In this segment of Kim on a Whim, Kim highlights the inspiring story of Paul Skeens, a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who is using his MLB platform for good. Partnering with the Gary Sinise Foundation, Skeens is donating $100 for every strikeout this season to raise funds for veterans and first responders, aiming for a $100,000 goal. Kim contrasts Skeens' philanthropy with athletes who misuse their platforms for negative causes, like Rachel Zegler's Snow White backlash and the ongoing controversy with athletes kneeling during the national anthem. She also touches on the importance of athletes like Adam Wainwright, who have given back to their communities, before diving into discussions about the political landscape and upcoming voter guide breakdown.

The 13th year of the Best Podcast in Baseball begins with a conversation about something new for the Cardinals and their fan base, something that hasn't been discussed around Busch Stadium in decades, and something some might argue was overdue. "For the first time in forever, (they're) trying to sell hope," says Post-Dispatch sports columnist Jeff Gordon. The first BPIB episode of 2025 welcomes Gordon, longtime author of Tipsheet at StlToday.com, as a regular contributor to the weekly baseball podcast and puts him right to work on cross-examination. Continuing what's become an annual feature on the podcast, host and baseball writer Derrick Goold reveals his ballot for the upcoming class of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Ichiro Suzuki is eligible for the first time and brings more than 3,000 hits in the majors and 4,200 hits as a professional to his bid to become the first unanimously selected position player. Ichiro, five holdovers from last year's ballot, and four newcomers, all pitchers, appear on Goold's 10-full ballot. Gordon and Goold discuss the layup decisions and the other choices that forced a look at how the modern game uses starting pitchers and, thus, how voters should consider that when looking at this generation of starters for the Hall of Fame. After the Cooperstown conversation, the two Post-Dispatch staff writers discuss new year's resolution for the 2025 Cardinals, and that brings the discussion around to the team's messaging. How do they sell a fan base and tickets to that fan base without the stars that fan base is used to seeing, without the contending club the fan base is accustomed to the team promising? Gordon has some thoughts on who should deliver that message and soon. That brings the podcast around to its conclusion -- and a potential historic end for a Cardinals' continuity. For more than 100 years, the Cardinals have had an eventual Hall of Famer in uniform. From Roger Bresnahan to Stan Musial, Dizzy Dean to Bob Gibson, Lou Brock to Ozzie Gibson, and certainly through 2011 when Albert Pujols went west until returning in 2022. Carlos Beltran is currently on the ballot and is a candidate to extend that streak through 2012 and 2013, and Yadier Molina has a claim to take it all the way through 2022, when then Adam Wainwright, Paul Goldschmidt, and Nolan Arenado are potential Cooperstown inductees to keep it going. Wainwright is now retired. Goldschmidt is now a Yankee. And the Cardinals actively exploring trade talks for Arenado. If all three are gone, is that streak? The Best Podcast in Baseball, sponsored by Closets by Design of St. Louis, is a production of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, StlToday.com, and Derrick Goold. Find it weekly wherever you get your podcasts.
In a shortened Sports Open Line due to Thursday Night Football, hear some audio from Adam Wainwright's appearance on the Foul Territory podcast, and from Blues Head Coach Drew Bannister on the Binnington/Hofer split at goalie.

Excited to share this episode with you. Last year, I got to see an early screening of THE FORGE with The Kendrick Brothers and some of the actors. You may have seen some of The Kendrick Brothers movies: FACING THE GIANTS, WAR ROOM, FIREPROOF, OVERCOMER, COURAGEOUS and others. Their new movie comes on 8/23/2024! Please get your tickets today. Great to see with your family or a group of friends. On this episode, we talk about fears, spiritual warfare, how they got into movies, discipleship, Adam Wainwright, and of course the new movie. A short bit about the movie: The Forge tells the story of Isaiah Wright, a 19 year old who lives for basketball and video games. A year out of high school, he still has no job, no plans and no idea of how to be a man. At odds with his single mom, he was given an ultimatum - to step up or move out. And Isaiah is forced to deal with his past, sacrifice his selfishness and discover how God might have a great purpose for his life. The cast of THE FORGE includes familiar farces such as Priscila Shirer (WAR ROOM, I CAN ONLY IMAGINE), Cameron Arnett (OVERCOMER, STAND YOUR GROUND), Karen Abercrombie (WAR ROOM, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3) and newcomer Aspen Kennedy. How you can help: #1 Go see the movie! Opening weekend is very important. By doing so, it helps boost the sales numbers which encourages the movie theaters to add more showing times and to keep it in the theater for a longer time. #2 Share the movie with family, friends, and share on social media. If you like the movie, lots of your friends and family will too! I think you'll enjoy the movie and I'll be uploading another episode with the Kendrick Brothers very soon. Hope you listen to that one and also let me know what you think of the podcast by writing a review on Apple Podcast! Thank you for listening and sharing the show with dads you care about! One of Martin‘s favorite "Great Talks" ever this morning on the Scoops Sports Network. A look at the Cardinals fanbase and if they've arrived at apathy. Martin says he sees more anger and sees that as a sign the fans still care. So should the team put the majority of money toward the farm system? What would fans say if the team stopped "competing" each year and instead tried to build from within? Martin talks about attendance at Busch and a dwindling TV audience. Thoughts on Walker, Gorman and former players like Carlson performing elsewhere now too. We talk about fan-favorite Adam Wainwright, clubhouse player interviews and more.
