Relax with Meditation
Should we live a quiet life or a life full of challenges?

If we are growing old we dislike more and more any challenge… And for the Hindu Religion is that we change from Raja to Tamas. We change from activity, passion, to laziness, to be deluded… And this is even true when we are young and desire to live a calm and peaceful life…. Because we don't like challenges. For the Hindu Religion is the goal to be in Satva or in a state of harmony, balance, joy, and intelligence.Without facing our worldly desires we never can reach that state of Satva. Even we meditate like crazy still our worldly desires bring us to fall, like all the well-known Gurus with their Sex scandals.Through meditation, we can reach temporary the state of Satva, and afterward, we still have our worldly desires. After the Hindu teaching there exists nobody on this planet who doesn't have all 3 Gunas,- Tamas, Raja, and Satva. We can see every challenge/conflict as a step forward to peace and more balance.Because we can use the conflicts and challenges to purify ourselves from our worldliness. If we have contact with God we deepen in our worst times our relationship with God and even find great spirituality much easier than in peaceful times. So that every challenge will be on purpose.  Sri Aurobindo said: God will drive you out of every oasis to go through the desert to find even a better oasis. And if you want peace in life, remember when you are in the box… you will have that, but no life anymore. We can find peace, serenity, and bliss only inside of ourselves and for that God has created the meditation. We should participate total in a worldly life and find our peace, serenity in our meditation….  My Video: Should we live a quiet life or a life full of challenges? https://youtu.be/qItDv7pBRJwMy Audio: https://divinesuccess.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/Podcast.B/Should-we-live-a-quiet-life-or-a-life-full-of-challenges.mp3

Krishna says, "I have created four varnas (divisions) based on differentiation of gunas and karmas, but know Me to be the non-doer and immutable (4.13). Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras perform karmas according to the gunas springing from their nature" (18.41). Firstly, our divisive mind builds hierarchies around us. Secondly, falsehood is nothing but a manipulated truth. Together, a falsehood was built that the divisions are based on birth and are hierarchical. But, the simple truth is that humans are of four types because of the gunas and karmas. Moreover, this division is not a tool to judge a person. These facts need to be kept in mind while understanding verses dealing with varnas or castes which still dominate the social and political fabric of our society. While explaining gunas, Krishna says, "Three gunas of satva, rajas and tamas bind the soul (14.5). Satva binds through attachment to knowledge (14.6). Rajas binds the embodied soul through attachment to action (14.7). Tamas binds through sleep" (14.8). Essentially, each guna binds us in one way or another. One guna may be dominant in us throughout our lives determining our personality. But, each day of our life is a product of the interplay of these gunas.  For example, when we are given a task in the office which requires additional knowledge, satva helps us to attain it. Rajas is the desire to execute tasks as per the deadline. By the end of the day when we get tired, tamas helps us with sleep. Similarly, if we are driving to a new place, knowing the direction is satvik and driving is rajas. Binding is another name for guna and dependence on them is bondage. Golden handcuffs don't make bondage any better than iron ones. Guna-ateeth is transcending this bondage to attain ultimate freedom where gunas become tools.

Krishna explained about the three gunas or characteristics of nature viz. Satva, Rajo and Tamo on various occasions in the Bhagavad Gita. He declares that no living being on earth or the higher celestial abodes of this material realm is free from the influence of these three gunas (18.40). This implies that at any given point of time we are under the influence of one guna or another.   Krishna cautioned (3.27-3.29) that karmas (actions) in all situations are performed by the gunas; one who is deluded by ahankaar thinks 'I am kartha (doer)'. One who knows that gunas interact with gunas is not attached. Gunas have the ability to hypnotize us and under their influence we are attached to the functions of gunas. In chapters seventeen and eighteen, some functions of gunas like worship, food, yagna, tapah (of body, speech and mind), daan (charity), knowledge, karma, kartha, intellect, dhruti (fortitude) and happiness, were explained.   Krishna gave a way forward and encouraged us to transcend these gunas to be guna-ateeth who are alike in happiness and distress; who are established in the self; remain the same amidst pleasant and unpleasant events; accept both criticism and praise with equanimity; remain the same in respect and insult; treat both friend and foe alike; and abandon all delusions of karta (14.24-14.25).   While the nature of karta depends on the guna under whose influence the karta is at a given point of time, Krishna explained that the guna-ateeth abandons the delusion of karta altogether. Similarly, in the context of sukh (happiness), the types of happiness vary depending on the guna. But for a guna-ateeth, there is no preference for a particular sukh nor resistance to any dukh. In a nutshell, it is realising that life is an interplay of gunas.

