“You have to love all your characters. Even if you're writing a bad guy. You, the writer, have to write them with love and empathy, and treat each character, give each character, a full life and a full arc in your story, even if their screen time is small. Essentially, if you were following that character, they also have a full story, a full life,” says actor/writer Brett Goldstein about how he approaches writing characters in film and TV. On today's episode, we chat with writer/director Will Bridges and writer/actor Brett Goldstein about their new film All of You, starring Imogen Poots and Brett Goldstein. The film centers on two best friends, Laura and Simon, who harbor an unspoken love for one another even after a futuristic test matches one of them up with their supposed soulmate. Though the set-up of the story sounds like science-fiction, the movie stays firmly grounded in reality and examines the human need for love and how we often sabotage that love. If you're a fan of the show Black Mirror, you likely know Will Bridges' Emmy-winning episode “USS Callister,” the only Black Mirror episode to get a sequel. Brett Goldstein is perhaps most famous for playing Roy Kent on Ted Lasso, where he was a writer on the show before acting on it. He talks about his self-taped audition for the show and how taking that one risk changed everything for him. Bridges and Goldstein talk about working together on an early project where they were forced to bunk in a “spider infested Airbnb,” and they also discuss the nuances of their writing in the film All of You, including why they left out all exposition. “We never wanted to be too specific about where Simon and Laura are in their relationship, but we want to draw you in quickly. We want you playing detective: Where are they now? What's going on with them? So we just trusted the audience would get it,” Bridges says. They also discuss why you never see Laura or Simon separate from each other. “One of the rules of the film,” says Goldstein, “we only see them when they're together. We don't see their lives when they're apart, and that's kind of fun and interesting to me, that we are watching the film of them. We are not watching the film of what it's like to be Simon, what's it like to be Laura, we only know what it's like to be them.” To hear more, listen to the podcast.

Love stories are rarely clean, and in “All of You,” the mess is the point. The new drama follows Simon and Laura, lifelong friends played by Brett Goldstein and Imogen Poots, as they drift in and out of each other's lives while a soulmate test promises definitive answers to the question of “the one.” Instead of neat bows and easy catharsis, the film leans into questioning love, heartbreak, longing, and the choices that cut both ways. It arrives on Apple TV+ on September 26 as a romance that challenges more than it comforts, leaving audiences to wrestle with what they believe about love itself.Goldstein, best known for his Emmy-winning turn as Roy Kent on “Ted Lasso,” makes a deliberate rejection of formula here with a deliberate rejection of formula. By refusing to turn the story's love triangle into a moral shortcut, he forces every character to stand on equal ground. Laura's husband isn't a villain but a caring, funny, and decent man, which makes the decision at the film's core sting much more. Time jumps and fragmented glimpses of Simon and Laura together invite the audience to fill in the missing years with their own experience, blurring the line between fiction and memory.READ MORE: ‘All Of You' Review: Brett Goldstein & Imogen Poots Heat Up Decade-Spanning Sci-Fi Romance [TIFF]In this episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo sits down with Goldstein to discuss building a romance that resists tidy resolution, cutting dialogue in favor of subtext, and finding an improvised final line that changes the ending. Nathan and Ryan step into the eerie world of Vivarium (2019), a surreal sci-fi horror film where a young couple (Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg) become trapped in a nightmarish suburban housing development. With its unsettling atmosphere, bizarre child-rearing twist, and heavy-handed social commentary, the movie mixes Twilight Zone-style weirdness with modern anxieties about conformity and domestic life. The hosts debate whether Vivarium is a chilling hidden gem or an overlong metaphor that loses its bite.

Send us a textKatie and Bridget refuse to get on the train to the quarantined zombie land as they re-watch the 2nd installment in the series: 28 Weeks Later! We're back in London where apparently all the zombies have starved out and now the AMERICAN ARMY has come in to take over because that JUST. MAKES. SENSE!(?!) But unfortunately our beloved characters from the 1st movie are nowhere to be seen. Instead we've got siblings Andy and Tammy who are being reunited with their Dad, who shall be known as "Fucking-Don". When they find their Mom alive and well after their Dad gaslighted them into thinking he didn't leave her for dead, chaos ensues and yet another god damn zombie apocalypse commences. Although this time we at least have Jeremy Renner and Idris Elba to look at throughout it, so that's cool. We've got loads of questions, unlikeable/unknown characters, and little to no fun ethical conversations in this sequel to 28 Days Later, which doesn't really compare in the slightest. Released in 2007, it stars Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne, Robert Carlyle, Harold Perrineau, Catherine McCormack, Idris Elba, Imogen Poots, and Mackintosh Muggleton.

