PASSED BALL SHOW #97 9/10/2013 Part 1 WITH EARL AVERILL; I open up by making a case that the Jayson Werth and Gio Gonzalez signings were good moves by Nationals GM Mike Rizzo. I am then joined by former Indians, Cubs and Angels catcher Earl Averill, son of HOF OF Earl Averill. We talk about his playing career, his father and his father's animosity with the Veterans Committee regarding his delayed induction in 1975. I finish off by dissecting the trade between the Orioles and Mariners involving Eric Bedard, Adam Jones and Chris Tillman
This week and while Brian is out, Ryan Ripken joins the show. Justin and Ryan talk about Carlos Correa going back to the Twins on a 6-year, $200 million deal and the ramifications that move will have. Then, we break down Adam Frazier's deal with the Orioles. Next, with the Nashville MLB expansion picking up steam, we discuss how baseball would fare in that city as well as other proposed locations. Then we talk about the MLB Hall of Fame balloting process and if there is as much buzz around the elections this year. Our top 5 for this week is the top 5 best free agent contracts ever. And finally, our Fudge-Ing Awesome Moment of the Week, presented by the Original Fudge Kitchen, goes to Chris Tillman attempting a comeback. Due to several big-time free agents still unsigned, some MLB players are talking players strike. Chip and Cern dig little into what started the 1994 MLB Strike. Chip and Cern review the Adam Wainwright clip where he is talking about a strike. Find out who is still unsigned, how much are they making and some Giants salary talk on this episode of the Chip and Cern Show. Bryce Harper and Manny Machado are the two biggest free agents that are yet to be signed and many think that owners are colluding against these big players and their contracts. Chip has some tips on how to get the strike does not look like some money grab. Chip and Cern learn up about what caused the 1994 strike and how it affected the game after that. Chip just starts reading off some stats from the 1994 strike-shortened season. Cern has a great point in saying the game of baseball isn’t ready for a strike. Attendance is down, and the game is tough to keep up with, so a strike isn’t a good one to take for the MLB. These guys can actually play some decent baseball! The Orioles went 5-1 this week. The offense went off and the pitching impressed. Ben Lindbergh and Jeff Sullivan banter about a new newsletter about baseball debuts, Shohei Ohtani’s latest exploits, the pitiful state of the AL Central, the even more pitiful performance of Orioles starter Chris Tillman, pitchers’ perplexing lack of respect for the Braves’ Ronald Acuña, Ichiro’s debut as a bench coach and future in baseball, and […]
The Orioles had another tough week, but there were some bright spots. The guys discuss players that are heating up (Chris Tillman, Pedro Alvarez, Anthony Santander and Manny Machado) as well as some dudes who are struggling (Alex Cobb, Andrew Cashner, Dylan Bundy and Brad Brach). DFSR’s Doug Norrie and James Davis take to Friday’s podcast discussing a full complement of MLB action for DraftKings and FanDuel. There’s so much to break down with aces like Corey Kluber, Jacob deGrom and Stephen Strasburg taking the mound. The guys discuss the merits of each in cash and try to make sense of some of their early season numbers. They also look at Marcus Stroman and Aaron Nola as possibly DraftKings SP2 options coming a little cheaper. Then they break down some offenses in good spots. Chris Tillman takes the mound again which always presents upside for his opponent. Tillman has been, by far, the worst pitcher in baseball this season. But other bad arms like Erasmo Ramirez, Reynaldo Lopez, and Derek Holland are also taking the bump. The guys look at all of this and more on a full Friday podcast for FanDuel and DraftKings. What a week! The O's lost five of their six games, but Manny Machado won AL Player of the Week, Dylan Bundy finally won a game and Chris Tillman wasn't a complete disaster. Tyler, Marcus and Jesse discuss these