What if integrating just two strength sessions per week could revolutionize your performance as a triathlete? Join us as we review recent research in strength training for triathletes. For example, athletes who combined endurance and strength training showed significant improvements in cycling and running economy compared to those who focused solely on endurance. This episode tackles the practical hurdles of incorporating strength routines, emphasizing the importance of proper form and overcoming resistance to heavy lifting. Beyond the gains in athletic performance, we highlight the crucial role of protein intake in maintaining lean body mass and supporting bone health. We delve into essential exercises such as squats, lunges, pushups, and calf strengthening, which are pivotal in addressing common weaknesses and preventing injury. Furthermore, we discuss posture issues, such as progressive kyphosis, often stemming from modern sedentary lifestyles, and the necessity of multi-joint exercises for overall athletic enhancement. Whether you're a seasoned triathlete or a newcomer to the sport, these insights offer a pathway to optimizing your training regimen and performance.Want to train with our group for in-person strength training? The Ross Island Lagoon, which sits in the center of the four-island complex known as Ross Island, is a byproduct of decades of mining. In addition to industrial purposes, the lagoon also has a long history of being used recreationally and provides habitat for a variety of vulnerable plant and animal species. In 2015, researchers began to see cyanobacterial blooms in the lagoon. Cyanobacteria is a type of bacteria which can pose a serious threat to the health of animals and people who come into close contact with the water. When present, it gives the water a bright green appearance.Because the lagoon is a warm, stagnant pool, it’s an ideal breeding ground for cyanobacteria. And it’s only getting warmer due to climate change. The tide from the Willamette pulls the cyanobacteria out into the river’s main flow, contaminating the rest of the water. The Oregon Health Authority routinely releases warnings urging against recreational river use during warmer seasons because of this.Since 2017, Oregon State University and the Willamette River group the Human Access Project have been working on reducing these Lagoon blooms. There is work being done by different groups to address the cyanobacterial blooms in the Ross Island Lagoon. Desirée Tullos, professor of Water Resources Engineering at Oregon State University, joins us to share more.
Okay, so this week is a tasty episode! I invited Becca King, a registered dietitian and social media influencer with nearly 200k followers, to join me on Focus Forward to talk about food, ADHD, and Executive Function as the three are more interconnected than you might think. We talk about many aspects of food and cooking - how to lower or get rid of barriers that may prevent us from cooking or eating nourishing food, meal planning and how to make it work for you and how it may change as your life situation changes. We also talked about the importance of crunch (haha!), finding satisfaction in the food we eat, and how to remove the guilt or shame we might feel when we don't cook or eat how we feel like we “should”. Becca follows an “all foods fit” approach to nutrition and really helps people get to a place where they can nourish themselves with nutrient-dense foods and eat the fun stuff, too. In the realm of cancer research, one persistent trend has emerged — the incidence of invasive melanoma rises steadily with advancing age. While this insidious disease remains rare in children and adolescents, it progressively asserts its presence as individuals grow older. The connection between age and melanoma incidence persists around the world, albeit with varying rates in different countries. Australia has the highest melanoma rates in the world. According to the Melanoma Institute Australia, every 30 minutes an Australian is diagnosed with melanoma and every 6 hours an Australian dies from it. Thankfully, research is making a difference. In the last decade, the 5-year overall survival rate for advanced melanoma has increased from less than 10% to more than 50%. In 2011, melanoma was Australia's 7th most deadly cancer. In 2021, melanoma was Australia's 11th most deadly cancer. In a new editorial paper, researchers John F. Thompson and Gabrielle J. Williams from the Melanoma Institute Australia at The University of Sydney discuss the intricacies of how age influences different varieties of melanoma incidence, prognosis and treatment. On August 17, 2023, their editorial was published in Aging's Volume 15, Issue 16, entitled, “The effect of age on melanoma incidence and prognosis.” Full blog - https://aging-us.org/2023/09/the-impact-of-age-on-melanoma-insights-from-recent-research/ Paper DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.204653 Corresponding author - John F. Many books have been written about TCKs and some of the challenges and benefits of expat life for kids. But recent research puts numbers and specific outcomes to some of these factors, and the results might surprise you. In a study done on Adverse Childhood Events, TCKs had significantly more ACEs than their counterparts in their home country. These are predictive of a number of issues both mentally and physically. Soft research suggests that 85% of TCKs experience some sort of depression or anxiety. That is SIGNIFICANTLY higher than their monocultural counterparts. That's just one outcome of the TCK life. Tanya Crossman has done research TCKs for years and breaks down the research for us. But what I love about Tanya is that she shares not just the difficult news of how this life may be affecting our children, but also the hope of how we can prevent some of these experiences for TCKs. I love her line, "We believe that TCK life can be conducive to good mental health." It's possible, but it does require awareness and proactive work of expat parents. I hope you enjoy this interview and Tanya's wealth of knowledge. A recent study by Li and colleague coming from the Charles Zuker lab suggests that the wanting of sugar and fat has to do with a specific population of cells within the vagus nerve that responds to sugar or fat to activate my favorite brain region, the nucleus of the tracts solitarius (nTS). This was independent of taste in the mouth and smell from the olfactory epithelium. These findings can explain why we still enjoyed consuming sweet and fatty foods with the lost of taste from COVID and other viruses. Can we use this information to help regulate sugar and fatty food cravings? Tune in to find out more. Main Reference: Li et al. Gut Brain Axis For Fat Preference. Nature. 2022; 610:722.
