It wasn't the Penguins' night on Wednesday night, though they did get a point. Hunter is joined by Alex Metzger of the Last Word On Senator's podcast to recap this thriller as the officiating really dictated this game. They start the show with some ticky-tacky calls on both sides of things and how it's super rare when you see a team get 9 opportunities on the power play. Alex breaks down how the Senators could dictate terms on the man advantage against one of the best PKs in the league and how the Sens have had one of the best power plays in the league all year. After that, they look at how goaltending also played a big factor as Cam Talbot was a bit shaky while Casey DeSmith could've had that last one on Brady Tkachuk. Alex goes into which goals from Talbot were a bit shakier than others and how it's unlikely he gets the start for Friday's game. Hunter also again addresses the lack of depth on the Penguins as Jeff Carter probably had his worst game of the season. Heck, he even whiffed on a shorthanded two-on-one odd-man rush in this game. He also praises Jason Zucker and Evgeni Malkin for strong efforts before ending the show with a quick look ahead to Friday's rematch. What do the Penguins have to do to win it? What do the Senators have to do to sweep the home and home? All that, plus much more on this episode of Locked On Penguins. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Pittsburgh Penguins have another back-to-back situation this weekend as they're set to play the Winnipeg Jets and the Carolina Hurricanes. Hunter starts the show by reviewing some practice notes from Thursday and giving yinz some small scoops on a couple of the injury situations. After that, he previews Friday's game against the Jets and what's made them so successful this season when not many saw it coming. He analyzes the roster while still not believing in them and goes into what they do well and how the Penguins can counter it, just like they did back in November. After that, Hunter gives his take on the goalie situation and why Dustin Tokarski should start on Friday since he had the hot hand in the Vancouver game. He then pivots to Casey DeSmith and why he would get the chance to get his game back together on Saturday, even though the Penguins would be a bit gassed. Finally, Hunter does a small preview for that game against the Hurricanes and looks at how the Penguins can finally get a result against them. Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins snapped out of their funk in a big way on Sunday night with a 4-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes. Hunter starts this episode by making sure a win is indeed allowed before touching on how seeing Jake Guentzel get back to his usual self was the biggest reason for the win. He looks at where the two goals were scored and how Guentzel finally decided to simplify things in his game to get back on the score sheet. After that, Hunter praises Casey DeSmith and how he gave the Penguins his best start of the season. He looks at why the Penguins need this level from him until Tristan Jarry is ready to come back since they need to keep pace with the rest of the teams in the division. He also analyzes Jason Zucker's goal and how he could finally pull off that beautiful move before roasting the power play for another awful performance. What needs to change on that unit? Is Todd Reirden not doing enough in terms of coaching? Is it the players not executing? Hunter then wraps up the show with a full preview of Tuesday's game against the Vancouver Canucks. 2023 is here, and so is the PensBurgh Podcast. Refreshed and ready to talk more hockey, Garrett and Robbie are here to break down the latest Pittsburgh Penguins action. Goalie Tristan Jarry suffered an injury in the Winter Classic. His ailment forced Casey DeSmith to enter in relief. Since then, Dustin Tokarski has been recalled from the WB/S Penguins. To avoid beating a dead horse this week a la Jeff Carter/Brian Dumoulin, we'll talk about Casey DeSmith. He owns a 4-7-2 record, 2.99 GAA, and .911 SV PCT. In the event Jarry misses substantial time, how confident are you DeSmith can be the No. 1 goalie with a team that is already so maddeningly inconsistent? In addition to that, we have a six-question mailbag this week to round out the first show of 2023. Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

That's now six losses in a row for the Pittsburgh Penguins as things got worse on Thursday night. To start things off, Hunte roasts the team for their horrendous start in the first period as the game was lost within the opening couple of minutes. He looks at how their legs weren't there, which is unacceptable for a team that just had three days off. He then looks at how Casey DeSmith needed to do a better job keeping them in the game in that first period as he didn't like the second goal that he gave to Eichel. Following that, Hunter gets into how the Penguins looked in the second period before he again roasts the team for not getting anything out of it. He also is wary of the idea of Casey DeSmith getting the starter's reps going forward if Tristan Jarry is going to be out for longer than a day-to-day basis. DeSmith simply has to be better or this team could really fall out of it pretty quickly. Hunter also rips the front office for giving this coaching staff a bottom six that mostly can't score (except you, Brock McGinn, and Josh Archibald) and how the Penguins basically need their top six to score every night or its curtains. Following that, he ends the show thinking about if the Penguins really have any younger players that they can recall from WBS that could make a difference. All that, plus much more on this somber episode of Locked On Penguins. