Notes from James: What if I told you that we could eliminate the IRS, get rid of personal income taxes completely, and still keep the government funded? Sounds impossible, right? Well, not only is it possible, but historical precedent shows it has been done before. I know what you're thinking—this sounds insane. But bear with me. The IRS collects $2.5 trillion in personal income taxes each year. But what if we could replace that with a national sales tax that adjusts based on what you buy? Under my plan: Necessities (food, rent, utilities) 5% tax Standard goods (clothes, furniture, tech) 15% tax Luxury goods (yachts, private jets, Rolls Royces) 50% tax And boom—we don't need personal income taxes anymore! You keep 100% of what you make, the economy booms, and the government still gets funded. This episode is a deep dive into how this could work, why it's better than a flat tax, and why no one in government will actually do this (but should). Let me know what you think—and if you agree, share this with a friend (or send it to Trump). Episode Description: What if you never had to pay personal income taxes again? In this mind-bending episode of The James Altucher Show, James tackles a radical idea buzzing from Trump, Elon Musk, and Howard Lutnick: eliminating the IRS. With $2.5 trillion in personal income taxes on the line, is it even possible? James says yes—and he's got a plan. Digging into history, economics, and a little-known concept called “money velocity,” James breaks down how the U.S. thrived in the 1800s without income taxes, relying on tariffs and “vice taxes” on liquor and tobacco. Fast forward to today: the government rakes in $4.9 trillion annually, but spends $6.7 trillion, leaving a gaping deficit. So how do you ditch the IRS without sinking the ship? James unveils his bold solution: a progressive national sales tax—5% on necessities like food, 15% on everyday goods like clothes, and a hefty 50% on luxury items like yachts and Rolls Royces. Seniors and those on Social Security? They'd pay nothing. The result? The government still nets $2.5 trillion, the economy grows by $3.7 trillion thanks to unleashed consumer spending, and you keep more of your hard-earned cash. No audits, no accountants, just taxes at the cash register. From debunking inflation fears to explaining why this could shrink the $36 trillion national debt, James makes a compelling case for a tax revolution. He even teases future episodes on tariffs and why a little debt might not be the enemy. Whether you're a skeptic or ready to tweet this to Trump, this episode will change how you see taxes—and the economy—forever. What You'll Learn: The history of taxes in America—and how the country thrived without an income tax in the 1800s Why the IRS exists and how it raises $2.5 trillion in personal income taxes every year How eliminating income taxes would boost the economy by $3.75 trillion annually My radical solution: a progressive national sales tax—and how it works Why this plan would actually put more money in your pocket Would prices skyrocket? No. Here's why. Newfoundland and Labrador has one of the highest personal income tax rates in all of North America. Conservative-leaning think tank, the Fraser Institute, says those high taxes keep medical professionals from working here. It says if the government wants to improve recruitment and retention in health care, it'll have to consider tax cuts. In this episode, Nate Scott discusses the confusion that happens when you misclassify policy transactions as income statement transactions instead of balance sheet transactions. Nate explains the difference between income statement and balance sheet and how they interact with each other. He provides examples of income sources and expenses and how they affect the net free cash flow. Nate also discusses the movement of money on the balance sheet, including the impact of policy loans and repayments. He ends the episode by emphasizing the importance of understanding the classification of policy transactions and their impact on the overall financial picture. Key Takeaways Misclassifying policy transactions can lead to confusion and misunderstanding of their impact on personal finances. Income statement transactions and balance sheet transactions are different and should be classified correctly. Understanding the movement of money on the balance sheet is crucial for effective financial management. Policy loans and repayments are balance sheet transactions and do not add new expenses to the income statement. Today's Post - https://bahnsen.co/4dd0xsl Economic Front The big economic news last week was the 1.6% annualized real GDP growth for Q1 when +2.5% had been expected. The 3.4% of Q4 (again, all these numbers are annualized, which is just how they get discussed) was not going to repeat itself, but 1.6% vs. 2.5% projected and 2.7% in the Atlanta Fed's GDPNow model was a big step down. The positive side is that manufacturing appears to be picking up, New Orders are on the rise, and low inventories now mean more manufacturing later. Net exports were the biggest drag (-0.9%), and, as is almost always the case, consumption was the largest contributor (+1.7%). Capex contributed just +0.4%. The Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) was up +2.7% year-over-year last month, matching expectations. Personal Income rose +0.5% in March, in line with expectations. 54% of people worked at firms with less than 500 employees in 1980. That number is just over 46% now. The fertility rate in the U.S. dropped to 1.62 last year, the lowest on record. Our fertility rate has been below the 2.1 replacement level for 17 years now. Fed-Speak, PCE Price Index Data & Annualized Returns The Money Wise guys are back in the studio and this week's topics include the PCE Price Index, confusing Fed-speak and so much more. The guys kick things off with a look at last week's numbers from Wall Street. The Dow was up 1.3%, the S&P 500 was up 1.7%, and the NASDAQ was up 1.4%. YTD the Dow is up 3.8%, the S&P is up 6.7%, and the NASDAQ is up 6.6. Well, it was quite a week! The guys discuss the S&P's annualized return - which is surprising yet highly unlikely to remain up this much. The guys ponder how much of the Q1 performance we're seeing now is going to slow down as the year goes on, and they share confusion about this week's contradictory Fed-speak regarding interest rate cuts. What will the timeline really look like? Well, the Money Wise guys think we have many more months before we see cuts. They also discuss expected Personal Consumption Expenditures numbers, also known as the PCE Price Index, which we'll see next week, and which could push rate cuts back by as much as a quarter. Understanding the PCE Price Index The PCE Price Index, which is the common abbreviation for the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index, is expected next week. Why does the PCE Price Index matter? Well, this number is released each month as part of the Personal Income & Outlays report. The PCE Price Index is a measure of the prices that people living in the United States are paying for goods and services, meaning it relates to inflation. To learn more about the PCE Price Index and how it differs from the Consumer Price Index, check out this explanation from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In the second hour today, the Money Wise guys discuss the RIA vs. Broker differences you need to know. You don't want to miss the details! Tune in for the full discussion on your favorite podcast provider or at davidsoncap.com, where you can also learn more about the Money Wise guys or take advantage of a portfolio review and analysis with Davidson Capital Management.
