Since her death, Sylvia Plath (1932–1963) has become an endless source of fascination for a wide audience ranging from readers of The Bell Jar, her semiautobiographical novel, to her groundbreaking poetry as exemplified by Ariel. Beyond her writing, however, interest in Plath has also been fueled in part by the tragic nature of her death. As a result, a steady stream of biographies of Plath have appeared over the last fifty-five years that mainly focus on her death or contain projections of an array of points of view about the writer. Until now, little sustained attention has been paid to the influences on Plath's life and work. What movies did she watch? Which books did she read? How did media shape her worldview? In this meticulously researched biography The Making of Sylvia Plath (UP Mississippi, 2024), Carl Rollyson explores the intricate web of literature, cinema, spirituality, psychology, and popular culture that profoundly influenced Plath's life and writing. At the heart of this biography is a compelling exploration of William Sheldon's seminal work, Psychology and the Promethean Will, which Plath devoured in her quest for self-discovery and understanding. Through Plath's intense study of this work, readers gain unprecedented access to Plath's innermost thoughts, her therapeutic treatments, and the overarching worldview that fueled her creative genius.Through Sheldon as well as Plath's other influences, Rollyson offers a captivating survey of the symbiotic relationship between an artist and the world around her and offers readers new insights into the enigmatic mind of one of the most important writers of the twentieth century.

Acclaimed debut novelist Penny Zang spoke with us about making friendship bracelets for readers, why the world doesn't stop when you lose a loved one, hanging out with Sylvia Plath, and her psychological thriller DOLL PARTS I am joined by a co-host this week, none other than The Book Babe, Milena Gonzalez. It's eerie and addictive, a story that pulls you in and won't let go," and Library Journal wrote, “Zang's compelling debut delves insightfully into topics such as friendship, grief, and Plath's place in literature...” Penny Zang holds an MFA in Creative Writing from West Virginia University and is the 2024 Elizabeth Boatwright Coker fiction fellow via the South Carolina Academy of Authors. Olivia Plath joins to talk about leaving Welcome to Plathville and leaving behind the fundamentalist Christian community in which she was raised. She shares what it's like to leave a marriage that began on television when she was very young, why as a teen she felt she needed a gun to protect against a Hillary Clinton victory, and why she decided to talk more about the anger and abusive aspects of her relationship that did not end up on TLC. Olivia has been on a journey, much of it for the world to see, and it's given her a fascinating perspective on reality TV, on what happens to kids when their parents seek fame, and what it's been like to grow up in one world and then choose to live in another. In this special limited series, Lovett sits down with reality icons who helped lead a hostile takeover not just of television, but of our culture. In intimate and revealing conversations, Lovett and his guests explore the ways these shows blur the line between authenticity and performance, the compromises of putting your life on television, the reality-TV-ification of our politics, and the secrets that don't make it on screen. What have reality stars learned about themselves, about television, and about America? And what happens to a society when the only thing worse than being hated is being boring? These are the questions we are trying to answer - either here, or at the reunion. For a closed-captioned version of this episode, click here.

We finally made it to the wedding episode and there's a lot to unpack EVEN BEFORE the (bop bop lol). But Veronica.... girl, how do you make the Plath's look good. That's my biggest problem. She came on to I guess "Destroy The Plaths" which they don't need help doing, but in essence, you aren't doing anyone a favor, ESPECIALLY yourself because you start rumors, contradict yourself, play the victim, but most importantly cower behind the cows and horses because you're afraid to face the consequences of your words and actions... hmmm.. that sounds familiar.. sounds like a PLATH!What are your thoughts on this episode and the season so far? Happy for Lydia and Zac, but between the family drama with them and Veronica's drama with herself, it's all a hot mess. Use PROMO CODE: "PODCAST" to get 50% off your first month on my Patreon
In this episode of Biographers in Conversation, multi-award-winning biographer Dr Heather Clark chats with Dr Gabriella Kelly-Davies about her choices while crafting Red Comet: The Short Life and Blazing Art of Sylvia Plath. Here's what you'll discover in this episode: Why Heather Clark intentionally shifts the narrative away from Sylvia Plath's tragic death to celebrate her vibrant life and literary achievements. Why Heather emphasises Sylvia Plath's ambition, joy and creative courage as a young woman navigating the mid-20th-century's literary culture. The challenge of navigating an avalanche of archival material to find the narrative thread in Plath's life. How Heather balanced rigorous scholarship with the art of storytelling, giving Red Comet the propulsive narrative energy of a novel despite its scholarly depth. How Heather portrayed Plath's inner life with empathy and honesty. How Heather focuses on Plath's literary significance, repositioning her among the most important writers of the 20th century. How by challenging one-dimensional stereotypes, Red Comet invites a new appreciation of Plath's genius and legacy beyond the shadow of her death.
It's the day before Lydia's wedding, and tensions are high between the Plath Boys, Veronica and Zac. Ethan does 100 push-ups to prove to us how macho he is and peels off in his old man car, Veronica refuses to act like an adult, and Isaac is super mad at everyone, but especially Zac. Sylvia Plath is legendary for being a tragic poet mostly known for her novel, The Bell Jar. John and Rachael are fans of Plath's poetry and The Bell Jar, but hereby set out on a historical project to read Plath's work as the world would have known it first, and as she would have known it herself, without the legend imposing its darkest meanings onto every possible opportunity.

