The Nats lost 7-3 at the Mets to begin a 10 game/ 3 city road trip. Mark (Live from Flushing) and Al begin with Josiah Gray's start, which saw his pitching line marred in the 6th inning. Gray's ERA is nearing 5.00 and the hosts wonder how we should evaluate his mixed bag of a season. (14:03) Steve Cishek was part of the problem in the four run 6th inning as his season long struggles have continued as of late. Should his usage come down significantly in this final month, especially with Mason Thompson back in Washington? (19:40) Ildemaro Vargas had another good game as he went 2 for 4 with two doubles and a RBI. "Vargy" also made a nifty defensive play on a sharp grounder. Should we expect this plate production to continue? (27:05) The Victor Robles Bingo Card was in full effect on Friday night as he tripled, scored on an unusual play, misplayed a ball in the field, and played a crucial role in an unorthodox double play. The Nats lost 10-6 to Oakland, but that was not the major news of the day. Mark & Al begin with stunned reaction to the news that Cade Cavalli's season is likely over as he is headed to the IL after just one MLB start. Cavalli's shoulder has inflammation and he initially felt discomfort the day after his debut. Does this effect the usage of Josiah Gray and MacKenzie Gore down the stretch? (10:38) The bad news continued on Monday as it also appears that Brady House's season is done in Fredericksburg due to a back issue. He last played on June 11th and the organization has not officially commented on the matter. (18:45) On a night with some offensive production, Washington's pitching did not come through. Erick Fedde was chased in the third inning and Steve Cishek allowed a Grand Slam. (29:10) "Joey Four Bags" was a doubles machine on Tuesday as he had three on the evening. Meneses has been a real bright spot this month and is hitting .348 since being called up on August 2nd. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Cleveland Guardians 8, Detroit Tigers 4 Houston Astros 3, Chicago White Sox 2 Chicago Cubs 3, Washington Nationals 2 Guardians 8, Tigers 4 – Guardians score 6 runs in 8th, rally past Tigers 8-4 All-Star José Ramírez blooped a go-ahead, two-run double as the Cleveland Guardians scored six runs with two outs in the eighth inning, rallying for a 8-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Rookies Steven Kwan and Oscar Gonzalez had RBI doubles, and Amed Rosario and Owen Miller added run-scoring singles in the eighth for the AL Central-leading Guardians. Tigers reliever Andrew Chafin struck out the first three batters in the inning, but tossed a wild pitch that allowed Luke Maile to run to first base and extend the frame. Cleveland then rattled off five straight hits and had seven consecutive men reach base. Astros 3, White Sox 2 – Valdez, Alvarez lead Astros to 3-2 win over White Sox Framber Valdez threw seven solid innings, Yordan Alvarez drove in a run and scored one, and the Houston Astros beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2. Chicago’s five-game winning streak ended. Valdez (12-4) gave up two runs and seven hits, struck out six and walked three. The left-hander is 4-0 in six starts since losing to Oakland on July 9. Franmil Reyes smacked a leadoff double off Jake McGee in the seventh. Erich Uelman pitched 2/3 of an inning for his first major league win. Steven Brault threw two scoreless innings and Rowan Wick pitched the ninth for his eighth save. Today Houston (Garcia 9-8) at Chicago White Sox (Giolito 9-6), 2:10 p.m. Chicago Cubs (Sampson 0-3) at Baltimore (Watkins 4-2), 3:05 p.m. Tigers are off MLB – Mike Trout plans to return for Angels on Friday in Detroit Three-time AL MVP Mike Trout intends to return to the Los Angeles Angels’ lineup on Friday night in Detroit. Trout hasn’t played since July 12. He missed the Angels’ past 30 games with an injury to his upper back and ribcage. He faced live pitching Monday and worked out Wednesday. The workouts left him confident he will be able to play against the Tigers when the Angels open a lengthy road trip. Trout earned an All-Star selection this summer while batting .270 with 24 homers and 51 RBIs in 79 games. But he has missed significant playing time for the second straight season. MLB – Former Phillies manager Joe Girardi to join Cubs TV booth Former Phillies manager Joe Girardi has joined Marquee Sports Network as an game analyst for the Chicago Cubs, one of his former teams. Marquee says Girardi will join Jon Sciambi and former big league pitcher Jim Deshaies in the booth for this weekend’s series against Milwaukee. He also will work next month’s series at Miami. Marquee Sports Network is jointly owned by the Cubs and Sinclair Broadcast Group. The 57-year-old Girardi was the manager in Philadelphia before he was fired in June. He had a 132-141 record over three years with the Phillies. NFL – National Football League – Preseason Week 2 Tonight Chicago Bears at Seattle Seahawks, 8:00 p.m. NFL – Colts, Lions get physical on 1st day of joint practices Indianapolis coach Frank Reich enjoyed watching the first joint practice with the Detroit Lions. He liked the spirited play, the intensity, even the controlled chippiness. Lions