After elaborating on the four schools of thought on the subject of renunciation, Krishna says, "Now hear My conclusion on the subject of renunciation which is threefold" (18.4). From the subsequent verses, clarity comes that renunciation is of three types viz. Satva, Rajo and Tamo renunciation. Krishna further says, "Actions based upon yagna (sacrifice), daan (charity), and tapah (penance) should never be abandoned; they must certainly be performed. Indeed, acts of yagna, daan and tapah sanctify even the wise (18.5). These activities must be performed without attachment and expectation for rewards. This is My definite and supreme verdict" (18.6). At the level of ignorance, one keeps collecting material things, gathering power, fame and influence. Renunciation is the next stage. One might treat it as a barter like donating to get fame or to attain punya (virtue) etc. Renunciation might also happen when one goes through despondency like Arjun's idea of renouncing the Kurukshetra battle. As all of us go through these dilemmas, a lot is said in Bhagavad Gita about tyag and sanyas. Krishna spoke about renunciation on many occasions. He said that one cannot attain siddhi (perfection) by mere renunciation (3.4); one should always be a nitya sanyasi (perpetual renunciant), i.e. one who neither hates nor desires; is free from the pairs of opposites (dwandwa-ateeth) and is easily liberated from all entanglements (5.3); he is a sanyasi and yogi who does his bounden duty without depending on the fruits of action (karmaphal) but not the one without action (6.1). These teachings are again reflected here when he said that actions like yagna, daan and tapah should be performed without attachment. He is referring to the mental entanglements to the karma or physical possessions. Similarly, performing karma without the expectation of karmaphal is another core teaching of the Bhagavad Gita.

Krishna says, "Three gunas of satva, rajas and tamas bind Imperishable Dweller (14.5). Of these, the stainless satva binds through attachment to happiness and knowledge (14.6). Know rajas to be raagaatmak (nature of passion) giving birth to desires and it binds the embodied soul by attachment to action (14.7). Know that tamas to be born of ignorance, deluding all embodied beings; it binds through heedlessness, laziness and sleep" (14.8). Essentially, the three gunas (characteristics born of prakriti) are responsible to bind the atma which is the beej (seed) of Paramatma to the physical body. Krishna further says, "Satva attaches to happiness, rajas to action while tamas indeed, having veiled knowledge, attaches to heedlessness (14.9). Sometimes satva is prominent, overpowering rajas and tamas; sometimes rajas over satva and tamas; and sometimes tamas over satva and rajas" (14.10). This implies that we are under the spell of the combination of these gunas in various proportions at various points of time. Like the three primary colours viz. red, blue and green produce billions of colours, these three gunas are responsible for the various behaviours we see around us. The next question is how to know as to which guna is binding us at a given point of time. Krishna clarifies, "One may know that satva is prevalent when the light of wisdom shines through all the gates of the body (14.11). Domination of rajas causes greed, activity, restlessness, desire and starting of action (karmanam) (14.12). Tamas as the ruling guna produces darkness, inertness, heedlessness and delusion" (14.13). We sleep when he dominate. Rajas drives us to perform and achieve. Satva is responsible for learning and acquiring knowledge. Hence, gunas are the real karta (doer) for every action that emanates from us. Awareness is nothing but identifying the guna under whose control we are at any given moment.

