Alan Tyler in conversation with David Eastaugh http://www.alantyler.com/ https://alantyler.bandcamp.com/merch/how-to-never-have-a-hit-the-confessions-of-an-unsuccessful-singer-songwriter Alan Tyler is the singer of The Rockingbirds, the chaotic, swashbuckling country-rockers who galloped haphazardly into the 90s Camden indie scene, got signed, appeared on Top Of The Pops, went head to head with Nirvana at Reading ‘92, and produced, eventually, four albums of unsurpassed Americana. From DIY/punk beginnings, in 1980 Tyler arrived at the experimentalists' haven of the London Musicians Collective and was soon playing swingy pop at Bernie Rhodes' Club Left, sharing the agitpop aspirations of Scritti Politti and other Rough Trade acts before being there at the dawn of Creation Records. At various times he's been a choirboy, a fanzine writer, a Young Socialist, a tap dancer, a polytechnic philosopher, a cycle dispatch rider, a news-monitoring video pirate, an ill-suited civil servant, and a Deptford Creek dwelling river poet. Long after his Heavenly Recordings heyday, Tyler remains a stalwart of London's roots music scene: a critically recognised singer-songwriter who has never had a single hit.

pWotD Episode 2674: Oasis (band) Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 515,435 views on Tuesday, 27 August 2024 our article of the day is Oasis (band).Oasis are an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1991. The group initially consisted of Liam Gallagher (lead vocals), Paul Arthurs (guitar), Paul McGuigan (bass guitar) and Tony McCarroll (drums), with Liam asking his older brother Noel Gallagher (lead guitar, vocals) to join as a fifth member a few months later to finalise their formation. Noel became the de facto leader of the group and took over the songwriting duties for the band's first four albums. They are characterised as one of the defining and most globally successful groups of the Britpop genre. Oasis signed to independent record label Creation Records in 1993 and released their record-setting debut album Definitely Maybe (1994), which topped the UK Albums Chart and quickly became the fastest-selling debut album in British history at the time. The following year they released (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995) with new drummer Alan White, in the midst of a highly publicised chart rivalry with peers Blur. Spending ten weeks at number one on the British charts, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? was also an international chart success and became one of the best-selling albums of all time, the fifth-best-selling album in the UK and the biggest-selling album in the UK of the 1990s. The Gallagher brothers featured regularly in tabloid newspapers throughout the 1990s for their public disputes and wild lifestyles. In 1996, Oasis performed two nights at Knebworth for an audience of 125,000 each time, the largest outdoor concerts in UK history at the time. In 1997, Oasis released their highly anticipated third studio album, Be Here Now, which became the fastest-selling album in UK chart history.Founder members Arthurs and McGuigan left in 1999 during the recording of the band's fourth studio album Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000). They were replaced by former Heavy Stereo guitarist Gem Archer on guitar and former Ride guitarist Andy Bell on bass. White departed in 2004, replaced by guest drummer Zak Starkey, and later by Chris Sharrock. Oasis released three more studio albums in the 2000s: Heathen Chemistry (2002), Don't Believe the Truth (2005) and Dig Out Your Soul (2008). The group abruptly disbanded in 2009 after the sudden departure of Noel Gallagher. The remaining members of the band continued under the name Beady Eye until their disbandment in 2014. Both Gallagher brothers have continued on to have successful solo careers. On 27 August 2024, Oasis announced that they would reform for performances in the UK and Ireland in the summer of 2025 during their Live '25 Tour.As of 2024, Oasis have sold over 75 million records worldwide, making them one of the best-selling music artists of all time. They are among the most successful acts in the history of the UK Singles Chart and the UK Albums Chart, with eight UK number-one singles and eight UK number-one albums. The band also achieved three Platinum albums in the US. They won 17 NME Awards, nine Q Awards, four MTV Europe Music Awards and six Brit Awards, including one in 2007 for Outstanding Contribution to Music and one for the "Best Album of the Last 30 Years" for (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. They were also nominated for two Grammy Awards. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:56 UTC on Wednesday, 28 August 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Oasis (band) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Amy.