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. The Pittsburgh Penguins' skid continued on Monday afternoon with a 2-1 loss to the Boston Bruins. It was a game that featured the Penguins doing a lot of good things, but they then made mistakes in the 3rd period that cost them two points. To start things off, Hunter slams Mike Sullivan for putting out a lineup that should've been better. He goes into how Sullivan usually never does 11 forwards and seven defensemen and wonders why he all of a sudden decided to do that. He also goes at him for continuing to put Brian Dumoulin on the ice in late-game situations when things are most dire. Should Ruhwedel have played over Dumoulin? Why isn't Drew O'Connor getting more minutes? After that, Hunter continues to question Sullivan because Kasperi Kapanen saw his ice time go down yet again, even when he was playing well. He also gets into Casey DeSmith coming in for Tristan Jarry and how well he was playing before the last two goals happened. He then looks at some positives from this game and how most of the Penguins' mistakes are fixable. Finally, Hunter ends the show with his thoughts on the team going forward and why you should still think this team can make the playoffs. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The winning streak is over for the Pittsburgh Penguins but this is a loss that not many should be upset about. Hunter is joined by Kat Hunter of Hurricanes Twitter to break this one down and they first start with how great this game was. They look at how it had a playoff-like feel to it, and how we need a seven-game series between the two. They also get into goaltending and how Casey DeSmith let the Penguins down with a couple of stinkers. Hunter even questions why HCMS started DeSmith since the team wasn't on a B2B. They then look at how special teams played a role as the Penguins' PP was shut down (for the most part and how the Hurricanes' PK was able to get it done. They also look at how Crosby was a bit off, how Kapanen had another stellar game, Brock's goal in his return, plus how Jordan Staal made everyone in Pittsburgh miss him...yet again. Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins are fully back...maybe? They got their second win in a row on Friday night and Hunter is here to recap it. He starts the show with how this was another complete team performance by the Penguins and how well they did to respond to adversity. He looks at how they were able to recover from a down second period to dominate the Leafs in the third fully and how that third period was the best he's seen them defend all year. He also praises Casey DeSmith for another strong performance as Mike Sullivan continues giving him more starts since he may not be happy with Jarry's play. He even eats more crow on Brock McGinn after he got his second goal in as many games and now has five points in his last five games. In the second segment, he praises the second line as they were hounding the puck all night. Was this Malkin's best game of the season? How is Jason Zucker's redemption going? After that, he goes into how Brian Dumoulin had a strong game as he continues to get fewer minutes than usual. A win? In this economy? Yes, it actually happened as the Pittsburgh Penguins took down the Washington Capitals, 4-1 to snap their seven-game skid. Hunter starts off the show by touching on why this was a great team performance and how EVERYONE chipped in. He looks at how the team got goal-scoring from everywhere (not just the top six for a change) and how that really paved the way toward a win. He then dissects Casey DeSmith's game and looks at how he was able to keep them in the game, especially during those first 5-7 minutes of the first period. Hunter also shouts out the defensive core for really stepping up when Rutta and POJ went down with injuries since that forced other players to play more minutes. After that, Hunter gives his top player performances and starts with two bottom six players. After that, he looks at how Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin led by example, plus how Jeff Petry had his best game in quite a long time. Finally, Hunter gets to the listener takeaways and touches on how Ty Smith could make his Penguins debut if some of these injuries are serious. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! It's an off day and one that was badly needed for the Pittsburgh Penguins. With that, Hunter is joined by Rob Rossi of The Athletic and they go all into the Penguins' struggles. They first touch on Brian Dumoulin and what the Penguins can do to help him out. Should he get bottom-pairing minutes? Is he going to be scratched by Mike Sullivan? If he comes off the top pairing, who should replace him? After that, the two look at Jeff Petry's season so far and why the Penguins need A LOT more out of him. Is he going to figure it out? What's missing from his game? The two then look at the struggles of the special team's units and what the Penguins need to do to correct them (especially the PK). Hunter wonders if the PK just figures it out, then that could get this machine rolling once again. Rob also makes a great suggestion about who the Penguins should run their power play through more often before they look at the goaltending struggles. What does Casey DeSmith struggle the most with? Is Tristan Jarry going to get back in form? Finally, the two end the show with a discussion on the supporting cast as a whole, plus a look at if the Fenway Sports Group could consider a management change if this continues. Yes, it's a bit late, but we have another episode out for today! Hunter recaps the woeful 4-1 Penguins' loss to the Flames and he first starts out with the goaltending...but this time it's in a bad way. He goes into how Casey DeSmith was great at the start before he let in a couple of stinkers, which thwarted the Penguins' comeback attempt. He breaks down the first goal and why he needed to get his stick in the way to prevent it from getting to Nazem Kadri before going into how he looked small and out of place on the Huberdeau and Stone goals. He then gets into just how bad the top pairing and Sidney Crosby were as they looked like they had nothing all game. In fact, the only main player that he shouts out for playing well was Evgeni Malkin. After that, he dissects Sam Poulin's debut and how he should get more games moving forward, especially with the injuries. It's time to see what the team has in him. Finally, he looks at how this losing streak is nothing to worry about and compares this start to the one they had last season. