We've got some umpire controversy at Fenway as homeplate umpire Mark Estabrook tossed both Walker Buehler and manager Alex Cora last night. Casey has a strong opinion about how the entire situation went down. Tarik Skubal once again dominated. Sean digs into why his changeup makes hitters look embarrassed and calls upon something Jim Leyland once told him about how to handle aces who can make you look silly. Plus, are we talking enough about how great of a hitter Freddie Freeman is? Casey gives love to one of the best left-handed hitters we've ever seen. Pirates legend Jim Leyland joined the show. Jim said it is always a sad day when a manager gets let go and feels for Derek Shelton being the man out of a job. That being said, he's thrilled for Don Kelly, one of his pupils, getting a big opportunity. Jim's advice to Kelly was to be himself and let the players do their jobs too. Jim hopes that Don can ease some tension in the clubhouse and said you always have to earn it at this level. Jim said you have to do everything you can for the players and if they don't perform, it's time to take them to task. Jim wants to see the Pirates get a little bit creative offensively to cause a spark. The guys asked Jim about consistency in the lineup and how it can impact the usual players. Jim talked about Don's playing experience and how playing every single position will help him with the team. Jim said you can plan for a lot of things in a game, but you can't script it. Jim doesn't believe in the analytics department much and said a lot of his success came more from instinct, watching the game, and working with is assistant coaches. Jim expressed the importance of not overloading the players with too much information and just letting them play the game. Other advice from Jim to Don was to hire an experienced bench coach.

Send us a textWhat drives someone to walk away from a stable career to chase their dream? Joanne Harrop did exactly that, leaving behind a decade in office equipment sales to pursue her passion for sports writing. With remarkable determination, she offered to write for free for local publications until finally breaking through as the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's first full-time female sports reporter in 1997.Sitting at Burned by Rocky Patel (which she was the first to feature when it opened), Harrop captivates us with stories from her 28-year journalism career. Instantly recognizable by the stylish hats she wears daily—a tradition started 15 years ago while covering fashion—she's evolved from sports reporting to becoming a celebrated features writer covering everything from food to real estate. Along the way, she's interviewed legends like Michael Jordan and Billie Jean King, while never forgetting Jim Leyland's advice to "act like you've been there before."The conversation takes a profound turn when Harrop shares the experience that led to her book, "A Daughter's Promise." When COVID-19 forced nursing homes to lock down in March 2020, Harrop faced an impossible choice regarding her 93-year-old mother: leave or stay indefinitely. Without hesitation, she moved in, honoring a promise made to her father years earlier. What began as a supposed two-week closure stretched into 84 days, during which her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and eventually passed away. Her journal entries from this period became a National Edward R. Murrow Award-winning article and ultimately her book.Through laughter, tears, and Pittsburgh sports memories, Harrop reminds us of journalism's evolving nature and the profound connection between mother and daughter. Her simple explanation for staying when others couldn't—"She would have done the same for me"—encapsulates a love story that transcends circumstances. Pick up "A Daughter's Promise" to experience the full journey of a woman who found her voice by following her heart.THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!!!!www.holdmycutter.com

The Braves were dealt a big blow Sunday as Ozzie Albies suffered a fractured wrist and will miss eight weeks. Also, the Hall of Fame welcomed the Class of ‘24 and Jorge Soler and Shohei Ohtani needed just two swings to smash 951 feet worth of homers.  On today's episode … ACT 1: THE BIG STORIES (0:41-6:22) In the ninth inning of the Braves' loss to the Cardinals Ozzie Albies awkwardly snagged his glove on a baserunner's shoulder. It immediately didn't look good and the news wasn't good as X-rays revealed a broken left wrist. In Cooperstown, Todd Helton, Adrian Beltré, Joe Mauer and Jim Leyland were inducted into the Hall of Fame, and not to be outdone, Jorge Soler crushed a 478-foot homer for the Giants at Coors – MLB's longest of the season – and Shohei Ohtani followed suit with a 473-footer of his own on Sunday Night Baseball. ACT 2: WHIPAROUND (6:22-8:30) Elsewhere around the Majors, the Yankees and Rays traded home runs – and slow home run trots – in a Tampa Bay win, Royals righty Seth Lugo strengthened his AL Cy case with a three-hitter against the White Sox, the Mariners overcame a Yordan Alvarez cycle to salvage the series finale against the Astros, and the Phillies put an end to the Pirates' six-game win streak. ACT 3: LOOKING AHEAD (8:30-9:17) No fewer than four Cy Young candidates take the mound tonight as Tarik Skubal and the Tigers hit the road to battle the Guardians, the Braves and Reynaldo López host the Reds, Ranger Suárez toes the rubber for the Phillies in Minnesota, and the visiting Red Sox and Tanner Houck match up against the Rockies.   To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices.
