulation.Laurie shares her personal healing journey from bulimia and lifelong depression, and explains why so many women—especially moms—are unknowingly deficient in the raw materials the brain needs to make serotonin, dopamine, GABA, and endorphins.Together, they break down how targeted amino acids can bring fast relief, how to test your own neurotransmitter needs, and why rebuilding the brain's chemistry through nutrients is often more effective than relying on medications alone.Dr. Jen and Laurie Hammer discuss amino acid therapy as a natural approach for anxiety, depression, and emotional instability. Learn how nutrient deficiencies impact neurotransmitters and how targeted amino acids can restore mood, focus, and calm.

Mental health challenges are real and common. Many of them do require professional help. Many of us, however, make our situation worse through our own actions. Many of us resist the Lord's plan to our own peril. Join me in the next episode of Catholic Life Coach For Men as I talk about a cool overlap between psychology and the faith: that of how our resistance and fear of something can make the situation blow up horribly. Accepting, even welcoming, something we may not find comfortable (but isn't what we want to make it mean) can transform our experience. When we bring the Lord into the picture, and accept Him and His plan, the effect is even more powerful. This goes far beyond anxiety or depression, and into our unhappiness in almost every part of life. Also, I'm announcing my course on Anger. It's a collection of powerful ideas and exercises that will help you regain control of your temper - and protect those you love! You can find it here: St Joseph's Way

Welcome back to When Words Fail Music Speaks, the podcast where we battle the darkness of depression with the undeniable power of music. I'm your host, James Cox, a self‑declared “professional handicapped” champion of mental‑health advocacy, and today we've got a truly inspiring guest who lives the mission we preach.Joining us is Craig Jamieson—the creative force behind the Canadian pop‑rock outfit Craig Jamison & the Lucky Winmore Band. Craig blends 80's synth nostalgia, modern hooks, punk‑edge chords, and indie‑rock flair into a sound that's as eclectic as his influences— from Bon Jovi and Michael Jackson to The Weeknd's synth‑wave vibes. In this episode we'll:Dive into Craig's latest releases—the bright, hook‑laden single “Honey,” the heartfelt follow‑up “Get to You,” and the mantra‑driven anthem “Come Around,” which serves as the theme for his Dance Away Depression charity event.Explore his personal journey with anxiety, panic attacks, and depression, and how songwriting became his lifeline—turning depersonalization and chemical‑imbalance battles into lyrical mantras that help listeners “weather the storm.”Highlight his partnership with radio‑promo guru Caden Gordon and Big Records, the upcoming “Perfect Timing” track, a forthcoming Christmas EP, and a mysterious, world‑concern‑driven song titled “Doomsday.”Spotlight his mental‑health work with the Canadian nonprofit Mind Your Mind and the Dance Away Depression fundraiser, showing how music can raise both awareness and resources for youth battling depression.Uncover his creative process, from the 80's posters that still line his teenage bedroom walls to the way he lets each song's vibe dictate genre—pop‑punk, synth‑wave, folk, even swing‑jazz.Whether you're a fan of nostalgic synths, a songwriter looking for a mental‑health ally, or simply someone who believes “when words fail, music speaks,” this conversation is a reminder that a single chord can connect, move, and heal.Stay tuned—because after this interview you'll hear snippets of Craig's tracks, learn how you can support his charitable events, and get the exact URLs to stream “Honey,” “Get to You,” and “Come Around.”Let's turn the volume up and let the music do the talking.

Hey team! Today I'm talking with Nick Jonsson, a best-selling author, executive coach, and co-founder of Executives' Global Network. Nick is the author of Executive Loneliness: The 5 Pathways to Overcoming Isolation, Stress, Anxiety & Depression in the Modern Business World. His work focuses on helping leaders tackle isolation, burnout, and addiction while finding healthier, more sustainable ways to succeed. Now I realize that doesn't seem particularly ADHD focused, but I thought that this would be a good interview to take because adults with ADHD have a substantially increased risk of substance use disorders. And so while Nick's work doesn't specifically cover ADHD, there is still a lot that you can glean from it. In our conversation, Nick shares his own journey through loneliness, denial, and alcohol addiction, and how vulnerability and connection became essential tools for his recovery. We dig into practical strategies for opening up in safe spaces, replacing harmful coping mechanisms with meaningful activities, and creating accountability systems that support long-term well-being. We also touch on how social media and other modern habits can quietly feed into loneliness, and what it takes to build resilience against them. If you'd life to follow along on the show notes page you can find that at HackingYourADHD.com/248 YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/y835cnrk Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/HackingYourADHD This Episode's Top Tips Frame recovery as replacement, not deprivation. When looking to break out of unhealthy coping mechanisms, be they alcohol, social media, or some other addiction, deliberately plan what will give you that same connection without the negative costs. Having planned positive alternatives like exercise, hobbies, or group activities can make all the difference in following through with your intentions. Watch out for the “gray zone” of addiction; you don't need to wait until hitting rock bottom to start changing habits. If you are questioning your relationship with alcohol, social media, or other damaging habits, take the time to reflect on what is really driving those habits. Remember, you don't have to make something worse before making it better. When you can, volunteering in support groups or mentoring others not only helps them, but it can also reinforce your own sense of belonging and purpose.