Oasis in the UK are more than just rock royalty. They are the foul-mouthed, big riff, council estate kids with unibrows and bad attitudes that helped lift the UK out of it's 1980's/Thatcherism malaisse and into the Cool Britannia of the 1990s. Out was the doom and gloom of American grunge, in were melodic songs that kids could relate to. Anthems like Rock N Roll Star, Columbia and Cigarettes and Alcohol spoke directly to the young generation who were anxious to make their own mark on the world. Led by the songwriting and riff borrowing of Noel Gallagher and the sheer strength of the vocals of his younger brother Liam, Oasis debut Definitely Maybe became the fastest selling debut album in the UK at the time. However, in the US, though Oasis debut hit the charts and eventually went platinum, the band never took off to the heights they would enjoy in the UK and around the world. Maybe it was Creation Records lack of solid backing by the US record industry or maybe it was the brothers snarling and nasty attitudes (and those unibrows) that turned enough people off during the age of grunge that would soon give way to softer sounds like Hootie and the Blowfish. But Oasis were the spokesmen of their generation in the UK and knew who to borrow from (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, T Rex, The Jam) to make a big, bright, loud sound that would have them headline Knebworth just 2 years after the release of this debut in front of 250,000 people over 2 nights. Oasis are also the masters of the b-side (a lost art in the US) and as CD singles with 4 tracks on them were all the rage, Oasis hit the playlists and sales from singles as well as anyone in the UK. So relive the big hits (Live Forever & Supersonic), enjoy the album tracks (Slide Away, Bring It On Down) and unearth some b-sides as we celebrate Definitely Maybe as it turns 30. Silver Biplanes is the retro-futurist band led by a husband-and-wife duo of indie veterans - bassist/songwriter Tim Vass (formerly of early Creation Records heroes Razorcuts and '90s psych-pop combos Red Chair Fadeaway and Dandelion Wine) and singer Vanessa Vass (formerly of '90s indie poppers The Melons). Their upcoming second album, Traveling By Candlelight, will be out May 24th on Old Bad Habits/wiaiwya. As evidenced by the lead single "Radiogram," the LP is a heady mix of choruses, hooks and catchy tunes in which you'll hear traces of psychedelia, post-punk, krautrock and more. Tim and Vanessa stop by to chat about the new record, their careers, their music, marriage and family, colouring books, why Vanessa can't touch Tim's record collection, and, of course, the topic on hand. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of songwriting visionaries who came to prominence in the 1990s with well respected indie bands, and who both have vital new music out now: Jason Lytle and Gruff Rhys. Lytle started making music under the name Grandaddy back in 1992. He was pro skateboarder who found a second passion in home recording, and as you'll hear in this chat, kind of stumbled upon some guys who helped him flesh out the sound into something both humble and grand. The first run of Grandaddy albums—including Under the Western Freeway and 2000's classic The Sophtware Slump—felt a bit like quieter, more heartfelt cousins to the music the Flaming Lips were making at the time. After that initial run, the band eventually split up, only to reform sporadically over the years. Lytle also recorded some really fascinating solo records while also time—as you'll hear—to try and leave the music world behind a little bit. But he's been called back to the Grandaddy world with a brand new album called Blue WAV, and it's everything you'd expect from him brain: a mixture of sweet sadness with fuzzy guitars and synths from another age. Check out “Cabin in my Mind” from Blue WAV right here. The other half of today's conversation is Gruff Rhys, who just released his 25th album overall in a career that has spanned 35 years and taken some fascinating turns. He's still probably best known as the frontman of the colorful, psych-leaning Welsh pop band Super Furry