There is a tendency to think that what we see in the present moment will continue. We forget how often we have been astonished by the sudden crumbling of institutions, by extraordinary changes in people's thoughts, by unexpected eruptions of rebellion against tyrannies, by the quick collapse of systems of power that seemed invincible. What leaps out from the history of the past hundred years is its utter unpredictability. - Howard Zinn Rebecca Solnit's blog + newsletter: https://www.meditationsinanemergency.com/Rebecca Solnit's Books: https://www.rebeccasolnit.net/books.htmlDonate to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund and the Sudan Relief FundRead Julie's Medium Blog.Support JULIE (and the show!)Support + get some bonus stuff over on PATREON.Get an occasional personal email from me: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTune in on INSTAGRAM AND YOUTUBE or TIKTOK.The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. title credit: Alkaline Trio or read today's episode, here. The only thing that has helped me to stop doom scrolling was remembering that worst people in the world want me to doom scroll. We've become inundated and confused and overwhelmed and scared. And that's by design. They're banking on us disconnecting. They've invested a lot in forcing us to tap out. I don't like people telling me what to do and how to think. You're gonna buy in sometimes, but when you realize it? Resist that shit as hard as you can.Action is the remedy to hopelessness. Hope is a verb.Someone once said, if you're scared to lose your life you already have, and that stuck with me.If we want real change in the long term? That requires us to be comfortable changing something now.Things don't change unless I do, and if I'm being honest with myself? What is the most you'd pay for lunch? What about baby formula? What about an uber home when your battery is on 1%? Those numbers will be different depending on your mood, location, and personality. Dynamic Pricing is a way for companies to exploit us out of the most possible money, by creating a personalized "profile" they can use to manipulate you into more profits. This is a form of priming that we all need to pay attention to. Watch: RONAN FARROW ON DYNAMIC PRICING. “The world makes much less sense than you think. How do you naturally prime yourself for your day? Brushing your teeth to feel refreshed, playing hype music to get in a better mood, opening windows to let in fresh air. These are all forms of priming that affect how our mind feels going into things. We associate familiarity with ease. What do we do when people use priming with negative intentions?"Start by cultivating environmental awareness. Look around your workspace, your living room, and your digital feeds. What are they priming you for? Does your phone's home screen, filled with news and social media apps, prime you for distraction and outrage? Does your desk, cluttered with unfinished tasks, prime you for anxiety? You have the power to curate your environment." - madeupmind.org “The world makes much less sense than you think. shame thrives in secrecy. sometimes just recognizing your shame arising is enough to stop it, but when that isn't enough? maybe you need a break. grounding exercises have changed my life. sometimes i really just needed a sandwich or a nap. but when noticing + grounding isn't enough? there's the art of priming. YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ THE FILES. There are plenty of people pulling all nighters with this shit for their actual job, you (likely) don't have to. You can't retroactively stop these crimes by learning about them. Also, this has been one of the biggest assaults on victims privacy in history, the reductions protect the criminals, not the victims. You don't have to fucking read them. If you're going to read them? PROTECT YOUR ENERGY. You can't be an effective person that makes any type of change if you're incapacitated by fear and despair. We talked about “flooding the zone” at the beginning of his presidency, and we're talking about it again today. This is a tactic to overwhelm the masses into inaction. Don't feed the machine. Set boundaries. Set limits. Put on an invisible cloche and protect your energy subconsciously. Respect yourself enough to know when a conversation isn't productive or an article isn't helpful or a feeling isn't permanent. Don't engage with the information, engage with the emotions + what they make you want to do. Rage and grief are normal reactions, but feeding into the things making you feel that way, instead of what the feelings are attempting to communicate, can create a cycle of inaction and frustration. Engage with what the feelings are communicating, not the content making you feel those feelings. Let that push you into some sort of connection or advocacy. Not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it will make you feel better about doing the right thing, and we need more of that energy right about now. (Content warning) The whole point of patriarchy is to dominate. To exert power over the powerless. To brutalize people to the point of submission. Imperialism, colonialism, slavery… These things were never about having enough resources to survive, as the dirty ass settlers and hideous ass enslavers tended to have plenty of means. Hierarchy will always result in someone being on top, and someone being on bottom. The patriarchy has always been about power. And what could offer a more efficient way to exploit others for power than in committing the most heinous, violent, volatile, and truly unbelievable acts on literal children? Nothing. Patriarchy, unchecked and in its purest form, is pedophilic. BUT this is a cultural problem, and cultures can adapt. Many cultures don't have this same hierarchy. There are better options. Sure, this has been a huge issue for generations, which is why I think we should take advantage of the fact that we're finally talking about it and change the fucking culture. The six tenets of humane technology are: Sensitive to Human Nature: Technology should work in harmony with human vulnerabilities and