Send us a textThis week, on our 108th episode of Fabulous Film & Friends we're looking at Danny Boyle's 2025 summer entry 28 Years Later as well as the two other films that led up to it, 2002's 28 Days Later and 2007's 28 Weeks Later. Mr. Boyle directed the segments one and three, and the second entry was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, The stars of the first movie were Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Brendan Gleason, Megan Burns and Christopher Eccelson. The second movie was a regular who's who of up-and-comers from 2007: Jeremy Renner, Rose Byrne, Imogen Poots, Idris Elba, Harold Perrineau with veteran support from Catherine McCormack and Robert Carlysle while the 3rd film is a mix of old pro and newcomers with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O'Connell and Ralph Fiennes as supporting players to fresh faced star of the tomorrow Alfie Williams! My solitary guest this week is the mighty Joe Field, author, teacher and pop culture enthusiast. The 28 Days Later trilogy's story unfolds as follows:Zombies Zombies and more Zombies! The first movie tracks the origin of a primate based virus and how it decimates England and turns its population into cannibalistic raging savages within 28 Days. Only a lone bike messenger freshly awakened from a coma and a few other scrappy survivors are able to navigate the treacherous countryside to supposed safety of a military outpost. The underachieving sequel is basically the military versus zombies where the virus has been eradicated due to the infected starving to death, but the virus returns with a vengeance when an asymptomatic mother releases it on her cowardly husband who left her to die during the first outbreak. And the third movie, taking place 28 Years after that, deals with a post-apocalyptic human society living on a small island in Scotland. The islanders are cut off from the rest of the world and surrounded by lands chock o'block full of zombies, including 7 foot tall Alpha Zombies. The people on the island have their own training, customs and way of life. When an island mother comes down with cancer, her 12 year old son takes her out into forbidden land in search of a doctor who can cure her. Are any of these movies in this trilogy worth traversing the outer regions to see in the multiplex? Find out!Watch the video podcast on Youtube:https://youtu.be/m2HhutgFhx4

If there's anything you're bound to enjoy, it's a good fight movie! This doesn't have "FIGHT" in the title, but adopts the more measured and assured term "SELF-DEFENSE". Fighting shouldn't be encouraged or promoted, but looking after yourself should, respectfully. That brings us to Riley Stearns' 2019 black comedy THE ART OF SELF-DEFENSE, which follows a "weak" man who gets beaten up, decides to learn to fight, and discovers his inner manliness. As dystopian as this world is presented, I do appreciate the idea of just being able to buy something that is generically named "DOG FOOD" to eliminate the time wasted in having to think about my choices. Before I bore you with how complicated my life is buying dog food, enjoy this film review.

This time on General Witchfinders, we're heading back into the blood-soaked, Rage-infected streets of post-apocalyptic Britain with 28 Weeks Later — the 2007 zombie horror sequel to Danny Boyle's groundbreaking 28 Days Later. Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, 28 Weeks Later builds on the legacy of 28 Days Later (which we covered in episode 43), expanding the world of the Rage Virus and the aftermath of a collapsed society. While Danny Boyle didn't direct this time around — due to commitments on Sunshine — he stayed on as executive producer and even directed key sequences himself, including the ferocious opening scene. The original creators — Boyle, producer Andrew Macdonald, and screenwriter Alex Garland — initially considered a direct sequel called 29 Days Later, potentially continuing the story of Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris's characters. Instead, they pivoted to a broader, bleaker vision: an infected London under military quarantine, a supposed victory against the virus, and the inevitable resurgence of horror. Set weeks after the events of the first film, 28 Weeks Later follows the failed attempt to repopulate a ‘safe zone' in London, guarded by the US Army. As expected in a British zombie film, things go catastrophically wrong. Filming took place in iconic London locations, including Canary Wharf and 3 Mills Studios. A sequence planned for Wembley Stadium had to be shot in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium instead. The film's viral marketing campaign — quite literally — included a huge biohazard warning projected onto the White Cliffs of Dover. The Rage Virus was back. Opening in 2007, 28 Weeks Later landed in over 2,000 US cinemas and took nearly $10 million on its opening weekend. It didn't match the cultural impact of 28 Days Later, but it cemented the franchise as a landmark of modern British horror — helping shape the next wave of post-apocalyptic zombie cinema.28 Weeks Later features a fresh cast, including Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Idris Elba, and a young Imogen Poots. While none of the original characters return, the film builds on the terrifying groundwork Boyle and Garland laid in 28 Days Later — exploring themes of infection, trust, trauma, and institutional failure. The trilogy-that-never-was stalled with 28 Months Later, which entered development hell. But a proper sequel, 28 Years Later, has finally been greenlit, with Danny Boyle returning to direct and Cillian Murphy on board as producer. The Rage Virus isn't done with us yet. If you're searching for podcasts about 28 Weeks Later, 28 Days Later, 28 Years Later, Danny Boyle, zombie movies, the Rage Virus, post-apocalyptic horror, or modern British horror cinema — you've found the right episode. Expect discussion of British zombie films, Rage-infected lore, military horror, abandoned London, and whether 28 Weeks Later holds up next to its predecessor.

