HEAVY Music Interviews

At the end of the day, music and the creative arts is all about expression and having fun. In the modern age of entertainment that sense of enjoyment has slowly eroded due to the complexities of the current global climate and the incessant wish to not offend anybody which has resulted in a terser, more rigid sprinkling of bands and musicians that seem void of life because of their over-complicated approach. And what better way to enjoy your craft and have fun than play around with someone else's music? Which is exactly what …And We All Die did with their recent four-track release Static Age.Essentially just two Misfits songs reimagined - Static Age and TV Casualty - the EP sees both songs performed in vastly different fashions, with neither bearing much more in common with the original than by virtue of the song title. Not that the two classic songs have been bastardised beyond recognition - some bands you just don't mess with - but both versions have been afforded the respect they deserve while maintaining just enough of …And We All Die's musical DNA to make the songs their own while still paying homage to the original recordings. The release is a heavy blend of hardcore, post-punk, noise-rock and industrial influences, centred around covers of the two Misfits' tracks alongside two industrial-infused reworkings of the songs featuring Metal Blade synthwave artist Gost.HEAVY recently caught up with the man behind the music, Raymond Estes, to find out more, starting with how the EP has been received."It's been great," he enthused. "So far it's been the best reception we've had for any release. It's hard to say why that is, maybe Spotify is actually working for us this time (laughs), but we can't really complain. Really, the project is me, but it's everybody who contributes and the drummer Walter and guitarist Guillermo are excited about the volume of people that are checking out the tracks and the amount of streams we've been getting. Who knew?"We press Estes on the choice of songs to cover, specifically why choose the Misfits as a band to start with, and also why those particular two songs."I love the Misfits," he shrugged, "and have for a long time. I like horror punk and all that Danzig has done, but for …And We All Die we don't really do horror songs. We do more conceptual songs or songs about the human condition and as a hardcore guy I thought what would be more interesting to do than take songs that are dark and have these more science fiction themes based on the perils of technology and make those fresh. That is more exciting to me than singing about ghouls or zombies."In the full interview, Estes explained the thought process behind covering the same song twice, with the second version being more industrial and featuring contributions from Ghost and William Faith. He mentioned that the band was conscious of not going too far with their covers, as they were aware of the special meaning these songs hold for many people. The early reception of the EP has been positive, with the industrial versions receiving the better response. We talked about deconstructing the songs and then recreating them in their image and any difficulties they faced. The conversation turned to future new music, with a rock album, collection of covers from The Cure, other projects and more. Estes discussed why …And We All Die is currently a studio project only and how he plans to potentially expand that into a touring outfit down the track plus a host of other things.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

A HardLore Investigative Special… In this incredibly special deep dive, we sit down with an important name in Misfits history: Tom Bejgrowicz, formerly of Caroline Records. When the band sued Danzig for nearly 20 years of back payment for performance royalties, Caroline Records stepped into the foot the bill… in exchange for owning the entire Misfits discography. Enter then lower level Caroline employee Tom Bejgrowicz, who's intimate knowledge and passion for The Misfits landed him the nearly impossible task of creating the formal releases for the Misfits' intended debut LP “Static Age”, their legendary discography Coffin Boxset, and eventually their even more legendary lost 2nd LP, “12 Hits From Hell”… Which was cancelled right before its official release. We were lucky enough to have Tom personally tell us the incredible story of why the band came together to stop “12 Hits” from officially releasing.. Enjoy. BLOODSONG RETURNS AGAIN WITH GLUB! What is Glub? It is a song in the style of the Misfits Cough/Cool era band. Tune in and groove on! Check out Bloodsong HERE - https://bloodsongofficial.bandcamp.com/ https://imisanthropeofficial.bandcamp.com "Cough/Cool" is the first single released by the horror punk band the Misfits. It was released in August 1977 on singer Glenn Danzig's label Blank Records. 500 copies were produced on black 7" vinyl. Both songs from the single were re-recorded and re-released in various versions over the following twenty years. The Misfits had formed in February 1977 in Lodi, New Jersey, with a lineup including Danzig (who also played electric piano), bassist Jerry Only, and drummer Manny Martínez. the band was without a guitar player for six months. Danzig therefore used his electric piano to fill out the rhythm on the two songs "Cough/Cool" and "She", which were recorded in June 1977 at the Rainbow Studio and mastered at Spectrum Sound in Brooklyn, New York, by Rich Flores. By the time of the single's release in August 1977 the band had added First guitarist Franché Coma and Danzig phased out the piano in favor of singing exclusively. Caiafa's surname was misspelled on the single's sleeve as "Caifa",[1] leading him to insist that from then on he be credited as "Jerry, only Jerry". "Jerry Only" soon became his pseudonym, which he has continued to use throughout the rest of his career. The subject of the song "She" is not mentioned in the lyrics, but Misfits associate Eerie Von noted in The Misfits box set in 1996 that the song was about Patty Hearst. The lyrics reference Hearst's participation in a San Francisco bank robbery in 1974: "She walked out with empty arms, machine gun in her hand/She is good and she is bad, no one understands/She walked in in silence, never spoke a word/She's got a rich daddy, she's her daddy's girl". "Cough/Cool" and "She" were re-recorded and re-released in several versions in subsequent years. "She" was re-recorded in January 1978, with guitar in place of the electric piano, for the Static Age album. The album was not released in its intended form for 20 years, though many of its songs saw release in various versions over the years. "She" had been one of three songs from the sessions that were never mixed, however, and so this version was not released until 1997, when Static Age was finally issued in its entirety. A third version of "She" was released in 1985 on the compilation album Legacy of Brutality, with overdubbed guitar and bass tracks by Danzig. This version was reissued on Misfits the following year. A new version of "Cough/Cool" appeared on Collection II in 1995; this version was recorded in 1987 by Danzig and former Misfits photographer Eerie Von . Danzig used the drum track from the original recording, but Danzig overdubbed guitar and drum machine tracks and new vocals. The original mixes of both "Cough/Cool" and "She", from the original single, were included in The Misfits box set (1996) along with the alternative versions from Legacy of Brutality and Collection II. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/frumess/support

