John Anderson: Conversations
Why Modern Education Is Producing Activists, Not Thinkers | Prof. Simon Haines and Dr. Fiona Mueller

John Anderson: Conversations

In this conversation, John Anderson sits down with Prof. Simon Haines and Dr. Fiona Mueller to examine how Australia's schools and universities stopped teaching children how to think, and what a genuine restoration of education would look like. The results are measurable in falling literacy, rising school refusal, and a curriculum that has prioritised ideological formation at the expense of knowledge. From the classical roots of Western education and the Trivium to the ideological capture of teacher training and university management, Haines and Mueller expose the ideas driving the decline and the institutions already proving a better model is possible. What is at stake is not just educational outcomes, but the capacity of the next generation to reason clearly, to govern themselves wisely, and to pass on what they have inherited.Prof. Simon Haines is the Distinguished Professor of Liberal Arts at Campion College Australia, Adjunct Professor at the Australian Catholic University, and a founding Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities. He previously served as the inaugural CEO of the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation and is a Director of Humanities for Life.Dr. Fiona Mueller served as Head of ANU College at the Australian National University and as Director of Curriculum at the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), and was named among the five most influential people in Australian education by the Australian Financial Review in 2019. She is an Adjunct Fellow with the Centre for Independent Studies, a Senior Fellow with Advance HE (formerly the Higher Education Academy), and currently serves as Director of Research at the Page Research Centre.

In this special episode, Matt is joined by the co-developer of Self-Determination Theory (SDT), Richard M. Ryan, to talk about all things motivation. Think of it as a primer on SDT. We hit the basics… What is motivation? What is SDT?‎ ‎What are the origins of SDT?‎ ‎The different types of motivation.‎ ‎Rewards and their impact on one's motivation.‎ ‎Of course, the famous three basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness).‎ ‎We discuss strategies one may take to either create environments to meet others' needs or to do it for oneself.‎ ‎What is well-being? How is well-being related to motivation?‎ ‎Is SDT universal? Is it culturally descriptive in all cases?‎ ‎And more! During our discussion on mindfulness, Rich refers to a recently published meta-analysis.  The reference is: Donald, James N., Helena Nguyen, James H. Description In this episode, Dr. Jack Hickey, a leading researcher in hamstring injuries, shares valuable insights into the complexities of hamstring rehabilitation and injury prevention. He discusses the common misconceptions surrounding hamstring rehab, emphasizing the importance of understanding the adaptations targeted by specific exercises rather than simply mimicking injury mechanisms. Dr. Hickey also delves into the significance of hamstring muscle architecture, particularly the role of fascicle length as a modifiable risk factor for injury. He highlights recent research comparing the effectiveness of exercises like Nordic hamstring exercises and Romanian deadlifts in enhancing fascicle length. Dr. Hickey further explores his pioneering work in pain threshold rehabilitation, explaining how allowing low to moderate levels of pain during rehab can lead to better strength and muscle adaptation without delaying return-to-play timelines. He also touches on the fragility index as a measure of the robustness of risk factors associated with hamstring injuries. Throughout the conversation, Dr. Hickey underscores the importance of individualized rehab programs, incorporating both on-field and gym-based conditioning, and the need to prioritize fundamental principles such as load management and athlete well-being. He also provides a glimpse into ongoing and future research endeavors aimed at advancing our understanding of hamstring injury mechanics and prevention strategies. This episode is packed with practical advice and evidence-based approaches for clinicians, making it a must-listen for those involved in sports medicine and rehabilitation. Guest Jack Hickey is a leading researcher in the field of hamstring injuries. Jack is currently based at Maynooth University in Ireland, where he joined in 2023 as the first academic in the Department of Sport Science and Nutrition. Before that, he was a Senior Lecturer at the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne and part of the SPRINT Research Centre, focusing on sports performance, injury, and rehab. Carbohydrates have always been part of the endurance equation—but how much, when, and which types remain hotly debated. In this listener-driven episode, we tackle those questions and more, exploring a new paradigm in performance fueling that's reshaping how athletes think about energy during exercise. Dr. Jamie Whitfield, Senior Lecturer at Australian Catholic University's Mary MacKillop Institute for Health Research, joins us to break it all down. For years, endurance athletes were trained to conserve carbs by becoming better fat-burners—adapting diet, training, and supplements to spare glycogen. But that thinking is evolving. As Jamie explains, the focus now is on maximizing carbohydrate use. Why? Because carbs are a more oxygen-efficient fuel source than fat—providing more energy per unit of oxygen. That efficiency improvement is a performance advantage in itself—like a supershoe, but internal. We dig into how elite athletes are pushing 90 to 120 grams of carbs per hour, and what it takes to train the gut to handle it. Are there limits? What happens when intake exceeds demand? Where does the glucose go? Are there health risks? We also explore carb types and ratios, strategies for carrying fuel without excess weight, and how to tailor intake to your individual needs.Jamie brings clarity to the technical details, helping translate complexity into actionable insight. If you're fueling training or racing, this episode will reshape your approach to performance nutrition—and maybe your results too.Show notes and linksDiscourse is our VIP community, and it was questions from those listeners that inspired this interview. Since the 1970s, historian Sheila Fitzpatrick has made invaluable contributions to our understanding of the Soviet Union. As a key figure in the "revisionist school" of Soviet history, Fitzpatrick along with other historians opposed entrenched Cold War era narratives about the USSR including (but not limited to) the "totalitarian thesis". Fitzpatrick in particular added texture and complexity in her studies of the Soviet Union by focusing on social history, perspectives "from below" and daily life as well as social and economic advancement & upward mobility during Stalinism. On today's episode, we welcome Sheila Fitzpatrick on as a guest to reflect on the development of Soviet history since the 1970s, her work and what the Soviet past looks like today. Sheila Fitzpatrick is a historian of the Soviet Union and modern Russia. Her books The Cultural Revolution in Russia, 1928-31 (1978), Education and Social Mobility in the Soviet Union, 1921-34 (1979) and The Russian Revolution (1982) were foundational to the field of Soviet social history. She taught for many years at the University of Chicago, before returning to Australia, the country of her birth. Her book, White Russians, Red Peril: A Cold War History of Migration was published by Black, Inc., Melbourne, in 2021; followed by The Shortest History of the Soviet Union in 2022. She is currently working on a monograph, Displacement: Repatriation and Resettlement of Russian and Soviet Displaced Persons after the Second World War, and a biography of Lenin's wife, Nadezhda Krupskaya, under contract to Princeton University Press. She is currently a professor at the Australian Catholic University.

