The Knicks are your 2025 NBA champions...give me a break. The Let's Go to the Phones boys discuss the current discourse about if Philadelphia fans should be happy for the Knicks (no, they shouldn't) and if the Knicks play "Villanova basketball" (who cares). Honestly, Knicks fans only deserve pain and misfortune in their lives, so no, nobody outside of New York should be happy they won. Not that we're salty. The boys delve into the World Cup, the Phillies, and a possible rift between Jalen Hurts and the Eagles. The Let's Go to the Phones Boys are back and they're already running out of ideas to talk about. It's not even the summer and the boys are sick of the Phillies, worried the Knicks may win an NBA championship, and bemoaning John Tortorella's easy road to the Stanley Cup. Plus, they also make fun of Coggin for thinking Grover Cleveland and Grover Cleveland Alexander were the same person for the entirety of his adult life. IDIOT.They fill the other time with Scientology talk, co-host Chris's earlier career of writing for the King of Queens, and wonder why every 90s sitcom had an episode with a pool hustle. So, not all that much has happened since the last time the Let's Go to the Phones boys got together. Only the Phillies fire Rob Thompson, the 76ers completed a historic 3-1 comeback against the hated Celtics, lost their first game against the Knicks, the Flyers won their first playoff series in what feels like 50 years, have lost their first two games against the Hurricanes, and oh yeah, the Eagles had their draft. So yeah, not all that much to talk about this week. The boys tackle all that and still find time for some Chili's Triple Dipper and strip club talk. The Approach Angle Nate Schwartz (@_nateschwartz) and Kyle Bland (@blandalytics) discuss how to use a variety of batted ball metrics. They start by talking about how average exit velocity can be deceptive, and isn't the best way to evaluate how hard hitters hit the ball. Instead, they pivot to talking about HardHit% and get into power stats such as max exit velocity and 90th percentile exit velocity. Then, they move into batted ball metrics that go beyond just how hard the ball is hit, such as Air EV (line drives and flyballs) and barrel rate. Kyle also touches on why PullAir% is an important stat that influences power outside of exit velocity. They wrap up by bringing it all together in xwOBACON, a one stat that measures everything on batted balls. Articles discussed: Fixing HardHit%: Pitcher Percentile Risers and the Case for K+SC%, Alexander Chase; Exit Velocity: Modeling Average Maximum Athletic Effort, Jonathan Judge; Introducing a Dynamic Hard Hit Rate and "TrueHit", Connor Kurcon; Now Let's Tweak Hard-Hit Rate Using Spray Angle, Alex Chamberlain; They Don't Make Barrels Like They Used To, Ben Clemens Players mentioned: Dominic Canzone, Roman Anthony, Chase Meidroth, Angel Martines, Rhys Hoskins, Coby Mayo, Hunter Goodman, Cal Raleigh, Ozzie Albies, Elly de la Cruz, James Wood, Jordan Walker Join Our Discord & Support The Show: PL+ | PL Pro - Get 15% off Yearly with code PODCASTProud member of the Pitcher List Fantasy Baseball Podcast Network Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Zack Meisel joined Baskin and Phelps from Guardians' Spring Training in Arizona to share what he's seen from the team so far this preseason. He talked about Steven Kwan's move to center field, if he expects the outfielder to be with the team the entire season, and whether or not he believes Rhys Hoskins will find his way to the major league roster this season.
Paul Hoynes and Joe Noga start to envision what Travis Bazzana and Rhys Hoskins could look like in the Guardians' lineup someday. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Andy and Jeff share their thoughts on Rhys Hoskins' potential spot in the Guardians' lineup and how much his bat can help the team's offense.
Steve Adams joins Darragh McDonald to discuss Pablo Lopez's UCL injury and what it means for the Twins' roster, how the Orioles will deal with injuries to Jordan Westburg and Jackson Holliday, the Guardians signing Rhys Hoskins to a minor league deal and their surprising lack of offensive moves this offseason, Angels owner Arte Moreno's comments about how fans don't care about winning, Chris Sale's extension with the Braves, and the interesting details that led Tony Clark to resign as leader of the MLB Players Association.
