Ah, "mumblecore". Films, that at the heart of them, focus on mini-budget, dialogue driven independent filmmaking, are, by virtue of their desires, INCREDIBLY respectful of your time. You'll be lucky to get one of these "mumble" films to hit over 90 minutes, so this beautiful 88 minute dive into the "mumblecore-iverse" was the perfect start. NIGHTS & WEEKENDS, the Joe Swanberg and Greta Gerwig (in, effectively, her directorial debut) star, direct and write this film about a relationship over the span of its life with a year gap in-between. This is independent cinema, first and foremost, for the 2000s, a direct development of the same principals since indies conception in the 1960's. We make some valid points with what is a great, polished introduction into the "mumblecore" sub-genre, and it's an area (and director) we'll be uncovering again in the future, even if some of us don't like the term "mumblecore".Also, we're joined once again by our friend, and resident Greta Gerwig enthusiast, Josh Martin!

Why You Don't Need a Screenplay to Make an Amazing FilmAs indie filmmakers we throw a lot of obstacles on our own path to creating a feature or short film. No obstacle is larger then the almighty screenplay. How many screenwriters and filmmakers do you know that have been working on the movie script for 3, 5, or 7 years? They keep chipping at it in hopes of cracking that nut or it gives them an excuse for not actually making a feature film.I was no different. One of the biggest things that slowed, if not stopped my filmmaking journey was "the screenplay." I decided to see if there was a different way to approach making a movie with my first feature film This is Meg.In doing my research I came to realize that in the last few years, some of my favorite films happen to be (almost) entirely improvised. No structured screenplay. Some were huge tent pole studio movies, Oscar winners (Ironically for best screenplay) and small indie films. It certainly seemed to be a more prolific style among independent filmmakers and I find that it can mean success when they cast the right actors. Especially in the "Mumblecore" and "Dogma 95" indie film movements.Iron Man had no screenplay? My favorite "lack of screenplay" story was the Marvel Studios tent-pole Iron Man. You heard me correctly. The film that launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe and that show the word what a great leading Robert Downey Jr could be. It remains one of the most enjoyable adaptations of a Marvel comic book to date.via Marvel StudiosTake a listen to what Jeff Bridges revealed in a recent interview."They had no script, man! They had an outline. We would show up for big scenes every day and we wouldn't know what we were going to say. We would have to go into our trailer and work on this scene and call up writers on the phone, 'You got any ideas?' Meanwhile the crew is tapping their foot on the stage waiting for us to come on."Although a story and structure was firmly in place, the dialogue wasn't - leading to much improvisation on set, which accounts for the film's energetic, sparky atmosphere."I said, ‘Oh, what we're doing here, we're making a $200 million student film. We're all just fuckin' around! We're playin'. Oh, great!. That took all the pressure off. Oh, just jam, man, just play. And it turned out great!" Bridges recalled. Here is a list of film I mention and discuss in detail in the podcast:John Cassavetes - ShadowsMike Leigh - Vera DrakeDavid O. Russell - American HustleLynn Shelton - Your Sister's SisterJon Favreau - Iron ManDerek Cianfrance -

After Noirvember, we decided to lighten things up a bit with this week's theme:  cancer comedies. In "Other People" (2016)  Jesse Plemons  kills it as a man who returns home to be with his dying mother. The film is worth a look because it has just the right mix of comedy and sadness. "Paddleton" (2019") is the story about two odd friends and how they cope after one of them becomes terminally ill. Ray Romano steals the show with his performance as a man who has to help his only friend to die. Both of these films are better than they should be.Next up, we celebrate our 100th show with the biggest movies the other guy hasn't seen. His most recent film is Scenes From an Empty Church, starring Kevin Corrigan and Thomas Jay Ryan, Max Casella, and Paul Reiser.  What you will learn: The hustle required to be an indie filmmaker, and the uncertainty that comes with the job, even with numerous successful projects under his belt. How he is able to incorporate taboo or controversial themes in his films and still find funding. Why he prefers New York over L.A., despite potentially missing out on career and film opportunities in L.A.. [0:00-15:21] What it was like growing up in North Carolina as the son of Turkish immigrants, making movies with friends and eventually creating his first independent film, House of Pancakes, at age 24. The faith he had in his 2001 film Ding-a-ling-Less, and the harsh lessons learned about the film world when it was shelved. Onur discusses his eclectic filmography and the challenge of finding audiences for all of his work. [15:21-28:49] Talking shop, Onur reveals his camera preferences and style of filming. What it was like to film Scenes From an Empty Church with quarantine restrictions, what inspired him to make a pandemic-centered movie in the middle of pandemic, and why the film was a conscious shift from his previous style of work. [28:49-48:07] Onur reveals plans for his next film project, an absurdist horror/comedy, and touches on the deeper aspects of why he is compelled to express himself creatively. How he is able to be so prolific creatively in times of darkness, when other creatives tend to shut down and experience writer's block. On our series 5 finale, we're doing a double shot of Jennifer Jason Leigh and Phoebe Cates, with Amy Heckerling's 1982 comedy debut, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, written by Cameron Crowe, and 2001's Mumblecore template drama, The Anniversary Party, written and directed by Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Alan Cumming. These two films are spiritual sequels, linked by JJL and Cates' twenty year friendship. Fast Times is also Amy's favorite movie of all time! Both of these films find a perfect balance between the realistic struggles of women in these respective places in their lives, and belly-laugh comedy. Plus hella abortions. Two movies means we double your pleasure on Meaningful Passages and Lunchtime Polls! Paid in Puke is taking a break but we'll return soon with Series 6!

We are discussing social realism and comparing it to Mumblecore, exchange horrible hotel / asylum seeker home stories, compare knowledge on Poland, talk about history, the 70's, progressive labor movements, authoritarian „socialist“ states, strikes, women's movements, the strike in Lodz, Turkish cinema - It's a wild and informative episode that you truly shouldn't miss out on! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lars-henriks/message
