ep. 111: Volkert Engelsman · Marketing Mastermind | Guru of Differentiation Forces of Nature is a talkshow miniseries featuring dynamic leaders from across food & environmental movements. Tune-in for a dose of optimism. FOOD FULL OF THOUGHT w/ host: Aaron Niederhelman Volkert Engelsman is CEO of EOSTA, the EU's largest importer of organic and biological fruit. Volkert is nothing short of a mastermind when it comes to marketing product differentiation, and amplifying how those differences benefit each stakeholder involved. In this conversation we hear what it has taken for Engelsman to become a leading force connecting the worlds of healthier food and thriving soils. “When you commoditize products, you anonymize origin and backstory,” explains Engelsman in describing why he launched food integrity platform Nature & More. The Sustainability Flower by Nature & More is used to evaluate, manage and communicate the net positive environmental impact and social welfare achievements of organic growers and supply. It's a sticker that validates production and sourcing claims on each piece of fruit, and a robust platform behind it all that gives it the integrity to make the storytelling stick with consumers. If you're a grower, retailer or consumer like us all - listen-in to this episode to hear how we'll get to a point of food full of thought. - THE KAYAK OF REGEN INCENTIVES In an effort to establish financial rewards for the positive externalities derived from regenerative land management, Volkert has initiated the Business Alliance for Regenerative Agriculture (BARA). The objective of BARA is to work with existing initiatives, and suss-out new reward structures that incentivize more stakeholders for ecosystem health and the social benefits tied to regenerative agriculture. COALITION OF THE WILLING Eighty (80) initiatives and companies from all over the world have come together to launch BARA. At October's kick-off gathering held at EOSTA's home office in Waddinxveen, Netherlands, cohosts Climate Farmers of Berlin and EOSTA defined seven working groups to build upon: Carbon Methodologies, Policy Engagement, Trading Positive Externalities, Sharing & Exchanging Experiences, Consumer Awareness & Retail Storytelling, Setting up Farms & Transforming Regions, and Organic Meets Regenerative. A next BARA conference is scheduled for 2023. It's been designated to review initial working group findings, and to continue to move the ball. For decades, Volkert has used a unique marketing prowess to differentiate better quality foods grown in healthy soils as acts of climate & social action. The Nature-&-More platform and now BARA are intuitive POCs that are ripe to translate the positive impacts of food with the UN's 17 SDGs. It is palatable action in every mouthful that benefits people and the planet. - “Tomorrow's profit will include externalities, and social and environmental costs – which is precisely what is happening right now in Europe. In fact, you see it everywhere this is gradually descending into the DNA of financial markets, taxonomies, and fiscal incentives. The definition of profit is changing.” - Volkert Engelsman - CALL TO ARMS Volkert Engelsman has a call to action for us all in food / planetary movements... get out there and Dream, Dance and Deliver. According to Engelsman, we need more skilled and ambitions (big) dreamers on this stuff. We learn that if you really want to make change happen – it's on you – so, you'd better learn how to dance. Figure out how to make nice with others, how to choose partners, and how to keep dancing. This creates results. Often smaller wins, but more results. It's consistency of those small wins that gets us to tackling those big dreams.

In April of this year, 2021, 12 companies came together in a call to action to help eradicate poverty through a commitment to build a living wage economy together. IDH is working to secure living wages through the Roadmap on Living Wages - a platform of more than 30 companies that work to strengthen international alignment and build tangible solutions regarding living wage. Eosta, a leading importer, packer, and distributor of organically grown fresh produce, is a member of this platform and regards living wage as the most important topic in the social domain for the coming years. We spoke with Eosta's CEO, Volkert Engelsman and Annelotte Crena de Iongh, Program manager at IDH, to better understand the work that is underway and what still needs to be done to secure living wages at a global level.