Krishna says, "Know that prakriti (nature) and purush (spirit) are both beginningless. Gunas (qualities) and vikar (evolution or change) are born of prakriti (13.20). Prakriti is responsible for cause and effect; purush is responsible for the experience of sukh (pleasure) and dukh (pain) (13.21). Under the influence of prakriti, the purush keeps experiencing the gunas. Attachment to the gunas is the cause of birth in various wombs" (13.22). Evolution is the norm of prakriti where situations of yesterday are different than those of today. While change is the norm, we suffer because of our resistance to change as it involves changing ourselves. Living in the present moment without the burden of the past and expectations from the future is the way to transcend this. Prakriti is responsible for 'cause and effect' which is usually referred to as physical laws. The purush experiences them as pleasure and pain. When a stone is thrown up, it comes down and when a seed is sown, sprouting happens and the list goes on. When flowers bloom, it's our interpretation that makes them beautiful. Similarly, a scene of death or destruction would be interpreted as painful. Based on many factors, the interpretations vary from person to person for the same situation. As a result, one goes through pleasures and pain; mood swings and blame games. Krishna earlier described (2.14)  such interpretations as transient (anitya) and advised us to learn to tolerate them. Satva, Tamo and Rajo gunas are born of prakriti. Under their influence, the purush keeps experiencing these gunas in various proportions at various times. This experience or illusion makes us believe that we are the doer (kartha). All the human interactions are the result of the interaction between the gunas. Krishna has repeatedly advised us to transcend these gunas to become guna-ateeth (the one who has transcended the gunas).

Krishna mentioned about three gunas (characteristics) which are born of prakriti (nature) and all of us are made to perform different karmas (actions) in different ways by them (3.5). In reality, all karmas are performed by gunas (3.27) and these karmas are nothing but the interactions between gunas. Satva guna is the attachment to knowledge and being poise; rajo guna is the attachment to action and tamas leads to ignorance and laziness. In this regard, Krishna further says, "All the manifestations of Satva, Tamo and Rajo gunas emerge from me. Though they are in Me, I am not in them" (7.12). This paradoxical verse can be understood with the metaphor of clouds and sky where the clouds are in the sky but the sky is not in the clouds and the clouds can't exist without the sky. It's like waves being in the ocean but the ocean is not in the waves. He further elaborates that deluded by the three modes of nature, mortal beings are unable to know Me as eternal and beyond all gunas (7.13). Krishna earlier also cautioned that these gunas have the ability to hypnotise us (3.29). The general impression is that one should attain poise satva guna by shedding rajo and tamo gunas. A point to be noted is that each guna has a unique spell and thus, we should be aware of them to transcend all these gunas to attain the eternal state. Krishna assures that My divine Maya (illusion), made of gunas is difficult to overcome. But those who surrender unto Me, transcend this Maya (7.14). Essentially, we can choose the life of surrender (samarpan) to paramatma to transcend the maya to lead a life of joy or one of struggle (sangharsh) to be under its influence and keep chasing mirages of maya leading to misery.

Krishna says that (3.27) " Karmas (actions) in all situations are performed by the gunas which are qualities or characters of nature; one who is deluded by ahankaar thinks 'I am doer'. One (3.28) with true insight into the distinctions between gunas and karmas knows that gunas interact with gunas and hence he's not attached." All actions being nothing but interactions between gunas is a common thread in the Gita. The three gunas namely Satva, Tamo and Rajo are present in each one of us in different proportions. Satva guna is the attachment to knowledge; Rajo guna is the attachment to action and Tamas leads to ignorance and laziness. It should be noted that no guna is superior or inferior to any other guna; they are just gunas. For example, if one has a high percentage of Rajo guna, they would be deeply inclined towards action and would not be able to sleep, thus, a percentage of Tamas is needed to sleep. Secondly, we need to be aware of the guna that is dominating us at the present moment. For example, under the influence of Tamas, one would tend to be a couch potato and watch TV. On the other hand, if their spouse were in the Rajo guna, then he or she would like to go out for some shopping, a movie or visit friends. Subsequent situations may be due to the interaction between the tamo and rajo gunas. Similar situations driven by the interaction of gunas occur at workplaces too. Krishna explains (14.22-14.26) that we should be able to transcend gunas to become Guna-ateeth, a state where we are aware of the gunas which are dominating us in the present moment and we remain a mere witness to their interactions in the manifested world.