As a low budget, mostly practical, minimally computer effects (dare one say “NoFX”?) horror/suspense movie, Green Room follows a gang of four bouncing souls in the fictional band the Ain't Rights as they tour by van the Pacific Northwest, stealing fuel and perhaps sick of it all when they find themselves less than jake at the end of their bankroll. In desperation, they take on as the replacements a gig at a club full of laces and braces. Unlike the typical band road trip setup where their fan base may begin to lag, wagon might break down, or they become pennywise and pound foolish, the members of the Ain't Rights' world turns upside-down after playing for that crass, bad religion of white supremacy, i.e., those subhumans we call skinheads, when, post-show gathering their gear, the green day of these four adolescents turns rancid upon discovering a murdered young woman in the titular green room. Like World War II's Op Ivy, Ain't Rights' members no doubt scheme and raise a black flag of no surrender to escape the compound, but these youths prove only a minor threat and their plan all fugazi when it encounters the racists' experienced violence. Even when these four self-ascribed “misfits” are helped by a violent femme (played by Imogen Poots, friend the one found murdered), the stooges are outclassed and outsmarted. Soon the joy division occurs, rending the group who has bandmembers played by Anton Yelchin (rest in power), Alia Shawkat, Joe Cole, and Callum Turner come face to face with real murderers and violence, including a skinhead band's strung out lead singer but also a stone-cold bearded Patrick Stewart in charge who has attack dogs sic viciously the youths with a sloppy, realistic violence unlike one sees on the television. The clash is epic as the Ain't Rights soon accept without fear suicidal tendencies to try to get out of the jam. And unlike other movies in the horror genre, these youth of today are lack raging hormones (a.k.a. “ramones”?). Yes, Saulneir's, a.k.a. Jay Dawg's, film lacks onscreen intercourse. But while no sex, pistols and violence galore. And for those sensitive to cussing, little guttermouth language is used. So join us, if not for Halloween, then for Birthday XXI of descendent/offspring Jack and/or Election Day (R.I.P. all the dead Kennedys) for our discussion of this film not part of an AFI list. Also throughout the ep, Ken, Jack, Thomas, and Ryan explore themes of coming of age and of guilt for accepting money/work/recognition in the face fascism, but describing these are harder for yours truly to conceal punk band names here within show notes, except perhaps to say it's one big, repeated love fest for the flick, or, hmm, might one be permitted to say “circle jerks”?THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

The show stars Josh Brolin, Imogen Poots, Lili Taylor, Lewis Pullman, Tom Pelphrey, Will Patton, and more (read our review here). READ MORE: ‘Outer Range' Review: Time Is A River For Josh Brolin In Still Weird, Existentially Compelling Season 2 Joining Bingeworthy to discuss the second season of the metaphysical Western sci-fi drama are two stars of the series, Josh Brolin (“No Country for Old Men,” “Avengers: Endgame”) and Imogen Poots (“Green Room,” “Vivarium”), as well as new showrunner Charles Murray (“Luke Cage,” “Sons of Anarchy”). During the interviews, much was discussed about the showrunner change from creator Brian Watkins to Charles Murray. Some, including Imogen Poots, are close friends with Watkins, which could have potentially created an awkward situation, but it seems like Murray pulled the transition off with a great amount of class. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/support

This week the Boys talk about alternate uses of superglue, Oppenheimer making a bomb in more than one way and Paul tries to get Dan to touch his........................ ear. Green Room" is a 2015 thriller film directed by Jeremy Saulnier, known for its intense and relentless portrayal of a punk rock band's harrowing encounter with a group of neo-Nazi skinheads. The film follows the band, The Ain't Rights, as they reluctantly accept a gig at a remote, rural venue. After witnessing a murder backstage, they find themselves trapped in the 'Green Room', with the violent and ruthless skinheads led by Darcy Banker, played by Patrick Stewart, determined to eliminate all witnesses. What sets "Green Room" apart is its unflinching and visceral portrayal of violence and survival. The tension builds steadily throughout the film, as the band members desperately try to find a way out while facing the relentless aggression of their captors. The movie's gritty and claustrophobic atmosphere, combined with strong performances, particularly from the late Anton Yelchin and Imogen Poots, creates an unsettling and suspenseful experience. "Green Room" is a harrowing exploration of the horrors of extremism and the lengths people will go to when pushed to their limits, making it a standout entry in the horror-thriller genre.
