Outsourcing Thought: AI, Ethics & the Future of Human Leadership with Elliott Dellys

In this episode of Future Fit Leadership, I sit down with Elliott Dellys — founder and CEO of Phronesis, Australia’s first B Corp-certified cybersecurity firm. A former intelligence officer turned entrepreneur, Elliott is leading a very different kind of security conversation — one grounded not just in technology, but in ethics, leadership, and culture. Elliott believes cybersecurity is ultimately a people problem — and that the biggest risks we face aren’t just digital, they’re deeply human. From the rise of AI-powered cybercrime to the flawed systems that leave organisations vulnerable, this conversation goes far beyond firewalls. We explore: Why groupthink is one of the most dangerous threats inside modern organisations How fear, conformity, and poor leadership compromise security and innovation The myth of “hacking” — and what most businesses get wrong about risk What it means to build a values-driven company in an industry obsessed with fear His bold take on why Australia won’t meet its 2030 cybersecurity goals — and what real progress would look like Elliott also shares why he donates 10% of profits to social impact, why he built Phronesis around the Greek word for “practical wisdom,” and how philosophy remains his greatest leadership tool. This is a conversation about courage, systems thinking, and the urgent need for leaders who can think beyond compliance — and lead with conscience.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss Plato's Crito and Phaedo, his accounts of the last days of Socrates in prison in 399 BC as he waited to be executed by drinking hemlock. Both works show Socrates preparing to die in the way he had lived: doing philosophy. In the Crito, Plato shows Socrates arguing that he is duty bound not to escape from prison even though a bribe would open the door, while in the Phaedo his argument is for the immortality of the soul which, at the point of death, might leave uncorrupted from the 'prison' of his body, the one escape that truly mattered to Socrates. His example in his last days has proved an inspiration to thinkers over the centuries and in no small way has helped ensure the strength of his reputation.WithAngie Hobbs Professor of the Public Understanding of Philosophy at the University of SheffieldFiona Leigh Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at University College LondonAnd James Warren Professor of Ancient Philosophy at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Corpus Christi College, CambridgeProducer: Simon TillotsonReading list:David Ebrey, Plato's Phaedo: Forms, Death and the Philosophical Life (Cambridge University Press, 2023)Dorothea Frede, ‘The Final Proof of the Immortality of the Soul in Plato's Phaedo 102a-107a' (Phronesis 23, 1978)W. This week, the HBS hosts are joined by Dimitris Vardoulakis (Associate Professor of Philosophy at Western Sydney University) to discuss the phronetic tradition and its significance for ethics, politics, and democracy. Drawing on both Aristotle and Hannah Arendt's understanding of agonism in The Human Condition, Vardoulakis connects what he calls the phronetic tradition to human interaction and instrumental thinking, emphasizing its foundation in uncertainty and disagreement. Our conversation with Vardoulakis traces the historical development of the phronetic and so-called "ineffectual" traditions, examining their roots in ancient philosophy, their transformation through Judeo-Christian metaphysics, and their impact on contemporary political thought. Vardoulakis critiques current approaches to agonistic democracy and advocates for a renewed focus on phronesis as a way to approach ethical and political action without reliance on transcendence or the extremes of anarchism. With references to Spinoza, Derrida, Jon Stewart, and others, this conversation invites listeners to reconsider how we structure collective life in the face of conflict and uncertainty.Full episode notes available at this link:https://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/episode-161-phronesis-and-instrumentality-with-dimitris-vardoulakis-------------------If you enjoy Hotel Bar Sessions podcast, please be sure to subscribe and submit a rating/review! Mr. Duncan, Shane's high school English teacher was the first person to tell him that he believed in him. He changed the trajectory of Shane's life. We, as leaders, can do that for others. Let's proactively look for opportunities to tell the people we're leading that we believe in them. The difference between Nice and Kind feedback. Too often, the people we ask for feedback are nice but not kind. Kind people will tell you things a nice person will not. A kind person will tell you that you have spinach on your teeth. A nice person won't because it's uncomfortable. A kind person will tell us what holds us back, even when it's uncomfortable. A nice person avoids giving us critical feedback because they're worried about hurting our feelings. Champions: “Champions don't create the standards of excellence. The standards of excellence create champions.” “Expecting high performance is a prerequisite to its achievement among those who work with you.  Your high standards and optimistic anticipations will not guarantee a favorable outcome, but their absence will assuredly create the opposite.” The USS Benfold — was one of the worst-performing warships in the US Navy in 1996. The destiny of the USS Benfold changed the day Michael Abrashoff was named commander. Shane was 13 years old. Shane was standing with a group of his friends after school and they were teasing one of his classmates and he was watching. Teachers intervened and it ended quickly. He didn't realize that your dad was parked nearby and was watching. You have to stand up for people who don't have a voice. Warren Buffett: “The big question about how people behave is whether they've got an Inner Scorecard or an Outer Scorecard. It helps if you can be satisfied with an Inner Scorecard.” Brent Beshore: “My favorite part of the book was the section on habits, rules, and safeguards (page 101). A principle that Shane and I discussed in January changed my life and was expounded on in the book. Shane said, “It's impossible to work out very often if you have to decide every day whether or not you'll do it. That's why I just do something active every day, no matter what.” Solutions/Ego: “Solutions appear when you stop bargaining and start accepting the reality of the situation. That's because focusing on the next move, rather than how you got here in the first place, opens you up to a lot of possibilities. When you put outcome over ego, you get better results.” “Small plans don't inspire, but consistently small actions create incredible results.” Knowing Your Defaults: The emotion default - We tend to respond to feelings rather than reasons and facts The ego default - We tend to react to anything that threatens our sense of self-worth or our position in a group hierarchy The social default - We tend to conform to the norms of our larger social group. The Inertia default - We're habit-forming and comfort-seeking. We tend to resist change, and to prefer ideas, processes, and environments that are familiar. Ancient Greek word — Phronesis— the wisdom of knowing how to order your life to achieve the best results. Life/Career advice: "I'd give the same advice to someone who's trying to find someone to marry. Go on lots of dates. Experiment. Do stuff. Get out in the world. You can only connect the dots looking backward." If you want to develop good judgment, start by asking two questions: What do I want in life? And is what I want actually worth wanting?

