Wabi Sabi - The Perfectly Imperfect Podcast with Candice Kumai
Let's be real—life falls apart sometimes. But here's the good news: in Japan, we don't toss the broken stuff—we gold it. This week on Wabi Sabi, I'm diving into the art of kintsugi and how those so-called “cracks” in your life can actually lead you to your ikigai—your purpose, your why, your get-out-of-bed-and-make-matcha energy. We'll talk breakups, burnout, identity shifts, and how feeling “off” can actually be the beginning of something beautiful. It's not about having it all together—it's about loving your flaws, laughing at the mess, and finding your path anyway. This is your permission slip to be a little broken, a little fabulous, and a lot more you.

And I can also profit from it financially in a way that was never possibly in a corporate environment.""I think that the one thing I overestimated, and I wouldn't do that again, Is how much a company depends on its previous owner. In this episode of the Connected Leadership Podcast, Andy Lopata welcomes Sri Chellappa, President and Co-Founder of Engagedly, a performance management software company, and also a passionate entrepreneur, filmmaker, musician, and people leader. He is the host of "The People Strategy Leaders" podcast, discussing the concept of ikigai and its application in creating meaningful workplaces. Ikigai, a Japanese philosophy is centred on finding purpose and can be adapted for organisational use. Sri outlines the interaction of skills, desires, and organisational goals, forming what he calls the "blue zone" where individuals find fulfillment and contribute effectively. Andy and Sri look at the importance of workplace culture, emphasising that even if an individual aligns with the first three circles (skills, desires, and goals), a toxic culture can hinder success. Sri introduces the idea of a fourth circle—engagement and culture—that encompasses all the others, ensuring alignment between personal and organisational values. Sri draws from his experience as a tech entrepreneur and filmmaker to illustrate how leaders can foster environments where employees feel empowered and trusted. The episode explores challenges like red zones, where individuals may possess only one or none of the desired traits, leading to dissatisfaction and inefficiency. Sri discusses how rapid advancements, such as AI, push employees into these zones, necessitating continuous learning and adaptation. Sri's book, "Into the Blue: Implementing Ikigai Philosophy to Create a Meaningful Workplace", serves as both a theoretical framework and a practical tool, featuring a workbook to assess team alignment with Ikigai principles. What We Discussed: Ikigai Framework : Finding purpose through the combination of skills, desires, and organisational goals, creating a "blue zone" where individuals feel fulfilled and contribute effectively to their organisations. Blue Zones & Community: Workplace culture should foster connections to combat isolation and enhance engagement. Leadership Responsibility : Leaders play a critical role in shaping organisational culture. Their behaviours set the tone for how employees interact, empowering teams or perpetuating toxic environments. Decentralised Decision-Making: Sri advocates for decentralised decision-making to promote ownership and collaboration across departments. A conversation with Louis De Jaeger, international keynote speaker, author, award-winning filmmaker, and landscape designer, about dreams, action, and storytelling—how to reach and touch people. We discuss why storytelling is highly underrated and underfunded, and why he is organizing a festival—not the next Burning Man, but a regeneration festival. He shares his excitement about small water cycle restoration, the biotic pump, and much more. And in the end, it all boils down to one simple message: Eat More Trees.During his 5-year sabbatical that turned into a lifelong mission to regenerate landscapes, Louis' revelation came during world travels where he witnessed environmental degradation firsthand—monoculture landscapes so depressing "you want to drive against a tree, but there are no trees." This observation sparked his mission to regenerate 550 million hectares of land globally, potentially cooling our planet by two degrees Celsius.Beyond the environmental benefits, Louis paints a compelling vision of a regenerative future characterized by abundance rather than sacrifice. "We're going to have an even more luxurious lifestyle, we're going to have better food that tastes fantastic" he assures us. His approach isn't about shaming people into environmentalism but showing how regenerative practices create healthier, more desirable lives.More about this episode on https://investinginregenerativeagriculture.com/louis-de-jaeger.==========================In Investing in Regenerative Agriculture and Food podcast show we talk to the pioneers in the regenerative food and agriculture space to learn more on how to put our money to work to regenerate soil, people, local communities and ecosystems while making an appropriate and fair return. We learn about Ron's journey from a finance executive to an entrepreneur, speaker, and author, and how he embraced the Ikigai framework—a Japanese philosophy for finding meaning in work. He introduces the Path to Entrepreneurship Framework, a four-step approach that helps individuals transition from corporate life to a career they love: Find Your Purpose, Build Your Bridge, Burn Your Boats, and Flex Your Muscle. Ron shares insights on overcoming fear, learning to say no, and balancing financial stability with the pursuit of passion, while also exploring the mindset shifts needed to create a career where every day—not just Mondays—feels meaningful and exciting. --- Burn Your Boats Good day, dear listeners, Steve Preda here with the Management Blueprint Podcast. And my guest today is Ron Monteiro, keynote speaker, facilitator, trainer, and the author of Love Mondays. Ron, welcome to the show. Thank you, Steve. I'm very excited to be here. Well, it's exciting to have you. You have a very interesting career coming across the world to be here with us. And you also have some interesting frameworks that you're using. So, let's start with what drives you. What is your personal “Why?” And what is this Ikigai process that you mentioned on social media and your posts that help people find theirs? Yeah, I want to rewind. Like I'm a big proponent of purpose and life work and things like that. Many years ago, I would be shaking my head because I wasn't clear on my purpose. So, I've done a lot of work and a lot of personal development work that a lot of it talks about how do you start with what is your “Why,” what is your purpose? Simon Sinek, as you've mentioned. And my purpose now is I get a lot of joy