In episode 286 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Matthew Ayres. Matt works in recruitment and is the current partner of great friend of the pod and Just Checking In Live (JCIL) #6 headliner Jade Morgan Kelly. We met Matt at JCIL #6, and he told us he wanted to share his story on the podcast. Matt grew up in Exeter, in Devon, and when he was around 16/17 years old, he was told by his mum that his dad, the man he had thought was his dad for his entire life up to that point, was not actually his dad and was actually his step-dad. Naturally, his entire worldview collapsed and he spent the next few years trying to figure out who his biological father was, and also who he was too. Eventually, after setting up an Ancestry account, which allowed him to find out who his biological uncle was and connect with him, he discovered who his dad was and met him for the first time in a pub in East London. Since then, Matt and his dad have met up several times since and have as good a relationship as can be expected when their lives took such different paths. It's important to state that Matt's dad had no idea he existed and was not told that the mother of his first child was even pregnant, so neither Matt nor us at VENT place any blame on his dad for being absent for most of his life up to this point. In this episode we chart this journey, how meeting a ‘high-performance coach' that his workplace had in place helped him massively with his mental health, the periods in his childhood where he rebelled against his step-father, not even knowing he wasn't his dad, the moment he discovered who his dad was and that first meeting with him. We also discuss the stigmas that still exist for men's mental health and question if we need to change the language around therapy to encourage more men who do need it to seek it out? And finally, how we need to move from crisis strategies and campaigns for men to more preventative strategies, so we don't have men seeking help for the first time when they are always in crisis mode. Welcome to Episode 22 of the Bar Study Motivation Podcast, where we feature an uplifting story of determination and triumph. In this episode, we sit down with Jeanna Ayres, a newly licensed attorney who shares her honest and inspiring journey through law school, multiple bar exam attempts, and the ultimate victory of passing the Texas bar. Jeanna's story is one of resilience and passion. As a Texas A&M University graduate with a strong interest in family law, she was deeply involved in advocacy and research throughout her legal education. She opens up about the emotional rollercoaster of taking the bar exam four times, the challenges of managing burnout and motivation, and the crucial role her support system—family, friends, and her significant other—played in her success. During our conversation, Jeanna reveals the evolution of her study strategies, discussing what didn't work and what finally helped her succeed. She shares her experiences with different bar prep programs, including Bar Exam Drills, flashcards, one-sheets, and working with a tutor. Her insights highlight the importance of repetition, targeted practice, and adapting your study approach to suit your personal learning style. We also explore the mental and emotional challenges of waiting for results, dealing with setbacks, and overcoming self-doubt. Jeanna talks candidly about coping with disappointment, navigating family expectations, and finding strength through faith and determination. Her journey is a powerful reminder that perseverance pays off, leading her not only to pass the bar but also to secure her dream job through networking and never losing sight of her goals. Jeanna's advice for future bar takers is both practical and heartfelt: give it your all the first time, don't let fear of imperfection stop you from taking the exam, and most importantly, believe in yourself. She encourages listeners to rest during the waiting period, pick up hobbies, and seek support whenever needed. If you're preparing for the bar or facing setbacks, Jeanna's story will motivate you to keep going, adapt your approach, and remember that your journey is uniquely your own. Jeanna is also open to connecting with anyone who needs advice or encouragement, so don't hesitate to reach out. Be sure to listen through to the end for a bonus discussion about why Bar Exam Drills is such an effective bar prep tool, along with more candid insights to help you on your path to becoming an attorney. Subscribe for more real stories from those who have been in your shoes, and let's keep supporting each other on the journey to law licensure.

Mick Ayres has had a fascinating and varied career with the Walt Disney Company, working as a magician, storyteller, and musician. Like many performers, his world was upended by the Covid pandemic. But Mick found a new stage at the thirteen Marriott Resorts scattered across Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. For years, Mick shared his expertise in act construction, scriptwriting, and character development through his column, The High Road, in M-U-M. I found these articles so insightful and practical that I felt they deserved a broader audience. That's why I've been sharing them in our newsletter, and I'm thrilled to announce that Mick will also be contributing fresh insights through his The Art of Conjuring column—I'm sure you'll find them fun and engaging. To mark the occasion, I sat down with Mick for a conversation about his journey. We discussed his background, mentors, music, scripting, time with Disney, and his secrets for presenting magic to everyday audiences. Mick is a fantastic storyteller, and I thoroughly enjoyed our chat. I'm sure you will, too. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michaelclose/support

Why are alcohol and tobacco legal, but psychedelics outlawed? Why are antidepressants handed out like candy? Why is something as addictive as sugar promoted on the “healthy eating” guide? We are constantly reminded that our noble leaders and institutions are busy working on solutions. Surely, the scary world of today must give way to a future of peace and prosperity... someday soon! But of course, it never happens, does it? New wars are justified, countries are bombed, citizens flee around the world, epidemics and famines come and go, oil is spilled, rainforests are cleared, stocks go up, and all the while people everywhere seem to be getting sicker and weaker. The same question always hangs over everything: with all the taxes we pay and all the great advances in technology and learning, why doesn't it ever seem to get better? The most obvious answer must be that a better world was never the intention. If you look carefully, the situation everywhere seems to be getting worse. That can only be deliberate. We are told that the world is making progress, but the reality is that it gets better only for a select few. By any sensible measure, the rest of us are constantly slipping further into physical, mental, and spiritual sickness. ILLNESS MUST BE PART OF THE PLAN. Enter Dr. Jeremy Ayres and John Gusty, co-authors of The Red Pill Revolution and today's guests on Food Heals. This book may be a hard pill to swallow, but it's a necessary conversation for anyone wishing to sanely navigate the chaotic and predatory culture we all find ourselves in. We all know something is just not right. We all sense the imbalance, injustice, and insanity. But what can we actually do about it? Who and what can be trusted? Most of what is discussed in this book would never make its way into mainstream corporate media. This is not only the problem but also the solution.
