You may know Crispin Hellion Glover as an eccentric character actor from classics films like Back to the Future, River's Edge, and, of course, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. But he's also a committed independent filmmaker.Earlier this month, he attended the press screening for his latest movie, No! You're Wrong. Or: Spooky Action at a Distance at Chicago's Music Box Theatre--where he also performed a half-hour historical slideshow about the art and science of rat-catching for a handful of assembled press. After the show, Ian sat down with the writer/director/star for a wide-ranging interview about his refusal to make his films available digitally; his relationship with David Lynch; the history of Surrealism; artificial intelligence in the Arts, and much more.As for the movie at hand, it would require several hours and a couple of re-watches to accurately describe (and probably not even then). The best Ian can muster is, "It's like There Will Be Blood meets Cloud Atlas, set in the Land of Make-Believe".Chicagoans! At just 17 years old, Bruce Lisker was branded a murderer after being accused and convicted of the violent killing of his mother. He would go on to spend the next 26 years of his life in prison, until a federal judge finally overturned his conviction in 2009. Bruce's exoneration might never have happened without the investigative efforts of LA Times journalists Scott Glover and Matt Lait and LAPD officer Jim Gavin. In this episode, Michael Semanchik speaks with this trio of truth-seekers about their involvement in the Lisker case. Initially skeptical, each of them set out to poke holes in Bruce's claims, but as their investigations progressed, the evidence increasingly pointed to his innocence. They share details of their research, explaining how discoveries of both ignored and manipulated evidence in the decades-old case raised red flags in the original investigation, ultimately bringing the truth to light. Matt Lait is Vice President of CNN's investigative team. Previously, he worked at the Los Angeles Times where he was an investigative reporter, city editor and ran the local investigations team. Scott Glover is a reporter on the CNN Investigates team. Glover came to CNN with 20 years of experience at the Los Angeles Times where he covered the LAPD, federal courts and law enforcement agencies. Jim Gavin retired from the Los Angeles Police Department in August 2020, as the head of Operations Valley Bureau Homicide. He served 32 years with the LAPD in a wide variety of assignments. In this episode of Everyday Injustice, host David Greenwald talks with former federal prosecutor Jared Fishman, author of Fire on the Levee: The Murder of Henry Glover and the Search for Justice after Hurricane Katrina. Fishman revisits the 2005 killing of Henry Glover by New Orleans police officers in the chaotic days following Hurricane Katrina, a case he investigated and brought to trial early in his career. Twenty years later, he reflects on what the tragedy revealed about institutional breakdown and systemic failure in American policing. Fishman, who now leads the Justice Innovation Lab, discusses how Katrina exposed not just a natural disaster, but “a disaster of real human proportions.” The aftermath of Glover's killing, he explains, underscored the collapse of accountability in law enforcement—when “all forms of accountability were crushed” and a culture of silence protected wrongdoing. His work later helped spur major reforms in the New Orleans Police Department, but he cautions that the department's progress remains incomplete. The conversation also traces how awareness of systemic police misconduct has evolved since those early post-Katrina years. Before Ferguson and George Floyd, Fishman says, most Americans viewed police abuse as isolated incidents—“bad apples” rather than symptoms of a broken system. Today, he argues, there's wider recognition that true reform means confronting the institutional incentives, recruitment models, and training failures that perpetuate injustice across jurisdictions. Finally, Fishman links these lessons to current debates over federal militarization of cities. Drawing on his experience in both war zones and American courtrooms, he warns that the sight of National Guard troops in U.S. streets should “alarm everyone,” calling it evidence of “how fragile our institutions are.” Real public safety, he concludes, depends on addressing root causes—poverty, mental health, and inequality—not on “arresting more people” or treating social problems through the criminal legal system.

7. The Indispensables at Trenton: Crossing the Ice-Filled Delaware River Author: Patrick O'Donnell Book Title: The Indispensables: The Diverse Soldier Mariners Who Shaped the Country, Formed the Navy, and Rowed Washington across the Delaware On Christmas night 1776, Washington ordered his 2,400 men to cross the ice-filled Delaware River to attack Trenton. This "mission impossible" was only achieved due to the skill of the Marbleheaders in handling the Durham and flat-bottom boats, as all other attempts to cross the river that night failed. Their unique expertise, developed while fishing the Grand Banks, allowed them to manage the difficult currents and ice flows. The regiment was a diverse, unified team, including free men of color such as Caesar Gloverand Oliver Cromwell. After crossing in the nor'easter, the troops—many lacking shoes—marched toward Trenton. Glover's regiment was in the vanguard, marching down the river road. They secured the crucial Assunpink Creek bridge, ensuring the captured Hessians under Johann Rall had no means of retreat, leading to a decisive double envelopment victory. Days later, during the Second Battle of Trenton at Assunpink Creek, the remaining Marbleheaders held the bridge against repeated assaults by elite British grenadiers, allowing Washington to execute a feint and escape north toward Princeton. 8. The Legacy and Sacrifice of the Marbleheaders: From Bankruptcy to Monument Author: Patrick O'Donnell Book Title: The Indispensables: The Diverse Soldier Mariners Who Shaped the Country, Formed the Navy, and Rowed Washington across the Delaware Following the Trenton campaign, many Marbleheaders, exhausted and with enlistments expired, returned home, including John Glover, whose wife was ill. Marblehead suffered immense devastation post-war; the prosperous town went "bust," the industry declined, and many leading men went bankrupt. The sacrifice was tragic, resulting in nearly 400 widows by the war's end, with many bodies lost at sea. Washington eventually entreated Glover to return, promoting him to general, and Glover continued fighting until 1782. Today, the Marbleheaders' story is visible through remaining historic landmarks: John Glover's house has a plaque, the Jeremiah Lee mansion serves as part of the Marblehead Museum, and notable figures are buried in Old Burial Hill. In Trenton, a statue of Marbleheader John Russell is displayed, holding an oar to symbolize the famous Delaware crossing. Henry Knox paid tribute to the regiment, stating he wished Congress had seen the men of Marblehead alone stand forward to lead the army across the perilous river to achieve the victory at Trenton.
1. The Prosperous Mariner Community of Marblehead and its Revolutionary Leadership Author: Patrick O'Donnell Book Title: The Indispensables: The Diverse Soldier Mariners Who Shaped the Country, Formed the Navy, and Rowed Washington across the Delaware Marblehead was the second-largest port city in Massachusetts and a thriving cosmopolitan community, with a population estimated at about 5,000. Its economy relied heavily on fishing, specifically codfish from the Grand Banks, which were salted and traded globally via a massive merchant fleet. This commerce fostered some of the wealthiest men in the colonies. Key leaders included Jeremiah Lee, a man of enormous wealth and influence, and John Glover, a scrappy, stocky, red-haired self-made man who started as a cobbler and built a successful fleet of ships. These men, along with Elbridge Gerry, were prominent members of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress, sitting on crucial committees of supply and safety. They leveraged their trade routes to bring in vital resources, such as gunpowder and cannon, securing Spain as the colonies' "first foreign aid" in 1774. Glover led the Marblehead Regiment, which was notably diverse, including African Americans like Caesar Glover and Romeo, who sailed and fought together.
