Due to several big-time free agents still unsigned, some MLB players are talking players strike. Chip and Cern dig little into what started the 1994 MLB Strike. Chip and Cern review the Adam Wainwright clip where he is talking about a strike. Find out who is still unsigned, how much are they making and some Giants salary talk on this episode of the Chip and Cern Show. Bryce Harper and Manny Machado are the two biggest free agents that are yet to be signed and many think that owners are colluding against these big players and their contracts. Chip has some tips on how to get the strike does not look like some money grab. Chip and Cern learn up about what caused the 1994 strike and how it affected the game after that. Chip just starts reading off some stats from the 1994 strike-shortened season. Cern has a great point in saying the game of baseball isn’t ready for a strike. Attendance is down, and the game is tough to keep up with, so a strike isn’t a good one to take for the MLB. The Phillies made some trades before this year's deadline and the team acquired some minor league pitching talent for sure. The questions are, do these Phillies trades seem to improve the team, and how does this all coincide with the coming offseason and 2018 season? Liz Roscher (@lizroscher), Managing Editor at TheGoodPhight.com and writer at BigLeagueStew.com, joined us for a detailed discussion about these Phillies trades. But first, on the Brief News & Views segment:1. Eagles training camp, Kendricks wants a trade and a new defensive back was signed. (6:20)2. Thoughts on the new Sixers jerseys. (25:50)3. Eats and treats at the IronPigs. (28:45)4. Viewpoints on Pete Rose and the Phillies Wall of Fame. (33:50)5. TAKE IT or LEAVE IT: A listener provided us a new and interesting Phillies lineup. (40:10)And then what we're throwing down on the Table is an interview and in-depth discussion with Liz Roscher from The Good Phight and Big League Stew about the minor league talent the Phillies received in return for trading Jeremy Hellickson, Joaquin Benoit, Howie Kendrick, and Pat Neshek. We also talked about the looming storyline of the future of the first and second base personnel. What happens to Tommy Joseph and Ceaser Hernandez during this coming offseason with Rhys Hoskins and Scott Kingery waiting in the wings? The future of the bullpen was also another topic we dove into. All of this and much more during this week's interview.
Dr Mike Sonne rejoins the podcast to discuss his latest study. The talk (and piece) focuses on different stresses on pitchers that suggest a move to the bullpen for Aaron Sanchez may not make sense. Greg and Josh also discuss the trades for Melvin Upton Jr. and Joaquin Benoit, some quirks from the 12 inning game, J.A. Happ's return to his Pittsburgh ways, Aaron Sanchez' dominance, and the struggles of Josh Thole. Finally, the guys give Do Overs to some of their favourite targets, Pat Tabler and MLB.
MLB.com's Dave Raymond and Mariners reporter Greg Johns spotlight Steve Cishek's move to the Mariners and Joaquin Benoit's role in the relief core.
Twenty-Twos & Tridents – A Podcast About the Seattle Mariners
The Mariners now have their elite defensive center fielder. They also added Joaquin Benoit, and Andy Van Slyke decided to hop on the radio and say dumb stuff. We discuss.
