It's officially Week 1! Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back behind the microphones for another edition of the Helium Boys Podcast to break down USC's Week 1 opponent: Missouri State, which will be making its debut at the FBS level. The show kicks off with the patented 'Two-Minute Drill' with Trevino commenting on Lincoln Riley's comments on Trojans Live about the starting lineup along the offensive line. Shotgun talks about his excitement for the start of the season, and his hurried travel plans this past weekend in Georgia. The Helium Boys then take their first official preview of the 2025 season with Missouri State. Missouri State wasn't a world beater at the FCS level with just four playoff appearances since 1989 and a 30-26 record since 2020. The Bears are projected to be among the bottom of Conference USA with a win projection between 5.4-6.7 per ESPN's Football Power Index. It's been an emotional offseason for the Bears program after the death of senior safety Todric McGee in spring from an accidental gunshot wound. McGee was projected to be a starter in the secondary, leaving a huge loss in the defense and program. In this episode of Take It or Leave It, host Josh Seidman kicks off a two-part series exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and management of leaves of absence and accommodations. He's joined by Bryon Bass, CEO of the Disability Management Employer Coalition (DMEC), for a timely and thought-provoking conversation about how AI is already reshaping – and will continue to reshape – the landscape of workplace leaves and accommodations. During this initial discussion, Josh and Bryon unpack the fundamentals – defining what AI really is (and isn't) in this context and key differences between two interrelated but distinct topics, AI and automation. They then explore how professionals in the field are currently leveraging AI, what challenges remain, and where the technology might take us next. Whether you're an HR professional, leave administrator, or simply curious about how AI is changing the workplace, this episode offers valuable insights and a preview of what's on the horizon. Send us a textThe 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is already underway—and it's expected to be an active one, with forecasts calling for 17 to 25 named storms, up to 13 hurricanes, and as many as 7 major hurricanes. For Florida's community associations, that means flood preparedness is no longer optional—it's urgent. In this episode of Take It to the Board, host Donna DiMaggio Berger welcomes Maurice Huffman, inventor of StormBag—a revolutionary, sandless sandbag that's changing the way neighborhoods and HOAs prepare for storms. Fresh off his appearance on Shark Tank Season 15, where he secured a $200,000 deal from Mark Cuban and Lori Greiner, Maurice shares the story behind StormBag, how it works, and why it's gaining traction across Florida and beyond.Unlike traditional sandbags, StormBags start out as lightweight, compact one-pound pouches that expand to 32-pound barriers when soaked in water—thanks to a polymer that absorbs 300 times its weight. They're clean, reusable, easy to store, and simple enough for a single person to deploy in minutes—making them ideal for both single-family homes and high-rise buildings.Maurice also opens up about the personal tragedy that led him to create StormBag after losing everything in the Paradise, California wildfires and experiencing flood damage shortly after. His Shark Tank journey provides a rare behind-the-scenes look at pitching to the Sharks and what happens after the cameras stop rolling. As climate risks grow and storms become more intense, this episode offers community leaders and homeowners practical insights on better protecting your property with less effort, expense, and environmental impact.Conversation Highlights:How the StormBag technology worksA breakdown of StormBag's cost and how it compares to traditional sandbags, including those distributed for free by some municipalitiesGuidance on how many StormBags are typically needed to protect the entrance of a multifamily buildingEstimates on the number of StormBags required to safeguard a 3,500-square-foot home from floodingInformation on the storage space required to stockpile StormBags in advance of a stormThe origin story behind StormBag and how the idea came to lifeInsights into Maurice's experience pitching on Shark Tank and securing a deal with Mark Cuban and Lori GreinerThe impact of endorsements from FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security, and examples of how HOAs and local governments are adopting StormBag for flood controlWhat community leaders and homeowners should keep in mind when it comes to flood preparedness and mitigationRelated Links:Resource: Becker Hurricane Preparedness and RecoveryOnline Class: Disaster Preparedness and RecoveryArticle: Shark Tank Episode

On this episode of Crazy Wisdom, I, Stewart Alsop, sit down with Gabe Dominocielo, co-founder of Umbra, a space tech company revolutionizing satellite imagery. We discuss the rapid advancements in space-based observation, the economics driving the industry, and how AI intersects with satellite data. Gabe shares insights on government contracting, defense applications, and the shift toward cost-minus procurement models. We also explore the broader implications of satellite technology—from hedge funds analyzing parking lots to wildfire response efforts. Check out more about Gabe and Umbra at umbraspace.com (https://umbraspace.com), and don't miss their open data archive for high-resolution satellite imagery.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversation!Timestamps00:00 Introduction to the Crazy Wisdom Podcast00:05 Gabe's Background and Umbra's Mission00:34 The Story Behind 'Come and Take It'01:32 Space Technology and Cost Plus Contracts03:28 The Impact of Elon Musk and SpaceX05:16 Umbra's Business Model and Profitability07:28 Challenges in the Satellite Business11:45 Investors and Funding Journey19:31 Space Business Landscape and Future Prospects23:09 Defense and Regulatory Challenges in Space31:06 Practical Applications of Satellite Data33:16 Unexpected Wealth and Autistic Curiosity33:49 Beet Farming and Data Insights35:09 Philosophy in Business Strategy38:56 Empathy and Investor Relations43:00 Raising Capital: Strategies and Challenges44:56 The Sovereignty Game vs. Venture Game51:12 Concluding Thoughts and Contact Information52:57 The Treasure Hunt and AI DependenciesKey InsightsThe Shift from Cost-Plus to Cost-Minus in Government Contracting – Historically, aerospace and defense contracts operated under a cost-plus model, where companies were