topics in a depressing podcast that reflects the feelings of the Birdland faithful at the moment. Also, Tyler has a headache and Jesse's phone rings...twice. DFSR's Doug Norrie and James Davis take to the MLB podcast discussing a full slate of baseball action for FanDuel and DraftKings. They start with pitching where the options are thin on the evening. Gerrit Cole stands head and shoulders above the rest of the group in a solid matchup against the Rangers. He comes in as a heavy favorite and has been excellent to start the season in Houston. They also look at guys like Zack Greinke, Vincent Velasquez and even Jacob Faria. On offense, the guys discuss stacking the Red Sox against Chris Tillman who's been downright terrible for two seasons now. They also discuss the Pirates, Nationals and Angels as possible stacks. DFSR’s Doug Norrie and James Davis take to the Friday podcast to discuss a full slate of baseball for FanDuel and DraftKings. There are some good arms taking the bump starting with Alex Wood who’s coming off his worst game of the season last time out. But he’s been great overall and is a huge favorite here against the Giants. They also discuss Masahiro Tanaka who’s been running bad on the home runs this season and Danny Salazar who pitched his game last time out fresh off the DL. They also discuss Robbie Ray, Jose Quintana, Dallas Keuchel and Julio Teheran. With the bats they are looking to target the Red Sox against Jason Vargas, Rangers vs. Chris Tillman and Orioles up against Derek Holland. All of that and more on a full Friday podcast. DFSR’s Doug Norrie and James Davis take to the podcast to discuss a full night in baseball. They start with the discussion around the top three pitchers on the slate: Jacob deGrom, Alex Wood, Lance Mccullers. There are cases for and against each and it mostly centers on price. deGrom is very expensive but has been excellent this season. Wood’s been an ace but there are always some pitch count concerns with the Dodgers. And finally, McCullers is coming the cheapest of the three but is just two starts back from injury. They also take a look at Robbie Ray, Sonny Gray and Jacob Faria. On the offensive side they throw out the Rays as a great stack against Chris Tillman, both sides of the Brewers/ Marlins game and the Rangers against Mike Pelfrey. Learn more about your ad choices. The questions on-tap for the show include: If Kershaw is SP1 and Scherzer is SP2, who is SP3?Do you draft oft-injured pitchers such as Stephen Strasburg and Matt Harvey?Do you believe in bounce-back seasons for Dallas Kuechel or Felix Hernandez? How do you handle pitchers who you know will have their innings limited, such as Julio Urias?Who is a prospect that you would draft and stash?Do you draft Jeurys Familia with the pending suspensionDo you draft the top set up men: Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances?Do you draft closers who are in comittees or would you rather just punt saves? As always, the guys finish by giving you their sleeper and busts picks for this position. Fortunes have shifted. What looked like a wash for the division just a week ago, the #Orioles have climbed back into the hunt for the division lead. Ubaldo Jimenez has been solid in Chris Tillman's absence, and now Tillman is back. Buckle up Baltimore!
After two more Dodgers were placed on the DL, the guys discuss if they can hold on to their slim NL West lead. Plus with Chris Tillman also hitting the DL, will the Orioles be able to go deep into the playoffs without their ailing ace? The guys give their takes on the Royals' nine-game win streak and talk about how tough of an out the champs would be in the postseason. Also, now that A-Rod has signed a deal to be a public speaker, the guys give their take on what his professional reel would look like. Plus, Adam Wainwright joins the show for the best interview in baseball.
It has been on the up and down for the #Orioles as they were losers of five in a row followed by another winning streak. Chris Tillman has started and ended both streaks. He is the stopper indeed.