biases, rather than exploiting them to grab attention.Minimize Harmful Consequences: Product teams must account for and minimize the negative, unintended, or downstream consequences of their technology.Center on Values: Technology should be designed to support human values (such as truth, connection, and well-being) rather than simply maximizing for engagement metrics.Create Shared Understanding: Technology should foster trust, truth, and the shared understanding necessary for functioning democracies, rather than creating fragmented realities.Support Fairness & Justice: Systems should promote a more just world by actively reducing bias and integrating the voices of people who experience harm.Help People Thrive: Products should be designed to empower users to act in alignment with their deeper, long-term intentions, rather than exploiting short-term impulses. How do we fight the very system we're stuck in? If every road we end up on bottlenecks to the same hole they want us stuck in, should we even bother? There's a place for all of us in the systemic fight, and it's a matter of filling needs that you can fill, as they arise. Some of us will need to stay in the bottle, but we can keep flooding the neck of the bottle from the inside, and because it's already showing signs of cracking - we should never let up until it does. But some people hate the damned bottle, and will find they are best used outside of the bottle, throwing rocks at the facade to show how fallible it is. Some of us will have escaped the bottle already and be creating new, more connected and expansive roads for when the bottle shatters and we all need a new path, and some of us will be stuck, in the bottom of the bottle, waiting for the glass shards to fall and bury them, or for someone outside to pull them. Find a place for yourself. Building new roads, or breaking the bottle neck that has been causing so much harm. It's impossible to see your own issues when you're in them. If you're stuck in the abusive system you're not likely to see how abusive it is until you've escaped it.You have to back up to see the whole picture. Your nose is on the wall, back up a few steps and you'll see how big and broken the wall is. When we see how other systems are working, it becomes clear all the ways ours isn't. Knowing is half the battle, but what about the other half? We'll never be free of all bias, perception, and susceptibility to manipulation. It feels like we should be able to control what we understand, but unfortunately that's not the case. I've been using the term "machiavellian" for years. Recently, I looked it up. Today, I'm sharing what I found. Machiavelli was a teacher of "evil". He believed virtues were a waste of time. He said successful founders and supporters of government must be violent murderers to sustain control. Fear is a more powerful motivator than fear, so he encouraged brute force and violence as a means to an end. We can combat this type of thinking by encouraging empathy, connection, and morality. This isn't about disagreeing about policies or politics, anymore. We currently live in a world with a sizable minority of people are disagreeing about reality itself. We cannot allow those who disagree with reality to create a new one. What do we do when we're forced to tolerate people who support authoritarianism? How does a pluralistic democracy deal with people who threaten the existence of such a thing? We must set firm and clear boundaries against actions + movements that threaten the pluralistic democracy that keeps them safe, provide a viable off-ramp from authoritarianism and intolerance, and teach explicitly a "tolerance for ambiguity and difference". My family has never been one to talk about death, we pretend it doesn't exist until it blindsides us and ruins our lives. But building this wall around the inevitable has created a feeling of deep fear around the entire subject. So, as I get older, and I am forced to face this reality more and more, I am beginning to realize that it's never been about my fear of "mortality" in and of itself, but my fears are in feeling like I never truly lived. To face my fear of death, I have to be willing to face my fear of living fully. “I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.” James Baldwin"Whatever goes up must come down." And here we are, at the center of the arc, trapped in the gaudiest, most valuable, and most improbable water wheel the world has ever seen. Everything now, we must assume, is in our hands; we have no right to assume otherwise.” James Baldwin“Life is tragic simply because the earth turns and the sun inexorably rises and sets, and one day, for each of us, the sun will go down for the last, last time. Perhaps the whole root of our trouble, the human trouble, is that we will sacrifice all the beauty of our lives, will imprison ourselves in totems, taboos, crosses, blood sacrifices, steeples, mosques, races, armies, flags, nations, in order to deny the fact of death, the only fact we have. It seems to me that one ought to rejoice in the fact of death — ought to decide, indeed, to earn one's death by confronting with passion the conundrum of life. One is responsible for life: It is the small beacon in that terrifying darkness from which we come and to which we shall return. One must negotiate this as nobly as possible, for the sake of those who are coming after us. But white Americans do not believe in death, and this is why the darkness of my skin so intimidates them.” James Baldwin Baldwin's Book: The Fire Next TimeWikipedia for The Fire Next TimeAlok V. You cannot imagine what it would be like to be dead, because death is an absence of existence. There is, literally, nothing to imagine – because nothingness itself cannot be imagined. There is no perspective, no view from nothingness, nothing to which it can be approximated. So that is the first recommendation: realise that being dead isn't an experience. Death itself isn't really a thing at all. If the internet is an AYCE buffet of unlimited, endless options, there's bound to be items you find disgusting, that will make you physically ill. There's