Guest intro: Mayumi Pachkoski is a U.S.–based aesthetician and energy-healing practitioner who blended Eastern and Western skincare to build a thriving six-figure studio in Maryland. A former flight attendant who pivoted in her 30s, she now helps practitioners grow healing businesses rooted in purpose and service. 3 Power Takeaways Leap early; build skills on the way. Use "no-brainer" offers to get in the room and learn from pros. (20:07–22:36) Let purpose lead the model. When work sits at the intersection of talent, joy, and need (ikigai), consistency becomes easy. (37:26–38:24) Grow through connection, not discounts. Reward referrers; keep pricing strong; become the story people share. (28:55–31:13) Main Topics, Timestamps, Explanations & Notable Quotes Bold reinvention & "no-brainer" apprenticeships — 20:07–22:36 What it means: Proximity compounds. Offering flexible, unpaid assisting to a top practitioner compresses the learning curve, reveals real-world systems, and creates industry credibility faster than solo trial-and-error. Quote: "You don't have to even pay me… I will clean, vacuum… It's a win-win, a no-brainer offer." Mayumi Ikigai as a business operating system — 37:26–38:24 What it means: Aligning work with what one loves, does well, and what people will pay for transforms effort into enthusiasm; sustainable energy becomes a competitive advantage over hustle-based growth. Quote: "Work doesn't feel like a job… I wake up every morning excited about who I'm going to serve. That's ikigai." Mayumi Referral engines beat discounts — 28:55–31:13 What it means: Paying clients (via generous thank-you credits) to advertise outperforms cutting prices for newcomers; it preserves brand value, attracts ideal fits, and turns great results into free marketing. Quote: "New clients come with the regular price… but for you, as a thank you for the referral, I give 50% off next time." Mayumi Extra Gems (quick hits) Test the move with logistics smarts: Pre-paying six months' rent to secure housing without local job history shows how creative terms remove gatekeeper friction. (10:01–10:32) Mayumi Courageous partner talk: Ask the life-defining question early—"What do you really want?"—then build the plan around it. (05:24–06:22) Mayumi Permission to start messy: Feeling nothing in early energy-work classes didn't stop the pursuit; the right modality (Access Bars, then Quantum Touch) clicked later. Guest Bio Sam Ushio is the founder and Chief Ikigai Officer of Ikigai Lab, a social enterprise that blends ancient Japanese wisdom with modern science to help people and organizations align purpose with measurable impact. Drawing on two decades in corporate leadership and consulting, Sam's work focuses on human sustainability, values-based growth, and bringing humanity back into business. A former financial services executive, Sam experienced a pivotal moment that transformed his understanding of success—from financial growth to personal and purposeful growth. His family's story, rooted in Japan over a century ago, deeply shaped his worldview and introduced him to the authentic essence of Ikigai—the Japanese concept of a "reason for being." Through Ikigai Lab, Sam works with global brands and leaders to create cultures where people thrive through alignment of strengths, values, and daily actions. His frameworks integrate positive psychology, emotional intelligence, and ancient wisdom, inspiring people to live with awareness, gratitude, and intention every day. Sam is also the creator of the Ikigai Summit (soon to be rebranded as Repurpose), an annual event that explores how purpose-driven leadership can reshape organizations and communities for a more meaningful future. At his core, Sam believes purpose isn't a destination—it's a daily practice. His mission is to help others discover and live their Ikigai through the simple yet profound act of aligning who they are with how they live and lead. Summary In this conversation, Shannon Huffman Polson and Sam Ushio explore the concept of Ikigai, its origins, and its significance in personal and professional life. They discuss the importance of family legacy, personal growth, and the misunderstandings surrounding Ikigai, particularly the common four-circle Venn diagram. Sam shares his journey of discovering Ikigai through his family's history and emphasizes the need for gratitude, intentionality, and the integration of personal values in daily life. The discussion also touches on the impact of Ikigai on organizations and the importance of spirituality and rituals