We have long lacked a biography of Erving Goffman. Partly this can be explained by Goffman's direction for his papers not to be opened to researchers after his death. This meant those who may wish to write Goffman's biography had a lack of material to draw upon. Dmirti Shalin, author of Erving Manuel Goffman: Biographical Sources of Sociological Imagination (2025, Routledge), has overcome this by developing the Erving Goffman Archives, a collection of correspondence, family histories, syllabi and reminisces which allows for this book to exist as the first true biography of the great scholar. In providing the details of Goffman's life, Shalin has provided new ways of looking at Goffman, showing how factors like his upbringing in a family of Russian Jewish immigrants, his relationship with, and the sad suicide of, his wife, his interactions with colleagues and his everyday interactions shaped his sociology. Along the way we are encouraged to look anew at Goffman's work on topics such as the presentation of self, mental health, gambling and gender. In doing so, we learn much about Goffman not just as a scholar, but as a man. In our conversation we cover the whole of Goffman's life, moving from his youth and onto the significant points in his career and their impact upon his sociology. We also discuss the archive and how it came to be and discuss what Goffman's legacy maybe for the future of democratic politics. In today's episode, I'm joined by the extraordinary Juhea Kim to discuss her latest novel, City of Night Birds—a haunting and lyrical exploration of artistry, love, and redemption set against the backdrop of the Russian ballet world. The novel centers on Natalia Leonova, once the most celebrated ballerina of her generation. After a catastrophic accident ends her career, Natalia returns to St. Petersburg in 2019, grappling with addiction and the ghosts of her past. As she navigates the city that shaped her, she confronts memories of her complex relationships: her great love, Alexander, who transformed both her life and art; and Dmitri, a dark and treacherous genius whose actions contributed to her downfall. When Dmitri offers her a chance to return to the stage in her signature role, Natalia must decide whether she can face the people and the world that nearly broke her.In our conversation, Juhea and I explore themes of forgiveness, identity, and the transformative power of art. Juhea shares insights into her research process, her connection to the world of ballet, and how she crafted a narrative that resonates with both intimacy and grandeur. We talk about the moral responsibilities that authors have, literature as a work of art, the world around us and so much more. A bit about Juhea before we begin: she is the author of the acclaimed debut novel Beasts of a Little Land, which was a finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize and the winner of the Society of American Historians Prize for Historical Fiction. Her writing has appeared in Guernica, Catapult, Zyzzyva, and The New York Times Modern Love. Born in South Korea and now based in Portland, Oregon, Juhea is also a passionate advocate for animal rights and environmental justice. This is a beautiful and deeply human conversation, and I can't wait for you to hear it.Support the show

We finally did it! After months of promises we finally got around to covering the (probably) last of Sony's Spider-Man-less Spider-Man movies. It's 2024's Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ariana DeBose, and Russell Crowe. After a cold open action sequence in a Russian prison that serves as Aaron Taylor-Johnson's sizzle reel for his Bond audition, we are transported to the distant past of probably around 2012. Sergei (Taylor-Johnson) and Dmitri (Fred Hechinger, the Tim Robinson-looking fellow who played Caracalla in Gladiator II) Kravinoff are taken out of boarding school by their mob boss father Nicoli (Crowe) after their mother's suicide. The best healing can only be done once they hunt down a lion serial killer in the savanna named Zar. Unfortunately, Zar gets the drop on Sergei and he's horribly mauled. However, the lion's blood, combined with a magic potion administered by passer-by Calypso (DeBose) brings him back to life AND gives him Captain America-level superpowers. He leaves home and heads to Siberia to murder poachers and hone his skills. Years later, Dmitri is kidnapped by rival mob boss Aleksei (Alessandro Nivola) a.k.a. the Rhino, who he got a surgical procedure to turn into a rhino man unless he's constantly pumping anti-rhino venom into his body through a backpack. Sergei, now going by Kraven, goes off on a series of expensive-looking adventures to save him. Can Kraven save his brother in time? Who's really behind this kidnapping? And, most importantly, when does Kraven get his VEST? You'll have to listen to find out!

