In this webcast/podcast series simply called "Underrepresented"—a series recorded and produced in conjunction with our good friends, Sean Martin and Marco Ciappelli —we want to merge conversations and actions. In this first episode, we get to speak with someone well outside of the InfoSec industry, Chris’ dad, Doug Cochran. Doug is joined by someone that does amazing things for the greater community and helping those less fortunate to get a voice and to be heard - co-founder of the ICMCP, Larry Whiteside Jr.
By Sean Martin and Marco Ciappelli with Chris Cochran and Ronald Eddings For some, catching that big break in life may seem like it was a miracle. For everyone else, it usually comes down to focused research and working hard to turn that dream into reality. But there is one more thing necessary—a magic ingredient if you will—for this process to start: knowing about that opportunity because someone, somehow, introduced that possibility to us. Someone, that one day, told us that we could have that dream—and that we could make it come true. Our destiny can, unfortunately, be defined for us by many factors: The place we are born (country, state, town) How we are raised (two, one or no parents) The languages we speak (multiple, native, sign, none) How much money and resources we have (wealthy, comfortable, poor) Where and what types schools we go to (university, secondary, primary, none) And many more factors, including gender, race, religion, neuro-makeup, disabilities, and eventually age. There has been an increase in conversation around the topic of diversity and inclusion—something that this group of podcast/webcast hosts believes in wholeheartedly. But while there are still more actions to see beyond the talk, we think there is *some* progress being made on this front. However, we know that there is a very long way to go, and we want to try to help by facilitating the process, providing a platform, and opening up the conversation in a safe place for people to come and make their voices heard. We want to let people know that opportunities and dreams are out there and achievable for everyone. Many organizations and people are devoting their lives to this cause, and we want to hear from them. We want to listen to their stories, their struggles, and their achievements. In this webcast/podcast series simply called “Underrepresented”—a series recorded and produced in conjunction with our good friends, Chris Cochran and Ronald Eddings—we want to merge conversations and actions. In this, and all future episodes, we intend to bring clear examples of all pockets of underrepresentation. We want to shine a light along the path with case studies to draw upon and actions that can be taken to go beyond diversity and inclusion. Together we talk about the bigger challenges with diversity, inclusion, and underrepresentation. What can be done to make the InfoSec industry more available to more people from all walks of life? We look at the correlation and connections to the InfoSec world through the eyes and the perspective of a waste management industry. We also hit some hard truths and bring some real-world examples to bear as we begin to scratch the surface on this ever-important topic. Ultimately we will need to find a solution to this issue if we want to have a fighting chance to reduce the skills gap in the tech industry, and most of all, if we want to live in a society that is fair and equal for all. Alright, enough here. Let’s get down to business. Go on now—press play. _________________ Learn more about this column's sponsors: Bugcrowd: www.itspmagazine.com/company-directory/bugcrowd Find more An InfoSec Life stories, including this UnderRepresented Series in collaboration with Chris Cochran and Ronald Eddings: > On ITSPmagazine: www.itspmagazine.com/an-infosec-life > On HackerValleyStudio: http://hackervalley.studio/
Guest Host Andy Bonillo interviews Special Guest Devon Bryan, the Executive Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer for the National IT Organization of the Federal Reserve System, about the urgency in increasing diversity in the Cyber Security industry. Bryan gives his opinion on the diversity of the person vs. the diversity of thought in tackling the complex Cyber Security Threats Fortune 500 companies are facing today. Today, there's much to be said for diversity of thought and diversity of perspective in tackling the threats from cyberspace but Bryan explains what else is needed for Cyber Security teams to be successful. He opines on best practices, innovative processes and technologies he prefers, and opines on wether or not diversity problem is more acute in certain critical infrastructures and sectors. Don't miss Devon Bryan, Co-founder of the International Consortium of Minority Cybersecurity Professionals (ICMCP) on Episode #94 of TF7 Radio.
Today I am joined by two long-time cyber professionals doing great things to help fill the cyber talent pool with candidates from all walks of life: Julian Waits from Devo and ICMCP, and Ed Moyle from The Prelude Institute. If you’ve listened to some of our podcasts and webcasts here on ITSPmagazine, you’ve likely heard me say that we are going through the cybersecurity hiring process with blinders on — meaning that we often search for candidates who look or sound a certain way, come from a certain professional background, have a specific certification, or are able to perform a specific set of technical tasks. Having had many conversations with a number of folks looking squarely at the cybersecurity talent gap, I wholeheartedly believe that we are still wearing blinders. Sure, we may have opened the blinders up a bit to let a little light in on gender and race, but I think we’re still missing the main point. InfoSec isn’t the first industry faced with a shortage in the workforce, so we shouldn’t try to solve the problem as if we were. As an example, there’s a tremendous need for nurses — and the medical industry has found a way to attract more people: through specialized programs, trade schools, and even commercials on television designed to let people know these jobs — and the training required — exists. The nursing role has many parallels to the InfoSec role … and my guests and I talk through some of the scenarios to uncover how we might learn — and leverage what is already working — from other industries and roles, such as that of nursing.
Mary Chaney is Vice President of the International Consortium of Minority Cybersecurity Professionals (ICMCP), founder of her own law practice at The Law Offices of Mary N. Chaney - The CyberSecurity Law Firm of Texas and a former special agent with the FBI, working in the cyber crimes unit in Los Angeles. She has also had a successful corporate career in information security for companies like Discovery, Comcast, Johnson & Johnson and GE Capital. The combination of all this experience and her varied interests has led to where she is now, running her law firm and using every skill she learned throughout her career. This episode is a fabulous opportunity to learn from a woman who spent the majority of her career in the male dominated fields of information systems and security and law enforcement. And as an African American woman, she has often been the "only" in rooms and in meetings in several ways. In addition to working in her law firm and at ICMCP helping to improve both diversity and inclusion (hear more about the difference in this episode) in her industry, Mary also mentors a group of about 30 young women and men in areas of confidence, leadership and more. She looks at it as a responsibility to prepare the next generation of leaders to step into their roles ready to face challenges, as and as a way to give her mentees a role model she never really had. Mary's ideas about leadership and generosity are still, sadly, unique in our corporate world where independence and territorial behaviour still seem to rule. I know you'll be inspired by her perspective!

Soft Skills are Key in Cyber and Technology Careers! At only 26 years old Deidre Diamond was the Vice President of Sales for the national technical staffing agency Motion Recruitment, in charge of leading the hiring, training and development of hundreds of technical recruiters from an entry-level college graduate hiring model. Diamond took this almost 15 years of technical staffing experience to Rapid7 (NYSE:RPD) as their first Vice President of Sales. Diamond’s leadership resulted in Rapid7’s new sales revenue increasing from $800,000 to $20M in under four years—consequently creating $45M in new revenue generation. Diamond then became the CEO of Percussion Software, where she led the new content marketing software releases and learned the operations and execution of digital marketing, content marketing and web development. Diamond is now the Founder and CEO of national cyber security staffing company CyberSN and the not-for-profit organization #brainbabe (brainbabe.org). Because Diamond herself was hired as an entry-level college graduate and trained to lead technology service and cybersecurity organizations, she believes the tech community needs to expand its awareness of what it means “to be in tech” and “to be in cybersecurity.” In 2016, Deidre joined ICMCP as a Strategic Board member, working to include more diversity hires in the cyber security community.