From our friend and guest on this episode, Lyra Stephens: "I heard the Misfits for the first time when I was 13, and, even though it was from a very bad recording on a mixed tape, I immediately fell in love. After hearing much better recordings, my love for them grew substantially.Once I could understand what Glenn Danzig was singing about, I appreciated the songs even more. He has a distinct voice, cool imagination, fascinating ideas, and a way with words. Strangely, the Misfits' album, Static Age, was released almost twenty years after it was recorded. With just 30 hours of studio time, they put together an album that contains songs that changed the punk rock landscape. The album was recorded in 1978, and, because they had trouble finding a record label who wanted it, was released in 1995. It was first found in the box set, then, about a year later on an album of its own, with a bonus song. The album art for Static Age is rather macabre, and very much in keeping with the distinctly creepy aesthetic the Misfits used on so much of their t-shirt graphics and artwork over the years. The Crimson Ghost skull is an iconic punk rock symbol that almost everyone recognizes because it is so visually memorable and stunning.  The Misfits brought a brand new sound with creative, spooky imagery to the music world. They even had a fan club, the Fiend Club, that they used to market their products, which was an uncommon practice, and a great idea. Uniquely haunting, the Misfits have been, and continue to be, the backbone of punk rock.

I had the joy of covering the Misfits turbulent times in the 70s, 80s, and 90s with all the innocent fun + mean-spirited legal chicanery I could unearth. This will include yarns about WCW, Static Age, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the creation of Legacy of Brutality, The Box Set, and Jerry and Doyle stealing Danzig's Samhain skateboards FROM UNDERNEATH GLENN'S BACK PORCH WHEN HE WASN'T AROUND BECAUSE THE ANZALONE PARENTS WERE LIKE "WHATEVER!". Today we get to catch up with Ethan Moses from Cameradactyl. I hadn't spoken to Ethan since November 2019 but always followed his work. When he was running a recent project I couldn't help but be interested. Ethan has been playing with "afghan" cameras as they call them, huge 20x24 bits of technology. Not only that but he's been using the ra4 process to make his own version of instant positive prints! Ethan's personality always shines through, a man who can't stop playing and inventing. My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 172 of photography insights. This is the show that interviews people from the photography world. Today we get to talk about documentary photography and about subject that is worth you knowing about. When I first approached Matilde Simas about her work I was interested in her approach and how she worked given the difficult subject. So to better explain Matilde is a documentary photographer from Boston in the USA. Matilde is a graduate of psychology, a humanitarian (founded Capture Humuanity which we discuss) , parent and photographer. The work is all about human rights and has had her work across galleries around the world. Matilde herself is a lovely person and the work is about careful thought of representing this subject matter, It's been achieved with some class, dignity and respect of the survivors of trafficking. Trafficking is one of the subjects we have heard about but don't always know much about. There maybe some sad parts to the interview as it's pretty emotional stuff hearing about this, but I urge you to carry on. You can see more of her work and the countries she has been to on her website and this will provide a better focus of the problems in that area. It's not something that is happening in third world countries either, it happens everywhere as you will hear! We also approach the topic of the Massai warriors and female genital modification too, which again is another human right issue in many countries. Having choice is not always clear or straight forward, despite the health concerns. So in this one: support, shelters & psychological help NGO's vulnerability forced labour, marriage and servants cybersex re-trafficking FGM Massai customs portraiture Links Website - https://www.matildesimas.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/mattie_simas/ Friends of the show Steve at Chroma - Find out more about his range here https://kosmofoto.com/2022/02/chroma-cameras-unveils-new-medium-format-models-and-new-camera-shutter-plans/ For all your c41 developing needs - https://filmdev.co.uk/ Great and affordable zines from Static Age - https://www.staticage.co.uk/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/photography-insights/message

