What gives meaning to your life when faced with loss and challenge? For Andriana Ubuduki-Kalfa, the answer emerged at her mother's funeral when a Japanese friend approached her about meeting her daughter, saying simply: "she was your mother's ikigai."This profound moment transformed Andriana's understanding of ikigai beyond the familiar Western interpretation of four overlapping circles. As a Japanese-Greek performance coach with over 30 years of experience bridging cultural differences, Andriana discovered that ikigai can be found in the simplest pleasures—a morning coffee, a dog's greeting—or in profound connections to people and places that sustain us through life's darkest moments. Our conversation explores how Andriana blends the Greek love of dialogue (rooted in the Socratic method) with Japanese concepts like mindfulness, kaizen, and kokorozashi (warrior spirit) to help Olympic athletes and executives achieve remarkable results. She shares moving personal stories, including how visualizing a small harbor in the Greek islands became her mental "resting port" during a serious health challenge, carrying her through surgery and recovery with hope and purpose. Most powerfully, Andriana reveals how reconnecting with our inner child leads us back to our authentic selves—"where real clarity lives." By approaching life with shoshin (beginner's mind) and kokishin (curiosity), we create space for deep observation and reconnection with what truly matters.Whether you're seeking better performance, deeper meaning, or simply a fresh perspective on life's challenges, this conversation offers wisdom that bridges Eastern and Western traditions in surprisingly practical ways. The insights shared might just help you discover your own ikigai—that special something that makes your life worth living each day.
Here's what I see constantly with brilliant coaches and service providers: You know you're amazing at what you do, but if you're trying to help everyone, you're actually helping no one. When you lack ideal client clarity, you end up spinning your wheels and wondering why your expertise isn't translating into consistent income. Generic messaging attracts nobody. Specific messaging attracts exactly the right people and repels the wrong ones. In this live coaching episode, I'm working with Monina, a 20-year beauty industry veteran struggling with the exact challenge that keeps most coaches stuck. Through our real-time conversation, we go from confusion to crystal clarity using my proven framework. You'll discover: The Ikigai framework for finding your profitable ideal client intersection The "splinter in the foot" client theory that changes everything Why course vs. program language kills or creates connection Monina's breakthrough moment when we identified her true zone of genius How specificity beats generalization every single time Resources mentioned: Free coaching questions: https://amanda-walker.com/home/questions/ Strategy call: amanda-walker.com/letschat Connect with Monina: Modern D studio, The Beauty Lab Podcast Connect with Amanda: @awalkmyway

Author and speaker Scott Pectol shares how he went from stressed, sleep-deprived, and on autopilot to energized, leaner, and purpose-driven—without extreme gimmicks. After a harsh wake-up call from his doctor, a deep dive into sleep science, Blue Zones eating, and the “happiness macronutrients” (enjoyment, satisfaction, purpose) reshaped Scott's health and mindset. He breaks down the morning routine that keeps him consistent (pushups, walking, meditation, cold showers), why he chose an alcohol-free path, and how to build a lifestyle that supports fat loss, better sleep, and long-term happiness. What You'll Learn Why sleep is the #1 lever for energy, cravings, and sustainable fat loss The difference between enjoyment vs. satisfaction vs. purpose—and why most of us over-index on quick hits How Scott cut alcohol (and kept his social life) during the lockdown—and why energy became the ultimate motivator Blue Zones-inspired eating (beans/legumes, fiber, minimally processed foods) and real-world experiments that guided his diet A simple monk-style morning routine to hard-wire consistency and self-trust How to use ikigai to align work, health, and purpose Culture vs. biology: why ultra-processed foods hijack dopamine and wreck sleep, mood, and metabolism Tiny “do-it-today” actions that compound: walking, hydration, morning light, breathwork, and cold exposure Notable Quotes “Energy is the first ingredient of happiness—and sleep is the first ingredient of energy.” “Do one hard thing every morning you don't want to do that benefits your future self.” “I stopped outsourcing my emotions to food, alcohol, and TV—and took ownership.” “Walk, sleep, and simple whole foods beat hacks and heroics—consistency wins.” CTA If this episode helped you, follow/subscribe and leave a rating & review—it helps more people find the show. Show Notes: Simon Western is joined by Yoko Kunii Aldous - lecturer, coach, hypnotherapist and cultural translator - to explore the deeper roots of this Japanese concept, revealing it to be less a “life purpose formula” and more a way of being-in-the-world. Yoko reflects on her journey from Japan to the UK and how living between languages and cultures opens up inner landscapes. She shares the real history of Ikigai - not as a productivity hack, but a pre-capitalist way of locating oneself in community and cosmos - and interrogates why the popular Western Venn diagram (“what you love, what you're good at…”) oversimplifies and erases its cultural nuance. Drawing on Japanese concepts, Yoko frames language as a worldview where nature, spirit, and objects are integral to self-understanding. She speaks of spirituality in everyday life - from cherry blossoms to chopsticks - and explains why Ikigai should be seen as fluid, shifting across life stages and relationships, rather than as a fixed endpoint. The conversation explores the tension between individualism and collective responsibility, asking whether one can truly have Ikigai without caring for the village. From embracing imperfection through wabi-sabi, to recognising sacrifice and service as pathways to fulfilment, the episode challenges Western coaching to move beyond self-improvement toward a more