In Legends and Soles, Sonny Vaccaro, in collaboration with 11-time Emmy-award winner and six-time New York Times bestselling author Armen Keteyian, peels back the layers of sensational media stories and headlines, providing an unvarnished look at his pivotal role not only in Michael Jordan's ascent as arguably the world's most famous-and richest-athlete, but Vaccaro's other consequential relationships, including those with Hall of Famers Kobe Bryant and Tracy McGrady. He reflects on the crushing disappointments, as well, detailing the shocking eleventh hour betrayal by Adidas that led to the loss of a then-18-year-old phenom, LeBron James. He describes reaching a career-defining "inflection point" where he abandoned the shoe industry entirely to pursue his advocacy of athlete's rights bringing readers into the tense, landscape-altering nine-year drama behind the O'Bannon federal lawsuit that changed the face of college sports.Considered basketball's ultimate insider, Vaccaro remains a formidable, passionate voice in the worlds of sports marketing and collegiate sports. His visionary promotional innovations-beginning with the signing of college coaches to Nike endorsement deals followed by the signing of Jordan, revolutionized sports marketing. An outspoken advocate for the rights of athletes, he was the catalyst behind the landmark Supreme Court decision giving control of Name/Image/Likeness (NIL) rights to tens of thousands of college athletes, recently affirmed by the historic $2.8 billion settlement by the NCAA and major conferences opening the door to fair compensation for the real stars-the athletes themselves. Recently he was the central character in the hit movie Air, directed by Ben Affleck and starring Matt Damon as Sonny, exploring a four-month snapshot of his extraordinary eight-decade life. Vaccaro, still an affable and outspoken personality, resides on the West Coast with his wife, Pam. "There have been literally thousands of stories written and broadcast about me over the years," said Vaccaro, "but this time the story is being told by the only person capable of setting the record straight-about Michael, getting blindsided when Phil Knight fired me, my battles with the NCAA, the seminal O'Bannon lawsuit, and many other personal revelations even my closest friends don't know. And I've got the documents to back up every last word." This memoir is far from a recounting of events; rather it's the never-before-told journey of a middle-class kid from a small steel town in western Pennsylvania who rose to the top of a mountain-a rich, revealing tapestry of relationships, triumphs, and challenges through the world of sports, business, and culture told by a man at the epicenter of it all, at Nike and beyond. With a 16-page photo insert illuminating some of Vaccaro's most treasured career memories, Legends and Soles is the long-awaited memoir of a giant of American sports.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

On today's episode, Vince sits down with Luis Navia, a former Cuban-American drug trafficker who played a central role in the international cocaine trade for over 25 years, and Jesse Fink, the author who chronicled Luis's story. Born in Cuba, Luis fled to Miami with his family after Castro's takeover in 1959. Raised in privilege, he attended private schools and Georgetown University before becoming involved in drug trafficking in the 1970s. Known in South American cocaine circles as “El Senador,” Luis worked with powerful cartels, including Escobar's Medellín cartel, the Cali cartel, and Venezuela's Cartel de los Soles, building extensive smuggling networks across Latin America, the Caribbean, and the U.S. In 2000, Luis was arrested in a global operation that involved the DEA, FBI, and Colombian authorities. After being held accountable for over 10 tons of cocaine, he cooperated with U.S. authorities, providing critical information on cartel operations and serving five years in prison. Together, Luis and Jesse share insights into the dangerous world of drug trafficking, the decisions that led to Luis's rise and fall, and the lessons learned along the way. To find out more about Luis's story, check out Jesse Fink's book: Pure Narco: One Man's True Story of 25 Years Inside the Cartels Borderland is an IRONCLAD Original Learn more about your ad choices. Hey, hello, how was your day? “Whatever Happened to P.J. Soles,” originally released 20 years ago, has grown to become a fan-favorite Local H album, and remains the favorite of band leader Scott Lucas. In his words, “P.J. P.J. talks about why the way she said “totally” secured her role in the film, what it's like to shoot a sex & death scene all at once, and her thoughts on her legendary death scene being recreated at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios. P.J. also tells us her experience working with Bill Murray on Stripes, how she had to wrestle Rod Stewart for the jacket she would use for Rock ‘n' Roll High School, and working alongside a very friendly Harrison Ford on the made for TV film The Possessed. Plus, filmmaker Jay Cheel of The Film Junk Podcast helps Matt face his Halloween fears on location during I Was Literally There Too. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
It's been just over a week since the two events that constituted the “grand finale” of Local H's WHATEVER HAPPENED TO P. J. SOLES? 20th anniversary tour — but Scott's head is still swimming. Both the LIFERS movie screening at the Music Box and the epic 3-hour set at Metro have left him feeling like a bit of a whisper of a husk of a shell. So forgive us while we perform a post-tour postmortem to sort it all out. It's a decompression process that includes werewolves, harmonicas, Paul Di'Anno, Freddy Kruger, cartoonish physical reactions, future LIFERS screenings, P.J. encores, Gabe's acting process, Eddie Mahoney, and we answer some burning questions from our listeners.
