How Limelight validated the B2B creator market by interviewing 100+ creators before building | David Walsh

Category Visionaries

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 25, 2025 28:07

Limelight is building the infrastructure layer for B2B creator marketing, processing payments and managing campaigns for companies spending six figures monthly on creator partnerships. With $2.1 million in funding from Signal to Noise Ratio, Ascend Ventures, Savion Ventures, and strategic angels including the head of AI at Amazon and the former Chief Product Officer at Lyft, Limelight powers creator programs for Clay, Webflow, ZoomInfo, and Bill.com. In this episode of BUILDERS, we sat down with David Walsh, Founder and CEO of Limelight, to learn how he validated the market by interviewing 100+ creators, why he deliberately chose not to build an agency despite customer demand, and how his platform tracks engagement data at scale to prove ROI for performance-focused buyers. Topics Discussed: The pivot from referral software to B2B creator infrastructure after 100+ creator interviews How creator attitudes shifted from refusing brand partnerships to actively monetizing Clay's playbook: building custom Clay tables for creators before asking them to post Why Limelight chose to power agencies rather than compete with them The data infrastructure required to justify $100K+ monthly creator budgets Tracking organic engagement, converting content to paid ads, and attributing pipeline The split between brand/social buyers and performance/demand gen buyers Launching social listening to challenge legacy social media management platforms GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Validate with 100+ user interviews before pivoting: David didn't just chat with a handful of potential users—he conducted and recorded over 100 interviews with B2B creators, asking detailed questions about monetization interest, partnership preferences, and content strategies. He then repeated this process with marketing leaders. This level of research rigor before committing to a pivot is rare but critical when entering emerging categories. The depth of qualitative research gave him conviction to make a contrarian bet when most creators were still refusing brand partnerships. Build where network effects are structural, not hoped for: David specifically chose a creator marketplace after a previous marketplace failure because the unit economics included built-in virality. When Limelight pays a creator $10,000, that creator has tens of thousands of followers who see the transaction result (the sponsored content). Every payment notification becomes inbound interest. He understood that in consumer marketplaces you compete on supply quality, but in creator marketplaces the supply actively markets your platform. Founders should identify whether their marketplace has structural network effects in the transaction itself, not just theoretical ones. Target micro-creators with niche audiences over vanity metrics: The counterintuitive insight: creators with 10,000-25,000 followers often outperform those with 100,000+ in B2B because deal sizes are $25K-$50K, not $100 sunglasses. Smaller creators have higher engagement rates, unsaturated audiences, authentic expertise in specific domains, and haven't been "bought and sold for" yet. When brands face the choice between a 100K-follower creator at $2,000 per post with 200 likes versus a 25K-follower creator at $1,000 per post with 300 likes, they irrationally choose the larger following. Founders should educate buyers that in B2B, targeted influence within specific buyer committees matters more than reach. Build data infrastructure to win performance buyers, not just brand buyers: Limelight tracks every piece of content in real-time (not waiting weeks for creator screenshots), monitors all engagement and segments it by ICP fit, provides self-reported attribution from demo forms, tracks website traffic spikes correlated to posting schedules, and generates qualified lead lists from content engagement. This comprehensive data layer is what allows demand gen leaders to reallocate spend from paid channels. The market is splitting 50/50 between brand/social buyers and performance/demand gen buyers—the latter has larger budgets and treats creator spend like paid media that requires attribution. Founders entering new marketing channels should build attribution infrastructure from day one, not as an afterthought. Deliberately choose infrastructure over services even when customers ask for help: Despite customers like Webflow, ZoomInfo, and Bill.com spending $100K+ monthly and requesting more hands-on support, David chose to build product and enable agencies rather than hire account managers and become a service business. His reasoning: people have tried to replace agencies in recruiting for decades and failed because buyers want the human in the middle. The bigger opportunity is being the infrastructure that powers all agencies, not competing with them. This fork-in-the-road decision—hire CSMs and influencer marketing managers versus build more product—defines whether you're building a scalable platform or a services business disguised as SaaS. Use your first customer to custom-build product, then scale it: Clay became Limelight's first customer when the platform was early. David essentially custom-built features for Clay's creator program, learning their workflow for building Clay tables for creators, their onboarding process, and their approach to creative freedom. This deep partnership gave Limelight the product foundation to scale from managing 20 creators to 200+ for Clay within nine months, then apply those learnings to other customers. Rather than building in a vacuum, founders should find a sophisticated first customer willing to co-develop the product, even if it means initially building something custom. // Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe. www.GlobalTalent.co // Don't Miss: New Podcast Series — How I Hire Senior GTM leaders share the tactical hiring frameworks they use to build winning revenue teams. “You don't have to reinvent the wheel to make good beers. That's not to say we don't try.”There's little like Moo Brew in the Australian beer landscape, however you look at it.The brewery blazed a trail for craft beer in Tasmania and remains something of a figurehead for the state's beer scene as one of the few breweries with a presence on the mainland. The unique bottles and John Kelly artwork on their labels marked them out as something different from the off – and that was before founder David Walsh carved the world-famous Mona into the rock underneath the original brewery. You could argue their refusal to bend from a dedication to finely-honed, classically-minded styles while the rest of the beer world was losing its mind also marks Moo out as different. Meanwhile, making it to this month's 20th anniversary with just three head brewers – all of whom still meet up in Hobart – is pretty extraordinary too.Ahead of their birthday celebrations, we were joined by the latest of those three, Jack Viney, to look back on two decades of Moo Brew. The chat covers the brewery's ethos and evolution, distinct brand and place within the Walsh empire, Moo's pioneering role within Tasmania, the arrival of Manky Sally's brewpub in Salamanca, Jack's career in beer, and the state of affairs for beer today. There's plenty to cover before we get to Jack too: Grifter becoming the latest local brewery to secure B Corp status; little Central Coast bottlo Oldfield Cellars beating all-comers to an ALIA trophy; a collab ten years in the making; and a look at the ins, outs, magic and mishaps of beer advent calendars. We also unveil the latest winner in the Bluestone Yeast Brewery of the Month – nominate yours here – and hear about the opening of submissions for the 2026 Royal Queensland Beer Awards.Start of segments: 13:45 – Jack Viney Part 1 37:11 – Bluestone Yeast Brewery of the Month 40:24 – Jack Viney Part 2To find out more about featuring on The Crafty Pint Podcast or otherwise partnering with The Crafty Pint, contact craig@craftypint.com.