relational, ecological, and culturally entangled way of living. Key Reflections: True Ikigai cannot be pinned down or defined - it must be lived Culture shapes not only what we think, but how we feel our way into meaning Japanese aesthetics embrace imperfection (wabi-sabi) as essential to beauty and purpose Spirituality in Japan is woven into the everyday - from teacups to trees Personal meaning and collective wellbeing are not separate projects Every item has a spirit Keywords: Ikigai, cultural insights, coaching, psychology, Japan, Western perspectives, personal development, spirituality, Venn diagram Brief Bio: Yoko Kunii Aldous is an award-winning university lecturer, coach, and language and culture trainer for the Ministry of Defence. She holds an MA in Applied Linguistics and an MSc in Coaching Psychology, and is a certified coach, hypnotherapist, and yoga instructor. Her background in language and communication informs her work in higher education, cross-cultural training, and personal development coaching. Her latest research explores how the Japanese concept of Ikigai is understood and applied by non-Japanese coaches. Her study critically examines how Ikigai is interpreted and integrated into coaching practices outside Japan, revealing common misconceptions and promoting a more culturally authentic understanding. This work was recognised with the Best Early Career Research Paper award by BPS Division of Coaching Psychology. By integrating Eastern philosophy with Western psychological theory, Yoko offers a coaching approach that is reflective, holistic, and grounded in cultural nuance. She supports individuals and professionals in aligning their core values with purposeful action, towards meaningful and sustainable change.
Welcome to the fifth episode of our miniseries on Finding Your Ikigai, where we invite a series of guests to explore what it truly means to live a good life, incorporating the concept of Ikigai alongside Providend's Philosophy of Sufficiency. As trusted advisers to affluent clients for over two decades, we've always advocated that clients prioritise life decisions before financial ones. These life decisions are what we refer to as “Ikigai” decisions. In this episode, our Founder and CEO, Christopher Tan, sits down with two of his long time friends and army buddies, Han Kiat, an Associate Professor, and Maurice, an Accountant, to talk about all things ikigai and the role it plays in their lives. For Han Kiat and Maurice, choosing to serve in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) beyond the mandatory ten years was not just a commitment, it became their ikigai, a purpose they held closely for much of their early adult lives. Now as fathers, they reflect on their shared experiences, even as their sons serve in different vocations during their National Service. Does a different path diminish the value of their own ikigai? And how did they bridge the gap between those differences with their sons? They reflected on how simple, ordinary moments, and being there for one another over the years, can become something deeply meaningful and also part of their ikigai. You may find Han Kiat's full letter mentioned in the podcast here: https://providend.com/finding-ikigai-saf-fatherhood/Through deep conversations with our advisers, you will gain clarity on what matters most in life and what needs to be done to live a good life, both financially and non-financially—with your Ikigai goals at the forefront of your wealth plan.Music courtesy of ItsWatR.The host of this episode, Christopher Tan, is Chief Executive Officer of Providend, Singapore's first fee-only wealth advisory firm and author of the book “Money Wisdom: Simple Truths for Financial Wellness”.The full list of Providend's Money Wisdom podcast episodes from Season 4 can be found here.Did you know that our Providend's Money Wisdom podcast is now available in video format on YouTube? What happens when a successful financial advisor abandons commissions to build an ethical wealth management company? Christopher Tan takes us through his remarkable journey from sleeping on his family's living room floor to founding Provident, a fee-only wealth advisory firm in Singapore that's redefining how financial decisions serve life's most meaningful pursuits.Chris reveals the formative experiences that shaped his ethical compass: growing up in a humble family where his bus driver father's earnings were stretched by his resourceful mother, developing leadership skills during six years as an army officer, and experiencing a moral awakening when a client questioned why he kept selling him unnecessary insurance products. This pivotal moment led Chris to walk away from lucrative recurring commissions to establish a company aligned with his values. The path wasn't easy. Launching his firm on September 11, 2001, facing licensing delays, and navigating the 2008 financial crisis where his company lost $100 million in three months tested his resolve. Yet these challenges crystallized his "philosophy of sufficiency" – a powerful approach that reframes contentment not as settling for less, but actively identifying what truly matters and arranging finances to support those priorities. What makes Chris's approach extraordinary is how he's integrated the Japanese concept of ikigai into wealth management. Rather than pushing clients to accumulate endlessly, he helps them make what he calls "ikigai decisions" – life choices that reflect their deepest values – before making financial ones. This paradigm shift has transformed how his clients view money: not as the goal, but as the enabler of a life worth living.Beyond client relationships, Chris has created what he calls a "corporate family" culture where employees find psychological safety, grace, and forgiveness alongside professional accountability. His dedication to developing the next generation of ethical leaders while honoring their own sources of meaning exemplifies his holistic understanding of true wealth.Ready to rethink your relationship with money? Join us for this thought-provoking conversation that challenges conventional financial wisdom and offers a more fulfilling path forward. How might your life change if your financial decisions followed your life decisions, not led them?

