Today, I'm thrilled to announce my episode with Tony winning librettist and performer Bob Martin, who is the author of two of this season's newest hits—SMASH and BOOP—both of which started previews on Broadway this week. Tune in to hear about the writing processes of those two musicals, and some of the other stories of his legendary career, including why he was sore every night after performing THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, the character he almost played in THE PROM, writing for the film adaptation of that musical, why he loves writing for Beth Leavel, the challenges of working on MINSKY'S, changing ELF between its three Broadway runs, what he learned from Charles Strouse and Thomas Meehan, revisiting unsuccessful musicals in HEY, LOOK ME OVER, how supply chain issues have affected Broadway, developing THE STING with Harry Connick, Jr., working with Kevin Kline on AMERICAN CLASSIC, his idea for a sequel to THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, revising KISS ME, KATE in London, and so much more. You won't want to miss this honest and fun conversation with one of Broadway's funniest and most prolific writers.

Have you ever been envious of someone like Harry Connick, Jr., who seems to have it all? On this episode of Great Practice, Great Life, Brother Curtis, a seasoned monk, joins Steve to explore the tangled web of envy and jealousy that can often trap us. With humor and wisdom, we unpack how these emotions, while natural, can undermine our personal and professional growth. Through engaging stories and reflections, we learn to identify envy as a signal of deeper issues like self-acceptance and how cultivating empathy, self-awareness, and emotional intelligence can open new doors. Through this conversation, we examine the roots of our envious feelings, often tracing back to childhood and family dynamics. Brother Curtis provides guidance on understanding these emotions through the lens of our personal life practice and the concept of vocation. By focusing on who we are called to be rather than what we do, we can find balance and resilience amidst life's changes. We also highlight the importance of nurturing present moments, shifting from a mindset of fear and scarcity to one focused on contribution and fulfillment. Finally, we invite you to reflect on your true calling and essence in life. Consider moving beyond mere occupations to embrace a life that heals past wounds and cherishes what is mortal. Foundational practices like gratitude and relationship-building are essential for daily living and professional growth. Join us in wrapping up with a meditation to release envy and embrace gratitude, paving the way for greater purpose and clarity. In this episode, you will hear: An exploration of envy and jealousy, including their roots and impact on personal and professional growth Insights from Brother Curtis on identifying envy as a signal for deeper issues like self-acceptance Strategies for transforming envy into empathy, self-awareness, and emotional intelligence Examining childhood and family dynamics as origins of envious feelings The concept of vocation and finding balance by focusing on who we are called to be The importance of nurturing present moments and shifting from scarcity to a mindset of contribution Foundational practices like gratitude and relationship-building as anchors for a fulfilling life Follow and Review: We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. Saying “yes” to opportunities, Craig's dog boo.  Rye New York. Somehow Craig thinks I project warmth and kindness. Windows in school that go all the way to the ground that give kids the confidence to be on the world. Bullies who don't think they are bullies, the gain and loss of choice, and the idea that the journey we are all on must contain random gifts and failures to get us where we are now.  Bio: Craig Bierko made his Tony-nominated Broadway debut as “Professor Harold Hill” in Susan Stroman's Broadway revival of Meredith Willson's The Music Man. A familiar face to Broadway audiences, Craig most recently appeared in Conor McPherson's Girl from the North Country featuring songs by Bob Dylan; as “Sky Masterson” in Des McAnuff's revival of Guys & Dolls, and in Lincoln Center's Thou Shalt Not featuring music by Harry Connick. Craig recently completed the darkly comic feature film D(e)ad. Other film work includes starring opposite Russell Crowe in Ron Howard's Cinderella Man, The Long Kiss Goodnight with Samuel Jackson and Geena Davis, Larry David's cult classic Sour Grapes and Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Craig has appeared in numerous TV shows, most recently on the hit Netflix series Sex/Life as well as on the Peabody Award-winning UnREAL. Craig appeared as Carrie Bradshaw's love interest “Ray ‘The Jazz Guy' King” on HBO's iconic Sex and the City.  Craig bathed John Malkovich in his online talk show “Bathing with Bierko” and offers no apologies.

What the Riff?!?
1989 - July: The B-52's “Cosmic Thing”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 25, 2024 42:36

