Marsha Scarbrough worked in Hollywood for 20 years as an Assistant Director on major feature films and prime-time television shows. In 2006, she retired and moved to Sante Fe, New Mexico, a place she thought would be her “forever home.” In Sante Fe, she used her small nest egg to purchase two houses as investments. Unfortunately the Great Recession of 2007-2009 rendered her real estate near worthless. By 2010, she was bankrupt, in foreclosure, and owed money to a friend. Marsha believed she could not live comfortably in the U.S. but might be able to do it overseas. She desired a large European city but didn't think it was affordable. A visit to a friend in Madrid, Spain changed her mind. She soon learned that life on a budget in Madrid was possible. In 2017, at the age of 70, Marsha left Santa Fe for Madrid and hasn't looked back. Learn more about Marsha's journey to the large cosmopolitan city of Madrid, Spain on Episode 199 of Retire There with Gil & Gene. Learn more about Marsha on her website, MarshaScarbrough.com. While today is all about a long weekend in Madrid, Thomas and Trevor go on their usual tangents to bring you yet another information-drenched and fun-filled episode! We begin with our love for gin and tonic ice cubes and by explaining how today's episode relates to many of our other Travel Stories. Then, Trevor walks us through his recent airport lounge experiences, how food and drinks compare, how to maximize your points redemptions, and taking short trips in first class versus longer trips in economy. Trevor then explains why he had to drop Mumbai from his Madrid trip itinerary, what you need to be cautious of when walking the streets of Madrid, and the entertainment options that are available in Spain's capital for both kids and adults. To end, we discuss the evolution of Lufthansa's first-class (cheers!) and what we like and dislike about recent amenity additions and removals, and we take a closer look at the now-unretired Airbus A340-600. Key Points From This Episode: [00:30] Gin & tonic ice cubes, and how today's Travel Story links to many previous episodes.  [01:52] Why taking cheaper flights from the Maldives is not as common as it used to be.  [03:30] Trevor's interesting and most recent airport lounge experiences.  [06:12] Comparing the food and drink quality of the various lounges that Trevor visited.   [07:40] Virgin Atlantic's common flight times and standard fleet make up, and some advice on how to maximize points redemption.   [10:32] Short trips in first class and transatlantic flights in economy.  [12:07] Understanding Trevor's Dallas-London-Mumbai-Madrid itinerary.  [20:44] Madrid: Spain's lovely capital.  [26:50] A cautionary pickpocketing tale from Madrid's 5th Avenue equivalent.  [32:20] Activities for kids, Museo Nacional del Prado, and exploring food and drinks in Madrid.  [37:28] Today's if “you say it, you sip it” phrase is “Lufthansa first-class”. Unitech Training Academy is a growing education institution that was originally founded by Noah's mother, Deanna Head, in 1997, initially offering a Certified Nursing Assistant program. Today, the institution has six campuses across the state, online classes, and two early learning centers in Lafayette and Alexandria. Noah is an advocate for all post-secondary educational offerings and is active with One Acadiana's Workforce Development Strategy to ensure that local employers can find skilled workers that fit market needs. Unitech staff partner with their students at Unitech to ensure that the soft skills needed to stay employed are learned while training for their new career. "There is a universal truth among all hiring managers: they want to hire people who make their lives easier, not harder. So when you're interviewing for a job, your goal is not to tell them how great you are. Your job is to convince them that you are the answer to their problems and you'll make their job easier." The majority of students at Unitech are studying allied health field courses. Classes offered include Dental Assisting, EKG/Phlebotomy technician, Medical Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, medical billing and coding, as well as Massage Therapy, IT Technician, IT Support Specialist, and Early Childhood Ancillary Certificate. At any given time there are approximately 1100 students enrolled in what Noah calls a "rolling program of enrollment" that allows students to start classes each Monday. Noah's mom, Deanna, created this model to allow students to start a new career and obtain an education as soon as possible. Unitech held its first graduation for the Unitech Leadership and Development Institute in October 2023. Noah is active in the community and serves as President of the Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana. He was honored in 2022 as an Acadiana Top 20 under 40 Award Recipient. Noah Brandon spoke of his understanding of the importance of intentionality when dealing with others. Most of us carry around fears and insecurities, and it can show in our actions if people don't know us. Especially as you move up the career ladder. Our insecurities can shape how people size us up. We may be shy but it can come off as aloofness. People may think, "You're the guy in charge....you're not supposed to be insecure!' He believes that if you look at people with love instead of fear, it really changes the whole dynamic. "If I look at others and give them the benefit of the doubt.....it becomes so much easier to interact with people." This week, the Bigger, Better World podcast takes a trip to Spain, talking to International Living Spain Editor Sally Pederson about her recent scouting trip to the center of the country and the city of Madrid—Spain's political…and gastronomic capital. Hailing originally from Canada, Sally's been an expat for years, having started her overseas life in Costa Rica before making the move to Spain. She had a list of non-negotiables for her new home: efficient public transport, somewhere with a beach, and a good international airport nearby. For Sally, the city of Barcelona checked all the boxes, and she based herself there. But, as she explains in the podcast, it's so easy, comfortable, and convenient to travel in Europe, that she's not tied to one city. In fact, she sees Barcelona foremost as a base for her extensive travels.