Data Futurology - Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence From Industry Leaders

This week on the Data Futurology podcast, we have a special guest, Eliud Polanco, to talk about an innovative approach to data management and access. This approach promises to make models and the management of data more reliable and secure. Polanco, who is the president of Fluree, looks to a blockchain-driven future for data, where data blocks sit on the ledger, and the ability to access and modify them is based on a zero trust approach. This unlocks innovation, Polanco says on the podcast, allowing organisations and individuals to take greater control over data, and do so in a more efficient manner. He points to GDPR regulations as a good example of where this approach can help. Currently, GDPR regulations require a lot of paperwork, but it's inefficient and often ignored by both consumers and organisations. However, through a blockchain-based, decentralised approach to data management, a person's right to control their data can be enhanced, but in such a way that the organisation can also manage the data more efficiently and effectively. Polanco also provides an excellent potential use case in the financial services space. Financial services have strict regulatory requirements to monitor for money laundering and other illegal activities. However, that can be difficult to do based on data privacy and other regulations. In the example Polanco gives, it is difficult for a US financial services organisation to monitor transactions with Singapore, because US organisations can't easily get access to Singaporean financial data. However, this decentralised approach opens up the opportunity to have automation query data and return answers without the agent ever needing to see or touch the data. Suddenly it becomes possible to note a transaction without seeing the data of the transaction itself. Enjoy this in-depth and nuanced discussion about one of the more exciting innovations on the data horizon. In our previous episode, the first part of my conversation with Michael Lewellen, we discussed the basics of blockchain and how it could be used to improve the integrity of battlefield networks. In this episode, I put Michael to the test. As he entered the studio for this recording, I handed him a 1.5 page story that was published a few months ago. It announced a second phase AFWERX SBIR award to a startup based in North Carolina named Fluree. Based solely on the limited information in the news article, I asked Michael to speculate on what AFWERX (and the Air Force) might be funding Fluree to develop. Michael had never heard of Fluree nor did he do any research during the show prior to this segment. I did this for two reasons. First, I was interested in what he might posit as within the realm of the possible given his subject matter expertise in blockchain. Second, I wanted to demonstrate - without any coaching or preparation - what can happen if a commercial developer is presented a military use case in terms they can understand. America has many bright and capable commercial innovators. But if the needs of the military aren't explained in ways that are understandable to the commercial sector, few commercial firms will respond to the invitations to innovate for the military. In this week’s episode we explore how can we automate the claims process with blockchain. Our guest for this topic is Bobbie Shrivastav, Co-founder and Chief Product Officer at Benekiva. Bobbie has 15 years experience in the technology field. In 2015, in addition to becoming a parent Bobbie started working on Benekiva after realising all the inefficiencies in the insurance industry.   What is Blockchain? Blockchain is magic? That magic pill that we have all been waiting for? Bobbie describes blockchain as a ledger of transactional records that is permanent and immutable, i.e. it can’t be changed. In addition it is distributed across a permission based or permissionless based blockchain and is append only.   What is Benekiva? Benekiva is a technology platform that is here to bridge the gap between carriers, policy holders and beneficiaries via claims automation, asset retention and data management. Benekiva claims to be the only stand alone claims platform for life and annuity that focuses on the customer.   Challenges of the existing claims process? In 2016, Bobbie heard a stat that 68% of life insurance goes unclaimed in the United States. According to NerdWallet and USA Today, there is $7.4 billion of unclaimed life insurance in the US alone. This staggering number is due to the fact that what is wrong with the existing claims process is that it is still in paper and file mode. For the most part the work flow is passing paper and files. It is a process full of friction that generates many barriers for beneficiaries to successfully receive a payout. Bobbie highlighted the four main problems: Inefficient process Legacy systems As most life insurance policies are filed in paper format it doesn’t enable for a digital kind of communication with the policy holder for updating their details such as their beneficiaries. Unclaimed laws prevent insurance companies to keep the money so they have to engage in costly investigative exercises to find the beneficiaries of the life insurance policy.   How have carriers tackled this problem to date? Up to now most carriers’ strategy for addressing those issues has been through back end admin system upgrades. Whilst there is no issues with updating an insurance company’s core systems, it isn’t an update that has a fundamental impact on claims processes. As it also takes on average 2 – 5 years to do those updates, claims improvements haven’t happened.  Additionally as some carriers look at claims as an expense centre, they don’t always invest sufficiently into it to update them. Benekiva can integrate with insurance companies current systems and also into the updated admin systems once the update is complete. In the meantime Benekiva can start pulling data from legacy systems and provide immediate customer experience improvement. Even if the data is stored in a paper format, Benekiva is able to digitise its content.   Blockchain Benekiva started looking at using blockchain in two use cases within a private blockchain: Immutable ledger – provide an audit trail of the claim process from the moment the policy is generated to when the payout is made “Time travel capability” – enables querying at any point in time instantly Bobbie recognises that this could have been done without blockchain. However, Benekiva understands the importance of being at the cutting edge of technology and to start experimenting with blockchain in order for the future to explore building a consortium. From a customer experience side blockchain can help guarantee integrity and once the consortium model is enabled it will be able to service the beneficiary very efficiently with the potential to significantly reducing this stat of 68% unclaimed life insurance. Benekiva’s blockchain has been developed by Fluree.   What does the future look like? Making the claim process as seamless as possible is Benekiva’s focus for the next few years.

Blockchain technologies are changing the way we think about data archival and storage. For instance, most database systems can only capture the current state of a data set. This means we must rely on secondary backup systems to ensure historical data can remain accessible, a stark contrast from what the most basic of blockchains provide out of the box. Database systems that offer immutability and historical context for data would be greatly beneficial for companies as it would make internal and external audits much less costly and time-intensive. We’re delighted to bring you an interview with Flip Filipowski and Brian Platz. Flip is a veteran entrepreneur whose career spans 50 years, having worked for and founded some of the world’s largest software companies of the 80’s and 90’s. Brian’s background includes having founded A List Appart in 1994, which is among the oldest and most influential web development blogs, and SilkRoad Technologies.