Since the 1940s and 50s, back at the origins of what we now think of as artificial intelligence, there have been lots of ways of conceiving what it is that brains do, or what the function of the brain is. One of those conceptions, going to back to cybernetics, is that the brain is a controller that operates under the principles of feedback control. This view has been carried down in various forms to us in present day. Also since that same time period, when McCulloch and Pitts suggested that single neurons are logical devices, there have been lots of ways of conceiving what it is that single neurons do. Are they logical operators, do they each represent something special, are they trying to maximize efficiency, for example? Dmitri Chklovskii, who goes by Mitya, runs the Neural Circuits and Algorithms lab at the Flatiron Institute. Mitya believes that single neurons themselves are each individual controllers. They're smart agents, each trying to predict their inputs, like in predictive processing, but also functioning as an optimal feedback controller. We talk about historical conceptions of the function of single neurons and how this differs, we talk about how to think of single neurons versus populations of neurons, some of the neuroscience findings that seem to support Mitya's account, the control algorithm that simplifies the neuron's otherwise impossible control task, and other various topics. We also discuss Mitya's early interests, coming from a physics and engineering background, in how to wire up our brains efficiently, given the limited amount of space in our craniums. Obviously evolution produced its own solutions for this problem. This pursuit led Mitya to study the C. elegans worm, because its connectome was nearly complete- actually, Mitya and his team helped complete the connectome so he'd have the whole wiring diagram to study it. So we talk about that work, and what knowing the whole connectome of C. elegans has and has not taught us about how brains work. Chklovskii Lab. Twitter: @chklovskii. 2423 - America's Entrepreneurship Spiral; Farm Workers Terrorized w/ Erik Baker, Teresa Romero

The Majority Report with Sam Seder

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 30, 2025 71:00

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Erik Baker, professor of the history of science & labor at Harvard University, to discuss his recent book Make Your Own Job: How the Entrepreneurial Work Ethic Exhausted America. Then, she speaks with Teresa Romero, president of the United Farm Workers (UFW), to discuss the Trump administrations's immigration executive orders and directives, and their impact on UFW workers. First, Emma runs through updates on a major plane crash out of DC in the wake of Trump's FAA hiring freeze and gutting of the aviation safety committee, the passage of the Laken Riley Act, Trump's new immigrant detention camp in Gitmo, Trump's myriad anti-migrant EOs, the confirmation hearings of Tulsi Gabbard and Kash Patel, Meta's $25m gift to Trump, Bob Menendez's prison sentence, and Israel's ongoing assault on Palestinians, before expanding on the context for the major crash outside of Reagan Airport in DC yesterday. Professor Erik Baker then joins, diving right into the history of America's particular work ethic strain of entrepreneurialism, unpacking its rise in the early 20th Century's major job shortage, with unemployment reaching nearly a quarter of the country by the peak of the Great Depression, shifting the dominant ethos from one of hard work to one of creating your own work, and birthing the entrepreneurial spirit that dominates the post-industrialized neoliberal gig-economy of today. Expanding on the evolution of American entrepreneurialism, Professor Baker explores how the rise of this ethos was met with industries eager to exploit it, from the rise of “self-help” and the gig economy to the rise of cryptocurrencies and sports gambling, all encouraging the exploration of alternative, often precarious lines of “work,” wrapping up the interview with a deep dive into how entrepreneurship sees this precarity, and the failures that often result from it, as a validation of the successes, allowing for the spirit to continuously reinvent itself through crisis, personal or economic. Teresa Romero then joins, as she and Emma dive right into the recent threats mailed to various United Farm Workers locations over Trump's incoming wave of deportations, exploring how, over less than two weeks, immigrants – regardless of citizenship – have been overtaken by an environment of fear and insecurity over their (and their family's and community's) safety, with no institution – from school to church to work – safe from ICE's indiscriminate raids. Expanding on this, Romero unpacks the central role undocumented people play in the US farming industry, and the overwhelming exploitation and abuse they face without institutional backing from unions (or, in theory, the government), with growers and employers – despite their obvious reliance on the labor of undocumented folks – eager to take advantage of the increasing insecurity as Trump's reforms come into practice, before they wrap up the free half by unpacking the need to create a genuine path to citizenship for farm workers whose presence is so important to our country. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they unpack Pete Hegseth and Jesse Watters' gleeful discussion of Trump's new 30k capacity migrant detention camp at Guantanamo, and watch RFK's myriad hypocrisies put on display at his confirmation hearing. Dmitri from Germany unpacks the dearth of non-Zionist perspectives on Gaza in Russian media, and Bob Menendez starts his Eric Adams-esque appeal to Trump, plus the MR Crew unpacks the ridiculousness of “MAHA,” and their experience with the inefficiency (and absurdity) of modern policing, plus, your calls and IMs! Anyways Kraven's little brother can make himself look and sound like anyone he wants but he cannot change his height and Chameleon's a little guy! We cannot stress how bad of a film this is. At the end of the film sweet Dmitri (that's the Chameleon) has taken over his daddy's mob business (daddy got got by a bear, a bear that Kraven presumably had a conversation with? It is unclear) which got us thinking: how? Sure he started with the power of being his crime dad's son, but what if he was starting from zero (and the powers of mimicking anyone but as a short king)? How many times have you heard claims that Israel is an imperialist country? That Israelis are settlers on Arab land? That Israel is an apartheid state? As a black, gay Jewish man, Dmitri Shufutinsky has heard it all. He spent years on American campuses before flying to the Middle East and joining the Israel Defense Forces, giving him a full view of what the common anti-Israel arguments are. Too much time and energy, he felt, was being spent focusing on right-wing antisemitism. He wanted to look at the left. After the conflict that erupted between Israel and Hamas in May 2021, Shufutinsky decided to start writing a book to counter the common talking points. He finished the entire manuscript before Oct. 7, 2023—and now, one year after the Hamas attack that saw 1,200 Israelis killed or kidnapped, he's finally publishing it under the title of Jew Jitsu: Turning Our Enemies' Arguments Against Them. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. For our guest Dmitri Julius, co-founder and president of House Dreamr Streetwear, his first step was cutting lawns as a youth, and his next was serving as a Sergeant in the Marines. A tale of transformation from military life to the world of social entrepreneurship, Dmitri's journey is a testament to the power of resilience, ambition, and continuous learning. He details how his time as a youth entrepreneur, then serving in the military, and working for the start-up Icon Homes conditioned him for success in entrepreneurship and shares the inspiring story of founding House of Dreamr and the Dreamer Foundation. In the heart of Austin, Texas, Dmitri has built space for community in a city with few Black folks, underlining the significance of collaboration, mentorship, and relationship building. He shares the challenges and rewards of being a Black entrepreneur in a predominantly white city and the importance of building social capital in such an environment. His insight into working with established entrepreneurs and his belief in uplifting the younger generation is truly inspiring. Buckle up as we traverse the terrain of Dmitri's personal life, his pursuit of a doctorate in psychology, and his commitment to passing down knowledge to budding entrepreneurs. We navigate through his transition from military service to civilian life, the pressure of catching up with peers on traditional paths, and the importance of mental health among veterans. As we round off our conversation, Dmitri recommends books such as "The Lean Startup," "The Pivot Year," and "Unreasonable Hospitality" for those embarking on their own entrepreneurial journey. This episode is a treasure trove for anyone looking to turn their dreams into reality: a testament to the power of knowledge, the value of mentorship, and the benefits of a community-focused mindset.Support the show