in Japanese culture. Takeaways Ikigai is a Japanese concept meaning 'reason for being'. Personal stories shape our understanding of purpose. Financial growth should not compromise personal growth. Gratitude and awareness are essential for a fulfilling life. Ikigai is about aligning daily actions with personal values. The four-circle Venn diagram is a common misunderstanding of Ikigai. Daily life (sekatsu) is central to understanding Ikigai. Mindset and emotional intelligence are crucial for personal development. Reflecting on influential people can help clarify one's values. Ikigai can enhance both personal and professional fulfillment. Chapters 00:00 – What Is Ikigai, Really? Sam Ushio introduces the real meaning of Ikigai—not just an abstract idea of life's purpose, but the alignment of daily actions with personal values and priorities. 01:05 – Purpose as the Foundation of Grit and Resilience Host Shannon Huffman Polson shares how purpose became central to her research on grit and leadership, setting the stage for the conversation. 02:57 – Sam Ushio's Journey from Corporate Success to Purpose Alignment Sam reflects on his background in financial services, the "lightning bolt moment" that shifted his path, and his discovery of a deeper calling through Ikigai. 03:48 – The Power of Family Heritage and Migration Sam shares his great-grandparents' story—leaving Japan to support a 1,200-year-old shrine—and how that legacy shaped his modern understanding of purpose and sacrifice. 08:19 – Realizing the Limits of Financial Growth Sam explains how a career focused solely on financial metrics led to personal disconnection—and how redefining growth became the start of his transformation. 11:03 – The Value of Failure and Creative Experimentation Sam describes his early entrepreneurial struggles and creative experiments that didn't work, emphasizing how failure built clarity and resilience. 13:30 – Discovering the Family Photo That Changed Everything A 100-year-old family photo surfaces at just the right moment, sparking deep reflection and connecting Sam's modern journey to ancestral purpose. 14:52 – Rediscovering Ikigai Through Family Wisdom Sam's Aunt Julie plays a key role in reconnecting him with the true Japanese essence of Ikigai—as a philosophy of balance, awareness, and daily living. 16:33 – Debunking the 4-Circle Ikigai Myth Sam and Shannon unpack the viral "Venn diagram" of Ikigai, exploring how Western interpretations often miss its true meaning rooted in sekatsu—daily life. 20:12 – Ikigai as Daily Alignment, Not a Destination Sam reframes Ikigai as the daily practice of aligning values with actions—living your reason for being moment by moment, not chasing a final goal. 24:21 – Frameworks for Living with Purpose Exploring the fusion of Japanese wisdom and positive psychology, Sam discusses using values and strengths (via CliftonStrengths) to guide intentional living. 26:10 – From Purpose to Measurable Impact Sam connects Ikigai to measurable outcomes in leadership and business, linking emotional awareness, cognition, and behavior to results. 32:10 – How to Begin Your Ikigai Journey Sam offers a practical starting point: reflect on a person who has shaped you, explore the values behind their influence, and connect that to your own life purpose. 34:05 – Practicing Ikigai in Daily Life (Sekatsu) Sam introduces the "Minimum Viable Purpose" concept—testing small daily actions outside your comfort zone to grow purposefully, not perfectly. 38:05 – Purpose in the Age of AI A discussion on how AI is shaping human purpose and connection, and how grounding in values helps navigate rapid technological change. 40:15 – Inside Ikigai Lab: Bridging Humanity and Business Sam explains how Ikigai Lab helps organizations and teams connect individual purpose to measurable impact through human sustainability frameworks. 43:04 – Building Awareness and Intention Across Generations Sam discusses bringing the Ikigai philosophy to workplaces, universities, and communities to help people live and lead with intention. 49:23 – Returning to Japan: A Full-Circle Journey Sam shares the emotional story of returning to his family's ancestral shrine in Japan, honoring generations of purpose, resilience, and continuity. 53:29 – The Sacred in the Everyday Shannon reflects on her trip to Japan, the power of ritual, and what it means to recognize the sacred in daily life—connecting to the heart of Ikigai. 