The proposed plan would store CO₂ 4,400 feet underground, with public meetings set to provide accurate information and address safety concerns, particularly regarding groundwater. Mayor Volkert emphasizes the importance of attending these meetings and reminds residents to check the city website and local news outlets for updates. Other city news includes street improvement projects in the northeast section of town and spring cleanup events, along with reminders to dispose of large items properly. Residents are also encouraged to follow traffic rules while using bicycles and electric bikes. A major initiative known as Project Big River, located in Galva, is set to tackle carbon emissions with an ambitious plan to capture, transport, and store over 725,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. The project is a collaboration with Big River Resources and is designed as a near-plant, multi-landowner solution. The application for Class Six status has already been submitted, signaling progress toward full regulatory approval for underground storage. Mayor Volket said the permit process could take two years to complete. Lapis will attend the public meetings to answer questions about the process and safety measures. This significant step showcases the region's commitment to responsible energy practices and innovative environmental technology. Big River Resources is pushing forward with an ambitious carbon capture initiative aimed at reducing industrial emissions in the region. With a Class Six permit application now in, the roadmap includes acquiring pore space, drilling a stratigraphic well in 2025, and proposing an official permit submission by 2026. Grants were also discussed for maintaining and replanting the city's trees. Cemetery cleanup begins on March 29th. Items need to be removed from the cemetery before March 29th, and then things can be put back on after April 3rd.

Galva Mayor Rich Volkert joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to recap the June 2, 2025, Galva City Council Meeting.  The water department expects a new truck by July, improving local service. Chief Townsend issued a reminder: burn days remain Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, with only yard waste permitted. Large item pickup can be arranged through City Hall or Eagle Enterprises. Hydrant flushing has wrapped up for the season, and two faulty hydrants have been repaired. A grassy lot between Market Street's former vet office and the dentist will soon be offered for sale, with a minimum bid set at $775. Mayor Volkert said, "It would make a good parking space for a business." June 13th marks the next car cruise-in event, starting at 5 PM, with free food available while supplies last. Galva residents are encouraged to participate in the upcoming clean-up week, running from June 16th to June 21st. It's crucial to bring proof of residency when dropping off most items at the city's maintenance yard, located between Preferred Home Health Care and Mary's Family Dining and Lounge. Please note that hazardous waste and yard waste are not accepted, and fees apply for tires and electronics. Elderly and handicapped residents unable to transport items should call City Hall to schedule a single curbside pickup. All items should be on the curb by 7 AM on June 16th for pickup, but please don't place items on the curb more than two days before. Staff will not retrieve items from backyards or inside structures. Contact Galva City Hall at 309-932-2555 for details. Shingles, antifreeze, LP tanks, yard waste, paint, or any hazardous material will not be accepted. Televisions and electronic components will be accepted for a fee at Eagle Enterprises during their normal business hours. Call Eagle Enterprises at 932-2936 if you have any questions. The maintenance yard will have extended hours from June 16th to 19th, from 7 AM to 5 PM, to allow for better convenience for residents. On June 20th, the yard will be open until 3 PM, and on June 21st, the yard will be open from 7 AM to noon.

Galva Mayor Volkert joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to recap the Monday City Council meeting. Galva's City Council welcomed three members following April's election—John Wirth joins for Ward 2, while Doug Anderson and Jayme Hopping continue serving their wards. The American Legion begins poppy sales for Memorial Day and invites volunteers to place flags at Galva Cemetery on May 11, 2025, meeting at 7 AM. Citywide cleanup runs June 16–21, with pickup available on June 16th; contact Galva City Hall at 309-932-2555  for details, especially regarding tire disposal fees. Galva acquired 44 acres near the park district, and the park district is looking to expand recreational areas. The park district intends to use the five acres to add a parking area, soccer field, and ball diamond. The city is still installing the solar arrays, and when completed, residents will have the option to purchase electricity from the solar array. Mayor Volkert said the city will never ask you for financial information. If you have questions regarding individuals going door-to-door selling electricity, contact City Hall. The city has demolished some dilapidated buildings, and they have one building left. Anyone interested in opening a business in the final building or building on the land from demolished buildings should contact Galva City Hall for more information. The park district taxing boundaries need to match the city boundaries, so land around the ethanol plant has been annexed into the city, allowing for a larger tax base for the Galva Park District. Galva added a couple of trinkets and pictures to the Henry County time capsule, which will be opened far into the future.