Another classic from the vaults.  Original description:  This week, we're covering Part III of Charles Williams' supernatural thriller, War in Heaven, in which the good guys (The Archdeacon, Kenneth Mornington, and the Duke) steal the Graal back from Gregory Persimmons, who desires to use it for his own dark purposes.  They then must pray to prevent the Graal from being magically disintegrated from a long distance by Manasseh and Dmitri, two more advanced members of Gregory's shady organization.  We'll also witness a friendship blossoming between all three of our protagonists, talk about how holy and unholy detachment can help make for a very exciting* plot, throw a little shade at King Henry VIII, discuss pagan interpretations of the Graal, and speculate about how P.G. Wodehouse may have been the secret ingredient in Gregory's eventual redemption.  This conversation went well over an hour--if you simply can't get enough of Charles Williams, you're in for a treat.  And hang around (if you'd like) for some bonus material at the very end--should be worth a laugh or two.  I mean, we laugh, anyway.   Music from Lohengrin by Wagner, Mercury by Holst, Venus by Holst, and, of course, "Take the Land," by Don Potter.   We reference William Blake's poem, "And did those feet in ancient time," which speculates on the very strange legend that the boy Jesus may have been taken to England by Joseph of Arimathea at some point--presumably a pre-Graal excursion for Joseph (I don't think even Blake believed this, though).  "And did those feet" was set to music by Sir Hubert Parry as "Jerusalem," an anthem/hymn that helped revive the drooping nationalism of British troops during World War I and remains popular to this day.   If you haven't read any of P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster series, we encourage you to drop everything and do so as soon as possible.     Finally, this podcast will probably be more fun for you if you read along with us.  Feel free to pick up a copy of Charles Williams' War in Heaven!   If you're enjoying these episodes and have constructive feedback, we'd love to hear from you!  Our email is InklingsVarietyHour@gmail.com.  Feel free also to leave us a review on iTunes if you want to see more of this sort of thing.

China's dominance of global supply chains for many goods, including clean energy technology, is increasing concerns about resilience, security, and geopolitical influence in today's new era of great power competition.