How Black Friday Deliveries could have a lower environmental impact

Retailers don't have to wait for electric vehicles to cut emissions, operational efficiency can make a difference today. Black Friday keeps getting bigger every year. In the US alone, online sales will pass $10 billion over the weekend. Millions of parcels hit the roads, releasing millions of tonnes of CO in just a few days. And Ireland is no exception. The average Irish consumer is expected to spend €329 over the Black Friday period, with 63% of sales taking place online. That means a surge in home deliveries right across the country and a sharp rise in vehicle emissions as vans race to meet tight delivery windows (PWC). Sustainability strategies for Black Friday Some of the larger retailers are trying to get greener, but their plans are far off. IKEA has targets for electric deliveries by 2028, while Amazon and Currys aim for net zero by 2040. These goals are important, but they take time. Charging infrastructure, vehicle supply, and range limitations mean electric fleets cannot scale overnight. "The problem is that everyone's waiting for the future to fix the present," says David Walsh, CEO of SmartRoutes. "If retailers focused on using what they already have more efficiently, they could cut a fifth of delivery emissions almost overnight." Smarter planning can make a big difference. By consolidating stops, reducing duplicated routes, and grouping orders efficiently, retailers can reduce total distance driven by 15 to 20 percent. Over a peak week like Black Friday, that is the equivalent of taking more than 300,000 cars off the road. "The final mile is where a lot of the waste happens," Walsh adds. "You'll see two vans from the same retailer passing each other on the same street. That is completely avoidable." Consumers are also making more sustainable choices. Many choose to group deliveries if it means fewer trips. That creates pressure for retailers to reduce delivery emissions, not just focus on packaging or product sustainability. There is also a clear business case. Every mile avoided saves fuel and time. For large retailers, the savings can be significant, while still meeting customer expectations. Black Friday is the busiest delivery period of the year, but it also offers the biggest opportunity to make a measurable difference. Electrification will shape the future, but smarter delivery planning can reduce emissions today. New Zealand Post is moving to review its offerings amid a recent move to cut back on services. A new Government agreement will let it close almost 400 postal outlets, and reduce mail deliveries. They'll now only be required two times a week for most areas, down from three - and can fall from at least five times weekly in rural areas, to three. NZ Post CEO David Walsh says these changes reflect New Zealand's changing communication habits. "Our role is to deliver the services New Zealanders need - we'll keep delivering mail and we'll have to respond to the circumstances we're facing, but that's our job." Send us a textWhen Fairfax criminal defense / DUI lawyer Jonathan Katz joined with Ramsey Clark in defending the Plowshares activists for their 2000 criminal jury trial for their depleted uranium action, one of the group's supporters suggested getting ideas from lawyer David Walsh-Little , who served as standby trial counsel to the  Gods of Metal Plowshares Five in 1998. In the interim, Jon instead consulted with another lawyer who had defended a slew of political activists. Now, twenty-five years later, Jon Katz for the first time talks with David Walsh-Little, about winning with a devotion to true justice. David and his wife met in college and organized against Gulf War I when Jon was visiting peace protestors during lunchtime across from the White House, three blocks from the corporate law firm where Jon then worked, several months before Jon transitioned to his true love of criminal defense, with a nearby public defender's office. David became a public defender lawyer, and then