Modern Christianity tends to champion Bible worship over Christ worship, and in this episode, we are joined by Keith Giles to discuss the implications of essentially replacing Christ with the Bible. Keith is a former pastor who “left the pulpit to follow Jesus.” He is the author of notable books such as Sola Mysterium, Jesus Unbound, and Jesus Undefeated, the podcast host of Heretic Happy Hour, Apostates Anonymous, and Second Cup with Keith, and is the Founder of the Square 1 Community. Having been self-taught, Keith has insight into what isn't being taught in seminary school, and in our conversation, he explains the difference between education and indoctrination, as well as that between faith and certainty. He breaks down the Jesus-centric approach to scripture and what it truly means when it's said that scripture is God-breathed. Tune in to hear Keith's take on the fallibility of humans and the Christ-centric way we should approach the Bible.Key Points From This Episode: The implications of the Bible becoming the modern Christian's God. The danger of indoctrination in seminary school. The difference between education and indoctrination. The undeniable mystery of God. The difference between faith and certainty. The heresy of replacing Christ with the Bible. Keith breaks down Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is God-breathed…” The importance of considering human fallibility when approaching the Bible. The Anabaptists' Jesus-centric approach to scripture. Many verses in the Bible are challenging because they seem to say one thing, but after learning more of the context, you then gain a deeper understanding of the meaning. In this episode, we dissect a puzzling verse of scripture, 1 Timothy 2:15. Paul's statements have often been misunderstood or taken out of context to insinuate that women's salvation is contingent upon bearing children. It has often been used to make women feel that the only way they can fulfill their purpose in the body of Christ is through childbearing. By looking at the historical and cultural context of the time and location, we can clear the confusion and see that this verse has nothing to do with salvation, personal worth, or value in the kingdom of God. In this episode, we cover: The Historical reality of childbirth Artemis worship in ancient Greece The backlash to Paul in Ephesus Jesus Unbound *New episodes released every other Monday
In this finale episode, I ask bestselling author Keith Giles some of the questions that I've heard most often from folks who are deconstructing. Why did Jesus have to die? What happened on the cross? What do I do with the resurrection? Where did this monster version of God come from? What does it mean to be born again? And many other questions. Near the end of the conversation, Keith turned the tables and asked me a few questions about my experiences creating The Messy Spirituality Podcast and what it feels like here at the end of that journey. Keith Giles is a former pastor who left the pulpit to follow Jesus. He is the author of the bestselling "Jesus Un" series which includes: "Jesus Untangled", "Jesus Unbound", "Jesus Unveiled", "Jesus Undefeated", "Jesus Unexpected", and his latest release- "Jesus Unforsaken". Keith is also an insightful teacher, podcaster, and Patheos contributor. In this heartfelt and moving conversation, author Keith Giles and I discuss his transition from holding a view of eternal conscious torment (burning forever in hell) to annihilationism and then to his current view of patristic universalism. We also discuss common objections to ultimate redemption. Keith is one of four co-hosts of the insanely popular Heretic Happy Hour podcast. He has written several excellent books including Jesus Untangled, Jesus Unbound, Jesus Unveiled, Jesus Unexpected, and literally wrote the book on the subject we're going to be talking about today: Jesus Undefeated: Condemning the False Doctrine of Eternal Torment. You can find Keith's Patheos column here. You can find Keith's Amazon author page featuring all of his books here. During this conversation, Keith mentions the following books as resources for further study:Her Gates Will Never Be Shut by Brad Jersak That All Shall Be Saved by David Bentley Hart All You Want to Know About Hell by Steve Gregg Universalism: The Prevailing Doctrine of the Christian Church During Its First Five Hundred Years by J.W. Keith is the prolific author of incredible books like: Jesus Untangled, Jesus Unbound, Jesus Unveiled, and Jesus Undefeated. He is one of four co-hosts of the Heretic Happy Hour podcast, writes a popular column for Patheos, and teaches a variety of courses that help lead people away from toxic theology and towards freedom. His new book, Jesus Unexpected: Ending the End Times to Become the Second Coming, releases on August 25th. In this conversation, we discuss the origin of rapture theology and the end times madness that seems to set in every time anything happens in Israel. We also look at how our preoccupation with the next coming of Christ has obscured our view of the unrecognized second coming through the church. The Mind Renewed : Thinking Christianly in a New World Order
Would many of today's churches be recognisable to the earliest Christians? Did Jesus envisage cathedrals with mitre-adorned bishops or megachurches with suit-wearing pastors? Or has something important been lost—or, at least, obscured from full vision—over the centuries? We are joined by Keith Giles—author of the well-known "Jesus Un..." series—for a bracing conversation on his challenging 2019 book, Jesus Unveiled : Forsaking Church as We Know It for Ekklesia as God Intended. Keith, "who abandoned the pulpit to follow Jesus", shares with us from his experience how it's possible to recapture "being church" through taking Jesus at His word and together encountering Him directly. This week, Keith Giles joins the conversation and asks... What if the Bible is actually keeping us from hearing the word of God? Keith believes that many Christians, think the Bible is the only way to know anything about God. But according to that same Bible, everybody can know God directly through an actual relationship with Jesus. Keith has an urgent call for the followers of Jesus to know Him intimately because the Gospel is not mere information about God, but a transformational experience with a Christ who is closer to us than our own heartbeat. Enjoy. RESOURCES: Jesus Unbound: Liberating the Word of God from the Bible (Book) Heretic Happy Hour (Podcast)
For episode two of our new raw and uncut series "Messy Conversations", I spoke to my friend "Jesus Undefeated" author Keith Giles. We talk about the three dominant afterlife doctrines of the early church, Keith's own evolving views, why it matters what we believe about the afterlife, and how Keith handles very public (and often, mean-spirited) criticism. Keith is a co-host of the Heretic Happy Hour Podcast. Check out Keith's blog here. Keith writes incredible books that challenge, educate, and inspire us to follow Jesus more closely. I highly recommend Jesus Untangled, Jesus Unbound, Jesus Unveiled, and his latest (and possibly, best) book, Jesus Undefeated. Keith helps people navigate the rough road of deconstruction/reconstruction through his comprehensive Back to Square One program. Keith has given himself entirely to the work of writing and podcasting and he is making a real difference in the lives of real people who might otherwise feel alone. Keith Giles is an author and previous guest on Halfway There. Today, Keith stops by to discuss his latest book, Jesus Unbound. We talk about some of the problems with an overemphasis on the Bible and how it may be keeping you from the kind of relationship with God he desires for you. Keith will challenge your ideas, make you think, and lead you closer to God's heart as a result. If you want to hear the entire conversation, become a Patreon supporter at just $5 per month. Our conversation covers: Why he wrote Jesus Unbound: Liberating the Word of God from the Bible Why we doubt our experiences and what God's intention is for us The heart of the New Covenant and how it applies to us today Why we're not disparaging the Bible The problems with how we have been trained to approach Scripture How to interpret “All Scripture is God-breathed…” in 2 Timothy 3:16 How translation into English is interpretation The difference between Jesus and the Bible The relationship from which we read Scripture Great quotes from Keith: We are so stuck on what God was doing 2000 years or more ago that we are incapable of taking a step back and seeing what he might be saying and doing in our lives today. One of the things we're putting between us and God for this little safety net is the Bible. As much as I love the Bible, I love Jesus a million times more. Your picture of God needs to be Christ-shaped. I don't want a more biblical world; I want a more Christlike world.