Galva Mayor Rich Volkert joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to recap the Monday, April 7th, Galva City Council meeting. The recent Galva City Council meeting addressed several key updates. Mayor Rich Volkert discussed proclamations for Junior Achievement Day and Arbor Day, emphasizing support despite the program's inactivity in Galva. The city has received 60 trees from Henry County's Soil and Conservation. Starting in May, a new water billing system will eliminate red tag notices. Additionally, cemetery plot prices will rise to $2,500 to fund perpetual care and land acquisition. Jim Hartman was also honored with a plaque, recognizing his 8-year service as he retires. In a heartfelt tribute, the Galva community honored Dr. Scott Caravello at last night's council meeting. After running Galva Pharmacy for over three decades, Caravello's store was among the 2,900 pharmacies that closed this year. Mayor Volkert praised his dedication, saying, "He has done so much for the community." Meanwhile, the city faces financial challenges after Illinois abolished the 1% municipal food sales tax, costing Galva up to $150,000 to $200,000 annually. Officials debated reestablishing the tax locally. In other news, the city is seeking developers for a remaining Chevrolet dealership building to avoid demolition. In Galva, Mayor Rich Volkert addressed concerns about understaffing in the local police department during a recent city council meeting. While ideally staffed with five officers, the department is currently operating with three. A new recruit has been added and is undergoing training, expected to join the force fully within a few months. Additionally, Volkert discussed the city's collaboration with Hometown Consulting to create a detailed master plan aimed at attracting new businesses and securing government grants—a crucial step after missing out on funding for the park district. Galva Mayor Rich Volkert joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to recap the Monday, November 4, 2024, City Council Meeting.  The meeting was brief so election officials could set up for Election Day on Tuesday, November 5th. The meeting started with a presentation from Kim Hoffman regarding the audit of the City of Galva's finances. The city has a new system for handling cash, which was the main concern of the auditor. The new accounting system allows more transparency in city finances. Mid-Century Fiber presented the City of Galva with plaques for being an up-to-date, 21st Century City. 

Galva Mayor Rich Volkert joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to talk about the October 7, 2024, Galva City Council Meeting. Dixline was honored at the meeting for their 100 years of service in Galva. Dixline is a fourth-generation run business.  They were presented a plaque and a key to the city. They passed an electrical code ordinance for new construction in the city. They will be raising cemetery fees on May 1, 2025. The city has lost approximately $400,000. The fees were last raised in 2008. You have time to purchase a cemetery lot before the price increases, but the law doesn't allow the sale of the plot for more than the purchase price.  The council couldn't agree on amending the water fees, so they will add that to the next council meeting to discuss. The city will conduct the required fire hydrant flushing in late October. The city will issue a notice to residents with the date and time. Hydrant flushing can cause a decrease in water pressure and/or discolored water. Zack Thompson won the bid for a plot of city property to build a crematorium in Galva. Police Chief Kraig Townsend was awarded a grant for Tasers. The Galva Police Department was given radios as well, which helps the department's budget. Halloween will be on Thursday, October 31st, from 5 to 7 PM.

Galva Mayor Rich Volkert was our guest on Wake Up Tri-Counties on Wednesday. The mayor joined us to talk about finally settling a dispute over parking regulations in Galva. A nine month discussion among Galva citizens and the City of Galva closed on Monday with a compromise that appears to have settled the matter. The Mayor addresses the parking kerfuffle and then goes on to cover other important aspects of Monday's Galva City Council Meeting. The next Galva City Council Meeting will be earlier next month. Mayor Volkert explained that with Memorial Day falling on Monday, May 26th, the City needed to move the date for next month's meeting to the previous week. 

The folks at Galva Ready to Grow demonstrated the power of their fundraising ability at the most recent Galva City Council Meeting. The community group raised $4000 dollars that was delivered to the City of Galva this week. The money raised will go toward the placing of a Handicap Swing at Wiley Park in Galva. The money raised is just the start the for the Handicap Swing plan which the Mayor says may not get done this year but is a project that is in the works. The Mayor then took us through the rest of Monday's Galva City Council Meeting and you can hear all about it in our Wake Up Tri-Counties conversation. 