quarterback Jared Goff just enjoyed working against a different defense — once he settled in. It was a solid start to a long, busy week of work. The two teams will hold another practice against one another Thursday and meet Saturday for their second preseason game. WNBA – WNBA Playoffs – Round 1 (Best of three) Last Night New York Liberty 98, Chicago Sky 91                                          (NYL leads 1-0) Liberty 98, Sky 91 – Liberty score final 13 points, beat Sky in playoff opener Sabrina Ionescu had 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists, Natasha Howard also scored 22 points and the seventh-seeded New York Liberty beat the defending champion Chicago Sky 98-91 in the opening game of the WNBA playoffs. New York scored the final 13 points of the fourth quarter as Chicago missed 10 of its last 11 shots. Ionescu made a 3-pointer and a jumper from the free-throw line during the run, and Marine Johannes highlighted the spurt with an over-the-shoulder pass to Howard. New York, which won its first playoff game since September 23, 2015, plays Game 2 of the best-of-three series at Chicago on Saturday. Betnijah Laney added 17 points and Stefanie Dolson scored 13 for New York, which set a franchise scoring record in the playoffs. NBA – LeBron James inks 2-year, $97.1 million deal with Lakers LeBron James has agreed to a two-year, $97.1 million contract extension through the 2024-25 season with the Los Angeles Lakers. The maximum deal includes a player option for the 2024-25 season that would keep the second-leading scorer in NBA history with the Lakers past his 40th birthday. James was headed into the final year of his most recent deal with the Lakers, who signed the four-time NBA Most Valuable Player and four-time league champion in July 2018. Barring injury, James is likely to surpass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA’s career scoring king this winter. NCAA – Big Ten – USC, UCLA exits could cost Pac-12 schools $13M in rights A new report says the departures of Southern California and UCLA from the Pac-12 Conference could mean an estimated loss of around $13 million per year in media rights for each of the remaining schools. The interim report was released during a Board of Regents meeting held at UCLA to address its move to the Big Ten Conference in 2024. California Gov. Gavin Newsom demanded an explanation from UCLA about the move when he attended last month’s Board of Regents meeting in San Francisco. UCLA and USC announced in June that the schools would be leaving the Pac-12 Conference in two years. USC is a private institution and not part of the UC system. Golf – LIV – Report: LIV draft contract has restrictions and major bonus The Wall Street Journal is reporting LIV Golf players need permission to grant exclusive interviews and agree to help recruit other players. The Journal says it reviewed a draft contract that Saudi-funded LIV Golf offered players. The newspaper says it wasn’t clear if terms in the draft are in all contracts or can be negotiated. None of the signing bonuses are mentioned. One provision says players would get a $1 million bonus if they were to win any of the four majors. Meanwhile, Greg Norman has sent a letter updating LIV Golf’s request for world ranking points. Golf – PGA – Players-only private meeting was all about a better PGA Tour Tiger Woods felt strongly enough about a private meeting of top PGA Tour players that he flew from Florida to Delaware to attend. What’s emerging from that players-only meeting is unity against a rival league funded by Saudi money and how to make the PGA Tour better. There was another form of unity. No one is willing to share details on the best way forward. Xander Schauffele says there was a code to keep tight lips. Rory McIlroy says the ideas are for tour executives to hear as they forge a path. As for Woods? McIlroy says he remains the biggest voice. NHL – Blackhawks agree to 1-year deal with D Jack Johnson The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to a one-year contract with Jack Johnson after the veteran defenseman helped Colorado win the Stanley Cup last season. Johnson’s contract carries a $950,000 hit to the salary cap. General manager Kyle Davidson says Johnson “provides the team with a strong veteran presence, good size and a competitive edge.” The 35-year-old Johnson broke into the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings in 2007. He has 72 goals and 240 assists in 1,024 games, also playing for Columbus, Pittsburgh and the New York Rangers. NASCAR – Kimi Raikkonen hits pause on retirement to race NASCAR Kimi Raikkonen will take a break from his retirement to return to racing this weekend in the NASCAR race at Watkins Glen International in upstate New York. The 2007 Formula One world champion will drive for TrackHouse Racing and its Project91, which is a program to give top international drivers exposure to NASCAR. Sunday’s race with the Raikkonen is the debut of Project91. The Finnish driver has tried NASCAR racing once before. In 2011, he ran the Xfinity and Truck Series races at Charlotte. Game 56: Ruiz's Dramatic Pickoff Throw Seals a 3rd Straight Win