Highlights: The Cavaliers' loss to a shorthanded OKC team is seen as a mid-season warning about the team's focus and potential matchup issues rather than a cause for major alarm. The Allen-Mobley frontcourt combination continues to raise questions about its effectiveness, particularly against quick, physical teams, suggesting their minutes may need to be staggered. A discussion on Evan Mobley's role suggests he should focus on defense rather than being a primary creator, with a potential trade being considered if the team falters in the playoffs. Host Terry Pluto has reversed his initial opposition to the James Harden trade after learning the severity of Darius Garland's lingering injury, now valuing Harden's durability. Recent acquisitions are expected to provide the Cavaliers with a needed injection of toughness and defensive intensity. Speculation about another LeBron James return to Cleveland is dismissed as premature and unlikely, especially given the James Harden trade and James's current career stage. The Browns plan a "targeted aggression" strategy in free agency, prioritizing veteran additions to their depleted offensive line. It is suggested the Browns should use at least two of their top 70 draft picks to rebuild the offensive line, with a specific focus on drafting a long-term center. Why new Browns Defensive Coordinator Mike Rutenberg's success will depend on his ability to earn the respect of and effectively manage veteran stars like Myles Garrett and Denzel Ward. The signing of slugger Reese Hoskins is seen as a "vintage Guardians" move, addressing a major need for right-handed power on a value deal. Steven Kwan's elite instincts may help him succeed in the more demanding position in center. It is argued that Major League Baseball, not the Guardians, should bear the financial responsibility for Emmanuel Clase's salary while his legal situation is managed by the league. Terry's statistical review of prospects suggests Chase DeLauter is more prepared for a major league opportunity than Travis Bazzana, emphasizing performance over draft position. José Ramírez's clubhouse leadership is highlighted through an anecdote where he publicly boosted a teammate's confidence, reinforcing his role as the team's heart. The podcast ends with a nostalgic discussion on classic sports board games, highlighting how they cultivated imagination and a connection to sports in a pre-digital era. Who do you feel more confident rostering for next season – Dominguez or Volpe?5.Kyle Tucker hits the IL at the worse time. Moises Ballesteros gets the call. Any interest?6.Rhys Hoskins is finally back but has only gotten one at-bat over his first two games. Is he going to play full-time or just be a guy off the bench with the recent play of Andrew Vaughn?7.Arizona Fall League Previewa.I wrote a large post on Thursday of all the ranked players attending. We will discuss some of the players and who you are looking forward to seeing how they do?8.Listener Questions:a.Mac - Hey Rich, I'd be interested in yalls thoughts on Elly De La Cruz second half of the season? While he has been known to be streaky player the lack of home runs and even his normal stealing pace (past week he has started to get some again) during the second half has been bit confusing. Thanks!b.Collins - Should the Dodgers let Ohtani just come in as a RP in the playoffs and be a shutdown backend bullpen arm? c.Collins - FYPD: Roki was the consensus top pick last year. Of course, I took him. The next two top picks a year ago were Condon and Bazzana. How's that working out? Not great so far. With so many more top picks performing in the top round last year, how did a lot of us miss this, just bad luck or what? (Thinking of Kurtz, Burns, Cam, Cags, etc)d.David - Is O'Neil Cruz a bust at this point?e.Hoppy - Who's your favourite (and least favourite) fantasy baseball player of all time?f.Hoppy - find my interest levels go through natural ups and downs during the season, but no matter what happens in season I always seem come back with renewed vigour preseason, when prospect lists are published and drafts start again. Do you have the same experience and have you ever had thoughts about (gasp!) giving up fantasy baseball?g.Nick - When working a Dynasty League where you can keep anyone you want for any amount of time, what is the cut off of your rankings that you are willing to throw them back into the draft to see what else you can get? Top 300? Top 15 at position? And does that differ slightly on age, like willing to keep someone who is a lot younger or not so much older?i.Context: I am in a 12 team Dynasty league with normal roster positions, with a 15 person minor league roster in CBS. I find myself sometimes keeping too many players so I really only change over 1 or 2 on the active roster, then struggle to figure out who to cut when a prospect gets called up and wonder if I should cut more people out the gate to take some risks, to be willing to cut them for prospects.h.Tim - What are you doing with these last couple of faab periods to prepare your team for next year? 9.What one or two hitters are you targeting for this weekend's FAAB?10.What one or two pitchers are you targeting for this weekend's FAAB?
