Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well

Living a values-based life is different from a goal-oriented one. A values-based life encompasses more than trying to “feel good” or get to a final destination. When you direct your life toward what really matters to you, you will feel an increased sense of meaning and vitality, whatever situation you find yourself in. Values-based living has greater depth and staying power than goals and resolutions. Join Debbie and Dr. Jenna LeJeune, author of Values in Therapy: A Clinician’s Guide to Helping Clients Explore Values, Increase Psychological Flexibility, and Live a More Meaningful Life, for an encouraging discussion about what “living well” really means and how to increase values-based living in yourself and in your clients. Listen and Learn: What do “values” really mean, and how are they different in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy? How to disentangle values from morals and goals Tips for how to explore what “living well” means to you Why pain deserves appreciation What to do when you feel like your values conflict with each other About Dr. Jenna LeJeune Dr. Jenna LeJeune is a clinical psychologist, author, and co-founder and president of Portland Psychotherapy, an evidenced-based psychotherapy clinic in Portland, Oregon. 05: Define Success On Your Own Terms

Success is Easy

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 4, 2019 17:45

As Debbie Allen was writing her latest book, Success Is Easy, she would interview people on how they defined success, and each person had a completely different answer than the person before. What struck her was how they defined success by their own terms. Join Debbie as she shares honest wisdom to help you succeed. Show Highlights: You don’t want someone to define your success. This is something that is very individual to each person. Looking for others’ approval: it doesn’t matter! Don’t wait for the approval of others, look for your own approval. 3 Steps to Defining Your Own Success: Discover why success is important to you. Uncover your drive to move past obstacles. Start by taking the first step. The #1 reason most people don’t succeed is that they don’t take the time to really define what they truly want. You must have awareness, and know what you want, then write it down! If you believe success is what everybody else says it is, you’ll always miss the target. Stop comparing yourself to others. By understanding and valuing who you are and why you desire success, it’s easier to tap into your true value by becoming more aware of your strengths, your skills, and your existing knowledge. Start listening to your inner promptings and see what you will start discovering. When you follow what success means to you, it will lead you in the right direction. Take full responsibility of your direction once you have defined it. If roadblocks get in the way, you will knock it down because you have goals to achieve. Define your core values around the success that you want. Your success is not defined by others. It’s only defined by yourself. Success is defined by knowing what you want most in life and most of all, believing that you can achieve it. Deborah Trent was a typical substance abuse counselor who wanted to make a difference in the lives of her clients. In 2001 Debbie stumbled upon the 3 Principles, a common-sense approach to how people experience life that stressed a foundation of innate mental health. It rang true to her and changed her approach to working with clients in every setting from that point forward. In today's show, listen in to Jeanne and Debbie's conversation about 15 years of working with the 3 principles in addiction counseling. Real people, inspiring stories and transformation! Ready to learn more? Join Debbie on the addiction track at The Awesome Event!Deborah Trent was always drawn to helping others find a happier and more peaceful life. She first attempted that by following traditional paths and acquiring a Bachelor of Science in Social Work Degree, followed by a Master’s Degree and an Education Specialist Degree, both in Counseling. She loved working as a therapist, but felt there was a missing piece that she needed to find to share with people that would give deeper, longer lasting relief from their issues, and permanent peace of mind.Deborah has worked in community, nonprofit and private practice settings. Most recently she played a role in the opening a 3-Principle based inpatient substance abuse treatment center in Gulf Breeze, Florida, first as their lead trainer and later as the clinical director. Recently Deborah moved to Dunedin, Florida where she is helping to open an out-patient treatment center in the Tampa Bay Area, based of course, on the knowledge that all people have innate mental health and can find a substance free way to happiness and peace of mind.