Did you know that the thin walled produce you eat can be some of the most concerning foods in your diet. From everything we think we know - that just seems counterintuitive. How can Fruit & Veg possibly worse than processed food, high fructose sugar, feedlot beef? Well, that may come down to the eye of the beholder. Concerns with neurotoxins and hormone disruptors used extensively in common pesticides throughout conventional production, or that of glyphosate are real and are worthy of scrutiny. On Sourcing Matters episode 21 we welcome Volkert Engelsman, CEO of the EU's largest importer of organic and biological produce - EOSTA of the Netherlands. Engelsman is a global thought-leader fighting for cleaner food and healthier soils through a unique process of engaging more stakeholders in sourcing. "When you commoditize products, you anonymize origin and backstory" explains Engelsman in describing why he launched trans & trace technology platform Nature & More to validate the integrity of his supply chain. Now, as the backbone of their produce distribution - this framework brought mainstream through a "Sustainability Flower" is used to evaluate, manage and communicate the sustainability achievements of organic growers. The six flower petals deal with ecology: soil, water, air, plants, animals and energy. The heart of the flower shows the words "freedom", "justice" and "solidarity", which refer to cultural, societal and economical sustainability respectively. Along with the UN and Ernst & Young - Volkert Engelsman and the team at EOSTA have levered the Nature & More framework to prove healthier & cleaner food has greater value than the cheap stuff. The pilot program has been labeled "True Cost Accounting for Food, Farming & Finance". We learn that French Government has calculated a 54b Euro impact of externalized costs from contamination on the water supply and environmental impact tied to conventional food production. More over, the UN calculates $2.8 Trillion of environmental externalized costs and $2.1 Trillion in social damage tied to extractive models of agriculture. Engelsman explains that's about the equivalent of the total revenues of all food products from around the world. “The report makes clear that organic food is not too expensive, but rather conventional food is too cheap.” - details Engelsman. in 2015 Engelsman launched a viral initiative to engage everyday citizens, VIPs, and political leaders to Save our Soils. With 30 football fields of soil being lost every minute to irresponsible farming practices, this UN-backed Save Our Soils initiative aims to inform consumers about the urgent need to halt the loss of irreplaceable soils. To amplify the impact Engelsman employs ambassadors like Prince Charles, Julia Roberts, King of the Netherlands, Dalai Lama, Bishop Desmond Tutu, activist Vandana Shiva and conservationist founder of North Face Douglas Tompkins to support efforts in preserving soils, and promoting clean food on a shrinking planet with a fresh look at true costs. Have a listen, and hear what's going on around the world. There are some pretty exciting concepts ripe for change. This guy, Volkert Engelsman of the Netherlands, is a driving force teeming with insight and creativity set on changing the world for the better. www.SourcingMatters.show
The biggest threat to sustainability is anonymity. Welcome Investing in Regenerative Agriculture, investing as if the planet mattered. CEO of Eosta, international distributor of fresh organic and fair fruits and vegetables. www.eosta.com Volkert's views: - "The biggest threat to sustainability is anonymity" - "If I don’t know you I can exploit you" - "Trade in our case is not about buying low and selling high, it is responsibly running a supply chain" - "Marketing sustainability automatically leads to monetising sustainability" He prefers to talk only about profit but we have to factor in the costs of people and planet. So Eosta started measuring the 20% of the kpis which make up 80% of the impact to find the true cost of organic. The true cost of organic: http://www.eosta.com/en/content/true-cost-food-now-stores-all-over-europe Organic apples are for instance 19 euro cents healthier per kilo compared to conventional apples. Only looking at the pesticide differences. By taking data from the EFSA European food safety agency on pesticide residue, and fed that data to the models of DALI disability life year calculation of the WHO. "Organic is not too expensive, conventional (chemical) is too cheap" To raise awareness for the proactive healthcare of food. Eosta will be looking at the health benefits of organic food with a campaign called: doctor Goodfood Where to start investing in a food system for the future in quite simple according to Volkert: We have to look after our: - Soils, farmers who are not building soil do not deserve investment capital - Water, invest in farmers who are building their water holding capacity - Biodiversity, a direct connection between biodiversity and the ability of a plant to withstand diseases - Climate Change, agriculture is with 40% one of the biggest contributors to climate change emissions, of that 40% meat production takes the biggest stake. We can't keep eating meat like we are doing now. As the demand for organic is soaring, supply has to catch up and there is a huge investment potential to scale up and convert growers. “Freeing the farmers from being held hostage by the agro chemical input business, that parasites on farming like the pharmaceutical industry parasites on your health. By selling a few pills (or agrochemicals ) with a few side effects, for which they have new pills or agrochemicals again” Standard and Poor’s acquires True Cost https://www.trucost.com/trucost-news/sp-dow-jones-indices-acquires-trucost/ Stranded assets in fossil fuels https://www.carbontracker.org Please hit the share button if you think this interview is relevant for someone you know!