We discuss the big Craig Kimbrel trade. For Kimbrel, this means more opportunities, because the team is better. On the downside, you have Joaquin Benoit, who loses the closer gig. Bummer for fantasy owners who have him. We then discuss the implications to the Braves lineup. Todd likes Eric Young Jr… EY may not have proven much in the past, but he’ll have the opportunity and he’s fast. Is Devon Travis worth talking about? We thought so. He’s got a bit of speed. If you want someone who might be a little better and also have speed, Micah Johnson, is a name you want to look out for. Speaking of middle infielders, the ghost of Christmas past, Dan Uggla, has a shot at playing time with Anthony Rendon on the shelf. In one category name guys, I sorta love Billy Burns. He made the squad and might run into a few steals. We end up with a chat about some up and coming young guns. Aaron Sanchez and Daniel Norris. I’m super skeptical because Daniel Norris lives in a van. But Todd has made a bold prediction on the guy. 180 IPs, 190 Ks? Warum nicht! He has stuff. We’re blowing up on the Twitter @2020Allstars. With the Red Sox and Tigers now tied at two wins per team in the ALCS, the season will come down to which team can win two games against the other club2019s three best starting pitchers. Getting two wins against Anibal Sanchez, Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander is a tough task indeed, but it is possible. The Red Sox, after all, did it in the first three games of the series. Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex previews Games 5, 6 and 7 (if necessary). He says if the Red Sox can get the Tigers starting pitchers to exit the games in the sixth or seventh innings, they have to like their chances against the bullpen provided the game is close (which should be the case in Game 5, considering how well Lester has pitched since the All Star Break). The Red Sox bullpen has a 0.73 ERA this postseason. They have the definitive advantage at the end of games. Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz need to play better, too. Ortiz2019s only hit in the series has been the grand slam he hit off Joaquin Benoit in Game 2. Pedroia misplayed two ground balls in Game 4, and has more strikeouts than hits this postseason. Xander Bogaerts should find his way into the lineup for Game 5 as well, because Stephen Drew and Will Middlebrooks have been offensive black holes this postseason. They have combined to hit .132 in the playoffs. It2019s time for a change. Alex recaps the pitching performances of John Lackey and Jake Peavy in Games 3 and 4, and says Lackey2019s redemption process is now complete. This is why the Red Sox acquired him prior to 2010. The guy represents everything baseball fans should want in a pitcher. He outdueled Verlander on Tuesday, and fans suddenly don2019t feel all that apprehensive about a Lackey/Verlander duel in a potential Game 7. Peavy was horrendous on Wednesday, and though his poor outing was not a referendum on the Jose Iglesias trade, it was still disheartening to watch. Peavy didn2019t have command of his breaking pitches all night, and paid the price. Jim Leyland orchestrated a massive lineup change in Game 4, batting Torii Hunter in the leadoff spot and having Miguel Cabrera bat second. It appeased all of the sabermetrics out there, and appeased Tigers fans as well. After scoring just six runs in the first three games of the series, the Tigers plated seven runs on Wednesday. Hunter and Cabrera combined to knock in four runs. In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex gives his thoughts on the latest developments in the NLCS, and defends Yasiel Puig2019s showboating. Oct. 13, 2013 will forever be known as the day in which Boston sports flashed back to 2004. Tom Brady led a 70-yard drive to propel the Patriots to victory in the afternoon, and David Ortiz hit a grand slam that defied all of the odds to lead the Red Sox to victory on Sunday night. This is the Golden Age of Boston Sports. Fans should appreciate what they get to see on a weekly basis, because it isn2019t going to last forever. The Red Sox had been no-hit through five innings for the second consecutive game on Sunday. Anibal Sanchez struck out 12 batters in Game 1, and Max Scherzer fanned 13 men in Game 2. It looked bleak, especially with Justin Verlander scheduled to start in Game 3. But then the Red Sox exposed the soft underbelly of the Tigers middle relief core. They loaded the bases in the eighth inning, and set the table for Ortiz to smash a game-tying grand slam off closer Joaquin Benoit. Defensive miscues cost the Tigers in the bottom of the ninth, as Jose Iglesias airmailed a through the first base (HAHAHA), which allowed Jonny Gomes to advance to second base. Gomes scored on a Jarrod Saltalamacchia ground ball that advanced past the outstretched Iglesias on the left side of the infield (HAHAHA). Red Sox relievers combined to throw three and one-third scoreless innings in relief of Clay Buchholz on Sunday, and didn2019t let the game get out of hand. Craig Breslow and Junichi Tazawa haven2019t allowed a run this postseason, as the bridge to Koji Uehara no longer appears to be a concern. Tigers starting pitchers have only allowed one run over the past 23 innings. Verlander will be opposed by John Lackey in Game 3, who has a 3.83 career ERA at Comerica Park. It will be a tall task for the Red Sox in Game 3, but it is no longer a must-win contest thanks to their heroics in Game 2. The Red Sox have a favorable pitching match-up in Game 4, as Jake Peavy will take on Doug Fister. Though Sanchez and Scherzer were dominant in Games 1 and 2, neither pitcher reached the eighth inning. This relentless Red Sox lineup grinds pitchers down, and will almost always reach a team2019s bullpen. Even if Verlander is terrific in Game 3, it is unlikely he2019ll pitch into the eighth or ninth inning. If the game is close, the Red Sox will have a chance. In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex talks about the NLCS, and explains why the Cardinals continue to show why they2019re one of the best organizations in baseball. Alex also tells you why Carlos Beltran is a better postseason hitter than Babe Ruth was. Emil Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
