From 'Baseball Isn't Boring' (subscribe here): Veteran outfielder Trayce Thompson, who is now with his ninth organization, is setting spring training on fire with his performance in Red Sox camp, leading all MLB players with six spring training homers. But what we learned is many of the lessons that are currently paying off were the product of his time with former big leaguer Jonny Gomes while both were with the Diamondbacks. It's why the sit-down with Gomes and Thompson for this podcast is so powerful. There are plenty of laughs. There are plenty of reminders. There are plenty of eyebrow-raising stories. It's simply a great conversation. To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Hey, it's Jesse. I usually don't first-person these, since it's Roger and Andrew's podcast and I just like to do some notes in the space here… but also, today's note is especially for the 8-year-old in my house, whose reaction to the Mets winning last night on DJ Stewart getting hit by a pitch was, “has that ever happened before?”“A walkoff hit by pitch?” I replied. “Yeah, it happens sometimes.”“That exact situation?”“It's got to be the bases loaded, so, yes?”“The Mets against the Rangers?”“Well, I doubt that. They haven't played each other too much.”Indeed, the Mets' previous three wins on a walkoff HBP came against the Marlins in the 2021 home opener (Michael Conforto by Anthony Bass), the A's in 2011 (Justin Turner by Brad Ziegler), and the Cardinals on April 23, 1992 (Daryl Boston by Juan Agosto).Wait just a minute. Daryl Boston hit by Juan Agosto? That was part of Monday's note, because the runner who scored was Rodney McCray, a pinch-runner.Conforto is the only batter of the four who was hit in the ninth inning, so McNeil is the first Manfred Man to score a game-winning run on an HBP in Mets history (the others were both in 13th innings, pre-baseball shootout rule). McNeil hit the home run that tied the game against the Marlins two years ago, and pinch-hitter Luis Guillorme singled and eventually scored when Conforto leaned over the plate for the win. Lucas Duda singled and came around on the Turner plunking, so the Mets have had all manner of baserunners bring home wins this way.All four of these Mets rallies do share in common an intentional walk, and the one that Joe Torre and the Cardinals gave to Charlie O'Brien did show that little bit of strategy that came into play before the automatic free pass: Juan Agosto throwing pitchouts to Tom Pagnozzi, rather than Pagnozzi doing the old stand-and-shuffle move. Tim McCarver went so far as to describe it as an “unintentional intentional walk,” but the official scorer gave it a full IBB. After all, there wasn't an attempt to throw a strike on ball four, it was purposely outside. The Mets are now 4-4 in games with a walkoff HBP, and haven't lost a game this way since 2014, when Jeurys Familia drilled Hank Conger with the bases loaded in the 11th inning in Anaheim — one of three walkoff HBPs in the majors that year, a record set in 1972, and tied in 1997, 2002, 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2021. It's the first time it happened this year, and it's now happened at least once each of the last five seasons since a failure to get this shrimp varietal in 2018.Jonny Gomes is the only batter to be hit by two pitches to end games: August 21, 2011 in Washington, by Phillies closer Brad Lidge; and April 11, 2012, in Oakland, by Jonathan Broxton of Kansas City. Only one pitcher has walked off twice after hitting a batter: Randy Moffitt with the Giants in 1972 (Joe Pepitone at Wrigley Field) and 1978 (Bill Russell at Dodger Stadium). The Red Sox took two out of three from the first place St. Louis Cardinals and the vibes are positive heading into the pod. With the Celtics' season ending this week, everyone knew that all the attention is now focused on the Red Sox and they did not disappoint. Smooches dominated yet again, Bogaerts had another outstanding series, and Trevor Story won his second Klark's Ketchup MVP of the year. Jared had an eventful weekend with Johnny Damon sleeping over his apartment, NESN wanting him to jump out of a plane with Jonny Gomes, and having to scramble for tickets on Father's Day and waiting in line like a normal person to get into Fenway. We also talk about how ridiculous it is to play Sweet Caroline at Fenway when the Red Sox are losing/getting blown out. Jake from Talkin' Baseball also makes an appearance on the pod in the first DraftKings/Jomboy Media crossover since the new pods dropped. Enjoy! We're LIVE in-studio with Jared and Jonny Gomes, with Dallas and Joey on zoom. Joey has discovered some never before listened to audio of Daryl Strawberry saying he wants to punch Dallas Braden in the face. We listen to the audio and get Dallas' live reaction. Then we move onto the continued infestation of possums in the Oakland Coliseum and talk about why Dallas keeps capturing and killing these possums. The Astros made history by hitting five home runs against the Red Sox which is only the eighth time that's happened in MLB history, though Jared doesn't think it's that impressive. We break down a hypothetical Mets/Dodgers NLCS and predict who would win and why. Taylor Ward is still the hottest hitter on the planet and shows no signs of slowing down, and Dallas questions if Mike Trout is now the third best player on his own team. Jonny shares some WILD international baseball stories, fight stories, Savannah Banana stories and rules, and talks about his upcoming trip to hit homers all over the world in Home Run Derby X. Enjoy! We are excited to announce that Jonny Gomes will be joining Baseball Is Dead as a regular contributor to the show! In Episode 6 Jonny, Jared, Dallas, and Joey break down the biggest MLB storylines from over the weekend. We talk about Yankees fans throwing trash at the Guardians outfielders after their walk-off win, Miguel Cabrera getting his 3,000th hit, Reds fans being asked to remove bags from their heads in the stands, offense and batting averages being at an all-time low, and a whole lot more. We also talk about what it would be like if hitters had access to statistics while in the batters' box in the same capacity that pitchers and fielders on defense do. Angel Hernandez had an awful Sunday Night Baseball game in which he was booed and yelled at by Kyle Schwarber which leads to discussion by Jonny on when you should/shouldn't argue balls and strikes. Jared also sees a video of Gerrit Cole touching the back of his pants between pitches which leads to discussion on whether pitchers are still getting away with using sticky substances. Enjoy!
