Jo Burston is one of Australia's most successful female entrepreneurs. She has launched six businesses, the standout being Job Capital which went from $0 to $ 40 million turnover in five years and has kept her on the list of Australia's top 30 female entrepreneurs since 2013. Jo has worked in partnership with the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C) and Office For Women (OFW) as well as global brands such as Microsoft, Google, EY, PwC and XERO. Jo is passionate about the idea that you can't be what you can't see and uses these programs, as well as her globally recognised social impact business Inspiring Rare Birds, to inspire, support and educate women in business with the goal of providing equal opportunities in entrepreneurship and leadership for everyone.
Jo Burston describes herself as an accidental entrepreneur after waking up at 27 to realise that she needed a serious career as she had some audacious financial goals. Years later after winning an award, Jo returned to her junior and high schools in Sydney to connect and learn directly from students about what they envisioned as an "entrepreneur" which was a catalyst in activating her entrepreneurial ventures. Jo explores the idea of growth when we are in unknown and uncomfortable spaces and connects to her purpose knowing it's what she has been put here to do and create positive impact. Knowing that her health is her number 1 commodity, she is an early riser, a lover of healthy and nutritious food and values her sleep far more than she did in her younger years. Jo has a big call for action from our Entrepreneurial Women with Purpose community which we would love for you to take action on.

2019 International Women’s Day. The truth is I love this occasion for two very different reasons.I identify as a feminist in the same way I do a father, husband and business leader.I take great pride in doing my part to increase opportunities for women and girls. That includes combating outdated stereotypes, the consequences of which women and girls have been subjected for the longest time.In fact, standing shoulder to shoulder alongside women like my wife, Jo Burston, Rhonda Brighton-Hall and Julie Bishop (to name a few) and taking daily strides to create an equal footing for women and girls is invigorating.Because we are on a mission. Together.IWD reminds us of our collective contribution and our conviction towards one day declaring that this day we celebrate is redundant.IWD also provides a platform to remind people of a choice that is well within their control.-----------------------------------------------------------Visit https://patreon.com/philhsc to get access to a higher-touch experience!-----------------------------------------------------------Follow PhilHSCWebsite: https://philhsc.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/philhscLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/philhscApple Podcasts: http://apple.co/2pc0GqJSpotify: http://spoti.fi/2AdJcPHGoogle Podcasts: http://bit.ly/2lGHaPKOvercast: http://bit.ly/2HhJAMXPocket Cast: https://pca.st/A7ZKMedium: https://medium.com/@philhscYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHz8Ych3-HVza1_O9vKlVGgIf you'd like to know when new episodes are released or when Phil publishes his weekly blog post, sign up for the insider's email list here.

Growing up in a working-class family in southwest Sydney, Australia with no entrepreneurs in her family, Jo took the traditional and safe route and became an employee of somebody else’s company. She quickly rose to CEO but by age 32, was bored out of her mind. She quit and eventually started Job Capital, a payroll and migration services firm, and built it to more than $40 million in revenue. More startup companies followed and in 2012, she was named a finalist for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Today, Jo still leads Job Capital and she’s also building her newest company, Rare Birds, into a global powerhouse to empower women entrepreneurs around the world. In today’s podcast, Jo shares her inspiring story and the hard fought business lessons that have propelled her career.
For most of the paths we walk, there’s someone who has walked them before us. But where do you find your very own business Yoda - and how can they help on your quest? In this episode, hosts Rob Stone and JV Douglas talk to Jo Burston, MD at Job Capital and Rare Birds, about her journey from mentee to mentor, author and entrepreneur. “I think for me the gold nugget moment was that I saw someone who I identified with personally,” Jo says. “I can say that with hand on heart probably would not have been as successful without a mentor.” Jo explains how her business success led to a wider realisation about the power of mentoring and spurred her on to form the entrepreneurial movement Inspiring Rare Birds. We find out how she’s encouraging up and coming entrepreneurs to find out exactly who it is that they want to become - and how.
