Send us a textThis week, Ross and Simon are joined by the beautifully unfiltered Mike Batho from The Reclining Pair Podcast to wrestle with a hypothetical that could ruin friendships, family dinners, and job interviews alike. The choice is simple: Total Silence or Total Transparency. No filters. No secrets. Just raw, unedited brain nonsense 24/7.Or total silence forever—where your only way to say “I love you” is blinking in Morse code. Together, the trio navigate uncomfortable truths, horrifyingly fecal overshares, and what happens when your inner monologue becomes your outer one. The Moroccan writer Mohamed Choukri grew up poor and illiterate on the streets of Tangier in the waning years of colonialism. He told the story of his childhood in his autobiographical novel For Bread Alone – El Khubz El Hafi in Arabic, Le Pain Nu in French. Choukri went on to write much more, chronicling life in post-independence Morocco during the “years of lead,” and the marginalized underclass of Tangier: its barflies, prostitutes, petty criminals, day-to-day survivors. We spoke to scholar and translator Jonas El Busty about the unique subversiveness of Choukri's work, and why it still resonates so strongly today. We also talked about the reception of Choukri's work, and the power dynamics embedded in its translation. SHOW NOTESJonas El Busty is a professor of Arabic at Yale University. He has translated Choukri's short story collection Tales of Tangier, as well as the third installment of Choukri's autobiography, Faces, and is the editor, alongside Roger Allen, of the scholarly anthology Reading Mohamed Choukri's Narratives: Hunger in Eden. For Bread Alone was translated by Paul Bowles, in a process that remains contentious to this day. Choukri's writing about some of the famous Western writers – Jean Genet, Tennessee Williams, Paul Bowles – who visited or lived in Tangiers is collected in In Tangier Ursula recently wrote an article in the New York Review of Books on Choukri, Tangier, colonialism and nostalgia. Having It ALL: Conversations about living an Abundant Loving Life
There can be a tremendous amount of fear and anxiety associated with honesty, despite the freeing impact that complete honesty can have on ourselves and in our relationships. This episode was inspired by an article I read titled "The Pros And Cons Of Brutal Honesty". The following quote from the article sets up this episode perfectly: "People that stop growing are individuals who decide they can no longer handle brutal honesty." I believe part of what it means to love someone unconditionally - yourself included - is being honest with them. Honest with how they are showing up, your feelings towards them, how you experience them, what you'd like to experience with them, what you see for them, the impact they have on your life. This show is about rewriting beliefs, moving through fears, discovering your truth, and viewing life through a lens of abundance and love -- and getting there, for most of us, takes growth. What you'll hear in this episode: The common consequences, both welcomed and not, of being brutally honest My experience with being deceptive and opaque in relationships A great free tool to help you practice honesty with yourself STRUGGLING WITH CONSISTENCY? We make every attempt to leave it all on the court when we're recording. Tonight was no exception and some of what, while tongue and cheek, was excweptionally brutal. It didn't matter the subject, we were upfront and blunt. The JFK files were released this week, AI Copywrite was overturned by US Appeals Court, Tim Walz, Bernie, and AOC start running for President, and the Tesla Takedown is still in effect. New Episode Alert! We're back with another chaotic ride through the week's biggest stories—plus a few unhinged tangents (as always). Ryan kicks things off with a joke that's either genius or criminally bad. Joyhdae barely survives. But then, she introduces a new segment, Food for Thought, where she drops some bizarre (and slightly disturbing) facts that will have you questioning everything. Plastic Surgery & Brutal Honesty? A husband tells his wife the truth about her post-surgery look, and the internet is divided. Would you want honesty or silence? Iman Shumpert Can't Let Go? Teyana Taylor's rumored new relationship has her ex in his feelings. Meanwhile, Ryan puts Joyhdae on the spot about her own love life. Will she finally take dating seriously in 2025, or is her “mystery husband” still lost in the universe? Jay-Z vs. A Lawyer Who Might Regret Everything Hov is taking legal action, and things are getting messy. But does his swift response help his case—or just add fuel to the fire? Fyre Festival 2… But Make It Even More Fraudulent Billy McFarland is back at it, selling tickets to a festival that doesn't even have land to stand on. Who's actually buying into this?! Mind-Bending Debates & Unpopular Opinions Ryan brings a deep question that will have you rethinking reality itself, while Joyhdae's take on a moral dilemma might surprise you. And, of course, we end with some top-tier ridiculousness—featuring a dad joke that might get Ryan canceled and an AITA scenario that has us questioning everything about relationships. We want to hear from you! In this episode, we break down the Pro Lash vs. Lashify drama, how Bethenny's brutally honest review on TikTok ignited a firestorm, and why beauty brands are scrambling to defend their products. We'll dive into lash industry rivalries, influencer impact on brand success (and failure), and what happens when a viral TikTok review shakes up an entire market. From beauty brand lawsuits to intellectual property battles, and the power of Bethenny Frankel's unfiltered voice, this is the deep dive you need to understand the lash war that's taking over your For You Page.