Despite regulatory progress, investment crowdfunding has yet to reach its full potential. A newly proposed tax credit aims to change that, incentivizing millions more to participate in funding small businesses while boosting local economies.Brian Christie, co-chair of the Crowdfunding Professional Association (CfPA), and Levi Brackman, CEO of Invown, joined me on Superpowers for Good to discuss this groundbreaking proposal. The initiative, led by a broad coalition of industry players, seeks to provide a tax credit for investors who fund businesses under Regulation Crowdfunding (Reg CF)."The way this tax credit works is that you get half of the dollars that you've invested as a credit—up to a $1,000 cap," Brian explained. "So if you invest $2,000 in one or multiple companies in a given year, you get a $1,000 tax credit when you file your taxes."The potential impact is staggering. Although crowdfunding has already enabled millions of Americans to invest in startups and small businesses, the vast majority of the population remains unaware of the opportunity. Brian sees this tax credit as a pivotal mechanism for awareness and engagement. "If all of a sudden it shows up on your annual tax filings, a lot of people will learn about it very quickly."Levi, an outspoken supporter of the initiative, believes it could dramatically shift the financial landscape for small businesses. "Capital formation is really difficult," he noted. "In the old days, you had a local bank manager who knew you and could vouch for you. That's gone. Crowdfunding fills that gap, but we've barely scratched the surface. This tax credit could help scale it massively."Levi envisions a future where tens of millions of Americans actively invest in small businesses. "Imagine if 50 million people each invested just $500 a year. The amount of capital flowing into the economy would be enormous, creating jobs and strengthening communities."Keep reading below. Learn more at ccajp.us.tl;dr:* A new tax credit proposal could dramatically boost Regulation Crowdfunding by incentivizing millions of investors.* Brian Christie explains how the tax credit offers a 50% refund on investments up to $2,000 annually.* Levi Brackman highlights crowdfunding's potential to fill small business funding gaps in a post-local bank era.* The initiative could channel billions into small businesses, creating jobs and strengthening communities nationwide.* Advocates urge action by joining the coalition, contacting legislators, and spreading awareness to drive policy change.Beyond sheer economic growth, the proposal aligns with how the government has historically incentivized positive behaviors. "The U.S. incentivizes things like home ownership, charitable giving, and child-rearing through the tax code," Levi pointed out. "Why shouldn't investing in small businesses—arguably the backbone of the economy—be encouraged the same way?"Opponents of tax credits often raise concerns about costs or who benefits most, but Brian argues that this particular incentive pays for itself. "Our preliminary analysis, along with industry data, suggests that every dollar invested in small businesses has a sixfold ripple effect in the economy. Over ten years, the net impact on the Treasury could be an $80 billion surplus."The coalition behind this initiative isn't limited to crowdfunding platforms like Invown, StartEngine, Republic, and Small Change. It also includes investors, accountants, attorneys, and small business owners who recognize the broader benefits of democratized capital access. For those eager to support the effort, joining the coalition is free and simple. Brian emphasized that beyond signing up, individuals can make an impact by calling their legislators, sharing the initiative on social media, and writing letters to the editor. "We even provide templates to make outreach easier," he said.Levi added that persistence is key. "I've been cold-calling congressional offices, and it's amazing how quickly you can reach someone influential just by making the effort. If this matters to you, just pick up the phone and start the conversation."The proposal is strategically timed, given that key tax policies from the 2017 tax bill are set to expire. Advocates hope to see the crowdfunding tax credit included in the next major tax package or passed as a standalone bill. For those ready to take action, the coalition's website, ccajp.us/join, offers resources to get involved. This is a grassroots movement, and every voice counts. If successful, this initiative could change the game for small business investing, making crowdfunding more accessible, impactful, and widespread than ever before. He is the author of three books including The Gospel Hoax, The Text of Galatians and its History, and Papias of Hierapolis. He is also the author of many peer reviewed journal articles. Dr. Stephen Carlson and I did a podcast episode in April on why we should trust our Bible translations. In this discussion we talked about the Book of Enoch, an ancient text that claims to have been written by Enoch (prior to the flood).