Animals, which was signed to the venerated Creation Records label back in the 1990s, and whose records and visuals always zigged when you thought they might zag—that's a compliment. For his solo work, Rhys has been genre-expansive to say the least, but his brand new record, Sadness Sets Me Free, is refreshingly straightforward pop. As you'll hear in this chat, it was recorded pretty quickly, without a lot of fuss. It doesn't sound miles away from the new Grandaddy album, really. Check out “Bad Friend” right here. As it turns out, these two toured together a million years ago, and each has fond memories of that time—a soccer match, a special parting gift, and more. They also chat about Lytle's preference to stay away from the madness of the big city, even as he lives perilously close to it once again as well as their tendency to make up words in their songs when the ones that exist just won't do. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Gruff Rhys and Jason Lytle for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great stuff at Talkhouse.com. Super excited to announce new guest, Mighty Joe Castro, to The Story!Based out of Philadelphia, PA, Ameripolitan rockabilly outfit, Mighty Joe Castro & The Gravamen is the latest musical project from accomplished collage artist and musician Mighty Joe Castro (ex-The Situation, The Lift Up). Influenced by 50's Rock and Roll and infused with post modern Easter eggs cribbed from old episodes of MTV's 120 Minutes, Mighty Joe Castro takes a modern, lyric driven approach to songwriting while The Gravamen layer on Jesus and Mary Chain-cover-Link Wray guitar atmosphere, booming doghouse bass and swinging beats. The quartet lurks at a crossroads where Sun Records and Creation Records meet.According to Joe Castro: “Our goal is to play original rock-n-roll, in the style of the pioneers, but update it lyrically and sonically. Take what we've learned, everything great that's come after and go apply it to that original sound. What if Buddy Holly had access to a stack of effects pedals and some Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds records? That's the ethos of the band.”Currently working on a new full length record, the band released the single Embers in the Ash in 2023. It's the first follow up to their 2020 debut full length album, Come On Angels. Both were recorded at Miner Street Recordings and produced by Brian McTear (Sharon Van Etten, Dr Dog, Dead Milkmen).  Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Paul Chastain co-founded Velvet Crush rock group. Signed by Alan McGee to his mythic British indie label Creation Records who gave the band's first and second albums, the latter, the seminal “Teenage Symphonies To God”, worldwide release. Paul's musical arc also includes path crossings with a handful of top-notch talent. He has been playing and singing alongside pal Matthew Sweet from the pre-”Girlfriend” days onward. Run-ins along the way with such pop music icons and ne'er-do-wells as Roger McGuinn, Mitch Easter, Susanna Hoffs, Stephen Duffy, Tommy Keene, Ami Onuki (Puffy Ami/Yumi). Drummer/producer John Louis Richardson has similar roots, brushes with greatness and dubious associations. Among them, Joey Molland's Badfinger, Tommy Keene, Gin Blossoms, Keene Brothers, Jay Bennett, Will Hoge. He still plays live and records with DIY power pop pioneers and long time friends, Shoes. John runs his Drum Farm Studio in Menomonie, Wisconsin. A major through-line for the album Ours & amp; Life-events shaped others due to the passing of longtime mutual friend and bandmate Tommy Keene. As an inspirational figure who opened for The Matthew Sweet band, toured with Velvet Crush, and played in Richardson's band, the impact of his loss was significant. This led to the inclusion of Keene's song “Baby Face” on the album, as well as aiding in the completion of the track “Can't Let Go (Oh Tommy)”.   Paul's Info https://www.instagram.com/smallish.square/ https://www.facebook.com/TheSmallSquare https://www.youtube.com/@TheSmallSquareGroup https://www.smallsquaremusic.com/ https://farmtolabelrecords.com/artists/the-small-square/