56:11 – Purpose as a Verb, Not a Goal Sam and Shannon conclude that Ikigai isn't something you find once—it's something you live daily, through curiosity, courage, and continual growth. Revolutionizing the Fourth Trimester - IYKYKA quiet revolution can start with tea, a newborn on a chest, and a doctor who sits on the edge of your bed and actually listens. That scene—simple, human, and overdue—is how Dr. Michelle Haggerty rebuilt postpartum care from the ground up after her own losses and years inside a system that treats the fourth trimester like an afterthought. We go deep on matrescence, the often-ignored transformation into motherhood that begins long before birth and reshapes identity, hormones, work, money, and relationships. Michelle shares how fetal cells can remain in a mother's body, why that matters for grief and belonging, and how narrative medicine—structured birth-story debriefs with both partners—can dissolve trauma before it hardens. Then we zoom out to the hard numbers: the U.S. leads developed nations in maternal mortality, 65 percent of deaths happen postpartum, and 85 percent are preventable. Mental health tops the list, while cardiovascular risks hit communities of color hardest. Ten-minute visits miss what home-based care can catch. You'll hear how Michelle left corporate medicine to build Fourth Trimester Doc, where physicians do home visits, answer texts, reduce ER trips, and coordinate lactation, mental health, and pediatric support. We explore direct primary care pediatrics, tiny patient panels, and a bold plan to make postpartum support an employer-paid benefit with onsite groups and well-child checks. Scaling without losing soul means facing the insurance maze, gathering outcomes data, and learning the art of marketing so families can actually find help.Threaded through it all is trust—faith in intuition, in the “baby” of a new business, and in the power of Ikigai, that sweet overlap of passion, skill, need, and income that turns work into energy. If you care about maternal health, mental health, or just better care that meets people where they are, this conversation will stay with you. Ikigai: The Joy of Doing the Work Well Ever met someone who finds pure joy in their work, no matter how simple the task? That's Ikigai - a Japanese concept meaning “your reason to get up in the morning.” After traveling to Japan with Paul Akers, Jason saw how deeply this idea runs through their culture whether in how they trim trees, clean dishes, or lead teams. In this episode, he breaks down what Ikigai really means for builders and leaders: how to design your processes so they're not just efficient but enjoyable. Discover why struggle isn't a badge of honor, how clean systems create flow, and why finding joy in the work itself might be the most powerful form of leadership there is.
What if the hard road is the honest road—and also the most creative? Neuroscientist and author Ken Mogi joins us to explore how Stoicism and Ikigai converge on a single idea: live in alignment with nature, accept limits with grace, and let difficulty forge depth. We move from the awe of a first butterfly to the precision of a rocket launch, tracing how humility, gratitude, and restraint can transform work, relationships, and personal meaning.Ken challenges the stereotypes. Stoicism isn't about shutting down emotion; it's about seeing clearly and acting accordingly. Creativity thrives under constraints because it has to answer to reality—melody has rules, physics has teeth, and craftsmanship respects the materials. That same ethic shows up in Japanese culture: itadakimasu as a daily lesson in interdependence, the ripening rice ear that bows as it grows heavy, and kaiseki cuisine that reveals flavor instead of hiding it. Ikigai, in this light, becomes alignment with who we are and how we want to relate to others, not a checklist of what we're paid for.We also press into modern stakes: AI alignment, the “cult of statistics,” and why humility matters when systems scale beyond any single author. Ken argues for Stoic design principles—restraint, transparency, and alignment with the laws of nature—to keep power tethered to purpose. Along the way, we discuss lowering expectations to reduce needless suffering, desirable difficulties as a compass for growth, and the quiet courage to choose the next step—potential infinity within a human life.If you're ready to replace hype with clarity and busyness with intention, this conversation offers practical wisdom and a fresh lens on meaning, creativity, and resilience. Subscribe, share with a friend who needs a reset, and leave a review telling us which idea you'll practice this week.