The Nats held off the Reds 5-4 to win their 3rd straight game and to take the series. Mark & Al open with Keibert Ruiz's fantastic defensive play for the final out, that allowed the Nationals to hang on and for Steve Cishek to notch the Save. Hear the explanation of how advanced scouting led to the execution of that snap throw to 1st Base, (12:04) Luis Garcia had a RBI single and swung a hot bat in Cincinnati. However, there were more question marks about his play at shortstop, mainly in the bottom of the 9th. Should he have thrown the runner out for the final out? (23:06) Patrick Corbin earned the win as all three runs he allowed came in the 1st inning. Al points out many of the lefty's advanced stats as we are two months into the season. He has been victorious in two of his past three starts. (33:56) It was another banner day in Rochester as Cole Henry threw five scoreless innings in his AAA debut. What is the potential timetable for him to be called up to Washington later this season? (40:05) Thursday's starting pitcher in Miami is "TBD". Is that Latin for Stephen Strasburg? [Quick personal note: my kind and patient speaking agent wants me to remind you that Pride Month is coming. If you're looking for a speaker for your company, conference, college or some related Pride event, I'm available. Do inquire.]It actually hadn't been that long, but somehow, it felt like a past life. I hadn't been to a baseball game since October, when my dear friend Ana introduced me, for the first time, to Fenway, the great cathedral of hope that I'm told by many believers is the beating heart of Boston. That's a story for another day.As a reciprocating thanks to her, I had bought really great tickets to one of the Nationals' first weekend home games this season, the third in their series against those b*****d Mets, on a Friday evening, April 8th. Stephen Strasburg Bobblehead Day.No, excuse me, that's imprecise. Stephen Strasburg World Series MVP Bobblehead Day.Hey, I wouldn't hold out on y'all. Here's a pic.But Ana had to back out due to work because she's a busy lady, and so, I called up my friend Anthony, who had I hadn't seen in a while, to tag along. Now, sure, October was only six months ago and how spoiled was I to see a great playoff game then, but holy hell, folks, six months in this era might as well be six years, and the calibration of my heart gets unwieldy when I haven't been to the park in a while. I don't know how to explain it, but baseball—which I never played as a kid, not even little league—has a way of calming the worse impulses of my anxiety. The game forces my brain to slow down to a peaceful hum, punctuated occasionally, in the most welcome way, by the undeniable pleasure of a cracking bat's unbridled ambition.I f*****g love baseball. I love the sustained yet controlled buzz that permeates a ballpark. I love the beautiful and oft-ludicrous humanity that fill the seats. I love the food that's terrible for you. I love the shitty beer. I love being with a group of good friends and talking to each other about everything under the sun as we wait for something exciting to happen in the game. That last bit is most perplexing to folks who don't like baseball, and I totally get it. To them, it makes no sense why someone would pay to wait around for the not-so-frequent moments of adrenaline — indeed, such a moment may never come in a game, and you wound up merely waiting for the drive home.To them I say: you're right. If the totality of a baseball game came down to what happens on the field, every fan suddenly becomes a bit of a gambler. But it's so much more than that. To me, it's the conversations had at baseball games that make the experience worth it. While you're waiting for that exciting moment, you and your pals have cast out lines into the conversational pond, throwing out whatever the hell is on your mind, and often, with the right companions, the folks who know you and you know them, there's a hell of a bite and the conversation is damn good. It's not that these conversations couldn't happen outside baseball games; it's that it's so easy for them to happen at the ballpark. So organically. Something about the steady but comforting pull of the field keeps your brain's engine humming at a leisurely pace, just enough to be engaged with what's going on around you but not so much that you can't b***h about work or rave about some great flick that just came out or bemoan the state of the dating scene or, as much as I try to avoid it and inevitably fail, unpack current events. That Friday night was gorgeous. Low 60s. The Sun was setting around first pitch into a blanket of royal blue behind the left shoulder of the park. The clouds had dissipated and been swept away, falling into the horizon. The towering lights had knocked on, washing the park in a golden hue, except where the grass was so, so very green. As I said, I had splurged on really great seats—a rarity—and we found ourselves not far behind home plate. The kind of seats where there's free food and drinks and easy, close access to a restroom. The kind of seats with QR codes you can zap to have things delivered to you. The kind of seats I wouldn't dreamed of having as a kid growing up and watching games on a grainy box television in a dingy