Welcome back to another search for the very worst album of all time, yes, it's Trve. Crvp. Pop!. Steve and Sam are back and are looking at My Beauty, the second solo album from former (and current) Dexy's Midnight Runners frontman, released on the 21st of September 1999.Rowland was one of the biggest stars in music in Britain in the 1980's, but after Dexy's split in 1987 he spiralled into depression and drug addiction and decided to quit music. After a spell living on the streets Rowland signed to Creation Records, home of Oasis, Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine and, of course, 3 Colours Red, and released a set of covers, with the lyrics changed to reflect his recent struggles. It should have been a triumphant comeback, but Rowland decided to portray himself on the front cover wearing a dress and lingerie, much to the confusion of the UK music press, and then turn up fully made up and in a dress at the Reading Festival in 1999 a month before the album was released. It was a disaster and completely overshadowed the music on My Beauty. Rowland, it was reported, only sold 500 copies of the album and he became the punchline to many a joke at the time. But, 24 years on, does the music stand up? ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

A record containing songs of the rock, psychedelic, dah-dah, easy listening, country and movie soundtrack variety. One international reviewer called it an indie rock classic and two tracks appeared on the Charity Compilation Shoulder to Shoulder alongside tracks by Paul Weller, Ocean Colour Scene, Roger McGuinn (The Byrds), Robyn Hitchcock, Noel Gallagher, Pete Noone (Herman's Hermits) and Wishbone Ash. This collection was organised by David Quaife, whose brother Pete was the original bass player of the British rock legends The Kinks. Creation Records' Alan McGee even praised the album in question, even adding Hollywood stars like Matthew Modine, and Michael Keaton to the fan-base.

Death Of The High Street - "Synergy," a 2022 self-released single. Midlands-based post-punk band Death Of The High Street hit the scene last year with a very strong vote of confidence: their debut single was released by Creation Records empresario Alan McGee, on his new label named It's Creation Baby. Their latest single continues their reign of dark, driving, pulsating sound.  “Synergy is a mantra. A reminder that the collective struggle is more important than the individual," the band shared in a press statement. "We should remember, no matter the importance we place on the person, no matter how much the powers that be attempt to single us out and turn us into consumerist automations, we will only really know ourselves properly when we interact with those around us.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We go all the way back to the dawn of Creation for this one...that is, Creation Records.  This week, we celebrate Creation B.O. (Before Oasis) and the 69 amazing singles the classic UK indie released from their formation in 1983 through 1989. Creation's music first and art-for-art's-sake aesthetic not only produced some absolutely wonderful records, but has served as a source of inspiration for many indie labels that followed.  One such label is Canada's The Beautiful Music, founded by our special guest Lad Wally Salem in 2002.  TBM boasts a tremendous catalogue of indie pop, Post Mod and Janglewave, featuring many musicians with connections to not only Creation, but other seminal labels like Sarah, Postcard, Whaam! and Tangerine.  Wally is not only a lovely human being, but is extremely knowledgable with great stories and connections to the music.  His vision is simple: he just wants this beautiful music to be heard. The Art of Longevity

When Teenage Fanclub formed in 1989, times were unusual in music, and not in a good way. It was pre-grunge, pre-Britpop and the charts were still in the grip of mass-produced pop (much of it naff) as many 80s bands were struggling to remain relevant (Depeche Mode being the exception). Yet something was afoot across the musical axis of the Eastern Seaboard, Washington Seattle, and Glasgow. Maybe it was something to do with areas of high precipitation joining forces to rain on Stock, Aitken & Waterman's parade. The peak of Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr, Yo La Tengo, Jesus & Mary Chain, The Vaselines…and very much arriving at that time, The Fannies: “When we first arrived there wasn't really a scene, no context to speak of, we were working in a vacuum”. They were at the very beginning of the resurgence of guitar music - the age of Creation Records and Oasis, Sub Pop and Nirvana - a decade of legend making stories in which you'll find Teenage Fanclub playing a series of rather important cameos. The band consider themselves lucky on several counts. For one, they have never had a hit, no big signature song. And therefore, no albatross. From their earliest days, once they'd made an album, A Catholic Education, they felt as if they'd already made it - having created an album on their own terms - no label and no strings attached. How indie can you get? Except of course, the band had a good run with major labels, first with Geffen in the USA and then later with Columbia Records, after Sony Music had acquired most of Creation. Given their huge influence and reverence among their rock & roll peers, it's easy to ponder could/should/would Teenage Fanclub have been so much bigger, commercially speaking. “We did okay, just not compared to the likes of Nirvana”. But Teenage Fanclub never succumbed to music industry cliches. No massive rise to superstardom? No problem:“We weren't disappointed because we weren't planning to be the biggest band in the world. We're better off being thought of as underachievers”.And so no big dramas, no drug-fuelled implosions - not even much in the way of musical differences (though founding member and principal songwriter Gerrad Love departed pre the making of new album Endless Arcade). Other than that, the band is tantrum-free and as friendly as they were from the very beginning. Indeed, the essence of Teenage Fanclub can't be easily captured by lazy narratives about commercial or creative peaks, as such. Although they've made a trio of fine rock & roll albums in Bandwagonesque, Grand Prix and Songs From Northern Britain, the band has found equilibrium since 2005's Man Made - making consistently excellent albums every five years since, self-funded and always critically lauded:“We're not trying to pretend to be the band we were in 1989, but we have the same intentions, we still feel as excited about it as we ever did”. It's only a band. It's just what we do”. Long may Teenage Fanclub continue to defy rock & roll conventions, all be it through low expectations and increasingly lovely records. Now that's a way to achieve longevity. Support the show (https://www.songsommelier.com)

