Ron, Elliott, and Pete dive into the lackluster offseason for the St. Louis Cardinals, with Ron expressing his disinterest in this year's Winter Warm-Up and the team's failure to make significant moves. The guys discuss the ambiguous "reset" strategy announced by the Cardinals' management, questioning what it really means for the future of the team. Elliott counters with a look at the Chicago Cubs' recent signings, highlighting their efforts to improve the roster while Pete pokes fun at the expectations of Cubs fans regarding team profitability. The conversation takes a comedic turn as the hosts explore the absurdity of fan expectations in the current sports landscape. As the episode progresses, the trio shifts gears to the Hall of Fame announcements, celebrating the induction of Ichiro and reflecting on the careers of other inductees like Billy Wagner and CC Sabathia. They discuss the implications of the steroid era on Hall of Fame voting and speculate on future inductees, including Carlos Beltrán and Ryan Braun. Wrapping up the episode, they touch on the Chicago Bears' recent coaching hires before celebrating the return of "Ron's Soccer Minute"! That's right, the excitement for the upcoming MLS season is palpable, as Ron shares his hopes for St. Louis City SC and their new coach. The guys also share a laugh over the latest Star Wars news, including the unexpected fate of Watto the Toydarian. Check out the livestream on YouTube, Rumble, Facebook, or X. As an athlete, part of the climb is reaching the top and often, fame and wealth steal the spotlight, but what's not really discussed, is how a simple game can shape one's identity and provide purpose. In a recent conversation on The Pivot, former MLB All-Star Matt Kemp joins Ryan, Channing, and Fred to unravel the multifaceted journey of life as a professional baseball player. Kemp shares a blend of funny anecdotes and honest reflections, providing a glimpse into the complexities of his career from a small town guy to the big lights of Los Angeles, and the extra pressures that came with playing in the limelight of a big city. From the challenges of adapting to life in various cities to the weight of fame under the spotlight of Los Angeles, Kemp's experiences paint a picture of the highs and lows that come with being a professional athlete. As Matt navigated the transition into retirement, He compares that time in his life to mourning a family death, juggling all the emotions of losing something you love while facing the uncertainties that lie ahead. In 2011 Matt Kemp finished second in National League MVP voting to Ryan Braun, and he talks about his reaction to later finding out Braun tested positive for PEDs that season. He won the Hank Aaron Award that year, though, and Kemp reflects on being biracial in baseball as well as the African-American mentors he had in the sport. Still tough to rationalize missing out on that feat, Matt talks about life now, and leaving the baseball to pursue mentorships and other business endeavors. Throughout the episode, Kemp provides valuable insights into broader themes such as race, identity, and the ever-evolving landscape of rookie vs veterans in the locker room. Playing for the LA Dodgers came with high expectations between living in Hollywood, access to celebrities combined with a fast pace lifestyle while putting up a league high MLB numbers, Matt shares how the pressures sometime were too much to handle and only increased as his personal life took center stage to media outlets and blogs. The guys chat about Matt's adjustment to fame- from the media's accountability to the dating scene, which Channing can't help but ask about his relationship with superstar Rihanna. From his mom and dad helping him choose baseball in Oklahoma to Torii Hunter and Don Newcombe guiding him once he reached the majors, Kemp gives praise to the many people who helped him reach the success he had. Yet today he is no longer an active baseball player, and he talks about the unknown struggles of retirement and entering a new chapter as a dad. We were gonna do an episode of Willets Pod last night, but illness got in the way, so here are some fun facts as the Men's College World Series gets underway today. Here's a fun fact about each college team's products who made it to MLB. This isn't necessarily what would've been discussed on the podcast that we didn't get to do, but came up in the internet rabbit hole while preparing for it.Oral Roberts: Two of the three All-Stars the school has produced are active players, Jordan Romano and Jose Trevino. The other is 1980s baseball card staple Mike Moore.TCU: Pete Donohue remains the winningest major league pitcher who attended TCU, with 134 victories from 1921-32. But Jake Arrieta got close with 115.Virginia: Sean Doolittle and Ryan Zimmerman are multiple-time All-Stars, but the one Cavalier who made it to Cooperstown never played an All-Star Game. That's because Eppa Rixey's career was from 1912-33.Florida: The all-time leading Gator in major league homers is and has been Al Rosen since the 1950s. Pete Alonso is currently trailing 192-168, with Mike Stanley still to catch at 187.Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons have given us not only the pitcher Ryan Braun and the outfielder Dave Robertson, but also these great names: Mike Buddie, Dave Bush, Chris Getz, Lee Gooch, Doyt Morris, Dick Newsome, Charlie Ripple, Elmer Sexauer, and Brick Smith.Stanford: Six former Cardinal players have hit 100 or more major league home runs — Carlos Quentin, Ed Sprague, Steve Buechele, Jed Lowrie, Jeffrey Hammonds, and Bob Boone. None has reached 200. Good luck to Tommy Edman, currently at 47.LSU: As of today, DJ LeMahieu has the same .417 career slugging percentage as his predecessor with the Tigers, Aaron Hill.Tennessee: The one active ex-Volunteer who's been an All-Star? You guessed it, Yan Gomes. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit willetspen.substack.com/subscribe

