Michael Kastelic in conversation with David https://www.facebook.com/thecynics/ American garage rock band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The band, at the time consisting of guitarist Gregg Kostelich, drummer Bill Von Hagen, vocalist Michael Kastelic who joined in 1985, bass player Steve Magee, and keyboardist Becky Smith (later founder of New York City's Bellwether gallery), debuted with their first album, Blue Train Station in 1986. Many of their songs "carry the torch" for other favorite bands as cover songs or tributes. They underwent a number of lineup changes culminating in 1989's Rock and Roll album. They formed their own independent record label called Get Hip Records in 1986.
Joe Emery started on the bottom rung of a political consulting firm when he was hired as a runner right out of school. He learned from some of the greats like Mark McKinnon, host of Showtime's ‘The Circus,' and famed political commentator, Paul Begala, before founding his own firm in 2020, Emery Research, where he focuses on insights supporting communication, branding and policy issues. And while some know Joe the communications researcher, many others know Joe as the singer and lead guitarist for 60's-style garage rock band, The Ugly Beats, based in Austin, TX. They have 5 albums out on Pittsburgh-based, Get Hip Records, and Spotify listenership numbers to which many of us can only aspire. Joe shares his research and music journeys with characteristic modesty. We also discuss the studio vs. live performance and why the future of research is simultaneously awesome and terrifying.

Yeah well, this episode was supposed to be released first, but it ended up being second, and honestly... nobody knows what day it is anyways, so it doesn't matter. Moving on! My friend Barbara is in her native country of Spain in the Capital city of Madrid currently. She has been there since her mom passed away from Cancer in February. Barbara and I met in Pittsburgh as fellow yoga teachers, and she runs a company call Get Hip Records. A super cool place where you can download tracks, visit events ( online currently), and get your hands on some cool records for your music isolation needs. I wanted to chat her up about what life has been like in Spain, the general feeling of the population, and also are things coming back to life and in what order? We also chat about what she is watching in isolation (Which is a burning question in my mind) Tune in! Where should we go next? ~M

Legendary Punk Photographer Theresa Kereakes had a show at Get Hip Records in Pittsburgh PA. One look at her photos and one conversation i knew i had to chat w her. She documented the LA punk scene in the very early days and got the photos and saw the shows and knew the people that any fan of that era would kill to have shot, witnessed and been down with. This conversation is unedited and sprawling and it touches on the likes of Nietzche, Patty Smith, LA Noir as well as many other punk rock thisses and thats. The Podcast here between Jaybo and Theresa Kereakes was recorded on a macbook pro in the live venue and art space provided by Gregg Kostelich of Get Hip Records. Enjoy! J