If we are not karta (doer) for karma (action), then who is karta? Krishna replies (3.5) "No one can stay for even a moment without performing karmas as all are compelled by gunas (characters) born of prakriti (nature) to perform actions." Three atomic particles, namely electron, proton and neutron form the entire physical world. Similarly, three gunas namely Satva, Tamo and Rajo are responsible for driving us to perform actions. In that sense, they are the real karta. Krishna further says (3.6) "The individuals who forcefully control the organs of action, but whose mind rotates around thoughts of sense objects is a hypocrite and deluding himself." We are brought up and governed by a system of reward for good behaviour and punishment for bad behaviour, both at the familial and societal level. This results in a split personality with no coherence between our inner and outer selves. For example, when someone hurts us, we may restrain ourselves in terms of words and actions, for the sake of good behaviour but the mind gets filled with hatred, regrets and a sense of injustice. Krishna is never in favour of suppression or numbing which he calls mithya (delusion), but instead, advocates for attaining samatva (equanimity) where hurt and praise are treated as equal and hence dichotomy disappears. At the core, nobody wants to live in this misery, but very few know how to come of it. That's why Krishna immediately gives a solution (3.8) to engage one's organs of action in karma yoga (yoga of action) without attachment. The crux is 'without attachment'. It's performing karma without attachment to karta with the realisation that gunas are the real karta; performing karma without attachment to karma-phal (fruits of action). It's the detachment of controller part of senses from the sense objects. Unconditional love emerges when attachment goes.

Bhaj Govindam  This is a verse written by Nityananda is beautiful. It is describing the outwardly behaviours of the truly realised, a state where the self fades and only God remains, where the oneness with all becomes a reality.  The normal norm of the society don't apply to him and he remains maast in his own masti. This ones behaviour can not be understood by the masses who are bound by the rules of the so called cultured society. He comes across as a dim wit, mad man or even scary to the eyes of the worldly. The one who revels in God and knows the secrets of this universe, can no longer or no longer wants to indulge the worldly people and their norms of normality. The awakened are difficult to understand, but then Who can understand the one who has understood ‘That One'. The Twenty-Second verse said to me - Shruti Says

Krishna says that there is no kartha for any karma. Karma is in fact the result of the interaction among the three Gunas namely Satva, Rajo and Tamas which are a part of Prakriti - the nature. Krishna advises Arjun to transcend these Gunas to be free from sorrows. Arjun wanted to know how to be Guna-ateeth(transcending Gunas) and what a person would be like when he attains this state. Dwandwa-ateeth {transcending polarities), Drishta(witness) and Samatva (equanimity) are the qualities that are enshrined in the Gita. Krishna indicates that a combination of these three constitutes Guna-ateeth According to Krishna, a person who has attained the state of Guna-ateeth is one who realizes that gunas are interacting with gunas and therefore, remains a saakshi(witness). He neither craves for a particular Guna nor is he averse to any other one. Guna-ateeth is simultaneously Dwandwa-ateeth also. After understanding the polarities of pleasure and pain, he remains neutral to both. He is neutral to praise and criticism as he realises that these are products of the three gunas. Similarly, he is neutral to friends and enemies realising that we are friends to ourselves and also enemies to ourselves. The physical world is polar and swings are natural. On the other hand a swinging pendulum also needs a stationary point. Lord Krishna is hinting at reaching that stationary point from where we can just witness the swinging without being part of it i.e. polarities. Guna-ateeth gives equal importance to gold, stone and a handful of soil. This metaphorical comparison conveys that he doesn't assign higher value to one and lower value to another. He values things as they are, not as valued by peers. Krishna further says that Guna-ateeth is one who shuns the feeling of Kartha. This happens when we realise, through our experiences that things are automatic and there is hardly place for Kartha.

