In this special birthday episode, Suzanne reflects on turning 59 and shares some of the greatest lessons she has learned from caring for more than 1,000 people at the end of life and training over 400,000 people to care for the dying. Patrick Mork has spent more than two decades working in the tech world, building and leading marketing teams at tech startups and helping to launch numerous products and brands across 3 different continents. In 2011, he joined Google and led the team there that created the Google Play brand. But, in 2017, he had a major life crisis that led him to pivot toward coaching and developing leaders in startups across Latin America. He moved to Chile and launched LEAP, it's a leadership development company. All of that inspired his first book, “Step Back and Leap: 9 Keys to Unlock Your Life and Make Change Happen.” He was on the Florida Gulf Coast University campus last week to give the final talk for the university's Provost's Seminar Series. The title of his talk was “Becoming Unstoppable: 5 Pillars to Build Resilience in the Age of AI.”
"Performing for Failure: Embodying Grief on Stage Through Ethnodrama" Yoon Won Chang | PhD Candidate Department of Anthropology, Emory University This talk is an excerpt from an ethnography that documents the making of a theater performance about grief after suicide in contemporary South Korea. I analyze how the actors and the director interpret and embody the real-life stories collected through interviews with suicide loss survivors. The creative team experiences the inevitable failures in interpreting the grief, yet attempts to embody the already fractured self-narratives of pain and healing provided by the survivors. I ask how grief becomes a collective experience and how the language and the body are negotiated in this process. "I am a PhD candidate in Anthropology at Emory University. For the past seven years, I have closely accompanied suicide loss survivors in Korea by organizing grief groups and other cultural events. In my Doctoral dissertation, I explore how suicide loss survivors' experience of grief is sculpted, negotiated, and refracted within the stat suicide prevention policies, the psychiatric intervention, self-narratives, and collective practices of healing." Jared Medina | Department of Psychology, Emory University My presentation will explore the cognitive mechanisms behind how the mind actively does embodiment. Using evidence from perceptual illusions (such as the mirror box and rubber hand illusion) and individuals with brain damage, I will discuss foundational processes that shape our bodily awareness. This overview is designed to provoke a broader dialogue on how theories and methods related to embodiment can conceptually inform the development of social AI.Dr. Medina is an Associate in the Department of Psychology at Emory University, having earned his Ph.D. in Cognitive Science from Johns Hopkins University. His research explores the cognitive and neural mechanisms of embodiment and sensorimotor plasticity, using evidence from perceptual illusions, brain damaged individuals, and neuroimaging to investigate how the brain represents the body. Masaki Matsubara | Center for Contemplative Sciences, Keio University + University of Tsukuba, Japan "Exploring the transition from the cognitive “Mind” to the phenomenological “Soma,” I will examine whether humans and AI can truly “dance” together through empathy as embodied joint action. I raise the fundamental question of whether a resonant “Field” (Ba) can emerge without the shared vulnerability inherent to biological life. Using the framework of Ki, Do, and Ma (Timing, Intensity, and Space), will discuss how these principles can inform experimental designs for social robots to foster our shared humanity."Dr. Matsubara is an Associate Professor at the University of Tsukuba and leads the Laboratory for Somatic Intelligence and Artistic Expression. His research integrates contemplative education, embodied cognition, and human-AI collaboration. He utilizes first-person approach and arts-based research to explore the emergence of awareness and compassion. Dr. Raymond DePaulo began as a student at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1968 and went on to become an M.D. in 1972 and then did his residencies there. He founded the Affective Disorder Clinic in 1977 and these days he's co-director of the Johns Hopkins Mood Disorders Center. He was on the Florida Gulf Coast University campus to give a talk for the university's Provost's Seminar Series so stopped by the studio for a conversation about his work and career and the changes he's seen over the past 58 years. He also spoke with the Naples Discussion Group while he was in town.
Florida Gulf Coast University's 2025-26 Provost's Seminar Series kicked off last Friday with renowned infectious disease expert, Dr. Michael Osterholm. He is considered to be one of the nation's foremost experts in infectious diseases – and has dedicated his career to advancing global efforts to prepare and respond to emerging infectious disease threats. We normally interview speakers for the Provost's Seminar Series in-studio while they're on campus to talk, but we're kicking off this year with a special on-location recording of a conversation with Dr. Osterholm, and Dr. Steve Mason, he's a cardiologist and a member of the Naples Discussion Group's Executive Committee.
