Lisa Flanagan performs this group story of a faculty at one public high school as if she were herself an entire acting company. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Michele Cobb discuss this engaging adult debut from a YA author. At the beginning of the story's school year a superannuated substitute teacher dies ingloriously on a couch in the eponymous lounge. That episode and each one following introduces more linked characters, events, complications, and unintended consequences, sometimes funny, sometimes sweet, occasionally shocking, but all absorbing and believable. Flanagan's skill and control with her narration are a quiet marvel. Read our review of the audiobook at our website. Published by Penguin Audio. On Tuesday's show: We're expecting rain the rest of the week, with some potentially significant downpours and flash flooding possible. But Houston Chronicle meteorologist Justin Ballard is characterizing the forecast as “tricky.” He joins us to explain. Also this hour: Layoffs, restructuring, and the state takeover of HISD may all be leading to a brain drain of experienced educators. Will Houston's schools face a big teacher shortage come fall? Then, writer Jennifer Mathieu talks about her latest novel, Faculty Lounge. The story shows a "different side of school life" through a chain of events that begins when an elderly substitute teacher is found dead in the faculty lounge of a high school. Mathieu, who's a Houston-area teacher, wrote the 2017 novel, Moxie, which was turned into a Netflix movie in 2021.And we continue our summer series visiting area museums and attractions with a visit to the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum.
I am deeply privileged and honored to have one of my favorite authors on the podcast today: Jennifer Mathieu. More than likely you know her from her 4th book that she published which Amy Poehler adapted to a fantastic Netflix film, Moxie. There is a lot of fun educator talk in here as both me and Jennifer are educators and so we talk about all of the inside baseball on the new novel. Of course we also discuss our love for punk music. Professor Philipp Stelzel. He is currently an associate professor of history at Duquesne University. It was out of boredom during the pandemic that Professor Stelzel began posting cleverly-titled recipes for cocktails on Twitter. His feed quickly gained popularity and it wasn't long until he was offered a book deal, which became The Faculty Lounge: A Cocktail Guide for Academics. If you've seen the popular show “Lucky Hank” where the Dean of the university English department deals out dry wit with a heavy dose of alcohol, just to get through the school year (and life's issues), you will totally drink in the tongue-in-cheek humor of Professor Stelzel's new book. While the book is a satirical take on academia, anyone can enjoy his wit and love of a good cocktail! He can share with your listeners any of his academic-themed drinks recipes,

How would Galileo and his work be received today? Most people think they know what happened to Galileo but often get the details mixed up. Yet even when the details are clear, how does Galileo's life, work, and controversy still shape the culture of the university and the form of liberal learning? (Hint: Is there a secret cold war between the “trivium-ists” and the “quadrivium-ists.” And how would discoveries comparable to Galileo's be received today? In this conversation we take up the Galileo affair, seek to clarify its details, and discuss its reverberations through the contemporary academy. Lindsay, Nayda, and Maari share their experiences navigating the challenges of being a parent while working in the hospitality industry. This hilarious and vulnerable conversation illuminates the importance of community support, taking time off, and having a laugh when times get tough.HRN On Tour is powered by Simplecast.
In this episode, Steven Lubet, Edna B. and Ednyfed H. Williams Memorial Professor of Law and Director of the Fred Bartlit Center for Trial Advocacy at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, discusses his book "Interrogating Ethnography: Why Evidence Matters," which is published by Oxford University Press. Lubet begins by describing ethnography and ethnographic research practices. He explains why he became concerned about the factual accuracy of some of the claims made by ethnographers, and how ethnographic research practices contributed to his concerns. He describes how he investigated claims made in a range of different ethnographic works, and uses evidentiary practices from litigation as a metaphor for how ethnographers could more effectively evaluate the factual accuracy of the evidence they gather. He points to several simple practices, like fact-checking witness accounts, that would increase accuracy. He closes by reflecting on the reception of his book by ethnographers. Lubet blogs at The Faculty Lounge and his scholarship is available on SSRN.This episode was hosted by Brian L. Frye, Associate Professor of Law at the University of Kentucky College of Law. Frye is on Twitter at @brianlfrye. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It's an end-of-the-year blowout in the Faculty Lounge, as Professors Richard Epstein and John Yoo are tackling 2018's madcap final month. Why is the Supreme Court's immigration ruling not as dramatic as it sounds? Is President Trump in genuine legal trouble this time? Is there a silver lining to the departure of Jim Mattis? Why isn't being tried for the same crime by your state and the feds double jeopardy? And what does the Bill of Rights have to do with nunchucks? All that plus Epstein delivers some dreidel game theory, Yoo weighs in on eggnog, and a certain someone engages in a year end Roman law improv game.Sponsored by DonorsTrustJoin the conversation and comment on this podcast episode: https://ricochet.com/podcast/law-talk/the-right-to-bear-nunchucks/.Podcast listeners: Now become a Ricochet member for only $2.50 a month! It's a pre-Thanksgiving session in the faculty lounge, and Professors Richard Epstein and John Yoo have prepared a feast of legal analysis. On the menu: Can the military really overrule President Trump in the event of a nuclear strike? Will the Supreme Court force crisis pregnancy centers to promote abortion? Is a new plan to expand the federal judiciary just GOP court-packing? And is Donald Trump violating the constitution by blocking people on Twitter? All that plus Epstein on the economics of Thanksgiving, Yoo on the McRib app (it's a thing), and, yes, a little bit of Roman law as our holiday gift to you.Sponsored by Casper, RXBARJoin the conversation and comment on this podcast episode: https://ricochet.com/podcast/law-talk/no-fighting-faculty-lounge/.Podcast listeners: Now become a Ricochet member for only $2.50 a month! Psst, do you want to buy a kidney? How about a human egg, or a baby? We talk about taboo markets and tragic choice with Kim Krawiec. Topics range from egg “donation” to kidney transplants, altruism, reference transactions, military service, sex, and more. How do we allocate scarce goods when enough of us just don’t believe the goods should be traded like loaves of bread? It’s Reefer Madness week on Oral Argument. We talk with Douglas Berman about marijuana decriminalization and lots more. We discuss blogs and scholarship, LSD, why minds might be changing and how they change on drug use, parental paternalism and state paternalism, what we mean by “good drugs” and “bad drugs,” the productivity of intoxication, why law students take an interest in philosophy and sociology when it comes to drug laws. What levers should we use to minimize the dangers drugs pose, and what levers are available to us? We talk a bit about Portugal, the Netherlands, Sweden, and North Korea. Yes, North Korea. Is part of the right answer to restrict the market to Mom and Pop Pot? How do we do that in a maelstrom of conflicting federal and state laws? The collective message that young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader. While women have made great strides in leadership over the past few decades, the United States is still 90th in the world for women in national legislatures, women hold only 3% of clout positions in mainstream media, and 65% of women and girls have disordered eating behaviors," according to information in the new film, Miss Representation. Clips from the film will be show as part of the discussion. Special Note: Please join us on Tuesday, February 21 at 2:00PM in the Faculty Lounge for a full screening of the film.