Because all of us presenters live in Georgia it is hard for us to believe that Cosmic Thing, the fifth studio album from The B-52's was the international breakthrough album.  We had been listening to “Rock Lobster” and “Private Idaho” for about a decade before this album came out.  But much of the B-52's discography was confined to college radio stations outside of their home state.  Cosmic Thing would really put the group on the map nationally and internationally. This album was also a comeback for the group.  The original group consisted of Fred Schneider on vocals, Kate Pierson on vocals and keyboard, Cindy Wilson on vocals and tambourine, Ricky Wilson on guitars, and Keith Strickland on percussion.  Ricky Wilson died of AIDS in October 1985, and hadn't told the band other than Keith Strickland that he had the then-terminal disease because he didn't want anyone worrying or fussing over him.  His death devastated the group, particularly his sister, Cindy Wilson.  The band did not tour to promote their 1985 album release “Bouncing off the Satellites,” nor did they put out any new music until 1989.When they got back together they decided to remain a foursome.  Keith Strickland moved to guitar and they brought in session drummers to fill in.  It took about a year to compose the songs from this album, with the group spending a lot of time working through their grief in the loss of Ricky Wilson.  The resulting album, however, was a tremendous success, with two songs breaking into the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100, the first songs of the group to do so.Bruce brings us this comeback album in this week's podcast. Love ShackThis has become the B-52's signature song.  It went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 - the group's first top 40 hit.  The inspiration for this song was partly an African American club outside Athens, Georgia, called the “Hawaiian Ha-Le.”  It was a place that looked like a shack from the outside, but hosted a great selection of bands.Cosmic ThingThe title track and lead-off song to the album preceded the album by a few months.  It was released on the soundtrack to the film “Earth Girls Are Easy.”  It is also known as “(Shake That) Cosmic Thing.”Channel ZA deeper cut , this track has a little more political feel.  It discusses the changes happening in the world, along with pollution, radiation, and other concerns.  “Space junk, laser bombs, ozone holes, better put up my umbrella!”  The band never lost their dance connection, with songs leaning more towards party and less towards politics.RoamThe second big hit leads off side 2, and also went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson duet on this song, making it the only vocal track on the album in which Fred Schneider doesn't have a vocal.  It was the second and final US top-10 hit for the group. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:It Had to Be You by Harry Connick, Jr. (from the motion picture “When Harry Met Sally”)Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan star in this romantic comedy, with Harry Connick, Jr. providing most of the soundtrack. STAFF PICKS:I'll Be You by the ReplacementsWayne features a Minnesota band which got their start in the punk genre before moving to alternative rock.  This song plays in the bachelor party in the 1996 comedy “Jerry Maguire.”  The replacements formed in 1979, and it would be 10 years before this song would be their sole entry into the top 100, peaking at number 51.Free Fallin' by Tom PettyLynch's staff pick is a big hit off Petty's solo album “Full Moon Fever.”  This song documents the feelings that a guy has after breaking up with his girl.  Petty has ELO founder and fellow Traveling Wilburys member Jeff Lynne joining him on this single, providing synthesizer, bass, acoustic guitar, and backing vocals.Lay Your Hands On Me  by Bon JoviRob brings us an epic rock song from Jon Bon Jovi off the album “New Jersey.” This one hit number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, the fourth single from the album to break into the top 10 on the pop charts.  Dolly Parton covered this single in 2014, rearranged as a gospel song.If Dirt Were Dollars by Don HenleyBruce closes out the staff picks with a deeper cut off Henley's massive album “End of the Innocence.” Never one to shy away from politics and culture, Henley rails in this track against materialism, hypocrisy, false patriotism, and hubris.  “These days the buck stops nowhere, no one takes the blame.  But evil is still evil in anybody's name.” INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:It Had to Be You by Harry Connick, Jr.We double dip on the Entertainment track to end this week's podcast, as Connick did a vocal and instrumental version of this classic song.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Episode #111: Branford Marsalis

Improv Exchange Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 10, 2023 64:55

After four decades in the international spotlight, the achievements of saxophonist Branford Marsalis continue to grow. From his initial recognition as a young jazz lion, he has expanded his vision as an instrumentalist, composer, bandleader, and educator, crossing stylistic boundaries while maintaining unwavering creative integrity. In the process, he has become a multi-award-winning artist with three Grammys, a citation by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master, and an avatar of contemporary artistic excellence. Growing up in the rich environment of New Orleans as the oldest son of pianist and educator, the late Ellis Marsalis, Branford was drawn to music along with siblings Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason. The Branford Marsalis Quartet, formed in 1986, remains his primary means of expression. In its virtually uninterrupted three-plus decades of existence, the Quartet has established a rare breadth of stylistic range as demonstrated on the band's latest release: The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul.  Branford has not confined his music to the jazz quartet context. A frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Branford has become increasingly sought after as a featured soloist with acclaimed orchestras worldwide, performing works by composers such as Copeland, Debussy, Glazunov, Ibert, Mahler, Milhaud, Rorem, Vaughan Williams and Villa-Lobos. And his legendary guest performances with the Grateful Dead and collaborations with Sting have made him a fan favorite in the pop arena. His work on Broadway has garnered a Drama Desk Award and Tony nominations for the acclaimed revivals of Children of a Lesser God, Fences, and A Raisin in the Sun. His screen credits include original music composed for: Spike Lee's Mo' Better Blues, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks starring Oprah Winfrey and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom starring Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman. Ma Rainey is the Netflix film adaptation of two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson's play, produced by Denzel Washington and released in December 2020. Branford has also shared his knowledge as an educator, forming extended teaching relationships at Michigan State, San Francisco State, and North Carolina Central Universities and conducting workshops at sites throughout the United States and the world. After the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, Branford and friend Harry Connick, Jr. conceived of “Musicians' Village,” a residential community in the Upper Ninth Ward of New Orleans. The centerpiece of the Village is the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, honoring Branford's father. The Center uses music as the focal point of a holistic strategy to build a healthy community and to deliver a broad range of services to underserved children, youth, and musicians from neighborhoods battling poverty and social injustice. In this episode, Branford shares his background, education, and musical journey. God can work through any situation. That means a major career setback, financial stress, and even challenging personal relationships can all become opportunities to see God's hand in our lives. Actually, oftentimes, He mostly works through trials, doesn't He? Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” Colton Dixon is our gues t for this episode of The Walk and his story introduces our audience to the ups and downs of the music business. He also reminds us of the faith one needs to have on a daily basis in any business. "I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." (John 16:33) Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship.