This episode continues the Heal NPD Seminar Series, featuring Dr. Mark Ettensohn and his associates, Deanna Young, Psy.D., and Danté Spencer, M.A. In this session, the group discusses Narcissistic Personality Disorder: Progress in Understanding and Treatment by Igor Weinberg, Ph.D., and Elsa Ronningstam, Ph.D. The conversation examines recent advances in how clinicians conceptualize and treat narcissistic personality disorder, moving beyond fixed trait models toward a dynamic, relational understanding of the self and its development. Themes include the interplay between grandiose and vulnerable self-states, the interdependence of self-esteem regulation, affect, cognition, empathy, and interpersonal functioning, and the recognition that narcissistic pathology evolves through cumulative disruptions in early attunement and relational safety. The discussion also explores how developmental misattunements - whether through neglect, overindulgence, or inconsistency - shape defensive adaptations and contribute to the oscillation between self-inflation and shame. Throughout the seminar, the team reflects on the therapeutic process of working with narcissistic patients, emphasizing empathy, reflective capacity, and the slow, relational work of rupture and repair that makes genuine transformation possible. This series is designed for clinicians, students, and anyone interested in a nuanced, compassionate understanding of narcissism, personality, and psychological change. This episode continues the Heal NPD Seminar Series, featuring Dr. Mark Ettensohn and his associates, Deanna Young, Psy.D., and Danté Spencer, M.A. In this session, the group discusses Principles of Psychodynamic Treatment for Patients with Narcissistic Personality Disorder by Holly Crisp, M.D., and Glen Gabbard, M.D. The conversation explores how psychodynamic clinicians conceptualize and treat narcissistic personality disorder, emphasizing the disorder's pleomorphic nature - its capacity to take many forms depending on context, stress, and level of personality organization. Themes include the oscillation between grandiose and vulnerable self-states, the role of shame as a central organizing affect, and the therapist's challenge of moving flexibly along a supportive–interpretive continuum. The group also examines common transference and countertransference dynamics, the integration of Kohut's and Kernberg's models, and the transformative role of rupture and repair in the therapeutic process. Through candid discussion, clinical reflection, and moments of humor, the seminar illustrates how empathic attunement, flexibility, and authentic connection form the heart of effective treatment for pathological narcissism. This series is designed for clinicians, students, and anyone interested in a deeper and more nuanced understanding of narcissism, personality, and the process of psychological healing. This episode marks the beginning of a new educational series from Heal NPD, featuring Dr. Mark Ettensohn and his associates: Deanna Young, Psy.D. and Danté Spencer, MA. This series offers a rare window into clinical reasoning and supervision, bringing viewers inside real discussions about theory, diagnosis, and treatment of personality pathology. In this first seminar, the group examines an influential paper by Pincus & Lukowitsky (2010) and explores one of the central challenges in the field: how to define pathological narcissism. The conversation addresses the criterion problem surrounding narcissism. That is, the lack of a unified construct definition. It traces how this has led to conflicting models and measures of narcissism. Topics include the distinction between pathological narcissism and NPD, the interplay of grandiosity and vulnerability, the overlap with depression and trauma, and emerging dimensional approaches to understanding personality. This series is designed for clinicians, students, and anyone interested in a deeper and more integrative understanding of narcissism, personality, and self-regulation. How prepared are you to support a loved one at the end of life? This is a question many avoid but is crucial for everyone to consider. In the Good Death Seminar Series, we equip you with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the journey of end-of-life care. We begin by sharing personal stories that illustrate the transformative power of being educated and empowered in this role. Together, we'll explore the history and purpose of hospice care, the impact of Medicare, and critical questions you should ask when selecting a hospice provider. Our goal is to make a meaningful difference, even if it helps just one person find peace and positivity in challenging times. As we continue, we confront the challenges posed by the rising number of for-profit hospices, questioning how profit-driven motives might affect the quality of care. Through poignant narratives like Mr. Penn's, we expose systemic gaps and the urgent need for patient-centered care. By reflecting on the invaluable contributions of hospice workers, we advocate for a renewed focus on collaboration to ensure dignified and supportive end-of-life experiences. With discussions on pain management, advanced directive documents, and the essential role families play, we aim to empower you with the tools needed for informed decision-making. Finally, we underscore the importance of seeing death not just as a medical event but as a profound human experience. Inspired by the wisdom of Cicely Saunders, we discuss how education, kindness, and support can restore the sacredness of both life and death. You'll discover resources like the Good Death, Good Life Masterclass and the Confident Caregiver Course, designed to equip you with essential skills for compassionate care. By preparing for the end of life, we not only enhance our daily experiences and relationships but also empower ourselves to live fully and without regrets. What happens when we embrace the reality of death instead of fearing it? Join me, Suzanne O'Brien, founder of the International Doula Givers Institute, on the Ask a Death Doula podcast as we embark on a transformative journey through the complex world of end-of-life care with The Good Death Seminar Series. This episode promises to challenge your perceptions, with stories from my hospice experiences and insights from historical perspectives that confront our deep-seated fear of death. Together, we'll explore how aligning our intentions with compassion can redefine our understanding of what it truly means to experience a 'good death.' Throughout our engaging Good Death Seminar Series, we delve into the intricacies of end-of-life care within the current medical system, questioning if we've forgotten that death is a natural part of life. Through personal anecdotes, from patients like Vivian to families navigating the difficult medical landscape, we highlight the necessity of a purpose-driven approach. We'll discuss the lost art of dying, dissecting cultural and language barriers that obscure the reality of mortality and urging for a return to empathy and understanding. Our journey doesn't stop there. We address the commercialization of death and the urgency of respecting individual end-of-life wishes. By sharing poignant stories, like that of oncology patient Maureen, we examine how a supportive and informed environment can empower people facing the end of life. With a focus on compassion and personal responsibility, we explore how each of us, with the right education and support, can foster a world where everyone has the opportunity to experience a good death. Join us as we embrace the sacredness of death and its reflection on life, paving the way for a compassionate future. This is a bonus podcast from Greenville Community Church and East North Church in Greenville, South Carolina included in our Seminar Series. Holy Scripture and Christian tradition claim human beings have a soul; however, most neuroscientists claim belief in the soul is obsolete. It is said that human attributes once ascribed to the soul can now be ascribed to the brain, making belief in the soul superfluous. In this talk, w examine the case against the existence of the soul and proceed to demonstrate the falsity of the claims made by neuroscientists. We then proceed to establish solid ground for belief in the soul through the works of Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas. Last, we underscore the importance of the human soul in relation to God.