Welcome to the fourth episode of our miniseries on Finding Your Ikigai, where we invite a series of guests to explore what it truly means to live a good life, incorporating the concept of Ikigai alongside Providend's Philosophy of Sufficiency. As trusted advisers to affluent clients for over two decades, we've always advocated that clients prioritise life decisions before financial ones. These life decisions are what we refer to as “Ikigai” decisions. In this episode, our Founder and CEO, Christopher Tan, has a chat with Choon Jin, an accountant by training whose career has spanned corporate mergers and acquisitions, insurance leadership, and regional consulting, before making the leap into entrepreneurship and reflecting on the role of balancing different 'Ikigais' in his life.Choon Jin talks about how he began questioning what he truly wakes up for, leading to a career switch that better aligned with his values. He also shares that a turning point came when he had a heart attack while overseas, forcing him to confront not just his Ikigai at work, but also the need to prioritise another: his family.Through deep conversations with our advisers, you will gain clarity on what matters most in life and what needs to be done to live a good life, both financially and non-financially—with your Ikigai goals at the forefront of your wealth plan.Music courtesy of ItsWatR.The host of this episode, Christopher Tan, is Chief Executive Officer of Providend, Singapore's first fee-only wealth advisory firm and author of the book “Money Wisdom: Simple Truths for Financial Wellness”.The full list of Providend's Money Wisdom podcast episodes from Season 4 can be found here.Did you know that our Providend's Money Wisdom podcast is now available in video format on YouTube? What a $500M Tech Exit Taught Him About Building a Thriving Architecture FirmWhat does a $500 million tech exit have to do with building a thriving architecture firm? In this episode, Amos Peleg shares his incredible journey—from a young man determined not to follow in his architect father's footsteps, to building Pelleck Linehouse, a thriving 20-person architecture firm. After six years of study split between Israel and New York City, Amos graduated from City College in 1999 and was quickly swept into the world of tech, joining a rooftop loft startup that sold for $550 million just three months later. That experience sparked his passion for entrepreneurship, launching a years-long pursuit of starting his own business through repeated trial and error.Eventually, family needs brought Amos back to Israel, where he partnered with a close friend and rebuilt his father's struggling firm. Along the way, he learned what it really takes to build a sustainable architecture practice—hiring the right people, identifying profitable niches, and designing processes that free him from the daily grind while still leading as CEO.He reflects on lessons from architecture school under his father's critical eye, working under a Holocaust survivor, and navigating the tension between personal passion and professional success. Through it all, Amos champions the power of vision, strategy, and Ikigai—aligning what you love, what you're good at, and what the world needs. This week at EntreArchitect Podcast, What a $500M Tech Exit Taught Him About Building a Thriving Architecture Firm with Amos Peleg.Learn more about Amos Peleg and his work at Peleg Kleinhause, and connect with him on LinkedIn.Please Visit Our Platform SponsorsArcatemy is Arcat's Continuing Education Program. Wabi Sabi - The Perfectly Imperfect Podcast with Candice Kumai
Let's be real—life falls apart sometimes. But here's the good news: in Japan, we don't toss the broken stuff—we gold it. This week on Wabi Sabi, I'm diving into the art of kintsugi and how those so-called “cracks” in your life can actually lead you to your ikigai—your purpose, your why, your get-out-of-bed-and-make-matcha energy. We'll talk breakups, burnout, identity shifts, and how feeling “off” can actually be the beginning of something beautiful. It's not about having it all together—it's about loving your flaws, laughing at the mess, and finding your path anyway. This is your permission slip to be a little broken, a little fabulous, and a lot more you.