We are pleased to present you with Episode 9 of BMore Wired, our Baltimore sports podcast. This week, we talk the Baltimore Orioles recent success from the starters and the Baltimore Ravens getting set to begin training camp. Episode 9 of BMore Wired is one that I will certainly remember. It is the first time I have done the show without my co-host Scott Rosario, but he has a good excuse as he has spent three days at Oriole Park at Camden Yards braving out the nasty heat wave. The show opens with our segment “Beefed It!” and I call out Minnesota United goalkeeper Sammy Ndjock for throwing the ball into his own goal. As a former goalkeeper myself, this is the worst own goal I have seen. If you have not seen the video, judge for yourself. https://youtu.be/lRlt5C-Fvqs Denard Robinson driving his car into a pond and the police not charging him with anything was a close second, but scoring on yourself will always trump stupidity. The Baltimore birds of summer, the Orioles, have had great success from their starting pitching. It has not just been just Chris Tillman either. Dylan Bundy, Yovanni Gallardo and Vance Worley all pitched terrific games during the O’s recent winning streak. I make a case as to why the O’s should keep Worley in the rotation with his recent success. There are reports that the team could be interested in San Diego Padres starter Andrew Cashner, and in my eyes, they are the same player. Difference is that one has shown me he can handle the competition in the American League East. The other has been getting lit up by National League teams. Then, there was the short-lived hype that Melvin Upton Jr. could be on the move for Ubaldo Jimenez. Obviously, getting rid of Ubaldo in any way possible is a win for this organization. However, Bossman is now with the Toronto Blue Jays. Good. That allows us to continue to boo him as we did as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays. While they did not get the man they want, they are still getting the results. The O’s are coming off consecutive wins in walk off fashion, and we were there live on Sunday to see Nolan Reimold’s walkoff home run in the 10th inning. The following night, the game was won on a walk off error. A win is a win and when battling for first place in the division, they will take any win they can. This week in “7s” our seven stories around the world of sports has a theme of players or organizations getting themselves into the news in a not so flattering way. Here is a rundown of my 7s: Chris Sale cutting up the White Sox throwback jerseys. He was suspended for five games – only one start because he is a pitcher – but could this be the final action that gets him shipped out of Chicago? Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza join the MLB Hall of Fame, and I admit, I missed out on the Griffey hype as a child. However, I make a case for the players of the Steroid Era to be included into Cooperstown, including the guy who plays in New York named Alex Rodriguez. The NBA decided to pull the All-Star game from Charlotte over a controversial bill passed by the North Carolina government. The city is saying that no longer holding the event could cost them up to $100 million, but I am not buying it. The Russians really are not making good headlines around the globe as of late. They have been found to tamper with the drug testing that took place at the past Olympics and nearly were disqualified from the Olympics in Rio. Instead, the individual sports will decide who can gain entry. Listen in to what I have to say about the Russians. It will make you chuckle. The NFL and its players can never seem to stay out of trouble. First, it was Ezekiel Elliott allegedly accused of domestic violence. Aldon Smith live streamed a video of him smoking a blunt. Le’Veon Bell is facing a four-game suspensions for missing a drug test. These are three of the dumbest things athletes of their caliber can do. On that note, we switch into the discussion of the Ravens. Going along with some of the discussion above, Eugene Monroe and Ray Rice, two players who are both out of the league, are in the news once again. Monroe has opted to retire and smoke dope over playing football, while Rice has pledged to give his salary to charity if signed by an NFL team. Just give it a rest guys. The Ravens have found a replacement for Monroe and that is former No. 1 overall pick Jake Long. He signed a one-year deal with the team on Tuesday and could be the starter at left tackle. If not, he serves as a mentor to rookie Ronnie Stanley. Baltimore enters training camp with six players on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Those players are Terrell Suggs, Elvis Dumervil, Steve Smith, Breshad Perriman, Trent Richardson and Jumal Rolle. All should be ready at some point during camp, except Rolle who is out for the season. The team will have its first full practice on Thursday. Former Raven Arthur Jones has been suspended four games for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancing drugs. For those of you who do not know, he is the brother of Jon “Bones” Jones, who was also recently found to be using PEDs. The duo earns my “Crying Jordan of the Week” as I close out the show. You can listen to all the episodes of BMore Wired on iTunes and Twitter. Until next week, we leave with you with one of my favorite moments as a Baltimorean, the Delmon Young double.