Sit back and relax because we're starting a series on one of our favorite bands, the Misfits, and a plethora of films, magazines, and celebrities that inspired Misfits songs. On this episode we got into a wide range of topics... the Misfits early days and the Cough/Cool single, Famous Monsters of Filmland, Hollywood Babylon, and other sleazy literature. The cursed film, The Misfits, from 1960 starring Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable, who would both be dead within a short time after filming. We ponder Who Killed Marilyn? with Static Age and Legacy of Brutality, Suicide's Ghost Rider, Wendy O. Williams and anger in punk rock. Plan 9 Records and the films of Ed Wood, most notably Plan 9 from Outer Space from 1959 - the inspiration behind Tim Burton's Ed Wood film from 1994 - and the cast of characters Criswell, Tor Johnson, Bela Lugosi, and Vampira. We also get into how Maila Nurmi aka Vampira inspired not only the Misfits but others in the punk scene as one of the very first goth horror hostesses, inspiring Elvira as well. After our discussion of The Crimson Ghost and Cyclotrode X is where our discussion pauses for this week, until we continue next week with Part II - Horror Business! Over the last few years I have always wanted to do a christmas special which would have to be different. After rummaging around my mind I finally came up with a plan and invited a couple of analogue shooting friends on to the show. So this will break off for the normal interview style and will focus on the world of analogue and christmas obviously. I'm pleased to invite Eoghan Hennessey (prounounced Owen) and of course I messed that up several times. Also from the world of silvergrain and film we have the esteemed Christopher Osborne. Both guests are great film shooters, active in our UK film group but also fun to talk to, hence why they are here. If you are ready for the show, it's themed around the 3 ghosts, past; present and the future, meaning we all cover an element each. So we will be talking about what we miss, what we want and expect in the future! My name is Andrew Walmsley and your listening to episode 164 of photography insights. This is the show that interviews people from the photography world. One day I was sending hello messages to people that had recently followed me on Instagram. I usually check out their images and websites, so I can decide if I'm going to follow their work. As you imagine I follow a lot of people and try to keep a small number of close people to engage with. After Emilio Cresciani followed me I was intrigued and after seeing his projects I messaged him through Instagram and here we are! Emilio is an artist from Australia who sees beauty in elements all around us. It was fun talking to Emilio for his laid back personality as you will soon find out. He's a caring person too who teaches people with disabilities and worked in care previously as well. What's even more interesting is his project based work - like "remains of the day". A great project looking at waste and how humans are affecting this world. When talking about his oil slicks, we are looking at what comes out the ground is driping back in to the ground. Don't get me started on his car screen's too, buying over 30 of these and making art out of these. Honestly he's able to see patterns and something interesting and use different photography processes to make art. As we finish the conversation we talk about awards and competitions, then finally memories of his grandad. So in this one look out for: - recycle + waste - negative consequences - metallic paper - shooting roadside - rain - safety glass - iphone vs photograms - making a lightbox - working with ice Links Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/emilio_08/ Website - http://emiliocresciani.com/about-emilio Friends of the show Steve at Chroma - Find out more about his new cute & small pin hole camera at https://chroma.camera For all your c41 developing needs - https://filmdev.co.uk/ Great and affordable zines from Static Age - https://www.staticage.co.uk/ Review You may have seen on social media recently, I posted the latest iTunes review. It certainly made me laugh its a pretty bad one but everyone is entitled to an opinion so here goes. "Don't bother" Worst interviewer in history. Mumbles. Interrupts. Wouldn't know an intelligent question if it fell on him. All I can say is, whatever you are doing now, just stop. Go leave a review and help me cancel this out. I can handle criticism, but we all know the statements are incorrect. I'm not the worst interviewer, just one of them, oh well you have to laugh. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/photography-insights/message

Alright I'm going to keep this description short and sweet, like a good Misfits song. They're the quintessential horror pop band. Glenn Danzig is the original lead singer and is a wild m-fer and after cycling through all the available musicians in the Queens punk scene, just decided to do his own thing. Static Age (this freakin album) was mostly recorded in 1978 at C.I. Recordings, but it was too friggin scary and raw for the record execs to understand, so they just released the songs into a bunch of comps and E.P.s instead. Cut to 1996. The Misfits are finally getting some cred. They release a boxset with a bunch of other shit and most of this album and decided "what the fuck, let's just release the whole damn thing" and so they finally released Static Age in it's entirety for the first time in 1997, a full nineteen years after it was recorded. No wonder these guys are so violent. Killing the Business Wrestling Podcast!

I really do enjoy episodes like this one. The Static Age joins KGP and myself. Madd Maxx Morrison and River the Sickopath talks about what is going on in their wrestling careers and musical projects. Personal note..Being able to go off script and shoot the shit with bad asses in the business is really cool.