There is a growing ecosystem of people talking about menopause and aging. The Black Girl's Guide to Surviving Menopause sees ourselves as menopausal alchemists, doulas, cartographers, and advocates and has taken up an intentional role in ushering in intergenerational Black voices and narratives into the menopausal landscape. We see our intergenerational work, healing, and storytelling as an ethos. An ethos is "an element of argument and persuasion through which a speaker establishes their credibility and knowledge, as well as their good moral character". Ethos elements include: Phronesis or the wisdom or intelligence you have Arete is the general moral virtue of your argument Eunoia is the goodwill you establish with the audience BGG2SM ethos around intergenerational healing and storytelling is grounded in the belief that there is knowledge, wisdom, and expertise from the menopausal multiverse at every age, and if we create spaces for this energetic exchange through our stories and full-throated truths, we are transformed as individuals and healing across generations is possible. During this episode of the BGG2SM, we explore our relationship with our bodies across three decades and multiple identities as Black people with uteruses with Amber J. This lecture discusses key ideas from the ancient philosopher Aristotle's work of moral theory, the Nicomachean Ethics. Specifically it focuses focuses on Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics book 6, and examines his discussion of the intellectual virtue of Phronesis - translated as "prudence" or "practical wisdom". Prudence is one of the most important of the virtues or dispositions, and provides a key linkage between the various moral virtues, such as justice, courage, or temperance, and the intellect. It provides the ability to deliberate well about means to ends, and to adapt general principles to specific situations. He is an associate professor or philosophy at Houston Baptist University, where he also serves as the director of the HBU Honors College, a liberal arts program for undergraduates to read, discuss, and write about great works of Western civilization. He resides with his family in the suburbs of Houston, Texas. His most recent publication is Aristotle: Education for Virtue and Leisure published by Classical Adademic Press. Show NotesWe invited Gary to discuss his new book. In keeping with one of our Classical Education podcast goals, "to inspire educators and parents to offer an education done well, influencing children to choose a life of virtue" Dr. Gary Hartenburg will inspire you! He explains that choices are not all equal in using time well and elaborates that to be ready and able to use time well, one must be “doing a lot of philosophy and music." He also explains the Aristotelian concept of “Phronesis” in contrast to “Sophia”, which is described as “practical vs theoretical.” To accomplish wisdom and theological contemplation, we must design an education that enables students to use their leisure time well. Reaching the highest end is philosophy and contemplation of the best things, with attention equally on all of the virtues of character. Each of four Aristotelian virtues: courage, moderation, justice, and wisdom must be equally considered in a classical education.  Students attain these virtue by "doing" and through the formation of good habits. Some topics in this episode include: How does leisure, as described by Aristotle, influence virtue? What is it to be happy and spend leisure time well? Will you explain phronesis and how it undergirds an Aristotelian Education? What would Aristotle say if he could speak through teachers to students? What do you think Aristotle would say about a common current approach to leisure and what would he say about the way we approach ethics in our schools?