“Compared to North America,' Sally says, ‘it's so cheap to travel around Europe, and it's one of the things that I love. So it's very easy and convenient. There are so many trains every day, so many flights every day. So whether internationally, within Europe, or even just within Spain, I can't even tell you how many trains leave Madrid or Barcelona or any major city. There's so many every single day.'And that means she can explore and enjoy everything that Spain has to offer, whether that's in her home city of Barcelona, or farther afield. That's how she came to learn about the city of Madrid and its unbeatable cuisine and dining options. Who wouldn't like to eat at the capital city's oldest restaurant—which has been serving up local dishes since 1725? Or share a range of tapas with friends at a sidewalk café, or indulge in seafood paella with at Casa Labra—one of Ernest Hemingway's favorite joints in the city?In her article for International Living magazine, and in her discussion with podcast host, Jim Santos, Sally explores what it is that makes dining, drinking, and ultimately…living in Spain such a rewarding experience for discerning Europhile expats. She paints an evocative picture of centuries-old restaurants; seasonal, regional fare; delectable tapas; unhurried atmospheres, and a commitment to the art of good living in two Spanish cities that are unrivaled for energy and sophistication. Read Sally's article here.Join host, Jim Santos, as he meets Sally Pederson in the latest episode of Bigger, Better World. If you're enjoying the podcast, we would really appreciate it if you could leave us a review on your favorite podcast platform: https://lovethepodcast.com/internationalliving.Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube

Our vision is to help solve the housing crisis while protecting the planet. - Chris • We are rolling out the production of hydrogen, but we're working with partners like CEMEX to say how do we use it in the right setting? So how do you use it to produce cement? How do you use it to produce steel or for transport? - Tim • We can only tackle the challenges our industry are facing, and I want to emphasise on that,  if we industry players collaborate to build a better future. - Mateo • We're continually looking at both the physical product and the carbon content of that product. And until you understand the carbon content, it's very difficult to drive change, to improve that, or to be able to track it and understand exactly what level of carbon is, in our instance being put in our buildings. - Chris • It's a very tight margin business. Therefore, when you look at cement or steel and the like to suddenly introduce a much higher energy cost because you're using hydrogen, not natural gas or whatever else is nigh on impossible. So we as technology providers have to provide the solution that makes it affordable. - Tim • I think the paces are also a little bit different. There's obviously a lot of innovations in terms of materials that are happening, but not necessarily there is an adoption on the job site right on construction. - Mateo • It's very inefficient and obviously materials are a large part of the construction budget. So from 40 to 60% depending on the country and it's highly inefficient. It's actually one of the biggest  reasons for delays in construction. - Mateo About Our Guests: Mateo Zimmermann Mateo Zimmermann is Investment Manager at CEMEX Ventures, responsible for the Corporate Venture Capital Investments in startups in the Construction technology space. Before joining CEMEX Ventures, Mateo worked at The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) from 2013 to 2017 as a Management Consultant, where he promoted to Project Leader. He previously worked at StepOne as an Advisor for startups and corporates in their Digital Strategies. Before that he worked as an Investment Analyst in Private Equity and Corporate Debt at the Asset Management division of Arcano. He also worked for UBS and Electrolux Group. Mateo has a double degree in Engineering and Management. He graduated as MSc in Industrial Engineering and Management at Technische Universität Berlin (Germany) and obtained a Master in Management at ESCP Europe (Paris, France). He was born in Madrid (Spain) and has both the Spanish and German citizenship. CEMEX Ventures The global economy has endured a tough 2022. With decades-high inflation sapping post-lockdown spending and pushing central banks to hike borrowing costs at an unprecedented clip to bring it under control. Yet despite poor projections and an overall decline in VC funding, 2023 represents an optimistic year for startups in the ConTech sector. Predictions point to trailblazing new technologies and business models entering the industry to improve sustainability and reduce the global carbon footprint. That's why CEMEX Ventures, the corporate venture capital and open innovation unit of CEMEX, goes beyond simply investing. Since 2017, CEMEX Ventures develops relationships between entrepreneurs, investors, CEMEX, and other corporations in order to revolutionize the construction industry as we know it today. Chris Bone Chris is CEO and co-founder of Modulous, the construction technology company that was formed to address the global housing crisis while reducing the climate impact of real estate development. Chris has 25 years' experience in the construction industry, having managed businesses across consulting, manufacturing, and construction. At Modulous he is responsible for all aspects of the company's growth and development in the UK, Europe, and the USA. Modulous Modulous was founded in 2018 by a team of construction, technology, and manufacturing specialists to create an asset-light model for the design and delivery of sustainable homes. Its integrated digital and physical product suite is designed to make the whole construction cycle - from feasibility right