from helping others. So, the way I've phrased it, how do I help myself and others love Mondays and every other day? And I think it connects to my book, which talks about how do you love Mondays? So today's a Monday that we're recording, and every other day. And then Ikigai is a beautiful Japanese concept that talks about people who don't even have a word for retirement. They love what they're doing so much, and it's connected to their life purpose.Share on X So, Ikigai is a framework I love. There's a whole book on Ikigai, if anybody's interested, which asks four simple questions. “What do you love to do?” is the first one. And this is something we journal. So let's say five years from now, what I love to do might be slightly different than today. So it's not a fixed destination. It's one of those iterative processes. So, you start with “What do I love to do?” The second is, “What am I good at?” So for me, I love teaching and I think I'm pretty good at it. I've done it for a while now. So, what do I love doing? The third is “What does the world need?” Okay, so if I continue with my example, I think the world needs people to teach them things. So, for me, one of my favorite topics to teach is soft skills and story time because I really struggled there. I landed a company that helped me overcome my fear and now I teach it for a living. So that in itself is a “Why” for me. And then the fourth question is, “What can you get paid for?” I know inflation and all these things are coming into play. So, if you can answer those four questions and it's right in the bullseye, right in the heart of those, and think about four circles, concentric circles. If you find something that's in the middle there, it's your Ikigai, it's your reason for living, it's your reason for waking up on a Monday and every other day. And that's, to me, a lifelong journey. And if you hit any of those two questions in isolation,

How have you handled loss in your life?In this episode of the Ikigai Podcast, Nick speaks with June Kashio to explore how embracing Ikigai can provide meaning, resilience, and healing during times of loss.
In this episode, Jennifer and I delve into the multifaceted concept of passion, exploring its role in our lives (beyond the romantic notion often associated with it.) We discuss the pressures society places on individuals to find and monetize their passions, the importance of recognizing that passion can evolve, and the idea of Ikigai as a guiding principle for finding purpose. Also, we talk about nurturing passion without the burden of expectation, allowing it to enrich our lives instead of dictating our career paths. Thanks so much for being here, Tanya Superlatively Yes website Superlatively Yes on Patreon Superlatively Yes Instagram Page Superlatively Yes Facebook Page Tanya's Instagram Tanya's Facebook Takeaways Passion is often misunderstood and can create unnecessary pressure. It's okay for passion to change over time; it doesn't have to be a constant. Many people feel lost when trying to identify their passion, which is normal. Passion should enrich our lives, not dictate our careers. Finding your Ikigai can help clarify your purpose in life. It's important to separate passion from the need to monetize it. Real-life experiences can help uncover what you are passionate about. Nurturing passion can lead to unexpected opportunities and growth. Hard work and honest jobs have intrinsic value, even if they aren't our passion. We should allow ourselves to explore different interests without the pressure of being perfect. "We think we're so different across our communities. We may come from a different country. We might work in different jobs. We might work the land, or work in tech, but we're not all that different —we're human,” says Brian Muegge of the divisions so prevalent in society today. “There really needs to be a better way to connect across the urban-rural continuum. I hope it's through food. and I hope it can be around natural resource conservation." Ikigai is a Japanese word that means "a reason for being". It's a concept that refers to something that gives a person a sense of purpose and joy. Brian Muegge has found his ikigai. A 31 year old with a deep passion for the environment, he has found his purpose in working to steward the planet we are lucky to call home. Growing up in a tech focused community in northern California, Brian always felt like a fish out of water. Instead of following in the path of his father who was a semiconductor engineer, he found himself drawn to the natural world. A fan of Steve Irwin and others, he had his share of pets. "My mother was not particularly good at saying no," he says with a smile. But it was when he accepted a gift of two, fertilized emu eggs and an incubator from a relative that he would test his mother's resolve.A biology major at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, Brian studied the habitat of the yellow-bellied marmot, a research project that earned him the moniker "Marmot Man". He now works with an organization called Salmon Safe, a non-profit organization in the Pacific Northwest that works with West Coast farmers, developers, and other environmentally innovative landowners to reduce watershed impacts. As you listen to this episode, consider:How much do you know about the environment in which you live? Where does your water come from? What birds build their nests in the trees? If you live in a city, what is the impact of city life on the natural world?Take a field trip to a local park or natural setting. Use your senses. Spend some time observing the environment. Read up on the environmental issues facing your community. Consider getting involved in a river clean up or collecting signatures for a local environmental effort. You can learn more about Salmon Safe here.Do you know someone who has a story to tell? Our guest is Rafal Maslankiewicz who is the chef at Ikigai www.ikigai.nyc in New York, which opened in July 2024. Ikigai is a very unique concept. First of all, it is a not-for-profit organization, which is highly unusual for a restaurant. Secondly, beyond covering the fundamental costs of running a business, all proceeds are donated to a food bank. In fact, 80 days after the opening, Ikigai donated over $12,000, which funds 63 tons of food. And what makes Ikigai popular and enables such donations possible is Rafal and his team's excellent food menu and service. With his impressive culinary training at top restaurants under his belt, such as Masa and Eleven Madison Park in New York, he offers creative dishes inspired by Japanese traditions. In this episode, we will discuss the unique concept of Ikigai, how Rafal got into Japanese cuisine after working at serious French kitchens, the meaning of the term Ikigai and much, much more!!!
