You're listening to SONG IMPLODER — where musicians take apart their songs piece by piece and tell the story of how they were made. And then talk shit about those songs and make you embarrassed you asked about them in the first place. On this episode we conclude our examination of Local H's 5th studio album: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO P.J. SOLES? Released in April of 2004, the album marked a major stylistic departure and reevaluation for the band — paving the way for all that's come in its wake. Now on the day of a remastered re-release, we join singer/songwriter/guitarist Scott Lucas, producer Andy Gerber, and master of his domain Gabe Rodriguez to look back on the writing, recording and reception of the album that Lucas and many of the band's fans have come to see as their finest. Scott Lucas of Local H brings you The LIFERS Podcast. Every episode, Scott —along with Gabe Rodriguez and producer Ben Reiser— will talk to other "lifers" and compare notes of life on and off the road, the ups and downs of a career in music and entertainment. On the first episode: Scott, Gabe and Ben feel each other out, try to nail down a rhythm, and fumble towards a format for the show. Without a proper guest (THAT's for the next episode!), this episode devolves into a grilling of Gabe — Local H's ex-tour manager, tambourine player, and now one-man merchandising and record company G&P powerhouse. Like HAM FISTED, a rough—but necessary—debut.

Double, Double, Boil & Trouble! It's... that rarity of a Walt Disney Animated Feature that's a disaster? How much so? What if we told you it cost $44 million dollars to make over a period of 5 years (actually 14 when you count when it was optioned for development)? The BLACK CAULDRON represented a point when the old guard and the new age began at the Walt Disney studios, right after the retirement of the "Nine Old Men" and just before all of the films to come that would usher a golden period for family entertainment. The Black Cauldron: ambitious, non-musical, rated PG (and cut down from a PG-13, allegedly even an R!), loaded with talent and aimed to be the first animated studio film shot and released for widescreen 70MM film in 6-track dolby sound. What went wrong? The Doctors are in to open up the patient and see what's in the organs of this adaptation of The Chronicles of Prydain (and they may be joined, if only briefly, by a former guest to the show and long-time supporter Gabe Rodriguez - at least in one form). wagesofcinema@gmail.com clip taken from Trailer to Black Cauldron.
