Movie Meltdown - Episode 404 This week we kick-off our coverage of the Flyover Film Festival as we sit out on the veranda and talk with director Vincent Grashaw. Vincent's latest feature And Then I Go just made its worldwide premiere at the 2017 Los Angeles Film Festival before coming to Flyover. We discuss the challenges of getting his latest drama made and the way he tries to approach its sensitive subject matter. We also address his early films as well as his previous feature Coldwater and about his crazy experiences working on and producing the indie hit Bellflower. And while we come to terms with the fact that some of us never grow out of that awkward stage, we also bring up... Film Festivals, Arman Darbo and Sawyer Barth, the power of friendship, Get Out, shooting on-location, nothing to do with the industry, The Beguiled, back to school sales, I like to read other people's stuff and fall in love with it, someone stole my pencil, The Thin Red Line, Sunday night uneasiness, It Comes at Night, a very suburban feel, He Got Game, a form of trickery, The Babadook, unfiltered shame, Evan Glodell, you don't want to glamorous it, It Follows, working with kids, your world is only that big, he was somebody I really believed in, mental health, shooting in Louisville, elevated horror, there are no single answers to these tragedies, The Witch, everything hurts more, is that your wheelhouse, Saving Private Ryan, access to guns, you hit this wall, Trigger Street, probably very illegal?, Seven, a user review on IMDB, actually trying to get a feature made, The Basketball Diaries, we were all crazy at that time, ripping off other movies, Kids, if you only knew the hell we went through, we were just doing it, forensic investigation, true crime books and the most impressionable years. "...it was... I'd say the most down and dirty a group of friends... can make a movie." For more on the Louisville Film Society, go to: http://www.louisvillefilmsociety.org/
In our inaugural MoviesCast episode, we appropriately discuss debut films of various filmmakers - Michael Mann’s Thief, Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, Aronofsky’s Pi, and Evan Glodell’s Bellflower! In the news we have a new Indiana Jones movie, Edgar Wright’s new Dreamworks project, and Star Wars smashing through 50 million in advanced sales in US alone. We also talk about some stuff we’ve been watching recently - Ghost in the Shell and Jessica Jones. This is a bit of a rambly one, but all that means is more film discussion goodness, as we can’t help but slip into Bond Movies, Mission Impossible, Star Wars prequels, Morgan Freeman films, and frankly all manner of other things.

Evan moved to California in his early 20s with a group of close friends to pursue his dream of becoming a filmmaker. Evan worked for Internet start-up STIM TV where he conceptualized and starred in the edgy sitcom Boss Of The Glory. Evan has directed many music videos and worked as a cinematographer on feature-length horror film Placebo and the shorts Before Breakfast and Savanna.Bellflower, an intensely personal story incorporating many real life events, was Evan’s feature-length directorial debut. Bellflower became Evan’s true labor of love, causing him to sacrifice almost everything, including selling off all of his personal belongings and living in an abandoned wing of an office building to fund the film. Bellflower follows two friends as they venture out into the world to begin their adult lives. While waiting for the world to end, their call to excitement comes unexpectedly when one of them meets a charismatic young woman and falls hard in love. Quickly integrated into a new group of friends, they set off on a journey of betrayal, love, hate, infidelity, and extreme violence more devastating and fiery than any of their apocalyptic fantasies which in Bellflower are filled with cool customized cars, flame throwers and home bult wepons of mass destruction.
In the summer of 2008, a fiercely determined group of LA filmmakers set out to make a feature film with virtually no money. The film was BELLFLOWER, and under the leadership of writer/director/star Evan Glodell, and producer/co-star Vincent Grashaw, they spent the next three years achieving a fierce, singular vision that practically defines the term "independent spirit." Join NM regular Chris McCaleb as they discuss no-budget filmmaking, building your own digital camera system, sleeping on couches to survive, collaborating with 5 Second Films, creating an iconic movie car, and pursuing a dream against all odds. UPDATE! BELLFLOWER has been nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards - The John Cassavetes Award (Best Feature under $500,000) and Best Cinematography. Congratulations to Evan, Vincent, Joel and the entire Coatwolf team! BELLFLOWER is now available on Blu-Ray and DVD. Direct MP3 link

Lots to talk about on Episode 74 of Movie B.S. with Bayer and Snider. For one thing, it’s Eric’s birthday. Also, there were some movies. Jeff and Eric had possibly their biggest disagreement yet on “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark”: Jeff hated it, Eric liked it a lot. You make the call! They agreed that “Colombiana” is a generic and overlong action movie. Jeff saw the documentary “Senna” and called it the best doc of the year so far; he was less fond of “Our Idiot Brother,” starring Paul Rudd. Bayer and Snider both liked “The Interrupters,” a respectable doc about stopping violence in inner-city Chicago, directed by the man who made “Hoop Dreams.” Finally, they talked to Evan Glodell, the writer/director/producer/star of “Bellflower,” which both guys loved. Evan was very enthusiastic about his movie. You should go see it. QOTW: In honor of “Apollo 18,” which presents a horror twist on the Moon landing, what other historical event could be given the horror treatment? Give us your ideas, and we will steal them.
It’s the ’80s on Movie B.S. with Bayer and Snider. First up is the remake of the ’80s horror film “Fright Night” starring Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell and Imogen Poots. Both Eric and Jeff were a fan of the film, though Jeff seems a little surprised by how much he liked it. Next, it’s the remake of the ’80s action flick that originally starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. Now it stars Jason Momoa and Jeff and Eric say it’s just a little bit crazy. Finally it’s the romance “One Day.” What does that have to do with the ’80s? Well it takes place over the course of many years, starting with 1988, so there. We answer the QOTW: What bad 1980s movie do you think could be remade into a good one? Also, we have a special guest on the show next week! “Bellflower” opens in Portland on 8/26, and we’re going to have writer/director/star/producer/crazy person Evan Glodell on the show to talk about it! It will be fun! Let us know if you have any questions for him.