This is another one of those odd duck little episodes. I pulled a snippet out of my conversation with Tim Tamashiro where he walked me through the process of identifying my ikigai. I felt a bit awkward when I became the subject of our discussion, and that feeling encouraged me to look more closely at what we talked about. So, there are two parts to this episode. First, Tim is helping me figure out my ikigai. And then the follow up is my reflection on where we landed and where I might go from there. If you're curious, give this process a try. Exploring your ikigai is a way of articulating who you are and what matters to you most. Ask yourself these four questions: what do you love to do, what are you good at, what does the world need, and how do you want to be rewarded? If you want more detail on the process, you can watch Tim's TEDx talk about ikigai on youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pk-PcJS2QaU . And please note, the Canadian guitarist whose name I couldn't remember is Donna Grantis, who played with Prince in his band 3rdeyegirl.

Last week, Jackie who I was working with on my coaching offer, asked me "What do you mean by the term your own Essence"?And I wanted to explain it a little more in this solo episode since connecting with your own essence is a foundational aspect of my career reinvention mentorship program where I guide you to find work that makes you come alive and gives you energy. As trait as it sounds, the answers are within you, they are just covered up by conditioning, disappointments and demands and circumstances of life. An example of your essence is the knowing that you have deep inside of you, a resonance you feel when something is or isn't right for you.I was also encouraged that my latest interview guest David Marlow spoke about our essence - I felt a spark light up that people get it and know what it means, because it's kind of hard to describe it.Listen to the full interview with David on how to find your Ikigai & purpose here:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/career-in-technicolor-create-work-and-life-you-fall/id1584835608?i=1000732638722Your essence is that driving force that keeps speaking to you thru your intuition. Are you listening? If you enjoyed this episode, follow the podcast and share it with someone who's looking for a new career and more fulfillment. What resonated most with you? Meaning doesn't have to shout to be real. In this conversation with educator and certified life coach Minako Horaguchi, we re-center ikigai where it belongs: in the small daily moments that make life feel worth living—morning coffee in quiet light, a page of honest journaling, the waku waku spark when your heart lifts for no external reason. We unpack why the viral career diagram misses the point for many people and how a Japanese lens invites presence, harmony, and contribution without the pressure to turn joy into a business plan.Minako shares her path from a rural childhood in Takayama to teaching, entrepreneurship, and coaching in San Francisco, and how midlife uncertainty led her to a simple but powerful practice: writing a vivid five-year vision and taking tiny aligned actions. We dig into the difference between purpose and ikigai—purpose as your long why and roles as the way it shows up—while ikigai includes small, immediate sources of meaning that grow with you. As AI reshapes work, this inner clarity and social attunement become essential, helping you navigate change with grounded self-worth.Harmony threads through the entire episode. Drawing on Japanese cultural roots—from rice-farming cooperation to everyday respect—Minako explains how listening before judging conserves energy, reduces conflict, and keeps you focused on what matters. We explore how the seasons model healthy rhythms of action and rest, and how sustainability turns personal meaning into community impact. Expect practical takeaways: ten-minute daily reflection (voice notes if you dislike writing), the tree metaphor for nurturing your “ikigai seed,” and simple ways to practice curiosity in tough conversations. If you're tired of equating meaning with achievement and you're ready to build a life that feels good from the inside out, this one's for you. Ikigai, a Japanese concept that translates to "a reason for being" or "a reason to live," focuses on the intersection of what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. Doesn't that sound like a critical consideration for college students and applicants? Amy and Mike invited admissions expert V. Peter Pitts to explore how ikigai can help to choose a college major. What are five things you will learn in this episode? What is IKIGAI? How can an Ikigai exercise help in narrowing down your major? Do students really need to choose a major before choosing a college? Do majors really matter? What matters more than choice of a major? What is the biggest mistake students make in choosing a major? MEET OUR GUEST V. "I believe when I sleep at nighttime I die. Then when I wake up I got a new life." These powerful words from Ai Kihara set the tone for a profound conversation about finding meaning through