PASSED BALL SHOW #66 2/7/2013 Part 2 WITH GAVIN CECCHINI; I start the second half by calling out Ryan Braun for the fraud he his, making the comparison between him and Rafael Palmeiro. Mets 2012 1st round draft pick Gavin Cecchini calls in to talk about his brother Garin, who was drafted by the Red Sox, living up to being a number 1 draft pick and what he expects to happen in the future. Though I support a potential signing, I compare Michael Bourn to a couple of other leadoff hitters the Mets gave long term deals to. I finish by analyzing the 1960, 1971 and 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates World Series Championship teams
uAvionix is one of the most innovative new companies in General Aviation with their amazing NavBeacon, TailBeacon, AV-30 & AV-20-S displays. Join us for an evening with two of the founding members of the company: COO - Ryan Braun & Dir. of Marketing Ryan Reed for a fascinating disussion about the evolution of the company, coping with the COVID 19 crisis and what's next for General Aviation!“SocialFlight Live!” is a live broadcast dedicated to supporting General Aviation pilots and enthusiasts during these challenging times.
Today we welcome Christian Ramsey and Ryan Braun from uAvionix to discuss next-generation avionics. Ryan and Christian lead a successful company with real products for clear industry use-cases – in this case with size, weight, and power-optimized avionics – while straddling both the manned and unmanned markets. Listen to their conversation on the benefits of being in both markets. This is so important as we hear from so many who have yet to build their capabilities, are hoping for a variety of conditions that may or may not occur, with use-cases that have yet to be proven. The uAvionix approach speaks to the benefits of building capabilities that have a rapid return on investment in today's market for today's needs – while creating capabilities in unmanned markets that, yes, exist today, and have the potential to rapidly and expansively grow in size and scope. We talk about the technologies necessary for the integration of UAS into the airspace system: autopilots, command & control radios, high integrity GPS receivers, cloud-based beyond visual line of sight command & control networks, and ADS-B. You'll enjoying hearing about what drove the need for ADS-B – why it was so important to our industry and for the foundation of uAvionix, why it is and isn't a good option for small drones, and yet so important for manned aircraft. We discuss the AAM supply chain, the role of certified avionics in the unmanned aircraft industry, vertical integration as well as lessons learned in building and selling a profitable and fast-growing avionics company serving both the unmanned and manned markets. One of the many reasons uAvionix has been successful is that they took an established capability and introduced it to markets with clear use-cases. Listen to how they took their tech to smaller airports, where the airports are sometimes blind when understanding airspace around them…and where a lot happens on ramps and taxiways and where coordination is historically through verbal communication. ADS-B brings the same benefits to an airport that it brings to aircraft…helping to prevent, in this case ground incursions and providing a full range of intelligence, including where aircraft come and where they're going, as well as providing runway friction information. And rather than building their own business intelligence platforms and selling them throughout this vast market, they partnered with companies that already have their own platforms and broad market acceptance, as represented with the recent market announcement of their recent partnership with PASSUR Aerospace. Finally, listen to the importance of growing a viable, profitable company from the offset – listen to their advice on the importance of running profitable operations from the beginning – which builds a stronger and more attractive opportunity should the time be right to raise funds for more expansive opportunities. You'll enjoy listening their to experiences in the early days of their business – echoing what many of our business leaders have said as they started their businesses – and the fundamentals they would pass along to our audience of budding and established business leaders.

It was Ben Ogilvie and Gorman Thomas combining for 73 home runs in 1982 - more than the entire Cardinal team that beat them in the World Series!
