In this episode of the Bikepack Adventures podcast, I have the chance to speak with JaBig, while sitting in my backyard watching my dog run circles around us. I had first messaged him a year ago, but he was quite busy and we couldn't make it work. It just so happened that this year we had the chance to connect while he was staying with his sister in Ottawa, before taking on his next challenge cycling from North Cape, Norway to Tarifa, Spain, in a continued effort to fundraise for World Bicycle Relief. With a goal of raising $1 million in his lifetime, JaBig has been taking on some pretty spectacular challenges. In 2017 he cycled 17, 763km across Canada on a fixed gear bike. In 2022 he circum-cycled the lower 48 of the United States, riding 13 255km. JaBig is so much more than a bike tourer. He does an amazing job of blending his life before cycling (BC) where he worked as a DJ in Montreal, Canada with his passion for bikes, often doing guest DJ gigs along the way to raise money for his charity of choice. JaBig, a.k.a. Jean-Aimé Bigirimana, is known for his huge rides, including a 15-month, 17,000 km trek on a fixie across Canada that took him to the Arctic Ocean. His most recent adventure was around the U.S., from the northwest, down the Pacific coast, east across southern states, north on the Atlantic side and then back west. In this episode, JaBig looks back on his big ride. He's a great storyteller with tales about bike theft, serious attention to gear, harrowing rides through unwelcoming areas and the great generosity of the people he met. He has some eye-opening insights into differences between Canadians and Americans. TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ JABIG # 074 - PART 1 JaBig shares with us his life as a young man in Africa and making the transition of moving to Canada. His DJ career begins with teenage dances and two stereos. He teaches himself the art of blending vinyl, CD's and cassettes. The most important part in the beginning of his music journey was the selection of music. He always wanted to have all the right music that would make the people happy. TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ JABIG # 074 - PART 2 JaBig is one of the first DJ's to utilize the internet to its fullest in the early part of the 2000's. He saw a massive opening with a new platform called YouTube to showcase and stream his mixes. He took the risk and uploaded his mix on there and it took off immediately. Years and years of working on Youtube he has uploaded over 800 different mixes. Over time and copyright control with all the takedowns he now has about one hundred mixes up and adding new ones all the time. With the ever changing parts to the business he is constantly adapting. He also shared with us that his passion is Cycling. JaBig is getting ready to cycle across the United States for Charity which will take him about six months to complete. JaBig @jabig was born in Rwanda. His family, looking for a better life, moved to South Africa and then decided to Immigrate to Canada 18 years ago. Now, this Montreal based DJ is living his best life mixing tunes and riding bikes. JaBig’s YouTube channel, with almost 400,000 subscribers, features his DEEP & DOPE DJ mixes which are mostly recordings of his live sets. in 2016, as a personal challenge, he decided to ride his fixed gear road bike across Canada… in the winter. The short video, Escape, put together by MEC, shows JaBig riding the ice roads in northern Canada and demonstrates some of the challenges he had tackling this great and vast country in the winter.Last August, JaBig cycled across Canada, for the second time, to raise funds for World Bicycle Relief, a global charity that distributes bicycles to front line health care workers and schoolchildren in rural Africa. He was just 5 months into a round the globe tour, riding for the same cause, when the pandemic struck. At the recommendation of the Canadian Government he decided to return home.In this episode, we chat about the importance of following your own path and living the life that you choose, the simplicity of life on the bike as well as some of the highlights from his journeys. JaBig also discusses the privilege we have here in the west to be able to recreate on bicycles whereas, in other parts of the world, they can mean the all the difference in a person’s quality of life. JaBig is a Montreal based cycling DJ who currently is on a cross-Canada bike ride to raise money for World Bicycle Relief, a charity that has distributed close to 500 000 bikes in Africa. Jean-Aimé Bigirimana, DJ JaBig, was born in Rwanda but emigrated to Kenya and South Africa at a young age before permanently settling in Canada.