transitioned to running a legal office from the Viva Catholic Worker House in Baltimore, followed by returning to public defender work at the state and then federal levels, and now in his solo law practice. In law school, David worked for William Kunstler and Ron Kuby. David does not see a secret to beating the prosecution beyond full devotion to our clients and strong experience. He makes a good point about the times that prosecutors ensnare themselves in weakness. David is a progressive lawyer and a true believer in the work he does. Between 2012 and 2019, Team Sky and then Ineos Grenadiers won seven out of eight editions of the Tour. However, there had been controversies along the way – therapeutic use exemptions to permit their key riders to take otherwise prohibited medication, therefore pushing right up to the line in terms of what is allowed by the rules. The jiffy bag incident. Letting riders and staff members go in the wake of the 2012 reasoned decision by the United States Anti-Doping Agency into Lance Armstrong's doping, and their team doctor through the glory years, Richard Freeman, getting struck off by the general medical council for his conduct while working in cycling. After a spell at Ineos Sport, overseeing Jim Ratcliffe's sporting empire, and an unsuccessful period with Manchester United football club, Brailsford returned to the cycling team on the eve of the Tour de France with all the enthusiasm of a kid in a sweet shop, according to team CEO John Allert. But since the start in Lille, allegations from Team Sky's past have stalked Brailsford. It concerns their head carer, a Slovenian called David Rozman, who had been involved in the Operation Aderlass doping investigation relating to alleged text messages between him and Dr Mark Schmidt, subsequently jailed for doping offences, shortly before the 2012 Tour. Brailsford and the team initially said they would not be commenting on the allegations but today (Thursday) they confirmed Rozman had been contacted by the International Testing Agency regarding the alleged texts, initially informally. Lionel Birnie delves into the background, examines Brailsford's comeback and talks to David Walsh about why he has more questions to answer about what went on in 2012.

Ruthie Blum, Columnist at JNS I spoke with Ruthie Blum from Israel about the state of the war Israel is currently engaged in against Iran and its various proxies, including most recently very, very devastating attacks against the so-called Houthi rebels in Yemen in the aftermath of continuing attacks by them against the Jewish state. What is coming next? The open question with respect to a so-called ceasefire in Gaza and the ambitions of jihadis now in charge of Syria and perhaps headed towards Jordan and maybe even Israel itself. David Walsh, President, The Takota Group I spoke with Dave Walsh about the Biden administration's latest example of comporting itself as though it's not going anywhere, making pronouncements about greenhouse gas emissions for the next 10 years and further pouring money in the form of various subsidies into electrification schemes that will not meet the requirements of the future, nor provide the reliable grid we absolutely must have. Philippe Karsenty, Author of “2017, dernière chance avant le grand remplacement” I spoke with Philippe Karsenty of France about developments in his country, ranging from the arsonist's attacks against, it appears, Notre Dame to many other sacred places, churches, cathedrals, and the like throughout the country. The Islamists who seem to be behind many of them, as well as other problems that France is now confronting, possibly giving rise to conditions that will translate into real crises in the nation, perhaps even civil war, according to some. We also talked about other political developments in that nation, whether Francois Macron will fall from power altogether and the emergence of his new prime minister as possibly a force to be reckoned with; much interest there and much to continue to monitor.