Gita Acharan

Most of us believe that we are the cause of all our actions and masters of our destiny. In the Gita, Lord Krishna says that interaction between Gunas (properties/characters) creates Karma, but not due to any Karta. Three Gunas are born out of Prakriti (mother nature) and bind the soul with the physical body. The three Gunas; Satva , Rajo and Tamas are present in each of us in different proportions. Satva Guna is the attachment to knowledge; Rajo Guna is the attachment to action and Tamas leads to ignorance and heedlessness. Just as the combination of Electrons, Protons and Neutrons produce materials with a wide range of properties, the combination of the three gunas is responsible for our nature and actions. One of the Gunas tends to dominate over others in each one of us. In fact, interaction among people is nothing but interactions between the Gunas of the individuals. A magnetic dipole placed in an electro magnetic field rotates along the field. Objects get attracted in a gravitational field. There are so many such physical and chemical properties. Similarly karma happens not due to any kartha but due to gunas. Lord Krishna points out the inbuilt automaticity in the physical word. Even our own physical body operates fairly automatically. While the analogy appears to present a tidy framework to explain the relationship between Gunas and Karma, ‘realisation' of this truth and the transition is possible when own experiences sink in. The main obstacle in this path of realisation is Ahankaar. Our domestication makes us believe that we are the Karta, giving rise to Ahankaar. But in reality, the interaction of these Gunas creates Karma. Lord Krishna says that this responsibility of self-improvement falls squarely on our own shoulders and none other can make this happen.

Shrimad Bhagavata Mahapurana Synopsis of the Fourth Session Bhagavata Pratham Skanda (Book One) Chapter 1 to 6 ————— We bow our heads to the Transcendent Reality, from whom the universe springs up, in whom it abides and into whom it returns.  This age of Kali takes away the purity of peoples heart and is thus difficult to conquer. We turn to you, who confides even his profoundest secrets to their beloved devotees.  ————— Story:  The session started with a story of a King who wanted to know the secret of the bliss possessed by a ‘poor Gaadivan'. He approached him multiple times, but the Gaadivan refused to impart. Till one day the King came as a nobody, waited as a nobody, and sat down as a nobody. When he emptied himself of his lower self and ego, the Gaaidvan made him sit and shared his secret of ‘Never ending bliss'. We enter ‘Shrimad Bhagavata Mahapurana', as a nobody and bring our hearts to Naimisharanya where Shaunakji and his various disciples are listening to Sutadevji. They want to know more about Narad Muni, the boundless Sage.  Narad Muni, is the mind born son of Brahma. It all started when the divine desired creation, when Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh came into existance. After thousands of years of mañana Brahma opened his eyes and came along Narad Muni and many others from his mind. His cycle of decent or ascent, would leave this decision on you, started with a curse from Brahma, when Narad Muni refused to enter the ‘Grahasth Ashram', and desired to just go around singing the glories of the Lord.  - He first became a Gandharva and after being cursed again - He was born as a maid servants son Here, he had the opportunity at a tender age of 5 to serve, holy men during their period of ‘Shetra Vanvas' during the rainy chaturmas. Their company and eating parshad ignited in him the longing for God.  What followed, was a tragedy or blessing, again I leave it on you to decide. For, categorising an event as good or bad is a subjective matter. The saints left, and soon after he lost his mother also. He at this little age started wondering around in search of God. He got a glimpse of what he was looking for, only to be told he was not pure enough to hold this vision any longer and again in this life.  He devoted his life to purifying himself, gained Bhakti, gyan and Vairagya. He broke the Shackles of Karma and on death merged with that Divine and was manifested again as the mind born son of Brahma, the Mukt, boundless Narad Muni. Points to Ponder: One Becomes Many -  Supreme person, who is beyond it all, became Hari, Hara, Virnchi  This entire universe is made up of Satva, Rajas and Tamas. But, the one who made these is beyond the Gunas, rid of all cravings, free from vanity and jealousy and content at heart. He is free from name and form. He is the imperishable seed of various avtars. The avtars of the lord are numerous, all are nothing but the rays of the same divine power. In ‘Shrimad Bhagavata the following are glorified in detail; 1. The four unmarried sons of Brahmā [the Kumāras] also called as Sanat Kumāras.  2. Varaha avatar (Boar) 3. Devarṣi Nārada, who is a great sage among the demigods 4. Nara  5. Nārāyaṇa 6. Lord Kapila, foremost among perfected beings. He gave an exposition of the creative elements and metaphysics to Āsuri Brāhmaṇa. 7. Dattatreya, the son of the sage Atri. He was born from the womb of Anasūyā, who prayed for an incarnation. 8. Yajña, the son of Prajāpati Ruci and his wife Ākūti. 9. King Ṛiṣabha, son of King Nābhi and his wife Merudevī. 10. King Pṛithu who cultivated the land to yield various produce, and for that reason the earth was beautiful and attractive. 11. Matsya, The form of a fish. 12. Kūrma, The form of a tortoise. 13. Dhanvantari. 14. Jaganmohini. 15. Nṛsiṁha - The man lion form. 16. Vāmana, the form of a dwarf brāhmaṇa. 17. Parashu Rama.  18. Sri Rama, the son of...