Plath, Lorca, Whitman, OH MY! And now..the Dunbar sisters. Yes, indeed, 'tis POEM week and this is the poem prompt for the poem episode. We're back from summer break and diving into the deep end with this week's Prompt: Poem. Who didn't love the poetry portion of your beloved Literature classes? Who among us doesn't long for those days of iambic pentameter, sonnets and haikus? Well, we didn't do any of that for this episode, but we DID write some songs. You can take up the poetic torch and get more into the genre as you so choose. Write on, dear listeners!
It's the day of sweet Lydia's (potentially staged) proposal and Ethan can't help but ruin it with his incredibly rude and childish behavior. Veronica eggs him on and Micah joins in on the bullying, meanwhile, Zac is just trying to pull this moment off for Lydia in front of all her friends and family. What a sh*t show! In this episode of TSFS, I recap the explosive season seven premiere of "Welcome to Plathville," where we see the Plath family like never before, reflecting on how much they've changed over the past seven years. I discuss the shocking fight between Micah and Isaac that left Micah with a severely injured nose, Lydia's whirlwind engagement to Zach after just 16 days of dating, and the ongoing tensions within the family, particularly between Veronica and Mariah. I also touch on Ethan's controversial comments about Zach's sexuality and Olivia's call for TLC to let her out of her contract, hinting at the behind-the-scenes drama that could impact the show's future. He got the name Rabble cause it was founded by three Evan's, which didn't work - so he went with his online nickname. He has a cool track record of working not only on Twitter, but Flickr, Palm, and other big names. He lives in New Zealand, enjoying all the outdoor activities, and participates in activism in digital rights and environmentalism. Being a Vegetarian, he admits that his comfort food is Mexican cuisine, which he doesn't get a lot of in the land of the Kiwis.Rabble was disappointed when Twitter shut down its open app capabilities. He wanted something like Twitter, but built to where someone couldn't take away his access. He started to dig into protocols, and eventually landed in San Francisco to tell his friends that he was going to make social media work like email and messaging. This is the creation story of Rabble Labs & Verse.SponsorsPaddle.comSema SoftwarePropelAuthPostmanMeilisearchMailtrap.TECH Domains (https://get.tech/codestory)Linkshttps://www.verse-pbc.org/https://www.linkedin.com/in/rabble/Our Sponsors:* Check out Vanta: https://vanta.com/CODESTORYSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/code-story/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Today, I dive into the latest drama surrounding Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively, particularly the recent dismissal of Baldoni's $400 million counter-lawsuit against Lively, which has left many of his fans concerned. I also discuss Ryan Reynolds' comments that seem to take a jab at Baldoni while asserting his own integrity. Shifting gears, I cover TLC news, including the Pauly family's house for sale in Oregon and the ongoing speculation about their future on the show, as well as updates on the Plath family's home in Georgia, which hasn't sold yet. On a personal note, I share my own fertility journey following an egg donor transfer and my anxieties about potential pregnancy. Finally, I touch on the Diddy trial, where the prosecution has dropped several charges, raising questions about the case's future. Stay tuned for more updates and insights! In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with Kay Sohini about her graphic memoir, This Beautiful, Ridiculous City: A Graphic Memoir (published by Ten Speed Graphic, 2025). A vibrant graphic memoir of a woman—an immigrant, a survivor, a writer, a foodie, and, ultimately, an optimist—who rebuilds her life in New York City while recovering from the trauma of an abusive relationship. “An intimate portrait of the city not only as a place of dreams, but as a vital source for healing and self-discovery.”—Nick Sousanis, Eisner Award–winning author of Unflattening On her first night in New York City, Kay Sohini sits on the tarmac of JFK Airport making an inventory of everything she's left behind in India: her family, friends, home, and gaslighting ex-boyfriend. In the wake of that untethering she realizes two things: she's finally made it to the city of her literary heroes—Kerouac, Plath, Bechdel—and the trauma she's endured has created gaping holes in her memory. As Kay begins the work of piecing herself back together she discovers the deep sense of belonging that can only be found on the streets of New York City. In the process she falls beautifully, ridiculously in love with the bustling landscape, and realizes that the places we love do not always love us back but can still somehow save us in weird, unexpected ways. At once heartbreaking and uplifting, This Beautiful, Ridiculous City explores the relationship between trauma and truth, displacement and belonging, and what it means to forge a life of one's own. About Kay Sohini: Kay Sohini is a South Asian researcher, writer, and graphic novelist based in New York. She holds a PhD in English from Stony Brook University and her essays and comics have been featured in The Washington Post, The Nib, and more. Her work focuses on utilizing comics in the scholarly examination of healthcare justice, environmental humanities, resisting disinformation, and creating an equitable future for all. This Beautiful, Ridiculous City is her first book. Learn more about your ad choices.