Okay… Well, that was a LOT! In many ways, this last Tuesday & Wednesday in Wrigleyville (let's call it LOCAL H DAYS 2024) was a culmination of everything that's been in the works since that day when Scott got the call that Helmet was cancelling the tour — just BEFORE he'd received the call that the LIFERS movie was getting a release date at the Music Box (see episode #186). Of course, one could argue that this H convention had been building up since the movie was shot at the Metro almost 3 years ago (to the day — just shy a month!). And that same person could also argue that it all started with the original WHATEVER HAPPENED TO P.J. SOLES? release 20 years ago — while the zen hippie across the room is babbling about how Scott's entire LIFE has been leading up to this! And they'd all be right. Whatever the case — there is a lot to say about the LIFERS world premiere at the Music Box and the finale of the WHTPJS? 20th anniversary tour at the Metro — BUT!!! Not on this week's episode. Instead, Ben has put together a… uh. Vibe? A mood piece? Ah. Here's what it is: A chunk of audio verite constructed to capture a moment that is already starting to fade from memory like a far-off and hazy dream. Go to bed, Scott!
John Maytham is joined by Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews to invite support for the ‘Soles for Souls' campaign, which aims to provide 42,200 pairs of school shoes to children in need across Cape Town. Andrews will run 42.2 km in the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on 20 October 2024 to raise awareness. He highlights the importance of proper footwear for students' dignity and encourages community support through donations and participation, urging everyone to share the campaign on social media with #SolesForSoulsSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
When the young Zion, Ill., band Local H shrunk from four members to two, leader Scott Lucas decided he liked the guitar-and-drums attack and has stuck with it for more than 30 years. Local H has had its moments of popularity (the 1996 album As Good As Dead and single “Bound for the Floor”), critical triumphs that fell short commercially (1998's dazzling concept album Pack Up the Cats) and subsequent albums that showcase Lucas' smart, melodic songwriting, his formidable vocal and guitar chops, and the duo's ferocious interplay. Local H is marking the 20th anniversary of Whatever Happened to P.J. Soles?, the album that Lucas thinks best represents him, with deluxe rereleases and shows, including the tour finale Oct. 16 at Metro Chicago. The previous evening Lucas is premiering his hybrid Local H concert film Lifers at Chicago's Music Box Theatre. The ever-thoughtful Lucas has much to say about bands, labels, maintaining a vision and the meaning of success.
Hey, everybody! It's Ronnie DiCola!!! The WHATEVER HAPPENED TO P.J. SOLES? tour is in the home stretch as we welcome the third partner in the Local H throuple to the show. For the very first time! You'd think we'd take this opportunity to query Ronnie about his hopes and dreams and history playing drums in Chicago institutions like The Arrivals and All Eyes West. But noooo! We squander that chance with inane chatter about Was Not Was, Three 6 Mafia, Gabe's cats, WHAT'S THE BEST?!? road movies, boob jokes, the fucking LIFERS movie, and a skit about Kris Kristofferson (R.I.P.!) and Toby Keith.
Local H are STILL on the road. So you know what that means. ANOTHER ROAD REPORT!!! But this time we're dragging Sincere Engineer's Deanna Belos into the hotel chat room to talk about laundry, P.J. Soles movies, Riot Fest, New Found Glory tours, M.A.S.H, Hootie & The Blowfish, Bruce Springsteen noogies, and (as promised) a supersized round of WHAT'S THE BEST?!?: Novelty Songs.

You're listening to SONG IMPLODER — where musicians take apart their songs piece by piece and tell the story of how they were made. And then talk shit about those songs and make you embarrassed you asked about them in the first place. On this episode we conclude our examination of Local H's 5th studio album: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO P.J. SOLES? Released in April of 2004, the album marked a major stylistic departure and reevaluation for the band — paving the way for all that's come in its wake. Now on the day of a remastered re-release, we join singer/songwriter/guitarist Scott Lucas, producer Andy Gerber, and master of his domain Gabe Rodriguez to look back on the writing, recording and reception of the album that Lucas and many of the band's fans have come to see as their finest. I'm Ben Reiser.