Spiritual talk given on June 4, 2017 at the Santa Barbara Vedanta Temple by Swami Harinamananda, visiting from the San Diego Center. The effects of the three gunas(Satva, Rajas and Tamas), the different states of mind which operate in all of us, are explored in this talk. We learn to be aware of which quality is acting at different times, how it influences our actions, and how our actions can change the operative guna when we choose to do so. Excellent talk!

Sad news today a very talented producer from Angola name Eddhi Cheq passed away a few days back and had to do a special dedication mix to him as I have been a big supporter of this young lad from the get go , His sound was his own with great depths of African Ritual atmosphere through music , his drums patterns was so warm and very rumbling to say the least and also released his first projects on Aluku Records way back in 2012 and has had further releases on D.M Recordings and Kazukuta with so much projects to come in 2016 and was gonna branch out on more label's to grow the vision he wanted for Mwango , so young and passed away in his early 20's who was also a proud father and a proud son which my heart goes out to his close friends and family right now. Please do check out the Cheq with his two different sounds such as his "Mwango Ritual" for the more afro deep, tribal ritual rural lovers and his "Heartistic" which was afro soul and ambient vibes in his own fashion and a bit like Boddhi Satva's Ancestral Soul sound ,he based his outlook like one of his hero's in SA Problem Child with two styles . Kristian Hernandez continues to put Manila on the map. This time it's with his second adidas-backed regional tour of parties under the name Breathe And Stop called Laced Up featuring 3 of the world's most critically acclaimed turntablists TONY TOUCH (Rocksteady Crew /NYC), APOLLO (Invisibl Skratch Piklz / Triple Threat Djs / SF), and VINROC (5th Platoon / Triple Threat Djs / SF). The tour has already stopped in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Saigon, and is now heading to Kristian's home base Manila, at club TIME in Makati on November 27. The vibrations from the subwoofers are sure to shake and rattle the margarita glasses next door at Chihuahua that night! Hernandez's latest mix is a riveting ride of complex rhythms, heart-stopping breaks, and heavenly harmonies by the likes of Osunlade, Boddhi Satva, Atjazz, Omar, Ezel, Q-Tip, Zed Bias, and Maddslinky.   If you've still got a nob, crank it.

There's something about South Africa...  The country has been on the tip of everyone's tongue lately.  We've seen countless big musical acts perform there and we've heard countless productions and DJ sets come out of the continent's most progressive country.  To top it all off, the eyes of the world are now on South Africa as the World Cup 2010 kicks off with all of its excitement and fanfare.   Well we've caught South Africa 2010 fever as well here at MUSIC & WINE.  This month, we are showing the football matches on the big screens at Martinis in the Mandarin Oriental; we've got Foosball tournaments organized at the front of the room every Saturday; and we are featuring South African wines by Nederberg at M&W all month long. Even our music has got Africa written all over it, with Part 1 of a special mix this week that includes tracks by MAW, Bhoddi Satva, Rancido, Black Coffee, Abicah Soul (feat Julius the Mad Thinker), Art Jones, and dunnEASY (remixed by Hallex M). Stay tuned for Part 2 of this mix coming next week.  Ke Nako!!!   Football + Foosball + Nugz...  Check out the photos