Of course, that's where our strength of character shines and guides our action choices, which is why we mark it as an act of practical wisdom.""Practise is about repetition, not replication. I emphatically highlight in my work the distinction between repeating and replicating. I draw on Deleuze, who asserts that repetition is always about the difference. Hence, for me practising is about the leap of faith.""Reflexivity is this moment where we are in a situation fully present. So we show up, and we are experiencing it by allowing ourselves to feel and participate as an insider, at the same time, simultaneously, as we have the capacity to extrapolate and see it from an outsider's perspective.""Sensuousness is the secret intelligence that I don't think we've even begun to tap into, which is so important to phronesis. I call it CORE (Centeredness, Oneness, Reflex and Energy) Intelligence (CQ) because it is about tapping beyond our sensibility and sensitivity into our sentience".Resources Mentioned in This EpisodeEikeland, O. 2008.

Bill interviewed a leading Catholic voice in public affairs, especially in bioethics and the culture of life: Richard Doerflinger. His latest column for Catholic News Service examines the implications of the “Science Wins” maxim publicized by Pfizer Inc. in a recent TV commercial. You can see the commercial here. Doerflinger mentioned libertarian bioethicist John Harris in connection with the developments and moral controversies surrounding research on embryonic stem cells some years ago. Once concerns about human dignity were successfully eased by the development of pluripotent cells, science and society both did win from a prudential pullback from reliance on embryonic cells. Phronesis is practical moral judgment that integrates human wisdom and prudence to make the best decisions possible on public policy and practice given the facts human beings know from science—in light of virtue as a crucial factor. In the Catholic journal First Things. James Hankins has written recently about Machiavelli as the political guru of his day, who introduced scientism as a values-free guideline for geopolitical strategy. Machiavelli’s own predictions about outcomes in the absence of moral judgments led to strategic failures rather than successes, Doerflinger pointed out. The only law of history is the law of unintended consequences, according to Niall Ferguson, famed analyst of history, economics, and science. Doerflinger commented that unintended negative consequences have indeed been known to result from cases where science was unleashed without the exercise of human prudence. He puts out great Sets, through which I’ve been introduced to a number of newer artists, including Marquis Hill and Phronesis who are included in this Set. There’s such a wealth of great talent and great music out there, that friendly guides with similar tastes help us to the artists that will speak to us most deeply. So thanks to this community of sharing people, spreading the love. Most importantly, Thanks to the Musicians! This is pure amateurism on my part – sharing incredible art because I love it. And I hope that this sharing benefits those who pour their entire lives into it, especially those lesser known music makers, like Cleveland Eaton and Howard Johnson, and the side-players, orchestras and choruses. In this world of the 1% and the 99%, the arts world is imbalanced like any other. A precious few musicians live in luxury and renown, while the great multitudes of others – sometimes as great as the revered – share their gifts in obscurity, or lack the opportunity of even that. I’m thinking more these days about how the Arts benefit me, and about how I support Art, or whether I even do that, in its many forms. Thrive! Man könnte meinen, Computer wären kreativ. They're two words that get thrown around a lot but what exactly is the difference between knowledge and wisdom? Knowledge is something closer to what the Ancient Greeks called Episteme – a specialised knowledge in a particular field or an ability in a skill that's descriptive or explanatory in nature. Wisdom is something that’s harder to define but it’s closer to what the Greeks called Phronesis – it’s a more general understanding of how to live a good life and the decisions we should make. In this episode I discuss the differences between knowledge and wisdom, and the insights we can draw from them, including: - Knowledge comes and goes but wisdom lasts - Knowledge is additive and wisdom is subtractive - Knowledge Can Be Taught But Wisdom Must Be Learned So whether you're looking to make better decisions in your life or become more practically wise, this episode will give you actionable insights that will help you think smarter and make better decisions.

The paper sets out to consider the opinion which, at its bluntest, suggests that one should not work (in educational development) in a country which does not respect the principles of a liberal democracy, which has a poor reputation in terms of human rights and or has an autocratic government. The paper argues that such an opinion must rest on some sort of consequentialist balance sheet of the actual and anticipated consequences of committing to such work or declining to do so – and this takes it into some of the problems of applying such an equation. The paper also invites caution in the assessments that westerners make of countries portrayed as a ‘undemocratic’ and the importance of taking into account, for example, history, trajectory and context.