Were that to come to pass? We examined, in particular, the prospects for a further leap forward toward such global governance at the upcoming Summit of the Future in New York City. David Walsh, Managing Director of Takota group Dave Walsh analyzed the nature of the choice between the Democratic and Republican tickets on matters involving energy security for me. In particular, the evidence that Kamala Harris's attachment to the Green New Deal and all that flows from it in terms of energy insecurity continues despite her professed openness for the first time in a decade to fracking. This is seemingly an example of election conversion on the topic, given the importance it plays in the outcome of the presidential race in the swing state of Pennsylvania.

This is seemingly an example of election conversion on the topic, given the importance it plays in the outcome of the presidential race in the swing state of Pennsylvania. Col. John Mills, Author of "War Against The Deep State" I had a chance to visit with Colonel John Mills on what he characterizes as 14 different fronts in what is emerging as World War III. It's underway, and it is increasingly dangerous for this country and our interests around the world, all imperiled by the Chinese Communist Party and its friends. We also talked about the uncertainty as to who is the president of the United States and the evidence now formally documented by three house committees that Joe Biden and his family have taken at least $27 million from foreign powers, including Chinese intelligence. What are the implications of such betrayal, in his case and in the rest of the national security community, given the example being set by our Commander in Chief? The deplorable example being set by our Commander in Chief. Rabbi Pesach Wolicki, Host of Eyes on Israel I spoke with Rabbi Pesach Wolicki about the so-called bridging proposal of a ceasefire that the Biden administration is seeking to impose on the government of Israel and why the idea of Israel surrendering control to the extensive smuggling routes that have kept Hamas alive until Israel took the Philadelphia corridor is such a deal breaker and understandably so for Israel and for and should be for us as well. We also visited the situation in northern Israel, and S. benighted U.S. efforts there to make concessions to compel Israel to make concessions to Hezbollah and Iran at the expense of its security and population in northern Israel.

"Hexapodia" Is the Key Insight: by Noah Smith & Brad DeLong

Play Episode Listen Later May 22, 2024 68:44

Noah Smith & Brad DeLong Record the Podcast We, at Least, Would Like to Listen to!; Aspirationally Bi-Weekly (Meaning Every Other Week); Aspirationally an hour...Key Insights:* A number of years ago, Brad DeLong said that it was time to “pass the baton” to “The Left”. How's that working out for us? #actually, he had said that we had passed the baton—that the absence since January 21, 2009 (or possibly January 21, 1993) of Republican negotiating partners meant that sensible centrism produced nothing—that Barack Obama had proposed John McCain's climate policy, Mitt Romney's health care policy, George H.W. Bush's entitlement-and-budget policy, Ronald Reagan's tax policy, and Gerald Ford's foreign policy, and had gotten precisely zero Republican votes for any of those. Therefore the only choice we had was to pass the baton to the Left in the hopes that they could energize the base and the disaffected to win majorities, and then offer strong support where there policies were better than the status quo.* But my major initial take was that the major task was to resurrect a sensible center-right, in which I wished the Niskanen Center good luck, but was not optimistic.* But everyone heard “Brad DeLong says neoliberals should ‘bend the knee'” to THE LEFT…* That is interesting…* Should neoliberals bend the knee?* How has the left been doing with its baton? Not well at all, for anyone who defines “THE LEFT” to consist of former Bernie staffers who regard Elizabeth Warren as a neoliberal sellout.* It has, once again, never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity. * But the conditions that required passing the baton to the left—High Mitch McConnellism, Republican unity saying “NO!” to everything by every Republican to make the Black president look like a weak failure—no longer hold.* And the principal adversaries to good governance and a bright American future are reactionary theocrats, neofascist grifters, and true-believer right-neoliberals to the right and cost-disease socialists to the left.* But in the middle, made up of ex-left-neoliberals and nearly all other right-thinking Americans, are we supply-side progressives.* Instead, there is a governing coalition, in the Senate, composed of 70 senators, 50 Democrats and 20 Republicans, from Bernie Sanders through J.D. Vance—a supply-side progressive or supply-side Americanist coalition.* It is therefore time to snatch the baton back, and give it to the supply-side progressivist policy-politics core, and then grab as many people to run alongside that core in the race as we possibly can.* The Niskanen Center cannot be at the heart of the supply-side progressivist agenda because they are incrementalists and critics by nature.* The principal business of “Leftist” activists over the past five years really has been and continues to be to try to grease the skids for the return of neofascism—just as the principal business of Ralph Nader and Naderites in 2000 was to grease the skids for upper-class tax cuts, catastrophic financial deregulation, and forever wars.* &, as always, HEXAPODIA!References:* Beauchamp, Zack. 2019.
