Link to slide deck: https://bit.ly/45C8m63   - Today we look at the strong resurgence in US equities yesterday, particularly in the most popular speculative names like Tesla and Nvidia, which jumped over 8% yesterday, trading close to the cycle highs just ahead of its earnings report after the close tomorrow. The strong resurgence unfolded despite US yields rising sharply, with the 10- and 30-year yields posting new 15-year and 12-year highs, respectively. We look at key upcoming Treasury auctions and what the Fed's Jackson Hole conference on Friday and into the weekend may be set to deliver in terms of policy hints. This and more in today's pod, which features Peter Garnry on equities, Althea Spinozzi on fixed income and John J. Hardy hosting and on FX. US equities were mostly higher in Monday trading, ending a bit off best levels. It was a quiet session with nothing incremental in terms of market narrative. The Fed's Jackson Hole symposium is on tap for Friday with more discussion in the press over the weekend about the upside risk surrounding the neutral rate due to higher productivity and increased deficits.

We also wrap up last week's rather dire action in the US and other equity markets as rising yields continue to pressure valuations. The week ahead features the biggest AI name of them all as Nvidia reports on Wednesday after the market close. On the macro data front we'll have a look at preliminary August PMI's incoming on Wednesday, while the bigger focus rolls into view with the Fed's Jackson Hole symposium up on Friday and into the weekend. US equities finished lower in Thursday trading, ending near worst levels, with the Dow, S&P, and Nasdaq ending down 0.84%, 0.78%, and 1.17%, respectively. Big tech was largely lower. PBM names and drug distributors were the big laggards. Airlines, homebuilders, restaurants, and leisure names underperformed as well. Networking, search, credit cards, pharma, defense, fertilizers, commodity chemicals, and China tech beat the tape, though energy fared best amid a crude rebound. Despite some early strength, there was no real change to the market narrative. Looking ahead, there is nothing on the economic calendar for Friday. Fed's Jackson Hole conference is the macro highlight late next week, though there is a lot of skepticism Powell will offer any explicit near-term policy signals ahead of September's FOMC meeting.

This week we talk food production and try to make sense of a world where obesity and food waste sit alongside food banks, shortages and riots. Today's grain mostly comes from four companies. It's abundant, subsidised and cheaper than the alternative, but it depletes our soil, decimates diversity; and producing food accounts for nearly a quarter of global GHG emissions. Are lab-grown meat and carbs the answer? In Crypto and the Markets this week the Fed's Jackson Hole statement (more rate rises) knocked everything back into red, we ask what really drives inflation and what's the unspoken goal. DoubleLine's Samuel Lau and Jeff Mayberry run down the numbers for the red market week of Aug. 22-26, with stocks in particular falling in the wake of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome H. Powell's short speech Friday from the Fed's Jackson Hole symposium (14:40). The S&P 500 Index was down 4% on the week, with most of that decline coming Friday (2:07). Energy was the best performer while tech was the biggest laggard. In fixed income, the two- and 10-year bond yields finished the week higher, and the long bond rallied a bit after the Powell speech. The Bloomberg US Aggregate Bond Index was down 40 basis points on the week with no green to be seen. Commodities delivered a mixed bag (7:07). Bitcoin was down for the week (9:13) to around $20,000, with Sam and Jeff questioning if its historical round-number bias might presage a 50% climb ($30,000) or fall ($10,000). Over in Macro Land (11:03), data prints included the S&P Global U.S. manufacturing and services PMI numbers at their lowest since 2020, and core PCE has a long way to go before hitting the Fed's inflation target. The negative second estimate of Q2 GDP number marked improvement but seems unlikely to hit zero or go positive in future updates. Powell's speech was the macro event of the week (14:33), and Sam and Jeff dig into the details, including how Powell's pronouncements were consistent with previous statements by other Fed officials but some equity investors reacted as if it were a hawkish surprise. The Topic of the Week will be returning the first episode after Labor Day, and if you have any suggestions, please send them in via minutes@doubleline.com or @dlineminutes.

Craig Hemke, Editor of TF Metals Report joins us to discuss the dichotomy between how the Fed and main stream financial media are presenting the health of the economy, versus the actual macro data we see coming in.  We start off looking at the recent market optimism based on messaging that inflation is coming down and we aren't in a recession due to the recent strong jobs report, but upon peeling back more layers of the economic onion, we point to many other data points suggesting we are in an economic contraction already.   Next we pivot over to how the HFT algos trade down gold based on the so-called strong US dollar, but then point out it is still being eroded by 8.5% inflation, and is only strong in relation to other more troubled fiat currencies being debased even faster. We discuss how gold is near or at highs in most other currencies, and that ultimately it will rise in dollar terms off the back of the inevitable Powell Pivot 2.0.  We wrap up looking forward to the Fed's Jackson Hole symposium next Friday, and other economic data points on the horizon in the weeks and months to come.