Japanese wisdom traditions.Based in Auckland, New Zealand, Ai brings a unique perspective to mental health practice, drawing from her heritage as a descendant of both spiritual practitioners and samurai. She offers refreshing insights into concepts that have become misunderstood in Western culture—particularly Ikigai. Far from being merely a "dream job" formula as popularized in Western books, authentic Ikigai can be something as simple as enjoying ice cream or seeing a friend smile. This flexibility makes it a remarkably effective tool in suicide prevention, where Ai has witnessed how redirecting attention to even the smallest source of meaning—like remembering to feed a pet cat—can create the crucial connection needed to choose life. The conversation delves into several Japanese therapeutic approaches that challenge Western assumptions. Where Western treatment for depression often emphasizes activity ("do something, work hard, exercise"), Morita therapy takes the opposite approach—rest, do nothing, don't think, until natural motivation returns. Central to this practice is Arugamama—accepting things exactly as they are without judgment. This radical acceptance creates the foundation for genuine healing by acknowledging reality rather than distracting from it.Equally fascinating is Ai's personalized Naikan practice, which she's maintained for over 30 years. Each night before sleeping, she reflects on what she did for others, how others helped her, and what she learned from her experiences—a simple yet profound practice that maintains her connection to purpose. Her integration of Zen concepts like Ichienso (perfect circle) into art therapy helps clients visualize wholeness while acknowledging life's impermanence.Whether you're interested in alternative approaches to mental health, seeking deeper meaning in your own life, or simply curious about Japanese philosophy, this conversation offers valuable insights into how ancient wisdom can address very modern problems. Listen now to discover how small moments of meaning might transform your perspective on what makes life worth living.
Welcome to the sixth episode of our miniseries on Finding Your Ikigai, where we invite a series of guests to explore what it truly means to live a good life, incorporating the concept of Ikigai alongside Providend's Philosophy of Sufficiency. As trusted advisers to affluent clients for over two decades, we've always advocated that clients prioritise life decisions before financial ones. These life decisions are what we refer to as “Ikigai” decisions. In this episode, our Founder and CEO, Christopher Tan, chats with Shulin, a lawyer turned recruiter and Managing Director at Aslant Legal, whose mission is to serve the legal community. She is also the host of the podcast After the Bar, where she interviews lawyers, former lawyers and other movers and shakers in the legal industry. Shulin reflects on her evolving understanding of Ikigai, using it to embrace her God given strengths and pursue what truly lights up her life while making a meaningful impact on others. She emotionally recalls grieving the loss of her “lawyer” title and shares that, while money was never her main motivator, she feels genuinely happy and fulfilled, something that cannot be measured in financial terms.Through deep conversations with our advisers, you will gain clarity on what matters most in life and what needs to be done to live a good life, both financially and non-financially—with your Ikigai goals at the forefront of your wealth plan.Music courtesy of ItsWatR.The host of this episode, Christopher Tan, is Chief Executive Officer of Providend, Singapore's first fee-only wealth advisory firm and author of the book “Money Wisdom: Simple Truths for Financial Wellness”.The full list of Providend's Money Wisdom podcast episodes from Season 4 can be found here.Did you know that our Providend's Money Wisdom podcast is now available in video format on YouTube? Her work is as much about purpose as it is precision, drawn from 30+ years in high-pressure creative environments. Now, Raquel's own journey—pivoting from film and TV into a world of purpose coaching—shows what's possible when you stay open, evolve with the moment, and choose to lead with meaning, even when the industry around you changes. And while she's still producing global projects and managing iconic artists, her heart is set on something bigger: helping people reconnect to who they are, why they're here, and how they want to show up next. Here's where to find more:https://www.linkedin.com/in/raquelbrunodrivehttps://www.instagram.com/raquellovesdrive________________________________________________Welcome to The Unforget Yourself Show where we use the power of woo and the proof of science to help you identify your blind spots, and get over your own bullshit so that you can do the fucking thing you ACTUALLY want to do!We're Mark and Katie, the founders of Unforget Yourself and the creators of the Unforget Yourself System and on this podcast, we're here to share REAL conversations about what goes on inside the heart and minds of those brave and crazy enough to start their own business.