The Mayor of Galva Rich Volkert joined Wake Up Tri-Counties on Wednesday, January 24th, 2024, to wrap up Monday's Galva City Council Meeting. In a lengthy meeting, the City of Galva announced that several nuisance properties, abandoned homes, had been torn down and the properties were being put up for sale. Two of the properties were announced as sold during the meeting. Two more properties are set to be announced for sale soon. Mayor Volkert also spoke to WKEI about the City of Galva response to the recent snow events and praised City workers for their dedication and hard work while reminding residents to make sure to clear the way for plows.

The top item on the agenda was a presentation by Henry County Administrator Erin Knackstedt and Economic Development Director Jim Kelly. They attended the meeting to talk about the attempt to revive the Henry County Tourism Bureau. With Galva having a number of events such as the Levitt Amp Concert Series, a huge Fourth of July celebration, and The Back Road Music Festival, being part of a brand new Henry County Tourism Bureau makes sense for the City of Galva. Galva Mayor Rich Volkert joined Wake Up Tri-Counties on Wednesday to wrap up Monday's Galva City Council Meeting. The lengthy meeting featured several presentations to the Council including hearing about a cancelled plan for a CO2 Pipeline that would have traveled through Galva and a second CO2 pipeline project that has recently faced local opposition. This pipeline would not go directly through Galva but would pass along city lines, close enough for Galva residents to have genuine safety concerns and concerns regarding the use of Eminent Domain to take land from land owners to be used for the pipeline. The Mayor discussed this and several other items from Monday's Galva City Council Meeting on Wake Up Tri-Counties. 

Galva Mayor Rich Volkert spoke with Wake Up Tri-Counties on Wednesday morning. The Mayor was on hand to wrap-up Monday's Galva City Council Meeting. During the meeting, the City Council heard from Hometown Consulting about ways the City of Galva can expand and support local businesses. Plans were approved to sell a Police Interceptor that is no longer in use by the City. And, organizers of the Galva Freedom Fest talked about their fundraising efforts getting underway once again with strong community support. 

I'm joined by Andy Volkert, the tournament director of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. It runs September 22-24th at four locations and is the longest running division one college tournament in the country. It is free and an amazing opportunity to see top level tennis from a courtside seat.

The Galva City Council met on Monday evening and Mayor Rich Volkert joined WKEI on Wednesday morning to talk about the meeting. A vigorous disagreement emerged during Monday's meeting over a proposal regarding regulating what and where parking and storage can be done on residential property. More than 100 residents signed a petition opposing the regulation which to this point was only a discussion item. The Mayor also talked about ongoing projects, the huge success of The Back Road Music Festival and upcoming events in the City of Galva. 

The Mayor of Galva, Rich Volkert joined Wake Up Tri-Counties on Friday to wrap-up Monday's Galva City Council Meeting. At the meeting, the City of Galva recognized Al and Shelly DeCrane for their dedication to Conservation. Recently Shelly was honored as Conservation Woman of the Year while Al received the Conservation Director of the Year Award. Also on Monday, it was announced that Bishop Hill had found someone to care for the Bishop Hill Cemetery. The City of Galva was planning to vote on an agreement to help the Bishop Hill Cemetery with the aid of the Galva Sexton's Office. But that was taken off the table with the announcement that Bishop Hill had made a separate, new agreement. Mayor Rich Volkert discussed these items and the many events coming up in Galva in August on Wake Up Tri-Counties on Friday. 

The Mayor of Galva Rich Volkert was our guest on Wednesday morning on WKEI to discuss this week's Galva City Council Meeting. On the agenda, the City of Galva has finally closed a little used railroad crossing following a study that showed it was hardly ever used. It's been a two year effort by the City of Galva to close the crossing. Hometown Consulting gave a presentation to the City of Galva on Monday night. The company is consulting with the City of Galva on downtown re-development programs and offered several ideas that they have gleaned from speaking with residents and assessing Galva's downtown area. And the Mayor addressed the change of the fireworks date from the traditional July 4th date to July 8th. The decision was based on the staffing shortage at the company that provides the fireworks. They were not available on the 4th of July and so the new date for Galva fireworks is July 8th at dusk. 

The Galva City Council met for the first time since April's consolidated election. That meant the swearing in of the Mayor and members of the City Council. Mayor Rich Volkert joined WKEI on Wednesday to wrap up the meeting and talk about having been re-elected as Mayor of Kewanee. Mayor Volkert talked about welcoming new members of the staff, honoring former staff who were stepping away, and the Mayor talked about what's coming up in Galva with the start of the Back Road Music Festival around the corner and The Back Road Music Festival coming in August.