also bound to be items you find delicious AND nourishing and can't get enough of. But a majority of that buffet will be… fine. It will be mediocre filler foods that you don't remember eating at all. You may even fill yourself up on the “just okay ” foods and not realize how much better of a meal it could've been if you'd been more patient or critical with filling your plate. Not to say that mindless consumption isn't incredibly healing, sometimes.I just think it's become normal not to think about anything we engage with, and that can be more toxic than medicinal. It is not all bad, it is not all good, but it is not neutral either. It is what I make of it. It is a reflection of how I engage with it.It, like any tool, can be used as a weapon if we're not being conscious with how we wield it.This is why choosing to engage is such a powerful process.Deciding when it's too much, setting boundaries, creating realistic expectations, and being careful with not letting the algorithm co-opt my agency; all these take conscious effort. The key is staying present and conscious as often as you can.Engaging with shit because you want to, because you make the conscious choice to, not simply because it's there.I think a lot of us have become conditioned to believing “inconvenience is a barrier,” and in reality, on the other side of inconvenience is so much freedom and fulfillment.A healthy amount of resistance is what builds muscles, minds, and ideas. Friction is not the enemy.I think a healthy amount of well-placed friction is the only thing that keeps shit from sliding off the shelves and into a heap on the floor. We are constantly bombarded with shit trying to make us numb, sad, hopeless, defeated, so that we become so overwhelmed with the idea of any additional discomfort (even when it's the good kind) becomes absolutely unbearable. The wealth-hoarding class wants us to be good little cattle who give over our time, data, energy, money, and peace without questioning. So every time we act with intention, we push back against the systems of manipulation, profiting off of our misery.Read episode scripts on Julie's Medium Blog.SUPPORT JULIE (and the show!)DONATE to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund AND THE Sudan Relief FundGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM AND YOUTUBESUBSCRIBE FOR BONUS CONTENT ON PATREON.The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. I accidentally ritualized something that is typically mundane, and that, in itself, is a magical and empowering act. Now, as much as I want to push society towards more “analog” and “slow” options because I genuinely think it would be good for us all to get off of these algorithms for good, it's not the only way to opt into more conscious consumption.“Consciously consuming” as a ritual, instead of a burden, can be applied to almost any aspect of life. When I take a moment to consider the vibe I'm seeking, before engaging with anything, I find myself being more critical with what I engage with. I also find the process to be ultimately more fulfilling and rewarding. If you are addicted to social media or streaming, this may be a difficult transition, but you don't have to change everything about your habits, right out of the gates. You can start with one intentional act a day. As a practice.Quickly, you'll realize just how much time and energy you've spent digesting shit that you didn't even enjoy. You'll start to notice how unfulfilled you tend to feel after spending hours online with no sense of purpose, and how it doesn't always have to feel that way.Read episode scripts on Julie's Medium Blog.SUPPORT JULIE (and the show!)DONATE to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund AND THE Sudan Relief FundGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM AND YOUTUBESUBSCRIBE FOR BONUS CONTENT ON PATREON.The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. It pulls you deeper into your own home, your own phone." - quoted from Lily Alexandre's Youtube Video.Read episode scripts on Julie's Medium Blog.SUPPORT JULIE (and the show!)DONATE to the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund AND THE Sudan Relief FundGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM AND YOUTUBESUBSCRIBE FOR BONUS CONTENT ON PATREON.The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. How do we feel like we're not being watched, when we are being watched?Studies show that citizens tolerate being surveilled, and eventually stop thinking about it. But we tend to act more docile + reliable after we forget. The camera makes you more docile. It makes you a better employee. But the camera has taken something from you. Your complex and unstable kinetic energy. Everyday it reanimates your body in predictable loops.” The first time I realized I was being surveilled without my knowing, was at my first job. Cold Stone Creamery ice cream shop. The rumor was they'd sit at home and watch us at work, but I didn't believe it. One day, I mopped the front when I received a phone call saying, “you only dipped the mop once, the dining room requires three dips for a proper cleaning.” Needless to say, 16 year old me was shook. I never mopped without doing it their way, again. I behaved differently on my shifts, from there on out. I feeling anxious and paranoid — but I'd completely forgotten about what caused it. I just thought, “this is what work feels like.” So it effectively shocked me into submission, with very little effort. The camera is a gun. It's about power. And we all recognize what the power a camera holds. A video at our worst moment, can get you fired, arrested, or harassed. We cope with this reality in our own ways. We stop going out, we stop dancing, we stop interacting. We participate as viewers who critique and judge. Or we pick up the power ourselves, and turn the camera + surveillance and judgement to those around us. How has the surveillance state affected your behavior?Did you realize that the panopticon was affecting you at all?The only way we can learn to cope + navigate without losing ourselves or our humanity, is if we're willing to face it head on.