through to delivery on site - more efficient and effective. Its software platform generates optimised schemes based on a Kit of Parts, which is manufactured within the supply chain, removing the need for dedicated factories. The Kit of Parts is a standardised set of assemblies providing a high-performance net-zero modular housing system, delivered in half the time of traditional housebuilding, with 70% less waste and 60% lower embodied carbon. Modulous has offices in London and Seattle and is the first globally scalable technology solution to address both the worldwide housing crisis and escalating climate emergency. Tim Davies Tim has held Chief Executive & Board roles across a variety of sectors including green-tech, retail & service-providers working with both corporates and start-ups. He has a proven track record of identifying and delivering new business opportunities and considerable value creation including 20 years' experience working for PE & VC-backed businesses. Now, as CEO of HiiROC, Tim and his team have developed a technology with a potentially transformational impact on Climate Change.  HiiROC A transformational new technology for affordable, clean hydrogen production using world leading proprietary plasma technology. HiiROC's Thermal Plasma Electrolysis (TPE) uses renewable (or grid) electricity to split hydrocarbons (biomethane, flare gas, natural gas, propane, etc) into zero-emission Hydrogen and inert solid Carbon Black (i.e. without producing CO2). TPE works at a fraction of the cost of Water Electrolysis, without the CO2 emissions of Steam Methane Reforming and is scalable from micro onsite (saving transport & storage costs) to industrial scale. The highly versatile technology is being piloted globally in 2023 across the hydrogen sectors from industrial decarbonisation to transport to grid blending and power management whilst also being used for flare gas mitigation and CO2 reduction using biomethane. In this segment, Cardinal Sarah is talking about the onslaught to purity of heart through our sight. I immediately think of Time Square in New York City, where is it just flashing lights and signs everywhere.  We were recently in Madrid Spain over the summer and in the busy downtown district it was exactly the same! So much noise through our eyes! There is a subversive vibe to everything we watch especially with sexual overtones. Pornography is rampant in our country. We are often dazzled by what we see and we feel like we are having a heightened experience, but the reality is we are being consumed by the noise which attempts in many different ways to drowned out the voice of God VISUALLY. Our inner dwelling place is being contaminated by this onslaught of imagery that is made available to us. There seems to be a serious lack of chastity and self-control which is increased by our desires to take in what is visually appealing. The subtlety with which sexuality is being exploited is no longer that subtle. We are creating a society that objectives other human beings for self gratification versus the beauty by which God has created them.

Alfredo is also Co-Director for the Centre for Educational and Developmental Sciences.   Listen in to learn about the current state of education in Hong Kong and how creativity is perceived in the Chinese educational system. Then, Alfredo shares his research on early childhood creativity in Hong Kong kindergarteners, detailing the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western education.   “We are making progress, schools are slowly learning, teachers are slowly improving and getting more and more pedagogical ideas, but there is still a lot of work to do.” – Dr. Alfredo Bautista   Alfredo highlights the roles of structure and freedom in early childhood curriculums and shares his fascinating opinion on whether kindergarten should be play-based or academics-based.    Plus, the trio shines light on the importance of recognizing your values as a parent and being able to decide what type of education your child needs, as they do in Hong Kong - yet in the US, there are barriers to choosing your child's educational environment. Tune in to learn more!   Alfredo's Tips for Teachers and Parents (Preschool/Kindergarten): Creativity emerges when there is some sort of framework. It's important to learn how to design activities that provide a framework and give children the freedom to complete that framework in different ways. Design activities that require exploration and experimentation. In this compelling episode, Maria McHargue joins us to talk about what it means for her to be faithful as a Christian who manages chronic pain. Suffering can feel unbearable at times, but God invites us to rely on Him and His love- even when nothing makes sense. Maria encourages us to anchor ourselves in Scripture as we claim God as our Rock, Refuge, and Rest amid life's painful struggles. Wherever you are, you are not alone. About the Speaker:Maria is originally from New Jersey and has been a disciple for over 20 years. She has a Masters in Social Work as well as her clinical license and worked as a foster care social worker for several years before going into the full-time ministry. Maria and her husband Cash have been married for over 13 years and have two kids- Isabella who is 12 and Hunter who is 10. She has served in ministry for the last 15 years in Baltimore Maryland, Madrid Spain, and Boston where she currently serves as a Women's Ministry Leader in the South Coastal Region. Her life took a radical turn while living in Spain when she was diagnosed with a spinal tumor that left her unable to walk and in tremendous pain. After a quick flight home and two surgeries later she was partially paralyzed and her journey to relearn to walk began. She still deals with chronic pain and fatigue but she is passionate about women's ministry and inspiring others to persevere through life's trials. Maria is grateful for opportunities to share her story and help women grow in their trust in God. Episode Notes:Psalm 94:18-19- When I said, “My foot is slipping!” Your unfailing love, O Eternal One, held me up.
