This lecture was given at Trinity College Dublin on 13 February 2020. Professor Lewis Ayres is a professor of Catholic and Historical Theology at Durham University. His core research has focused on Trinitarian theology in Augustine and in the Greek writers of the fourth century. His current research concentrates on the development of early Christian cultures of interpretation between 100 and 250. He is currently working on a book titled As it is Written: Ancient Literary Criticism and the Rise of Scripture AD 100-250 (Princeton University Press). Professor Ayres has also edited and co-edited numerous books including the The Cambridge History of Christian Literature (with Andrew Louth and Frances Young) and The Oxford Handbook of Catholic Theology (with Medi Ann Volpe). In addition to his research, writing, and editing projects, Professor Ayres has an interest in a number of in topics in modern Catholic fundamental and dogmatic theology. These include the modern reception of Patristic Trinitarian theology, the place of Scripture (and Tradition) in modern Catholic theology, and the modern use of post-idealist themes in the supposed “revivals” of Trinitarian theology that have occurred over the last two centuries. From 2009-2012, Professor Ayres was the inaugural holder of the Bede Chair fo Catholic Theology. From 2013-2015 he also served as Distinguished Fellow of Norte Dame’s Institute for Advanced Study. Professor Ayres is also a Visiting Professional Fellow at the Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry of the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne. The Cross is at the very centre of our faith. For the earliest Christians, Passover was essential to their understanding of the Passion, but there are other biblical images which created imaginative traditions: sacrifice and scapegoat, the Tree of Life and other surprising links with to the Garden of Eden, and rich resources of paintings and poetry. On Passion Sunday, as we turn our thoughts towards Holy Week, Frances Young introduced her profound and far-reaching thinking about the Cross. 2 April 2017.

An award-winning New Zealand novel, Into the River, which depicts the reality of teen sex, faces outcry and a temporary ban, yet there is infinite access to often unrealistic and misogynistic online pornography. YA novelists Ted Dawe and Karen Healey, and sexual therapist Frances Young, with chair Mandy Hager, discuss what young adults can handle and gain from sex in literature. Do books with sexual themes promote empathy and provide a safe space for teens to explore dangerous situations? Or are we sending our kids straight to hell?

Chapter 13 – Athanasius, Ambrose and Arianism The variety of issues discussed in the Council of Nicaea (325 AD) ranged from how to date Easter to whether to ordain eunuchs as priests, but everything was secondary to settling the Arian controversy. Arius taught that Jesus was made by God and was not divine on the same level as God. Athanasius played a key role in opposing Arianism, condemning it as heresy and emerged as the key figure in the triumph of orthodox theology. Ambrose also continued to oppose heresies in the church. He sold off his family holdings and gave the proceeds to those in need. He opposed the Empress Justina who was a strong supporter of Arianism.