trailer. The world is currently awful in too many ways to itemize, but I had a beer in my right hand and a good friend seated to my left, and here I was, healthy and living authentically and sitting not far behind home plate on a crisp Friday night in a gorgeous ballpark, and my—oh my—how I wish I could tell 10 year-old Charlotte she'd be casually doing this someday.Anthony's around my age. We met through the Truman Project and hit it off immediately. He's good people. Funny, smart, honest, and terrible at skiing. He's also an Army vet, which, insufferably to our mutual friends, takes up much of the conversation every time we get together. Army vets are gonna talk s**t about the Army, guaranteed. We complain with the best of ‘em. There's a stickiness and yielding to a good casual conversation, the peaceful tension of a rubber band you absentmindedly stretch in your fingers. It's a bit more work to keep it pulled, and there's something of an art to knowing where the yielding must come, like little tides running against the brain and the heart. We talked about things I won't much mention here, but Anthony is one of those pals that makes it easy to discuss just about anything without requiring you to be “on” in the ways so common these days. Even the word “discuss” might be too formal here. Shooting the s**t. Yeah, that's better. That feels right. Shooting the s**t, with glances into the more serious subjects. It's been a tough few months on the trans rights front, and even that feels like an understatement. I tell Anthony that the attacks on trans kids hurt to watch, but far worse than that is the silence of those who supposedly are our allies. The silence is somehow the worst part. The silence, more than anything, has been excruciating. I've cried too much lately. It's hard not to. Anthony doesn't pretend to get it, and that's partly what makes him so refreshing. He understands certain angles of bigotry in his own context, but he doesn't claim to get what trans folks are going through. He just knows it sucks because that feeling of shouting into the void rings familiar for anyone on the margins. Josh Bell clocked a dinger to right center field in the bottom of the third, putting us up even with the Mets, and though we don't yet know it, that'll be the apex of our excitement over the on-field activity. Except it wasn't! Top of the fifth: poor Francisco Lindor took a stray ball to the chin from Steve Cishek, signed just a few weeks prior, and the benches cleared into a brawl. Did I mention these were really good seats? Hot damn and stretched rubber bands, if you've never had a front row seat to an MLB mosh pit, let me assure you that you're not likely to soon forget it. I wasn't hoping for a fight or anything, but when it happened, it was hard not to gape.I laughed when Anthony remarked, seemingly in awe: “I've never been at a game where the pitchers sprinted from the bullpen into a rumble.”Nor had I. That Nats went on to lose, and the rest of the game wasn't much to write about if you're not a Mets fan. But Anthony and I took full advantage of the good weather and the cold beer, and our brains went fishing back in the easy depths. Seamlessly. Despite how awful things have been in the world lately, I found a scrap of heaven in my backyard that night. The sky cooled off. The chatter got lazier. The laughs easier. The peace came so fast and so easily that we didn't take notice.I love baseball.[Hey, friends, quick note: this is my main source of income. It's how I pay the bills. The Nats had their most frustrating loss of the season as they coughed up a 3-0 lead and lost 5-3 in the series finale in Pittsburgh. Al & Mark (Live from PNC Park) recap Sunday afternoon's game as  Patrick Corbin made it through 5 innings, but the Pirates rallied against him and the bullpen in the 6th & 7th. Steve Cishek was tagged with the loss by allowing 3 runs, and it calls into question whether or not Sean Doolittle should have entered the game before the right hander did. (13:07) Maikel Franco committed three errors and came very close to having a fourth.  However, he also had a web-gem on the afternoon.  The hosts discuss the veteran infield that has shown many defensive flaws so far this April.(25:01) The Nats return home this week, but the weather forecast is not looking promising.  Might the team get a much needed day off?

The Nats lost 7-3 to the Mets in a very long and active Friday evening in Navy Yard.  There were multiple delays, a bench clearing fracas, and Max Scherzer returned to D.C.The brawl came after Steve Cishek hit Francisco Lindor in the top of the 5th, ending Cishek's franchise debut after just two pitches. Mark explains to Al why Cishek was ejected when it did not seem that the pitch was intentional. Was New York manager Buck Showalter to blame for the escalation on the field?(17:03) Max Scherzer made his first appearance at Nationals Park since last summer's trade.  He lasted six innings in his Mets debut.  What did the hosts notice from Max on the mound?(24:57) Joan Adon will take the mound on Saturday evening as he surprisingly made the rotation to start the season.  This will be his 2nd career MLB start, the other being in the season finale in 2021.