“The Circle” The singer/guitarist Jim Shepherd is probably best known for being a part of the legendary indie Scottish outfit the Jasmine Minks. One of the first bands signed to Alan McGee's Creation Records, the ‘Minks put out a handful of albums, including classics like Another Age and 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 All Good Preachers Go To Heaven. They played with bands like the Violent Femmes, Jesus and Mary Chain and The Go-Betweens, recorded a Peel Session, got tons of critical acclaim and got airplay on college stations all across the U.S. The band went on hiatus in 2001, reformed in 2010, played sporadic gigs here and there since then, put out a handful of new singles and have a new album brewing as we speak. In the meantime, Shepherd's first solo album has just hit shelves. Titled The Circle, Shepherd's band for the record includes members of The Loft, The Weather Prophets, June Brides and The Distractions. A ferocious and thoughtful collection filled with indie rock stomp, melodic mod hooks and introspective ballads, The Circle is stirring, satisfying and altogether thrilling work. www.jimjasmine.bandcamp.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine/com

In episode #70 of The XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar catches up with Simon 'Sice' Rowbottom and Tim Brown from The Boo Radleys about 'Keep On With Falling,' their first album in almost a quarter of a century. Made up of the three original members, Sice, Brown and Cieka, the quarter of a century between Creation Records' money-burning approaches to recording and marketing and the new age of independence puts The Boo Radleys in a new, perfect state of freedom. Democratic writing processes and the gift of home technology as powerful as any residential studio of the nineties has set the band on a new path, closer to the targets the trio had in mind all along. In this interview, Sice and Tim talk about the new album, their 90s heyday, being on Creation Records, splitting up, upcoming shows and much more.

This episode is a co-production with the Fifty Years of Fun podcast. In Jamming! 13, published in the spring of 1982, a 17-yr old Tony Fletcher wrote an editorial called ‘A Statement.' Among those to read it was Alan McGee, new to London from Glasgow at the time, who was inspired to start a fanzine and a club night and a label all of his own. That label was Creation Records, home to The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream and Oasis, to name but four. Along the way Alan would become a figurehead of the 1990s British music scene, and was recently the subject matter of a movie named for his autobiography, Creation Stories, produced by Danny Boyle, directed by Nick Moran, and co-written by Irvine Welsh.Tony Fletcher interviewed Alan McGee for The Best of Jamming!, and you will hear their conversation in this episode. Before that, courtesy of the podcast Fifty Years of Fun, which is producing an episode for each of the first 50 singles released on Creation, you will hear 'A Statement' read by Californian singer-songwriter Rose Melberg. Rose is a former member of the bands Tiger Trap, The Softies and Go Sailor and an established artist in her own right. And, following the interview with McGee, you will hear Matt Roberts and Scott Miller, from Fifty Years of Fun, interview Tony Fletcher about 'A Statement', its influence on McGee, and about the story of Jamming! and the culture of those times. Thanks to Fifty Years Of Fun for permission to use their material.
