What is the historical use of marijuana for medical purposes? Are there legalities associated with medical marijuana use? When is medical cannabis a potential therapeutic option for patients with mitochondrial disease? Are there guidelines on dosing and use? Is it true that medical cannabis is for pain and seizures only? Is marijuana addictive, even when used for medical purposes? Have there ever been safety studies published about use of marijuana for medical purposes? Join us with Dr. Fran Kendall to get the answers to these questions and more regarding the use of medical marijuana (cannabis oil) for treatment in mitochondrial disease patients. Georgia just signed into law the use of cannabis oil for a number of diseases, including mitochondrial disease. Several Mito families in Georgia advocated on behalf of this legislation. While 35 other states have passed similar legislation, Georgia is the first state to include mitochondrial disease in the list of disorders to be treated. Dr. Kendall will touch on historical perspective, mechanisms of action, dosing, safety and outcome data. About the Speaker Dr. Kendall trained and served on the staff at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School for a number of years. She was the previous 50% owner of a successful genetic laboratory/healthcare provider (Horizon Molecular Medicine), and has extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of children with a wide array of metabolic disorders. She brings this vast experience to her private practice, VMP, LCC, as president and founder. Dr. Kendall is a well respected pediatrician as well as biochemical geneticist, and she has authored numerous research articles on rare diseases ranging from Nieman Pick Type C and mitochondrial disease. As one of the few clinical mitochondrial disease experts, she has a long-term interest in research and clinical aspects of rare metabolic diseases.
Evolutions In Vaporizer Technology and Cannabis Oil Cartridges with Mike Hogan And Thompson Duke today on NCIA's Cannabis Industry Voice only on The Cannabis Radio. Today we start by talking about the vaporizer market. The devices are one part, and the actual cannabis oil formulas go into the cartridges. There's kind of a standard, mass-produced vape pen battery you can get for $10, and most cartridges fit them, but there are also proprietary designs that require specific pods or cartridges. So we ask, what other evolutions of the vaporizer designs and technologies have you seen?On the other hand, there's the oil, as we mentioned, and we saw a health crisis hit our industry in 2019 and published a white paper on the vaping crisis. There was an issue with the vitamin E acetate being used in the formula, Massachusetts even banned them entirely for a while. We discuss the reports that this was putting people in the hospital with lung infections. 420 Cancer Survivor Corrie Yelland joins us today on Hempresent with Vivian McPeak only on Cannabis Radio. Today's guest on Hempresent is Corrie Yelland, who hails from Victoria, B.C., Canada. Since that time Corrie has been on a mission to help others do the same. She works tirelessly, 10-12 hours a day, speaking to hundreds of people weekly from around the world, and claims to have participated in saving over 1,500 lives to date. In this week's podcast, Mitch and Andrew discuss the implications of a recent drug driving legislation, and how exactly this new policy will play out in Victoria. On the 14th of October 2020, the Victorian parliament passed the legislation to allow medicinal cannabis users to drive with the medication in their system. Victoria is the first state in Australia to implement these changes, and Mitch and Andrew see this as a hopeful sign that a similar legislation could be rolled out across the country in future. Current roadside drug tests only pick up the presence of cannabis in a driver's system, without accounting for whether the driver is impaired. These new drug driving laws will take into account a patient's valid prescription for medicinal cannabis, and will apply a limit on THC levels – much like a blood alcohol concentration limit would. This new legislation will provide those being treated with medicinal cannabis the added freedoms of travel, while also safeguarding Victorian roads.Check out Episode 4 of the AltMed Podcast for more.
In this week's podcast Mitch and Andrew sit down with CBD Reviews Australia founder Steven Ng to chat about how a lack of reliable access to cannabis products and information can harm the consumer. Steven Ng is a passionate cannabis advocate and a founder of CBD Reviews Australia, an online community where members review cannabis and hemp products. Steven analyses medicinal cannabis products for quality and composition and publishes this data openly and freely. In Australia, 90% of cannabis products are still being accessed via the black market as opposed to legal avenues. Much of this is due to the country's conservative regulatory policies, and the lack of publicly available information about these legal, medicinal alternatives. The barrier of entry placed on legally obtaining medicinal CBD can draw consumers to purchasing from the black market, where there is an assumption that these products are cheaper, of better quality and more easily attainable. However, with a lack of data, health monitoring processes or quality control in these unregulated marketplaces, consumers are placed in harm's way. Check out episode 4 of the AltMed Podcast
In this week's podcast Mitch and Andrew sit down with Under Jungle director Joshua Savage to chat about the distinctions of the Australian cannabis marketplace. Joshua Savage has assisted with the development and operations of various innovative projects in the international cannabis arena, and has currently set base in Australia. With the development of his tech startup Under Jungle, a compliant, wholesale cannabis and hemp marketplace for vendors, Joshua offers up qualified insights into the reality of the emerging Australian CBD industry in this podcast. When comparing the domestic cannabis marketplace to international counterparts, Australia is subject to a more stringent regulatory barriers in terms of access and manufacturing. In the US, individual states set up policy structures and separate industry sectors for a booming medical cannabis industry, as well as a recreational cannabis industry too. With a push for higher GMP standards, the barriers of tight policy regulation and high production costs, Australian vendors will be competing on an unlevel playing field when exporting cannabis products internationally, and the industry may see reduced product availability from domestic producers. Check out Episode 3 of the Altmed Podcast for more on how Australia's cannabis marketplace is being shaped.
In this week's AltMed Podcast, Andrew and Mitch chat about the regulatory processes to be aware of when accessing medicinal CBD in Australia. Australian regulatory bodies take a conservative and cautious approach when issuing medicinal cannabis. As there isn't a great level of clinical research to warrant the prescription of those products, medicinal cannabis is often only justified as a last resort avenue when conventional treatment has proven to be ineffective. Additionally, medicinal CBD is an unapproved therapeutic good that is only prescribed at a health professional's discretion. A doctor will therefore need to weigh in a number of considerations concerning the patient's condition and health history in order to recommend medicinal CBD. However, since many in the medical field have little or no clinical experience with this alternative treatment, it's advisable to consult a specialist clinic for a second opinion. While Andrew and Mitch are not healthcare professionals, this podcast offers an insight into the steps that should be taken when exploring medicinal CBD as a viable alternative to conventional treatments.