reimbursed for expenses with a guaranteed profit. Gabe explains how the shift toward cost-minus (firm-fixed pricing) is driving efficiency and competition in the industry, much like how SpaceX drastically reduced launch costs by offering services instead of relying on bloated government contracts.Satellite Imagery Has Become a Crucial Tool for Businesses – Beyond traditional defense and intelligence applications, high-resolution satellite imagery is now a critical asset for hedge funds, investors, and commercial enterprises. Gabe describes how firms use satellite data to analyze parking lots, monitor supply chains, and even track cryptocurrency mining activity based on power line sagging and cooling fan usage on data centers.Space Technology is More Business-Driven Than Space-Driven – While many assume space startups are driven by a passion for exploration, Umbra's success is rooted in strong business fundamentals. Gabe emphasizes that their focus is on unit economics, supply-demand balance, and creating a profitable company rather than simply innovating for the sake of technology.China's Growing Presence in Space and Regulatory Challenges – Gabe raises concerns about China's aggressive approach to space, noting that they often ignore international agreements and regulations. Meanwhile, American companies face significant bureaucratic hurdles, sometimes spending millions just to navigate licensing and compliance. He argues that unleashing American innovation by reducing regulatory friction is essential to maintaining leadership in the space industry.Profitability is the Ultimate Measure of Success – Unlike many venture-backed space startups that focus on hype, Umbra has prioritized profitability, making it one of the few successful Earth observation companies. Gabe contrasts this with competitors who raised massive sums, spent excessively, and ultimately failed because they weren't built on sustainable business models.Satellite Technology is Revolutionizing Disaster Response – One of the most impactful uses of Umbra's satellite imagery has been in wildfire response. By capturing images through smoke and clouds, their data was instrumental in mapping wildfires in Los Angeles. They even made this data freely available, helping emergency responders and news organizations better understand the crisis.Philosophy and Business Strategy Go Hand in Hand – Gabe highlights how strategic thinking and philosophical principles guide decision-making in business. Whether it's understanding investor motivations, handling conflicts with empathy, or ensuring a company can sustain itself for decades rather than chasing short-term wins, having a strong philosophical foundation is key to long-term success.

The Helium Boys Podcast returns to discuss the Media Day for the new USC coaches, the greatness of Rob Ryan and recording in a Waffle House. Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back behind for another edition of the Helium Boys Podcast...but with a twist. The boys are both on the road in Georgia for work, setting up for a completely mobile podcast on the road. The episode opens not with the duo together, but Chris stranded in the airport waiting for Shotgun to arrive. Once they are reunited the Helium Boys run through the 'Two-Minute Drill' on the road, which included a gift from Shotgun. The Helium Boys then spend the majority of the drive to talk about the media day debut of USC's new hires: general manager Chad Bowden, linebackers coach Rob Ryan, cornerbacks coach Trovon Reed and inside receivers/tight ends coach Chad Savage. After a break, the podcast duo answers your mailbag questions discussing Big Ten baseball, Rob Ryan against Ed Orgeron and if it's too late for USC football in 2025. Shotgun Spratling is then put through a Georgia-themed Take It or Leave It to wrap things up in the most perfect location: Waffle House. This time we welcome Chris Sloan and Martha Harbison to talk about mentorship in the internet age, whether birders underappreciate Canada, and what would it take to get back to the old rarity phone trees. Also, the ABA is not the only organization with a Bird of the Year in 2025. Let's celebrate some more! Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino are back behind the microphones for another episode of the Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football podcast. The Helium Boys return to break down the Trojans' thrilling come-from-behind, last-second 35-31 victory over Texas A&M in the Las Vegas Bowl and discuss the perpetual redesign of the Trojans' roster for the 2025 season. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill' that features Shotgun discussing the epic finish to Kyle Ford's collegiate career before Chris uses his 'Two-Minute Drill' to focus primarily on his love affair with the Pop Tarts Bowl. That leads to a discussion about the Helium Boys traveling to cover or at least attend the 2025 Pop Tarts Bowl with Chris making the declaration that he will get a Pop Tarts Bowl tattoo in exchange for VIP access/treatment from the Pop Tarts Bowl. Chris and Shotgun then dive into their Stock Up/Stock Down segment looking at the players and themes that saw their stock rise or dip after the bowl game, starting with what positive developments happen before the team traveled to Las Vegas as Kamari Ramsey and Emmanuel Pregnon announced their returns to the team. Ja'Kobi Lane's wild string of six consecutive receptions going for touchdowns is included as are fellow receivers Makai Lemon and Ford. USC's young offensive line gets its kudos as well. On the flip side, Shotgun and Chris discuss another up-and-down performance by quarterback Jayden Maiava as well as the confidence of and surrounding Maiava. Then Shotgun goes on a rant about Lincoln Riley's Renaissance Man attempts that have led him to be mediocre in areas he previously thrived. Some younger players that didn't get opportunities in the bowl game and the chance in receiver rotations are also featured. A discussion about the NCAA transfer portal and the impact of both the losses and acquisitions the Trojans have made since the portal opened leads to some puzzled worries from the podcast collaborators. After a break, the podcast duo answer your mailbag questions discussing the transfer portal as well as USC's searches for a linebacker coach and general manager. There are also questions about offseason momentum, offensive creativity and involvement of the tight end position. The Helium Boys also react to suggestions for the podcast for 2025 before the episode concludes with Chris quizzing Shotgun with some Take It or Leave Its about the Trojans and an Overtime period focused on New Year's Eve traditions.