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Pittsburgh Penguins definitely got what they deserved on Monday night. That said, there's another game on tonight for the Penguins, and what better way to preview it than to have Jessw Belmosto of Locked On Flames on for it! The two do a special crossover as Jess catches everyone up on how the Flames have been to start the season. She goes into the new players that they acquired over the offseason and how Brad Treliving did all he could to replace Tkachuk and Gaudreau. She also looks at how Jacob Markstrom has done this season (he killed the Penguins last season). Following that, Hunter goes into the Penguins through six games and touches on their most recent loss to the Edmonton Oilers. What went wrong for them after the 1st period? Who needs to step it up in order for the Penguins to bounce back? He also looks at how Casey DeSmith could be a difference-maker for this one since he's in line to get the start. Finally, the two give some keys to victory for both of the teams before they give a prediction on how it will go. All that, plus much more on this special edition of Locked On Penguins. Well, there's no more 82-0 season! The Penguins fell to the Canadiens in overtime on Monday night and Hunter is here to talk all about it. He goes over the goals that were scored first and how Evgeni Malkin continues to have a fire lit within him. He then breaks down what went wrong on the tying goal and then the game-winner. He shows his screen and is able to analyze who is in the wrong in each sequence and what each player should've been doing, especially on the tying goal from Caufield. Hunter also looks at the personnel that as used to defend the lead late in regulation and then during the PK in overtime. Should Mike Sullivan have opted for some different players? Who could've done a better job? After that, Hunter keeps it objective and goes after the top line, along with Kris Letang for their poor performances, even though they'll likely be better on Thursday against the Kings. He then has some positive things to look back on for this game, including the play of POJ, Casey DeSmith's great saves, and Malkin's beast mode gem. Finally, Hunter ends the show with some thoughts about how there isn't much to worry about right now and that this team is still in a great spot. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! We're almost done with the preseason, yinz. Hunter fully recaps the Penguins' 3-2 preseason win from Monday night and there was A LOT to like. He goes over the goals that were scored (two on the power play) and what he liked about each. What changes about the PP were noticeable? Will those basic mechanics be a mainstay during the regular season? He also praises Jason Zucker for his goal and again goes over one of his BOLD predictions for him heading into this season. After that, he shouts out Casey DeSmith for his tremendous performance as he looks to be ready for the season. What could this mean for limiting Jarry's starts? Does he have a different swagger to him compared to last year? He then goes over some "concerns" about the bottom pairing and how some of them are pretty similar to how fans felt when the Matheson-Ceci pairing was rolled out. After that, he gets into a scenario where the Penguins could be in a cap crunch to open the season and then finishes the show with who has the edge between Poehling and Archibald for that 12th forward spot. Penguins hockey is back, baby (even though it's only preseason). Hunter starts the show off by recapping the team's first preseason game and who stood out the most to him. He looks at Jason Zucker's goal and how he was able to pull that off, while also hoping that the team gets more of that during the regular season. He also assesses Drew O'Connor's performance, as well as Sam Poulin's. Has Poulin been more noticeable as of late? What does that mean for his chances of making the team? How was Ty Smith in his Penguins debut? He also assesses him and then looks at how Casey DeSmith played in his first game since he got hurt in the playoffs. Following that, he recaps the second preseason game, and yeah, it went the way everyone expected. Was Danton Heinen the best player on the ice? How was Ryan Poehling's debut? Does Josh Archibald need to do a bit more to secure his spot on the team? He then breaks some news about a couple of roster cuts before giving his thoughts on the players that will be playing on Tuesday against the Detroit Red Wings. There WAS a signing on Tuesday but not the one you all were waiting for. That's right, Casey DeSmith is back for the next two years to be Tristan Jarry's backup. Hunter goes into the deal and gives his thoughts on whether the Penguins made the right move or not. He points out DeSmith's deficiencies with staying healthy and not being consistent, while also looking at some of the other goalies available and comparing his numbers to them. He also looks at how the Penguins are taking another massive gamble again by running this tandem back for a third time, especially since there are questions about both goalies. After the DeSmith talk, he gets to the news that the Penguins and Letang are closing in on a deal. He looks at how both sides seem to be getting what they want (if it gets done) and how this was the only possible option for the team heading into the next three years. Finally, Hunter shouts out Dana Heinze for the incredible job he did with the Penguins throughout his tenure while going into a couple of fun stories surrounding him and the core players. Hunter starts the show by touching on the latest regarding Kris Letang as Elliotte Friedman gave an update on 32 Thoughts. Are the two sides getting closer? What's the gap now? Hunter shares some optimism towards a new deal as he's feeling more confident about a deal getting done with Letang than he does with Malkin. He also touches on the David Pagnotta update and whether there's a chance that Letang's AAV could be below 8. Following that, Hunter gives his thoughts on the rumors that the Penguins are discussing a new deal with Casey DeSmith. There are some conflicting reports, but which way should the Penguins go? Is it right to look for a new backup? Has DeSmith done enough to earn that job for a third straight season? Finally, Hunter ends the show with a little more draft talk as he gives a couple more names that could be available to them, plus takes a listener's question about a potential free agent fit.
